I did this once and it totally works. I didn’t realize that I was doing intermittent fasting. I just decided one day to skip dinner every night and lower my carb, sugar and starch intake. The pounds melted off. It was a little hard at first because in the evenings I did get hungry, but after about a week or two my body got used to it. Really the only carbs I did have was steel oats with banana, which also helped lower my bad cholesterol. Need to do it again.

The longer a person has been overweight, the more overweight, or if they have a diagnosis of diabetes or prediabetes, the longer it may take for a 16/8 schedule to kick in. To speed it up a tad, one can try extending the fasting hours to 18, 20, or 24 (24 means one meal a day). But to avoid overeating in the non-fasting hours. At first, people notice less bloating, then the weight loss. You are definitely not the only one with "processed carbs" cravings -- one option is to initially eat what we normally would, but cut it down by 50%, then gradually continue to cut back on the processed carbs.

This video was so informative and very broken down, well done! I’m 15 and 5’9 and I’m around 147lbs. I want to lose about 10- 15 pounds to be as fit and healthy as I can be (I’m a u17 club soccer player, so I’m a little nervous that it could affect my athletic performance), but a lot of my weight is muscle mass. Is this a safe way to melt off body fat pounds without affecting my muscle mass, and must one continue regular intermittent fasting after reaching their goal (instead of creating a low carb, unprocessed, healthy meal plan)?
@MajdMD4 жыл бұрын
It should not significantly affect your muscle mass unless you no longer have any fat to burn. And stopping it may cause weight gain -- i tell my patients to think of it as a lifestyle change. Now in someone like yourself without much weight to lose who is an athlete, you can simply convert to healthy/lower carb lifestyle once you've achieved your weight loss goal. But of course, since i don't know you personally or your health history, it would be prudent to always run everything by your doctor first.

A little story: Sunknowingly I dropped a whopping 10kg in 6 months.....this has never happened before ever in my whole time of losing weight to decrease my PCOS symptoms that affect me sooo much udekk. I tried everything and nothing worked till now. I didn't sacrifice time/happiness/money/good food/focus etc. nothing went bad for me; in fact, I was happier than I had been in a while, way more relaxed and calm. The only things I changed were doing exercise and generally eating better bc I was forced to cook basically. Would you believe me if I said I suffer from bloating literally everyday, but I didn't bloat once after about 2 weeks of this during lockdown? That was when I realised I was losing weight because of this routine and also that I even had a bloating problem at all. Amazing honestly! Now, thanks to these 2 months of going back to old habits (exam stress does things...), no exercise, and gaining 6kg back......I know what makes me bloated/ uncomfortable/ lethargic and it's things I didn't even realise before like rice (I'm asian), chocolate, any fast food, and cornflakes.

Guys this works, I used to be really obesed. My eating habits were bad and I really ate a lot. But I decided to fast. Since I fast during school days and not summer. So I would eat afternoon after I go home, so basically I ate once a day. I would eat at afternoon like 3 pm until the next day afternoon. *this actually works* My family and relatives were giving me compliments about how I was getting skinny. and now I could say I have gotten skinny. I was really skinny last 2019 summer. But my habit began again this school year and until now but I’m going back to fasting but it’s hard. But if I usually end up eating a meal twice, I usually do a 7 min workout. *this worked for me. I would usually skip breakfast and eat only at the afternoon like maybe 12 or 3 and would eat the rest of the night. This was my daily thing, where I only eat meal ones either breakfast or lunch. If I ended up eating breakfast, that would be the last meal of the day. I was getting so skinny that my mom thought I had an illness such as diabetes (I hope not) but we went to the doctor and they basically said I don’t*

srtacamara Most people don’t find an issue with exercise - i actually addressed this in my newest video. As for how long to keep it up, initially it’s wise to be more stringent but once you get to your goal weight, most people can back off and just do 16/8 several times a week.

Intermittent fasting is a lifestyle/eating habit. It's not a diet. You can do it for the rest of your life. You don't have to do it every day. If you decide you want to go out to dinner on a Friday night, and it is outside of your 8 hr frame, go ahead and do it, but don't overdo it, and just continue with the fasting the next following days.

Hello. I take metformin and I’m advised to take it with food due to the undesirable side effects... I am wanting to try the 24 hr fasting tho. That would mean I would only have 1 meal. And I take my medication 2 times daily. Any tips for that situation? (I want to do 24 hr fasting 2 days a week)
@MajdMD5 жыл бұрын
Paulina Velasco Metformin can cause diarrhea and stomach upset in some people, but not all - have you ever experienced that? That’s the reason it’s recommended with food. Otherwise, talk to your doctor about possibly switching you to an extended release version that is milder on the stomach. Last option, can be taken once daily on those fasting days only OR take with some plain leafy greens. I’d talk to your doc to determine which option is best for you first though.

Yes, exercise is fine to do during fasting hours. By "BCAA" do you mean branch-chain amino acids? If so, it's best to take during eating hours -- even protein and fat stimulate insulin release.

For all of you who think this isn't a great idea, I was 220 lbs. I tried everything, and intermittent fasting helped me get down to my goal weight. I never starved, I ate what I wanted, but also exercised and ate nutritional foods. I didn't do the "1,200 calorie diet" but instead chose more nutritional foods.
@MajdMD5 жыл бұрын
Eric Smith Love this. Thank you. The 16/8 schedule is really not extreme for most people who are simply tired of extreme diet regimens. It’s something that is pretty do-able long term for many. Seeing patients like you in my office who finally are able to lose weight with something reasonable long term truly makes this all so rewarding as a doctor. Thank you for sharing your experience.

@@MajdMD people think losing weight should be dieting, weight lifting & beyond. I gave birth one year ago, and there's no evidence on my body that I did, because common sense tells you when you're body has had enough, I eat, I also drink plenty of fluid, chase a toddler around daily and am happy with myself. I get people may find it hard, but 3 square meals & multiple snacks a day really is only necessary for someone trying to put weight on. I still splurge and eat things I shouldn't, but never before bed, and I also skip breakfast because I noticed my body reacts better to weight loss & maintenance when I skip breakfast. I have a brunch and a earlier dinner, also it's a lot easier than counting your calories and calculating your energy output to offset the calories. I used to eat meals that were 200 cals to get where I was, but it was hard, and I used to snack because I found the 1200 calorie a day diet too restricting. People are often heavily misinformed when it comes to weight loss, and often never reaching their goals because it's hard to have full time jobs, with meal prepping, gym and calorie counting. I get so many peoppe saying "you're starving yourself, doesn't that mean you're annorexic?" Again, it's NOT starving, I eat happily, and more than enough.

Eric Smith Thank you for sharing this! Yes, IF is far from starving! And it is intentional, whereas starvation is not. Numerous cultures and religions have been fasting for centuries for various reasons. Thank you for your perspective on this!

Side effects of fasting include dizziness, headaches, low blood sugar, muscle aches, weakness, and fatigue. Prolonged fasting can lead to anemia, a weakened immune system, liver and kidney problems, and irregular heartbeat. Fasting can also result in vitamin and mineral deficiencies, muscle breakdown, and diarrhea
@MajdMD4 жыл бұрын
@@EricSmith-gn3rd I respectfully disagree! If done properly and well balanced meals are maintained, there should not be any nutritional deficiencies. If dizziness, headaches, weakness, fatigue -- these are signs of dehydration; simply drink more fluids and add some salt to your bone broth or mineral water. There's NO evidence fasting can lead to anemia, a weakened immune system, or liver/kidney/cardiac problems -- on the contrary fasting has gained more and more evidence of improved longevity, decreased insulin resistance, improved blood glucose levels, decreased cardiac risk, etc. www.cnn.com/2019/12/25/health/intermittent-fasting-live-longer-wellness-trnd/index.html

The problem occurred when women went into the workforce. It doubled the amount of workers, and then you needed two people to work, and you didn’t have anyone to stay home to make the food. Right now I’m a stay at home dad and I plan on making all the food, but money is right and I’ll have to get some jobs that work at morning or night to get it done. Health is more important than money imho.

I was put on a medication 15 years ago that made me gain 80 pounds. I was up to 200 lbs a week ago, but have just started a water fast. I have been so upset about my weight for so long, and am so excited to try this. I have no idea how this will affect my body or the medication, but I am on day two and already am down to 193.3. I'm not hungry and Im actually not cold for the first time in fifteen years. My body is actually making heat.... I am so freaking happy. My goal is to do a 35 day fast because I have a 17 day cruise coming up to Europe and it will be easy on the ship to stick to my fish, veggies and egg whites to wean myself off the fast. Im not hungry, and weirdly I am aware of my body more. Like I can feel my body, and before it seemed that I didn't feel my fat. Sounds weird, but it's a small change.

Sugar substitutes don't affect your blood sugar level. In fact, most artificial sweeteners are considered "free foods" - foods containing less than 20 calories and 5 grams or less of carbohydrates - because they don't count as calories or carbohydrates on a diabetes exchange. - this is from the mayo clinic

Then once they’ve mastered that to gradually implement those “do’s and don’ts” of the food they’re consuming that I’ve listed in my PDF guide and reviewed some of in this video. With that said, an occasional cheat with fast food or other desirable food is fine. But it shouldn’t be daily. And if you’re attending a birthday celebration or party, by all means, don’t deprive yourself of the fun. But get back to the schedule the next day. Great Q, thank you for posting!

I’ve learnt things I didn’t really want to learn from you 😁 I’m 63, type 2 diabetic on insulin, overweight, been keto for 15 months. Initiallylost 15 kg, then nothing, too many treats on holiday didn’t help! I’ve been doing intermittent fasting from 6pm to 11am but I have been having a cup of black tea with a sweetner first thing in the morning!!! That I assume has been breaking my fast???
@dawnmariebooher32694 жыл бұрын
Try taking your tea without the sweetener for a week and see if that makes a difference. If you don't care for it hot without sweetener you could try it iced. Also, you could try 1-2 drops of pure Stevia. That wouldn't affect the fast. Stevia is super sweet and an acquired taste so start off with only 1 drop. I personally don't like it hot but don't mind it cold.
@MajdMD4 жыл бұрын
We don't know what Stevia does to insulin (although it's probably the lesser of the evils), in fact we don't know what any of the non-nutritive sweeteners do. How long have you been fasting? Note that it can take a few weeks for the pounds to initially shed. You will initially experience water loss and diminished bloating, then the pounds start to shed. For those who have been overweight longer and those who have more weight to lose or are more insulin resistant, it may take a weeks to start kicking in.
