Try making the strum in the air - just playing imaginary strong… This will put you in touch with what it’s like to have a very light touch. Next, try it on the strings but brush them very lightly. The slower you go, the quicker you’ll get there. It’s counterintuitive but in my experience, very true 😉 I like to think of slow motion practice as “glacial tempo”... moving slowly as a glacier! When you can make the motions with a soft hand try to pick up the pace - after some time you’ll be amazed at how you can keep the hand soft and still execute the same motion! 👍

Good afternoon teacher! I have a question about the triplets. What I do is this. I strum down with index, follow down with my thumb but don't hit the strings and than i come up with my thumb and index both strumming the strings resulting in what also sounds like a triplet. Is this a less beneficail way to play them? Or is it more pattern based/song depending?
@UkuleleZen7 жыл бұрын
Hey there...thanks for watching - great channel name! Are you saying that you are leaving one of the triplets out? 1 (blank) 3 ? This would be another really cool rhythm to try out. If you meant to say that your thumb is missing the strings, try adjusting your hand placement so it will strike the strings when the thumb moves downward. Having a thumbnail helps. Whatever you do DON'T force anything. No emergencies here of course, but you want it to feel easy, yes? SO, practice making the motion while you make it in a soft & gentle way...this is "learning" easy :) this concept & other practices will be a part of my upcoming book "UKULELE ZEN" (the beginners method) - watch for it here! Finally, please note that there are other ways to play a triplet. What I'm showing here is a really good one however because it fits in so closely to good ol' down & up strumming. You dig? Ah, I knew you would. Over & out OmniStarchild...wishing you happy playing & be well, Stu

I've been strumming down with the index all the time and it is hard with the index. I keep hitting the strings in painful ways or they get caught up in my nails... Do you strum down with the index with the back of the finger as if you are sending something away or with the side?
@rog2717 жыл бұрын
hi stu, are you using the side of your thumb on the downstroke? rog.
@UkuleleZen7 жыл бұрын
Hey Roger - I tend to use the soft flesh side of my thumb. It gives mellow tone. For a brighter sound I'll use my thumbnail - which I keep a little longer. Sometimes...the back of the thumbnail for an upstroke! Try out the difference in tone slowly at first...it's a cool effect to be able to control the tone. Thanks for watching & hope you'll subscribe to Ukulele Zen :) Be well, Stu

@@UkuleleZen I'm going to keep practicing it, but I'm not convinced I can reliably cover the third string with my index finger. I see how it is faster than the traditional fingering of the D chord and you don't get that slight pull-off sound as your middle fingers switch places. I'm just getting a lot of 02X2 instead of 0222.
