Thanks for the update; this is essentially what I've been doing as well. Someone recently turned my attention to the wide-mouth half pint jars and I wish I would have invested in three dozen or so of those. The way it is now, I have to decant some tobacco in to a separate container to fill my pipe over - otherwise the excess spills out of my pipe and completely misses the jar. The wide-mouthed jars help mitigate this 'problem'. I also used to decant 8oz containers of packages in to large mason jars but now find it's best to break them out in to 2 or 3 smaller jars. This way, while you're pinching from one of them, the others are still aging nicely.

Good vid, I personally jar my Tobacco as soon as I crack tins, then dry bowls as needed, or have some in baggies if I its one of my popular blends. Only reason is I can be forgetful and fear I will open a tin and forget about it. But there is something nostalgic about working out the tins.

Much the same as my method. Most blends end up in a canning jar. Moist blends like Samuel Gawith flakes usually get finished before it is necessary.
@stuffandthingsyoutube8 жыл бұрын
+Razorback Piper Guy - Yep. Those Gawith blends rarely see the inside of a jar.

I use canning jars like that for long term storage, helps that they're cheap. Also is nice that a tin fits nicely in there. For the blends i regularly smoke, I get little jars from Walmart that seems to work pretty well. They look a bit nicer too. The weather has not been kind unfortunately so I haven't smoked in awhile. But I'm hoping to try Margate and another J.F. i got (18 something).

Hi Bradley, I really enjoy your videos. Thanks for taking the time to create and post them. A few of the canning jars I use are basically the same as the 250ml ones featured in many of your videos. I find they are perfect for flakes. Recently, however, I picked up a dozen of the Bernardin 250ml wide-mouth jars and I much prefer them over the standard 250ml jars for most other cuts. The wide mouth allows one to get their hand in there to grab a pinch easier, and the lower/wider profile makes them easier to stack. I am not sure if you have a local vendor that supplies Bernardin jars but perhaps you can find a similar jar style from a different manufacturer. One last thing; is Savinelli Brunello Flake on your list of tobaccos to review? It's pretty nice stuff - possibly on the sweet side for your tastes but nothing like a heavily-cased and topped aro.
@stuffandthingsyoutube8 жыл бұрын
+TheCogitech - I've seen the wide-mouth jars around. I may pick some up when and if I run out of the jars I'm using now. I definitely intend to review some of the Savinelli mixtures in the future. Thanks for watching!

What about ash management, like dumping the ash out of the bowl while smoking? That's a really tricky one for me. The consensus seems to be once at about half way down the bowl. A build up of ash can impair the flavour, but it can also aid the way the tobacco burns. Dump too much out and I'll struggle to get a good burn going, and some tobaccos I can smoke without dumping any out right down to the bottom.
@stuffandthingsyoutube8 жыл бұрын
+DarkAngelOfHellingly - I find that I tip my ash very rarely. It depends on the blend though. I might do it more if I'm smoking a flake and not at all with a fine ribbon.

Also for tounge bite, I find sometimes that soda reacts with the tobacco, so I tend to drink water when smoking.

If you pack your mason (or other type) jar fully, the tobacco will keep its moisture content. Its airtight. But if there is little tobacco in the jar, and the rest is AIR (like in the video), it will dry up, just like when is not in the jar. I used to use masons and it looks like as the tobacco level goes down, it will dry up much faster then when it was fully packed (I speak about months). Ps: great vids!
@stuffandthingsyoutube8 жыл бұрын
+Sótanyi Gellért - Yes, the less air the better for long term storage.

Dear Bradley, Could you make a video about flakes? I've been smoking casually for a few months now, and I'm still unsure how to tackle those. I'm currently smoking Orliks' Golden Sliced and Dark Strong Kentucky flakes. I love them both, but I seem to have trouble with the charring light and keeping them lit. I have to relight them constantly... Regards, - Mike.

I the hinged jar will still work if you put the tobacco in a ziplock AND find a thicker better sealing gasket. Of course is is easier and cheaper just to buy the canning jars, so I switched over to that long long ago.

Do you ever get condensation? I do every once in a while. I assume it's either from jarring on a humid day or maybe jarring while the tobacco is too wet?
@stuffandthingsyoutube8 жыл бұрын
+lunchie83 - Not that I've noticed. It shouldn't cause any harm though, unless it's just soaking wet in the jar.

My way is I use kitchen nylon over the mason jar top to seal and after I seal it with the rubber mason jar cap to be more airtight, can the nylon affect the flavour of the tobacco? I can't find the other jars anywhere

I don't know if this type of question warrants a video (maybe it might, who knows) but for storing particular cuts of tobacco like say a flake type (in my rotation for example that's Dunhill's Virginia and G.L. Pease Quiet Nights), is it better to leave it in flake form, or rub it out first?
@stuffandthingsyoutube8 жыл бұрын
The flake retains moisture better, but if you're storing in an airtight container, it doesn't make much difference. I prefer to store the flakes without rubbing out just to give the different flavors more time to commingle.
@studioA.G.T.8 жыл бұрын
Ah I see, some comments from around the web say to rub out to let the flakes "breathe", some say to not do so, but if it doesn't bestow much additional benefit rubbed out, I'll leave it as is (I just keep'em in Ball jars). Thanks for the reply!

+B. John Black - Perhaps I'll show it in a future video.
@BillTCat-id1yv8 жыл бұрын
Just my two cents worth. try drying out your tobacco properly. if that wont work, try a similar tobacco. me? no matter what i do, full virginia flake bites me. However, other full virginia flakes dont bite at all.
@dsgpipesmoker59448 жыл бұрын
I am the same way with Virginias; can't smoke em unless there's something else in the blend like Latakia, burley, or perique.

+dsgpipesmoker Try using a pipe with different shape. I had tons of tongue bite when smoking GL Pease Laurel Heights in medium-sized billiards. Even though it was dry enough. Got myself very high billiard and tongue bite almost disappeared.

+rockets4kids - I believe you're right. 8 fluid ounces, but you won't be able to get even 4 ounces of tobacco in them, and that's packing it in as tightly as possible. They're the perfect size for a 1.76 oz/50g tin.

Hey, really nice info!! I have a question, i have an open package of tobacco pipe since 2016 stored in a shoe box. Recently, i´ve tried to smoke it, but it seems it can´t stay "lighted" for so long. Of course it´s dry, but, it´s still "smokeable"? Thank you!
@stuffandthingsyoutube Жыл бұрын
I'd say probably not. Is is possible to rehydrated tobacco if it hasn't completely turned to dust though by putting it in a jar with a humidifier pouch or button.
