I have a hard time with being consistent, I can have a perfect form and good breathing at first, then my mind overthinks it and I end up stressing out and begin to panic, and eventually gas out because of a mistake -_-

I've experienced the same, however the best thing I did was to swim slowly, for one it conserves energy and actually gives you time to think about what you're doing. I found I swim OK swimming slowly as my stroke seems more efficient. As long as you continue to keep your legs together close to the surface while kicking, your body will be streamlined and that makes for easier and more comfortable, natural breathing. Also when you exhale and you have turned your face to take your breath, ensure that all the water left in your mouth or nose is blown out fully before you inhale again, that way you have good air to exhale when your face returns to the water. I hope this helps and very best of luck.

Thank you for posting this. I have lost 200+ Lbs in a year by doing 100 minutes of water aerobics 6 days a week and know I have been taught free style swimming and I am amping up my workouts and shedding the last 100 lbs off before excess skin removal. People ask all the time if you can loose weight swimming.... DUH, ah yeah!!! Thank You again for helping me to hone my skills.

Why am I swallowing half the pool when I try to do this?
@laminekeita7649
@laminekeita7649 6 жыл бұрын
I had the exact same problem. I had no idea why I was always swallowing water. I know this will sound vague to you (as it did to me when I had that problem), but I believe that you just need to practice. Few months ago, when my coach was telling me how to breathe, I would still fuck the whole breathing up. However, after a lot of practice and visualization, I can properly do it (and dang it feels good). In conclusion: practice + visualization is what enabled me to properly breathe in freestyle. I don't believe I'm being very helpful here, but I just wanted to provide an insight and encourage you not to give up! Have a good day

I am just sharing my experience and I am not sure if I am entirely correct here. But in most of these lesson videos they don't emphasis on the importance of your leading arm. Your leading arm should be stretched all the way with your legs stretched and your toe pointing backwards. Imagine if you are trying to grab something with your leading arm, it should not drop in the water and not be folded but stretched. This will actually give your body the balance it requires when rotating your head to side breathe. The reason why we tend to swallow water while side breathing is because we either drop our leading arm or don't keep our body legs stretched.

Just started swimming again for the first time in 20+ years. I never swam laps as a kid, but now I'd like to try and get some low-impact cross-training. Breathing is a big problem for me, on top of apparently being out of shape for swimming. I think I'm blowing out too much through my nose and forcing the next inhale before I'm really ready. Feel like I'm always gasping. I'll work on your drills here.. thanks for the tips:)

relaxing is the most important thing to breath, am just like you, i followed all those steps and it didnt work, but when i followed them again with relaxing my body every time i inhale, it goes fine, just dont do any move or any stroke while inhaling, relax, rotate, inhale. :)

I only recently learnt swimming and while I can easily exhale through the nose when I first start, when I take my head out to get more air, when I bring it into the pool again, I find it extremely difficult to exhale through the nose and wind up holding my breath until I bring my head back up and eventually have to stop because I end up getting water either up my nose or swallow a little bit of it. Any way to correct that?

I disagree with only moving the head to breath. You need to treat your body as one unit and initiate the roll from the hips to take a breath. So the hips lead the roll to position the head and mouth to take a breath and the head leads the roll onto the front. Float, keep the hips up by relaxing the neck and letting the head float.You only need to use the muscles you require as much as you need to perform the stroke. It's all about taking concious control of what you do unconsciously.

Making a pirate mouth like arghhh is just silly! You can open your mouth normally and still avoid water in your mouth if your head is properly aligned with your body. This is possible because as your head cuts through the water, a bowel wave is created leaving a small gap in front of your mouth. Also notice when you are just standing still with your head sideways with 1 goggle in the water, you can still breath through your mouth with water partially inside your mouth.

If your legs are sinking you might be 'lifting' your head up. You should only 'turn' your head. You should also slightly turn your body. It's going to be difficult at first, thats just how it is, but keep practicing and you will learn it! Good luck!

David Høyer when do we actually have to breath out? is it before we want to take a breath during a head turn or immediately after the face facing down again?
@davidlachlanhoyer1
@davidlachlanhoyer1 9 жыл бұрын
You exhale under the water as soon as your head is in the water. If you start exhaling while your head is over the water you will have less time to inhale. Don't hold your breath when you are swimming freestyle, always exhale when your face is under the water. If you are breathing every 2 strokes, you should exhale fast, and if you are breathing every 6 you exhale slower. When you lift your head out of the water, you should have exhaled pretty much all your air - the little air you might have left, should be gone fast before you take a breath, but really you don't want to waste time exhaling when your head is over the water, because this is when you inhale. Hope that answers your question:)
