The part where they find Thanos and kill him is actually a great scene despite its slightly disappointing way of avenging the people who got snapped away by Thanos- but that's just it. It's unsatisfying. Even with the death of the main villain, the heroes still lost because the damage the villain caused still remains. It's a moment you'd think there'd be a huge fight, but no, the huge fight already happened, and untimely the villain won
@crimz_3 жыл бұрын
And the line Thor says “I went for the head..” That’s when his depression started. It was heartbreaking, knowing Thor lost everything, only to kill Thanos, but also knowing it won’t bring the Dusted back.

@@crimz_ I was frustrated when people laughed at that or thought it was an ill timed joke. I am frustrated when people say Thor was thrown away as a fat joke and not epic. So many people completely MISSED THE POINT. God, I love Thor in Endgame so much. It's such a heartbreaking and ACCURATE portrayal of his grief, depression, guilt, and the weight of the personal responsibility he felt he had to stop Thanos. You see him eating and drinking before they leave earth, an early indication of his grief consumption, you have the line of, "I went for the head" as a haunting mantra that he can't let go, you have him dropping his "funny fat guy routine" the moment he hears Bruce say Thanos' name, because he's not fat and funny, he is broken and traumatized. To slowly see that damaged man speak to his mother, realize that it's ok to hurt and to fail, and to realize that for all his shortcomings, "[He's] still worthy." SO GOOD. And then at the end he suits up with Mjolnir AND Stormbreaker looking like a freaking Viking? I'm sorry, TELL ME HOW THAT'S NOT EPIC?! Also, can we appreciate that he didn't just get fit again at the end? He has started to heal emotionally, but his physical state shows there are still wounds, but that he has begun his path to restoration. OK, I'll stop. I just love it so much.

I'm kinda disappointed that you showed the scene where Thanos beats the guardians, but not the part that actually surprised me about it. I was born in 2002. The originals will always be the best in my opinion, Return of The Jedi has always been my favourite since I was a small child. Prequels were needed to build up that story and honestly I don’t get why so many people hate them. Revenge of The Sixth has the best fight scene out of all of the Star Wars movies and it brilliantly portrays the divide between light and dark. But these new Star Wars movies are complete trash. I came out of Last Jedi and thought “well I’m never watching that again” - I don’t care what anyone says. I’m a big Star Wars fan but you would be lying if you said it was a perfect film. Rogue One is my favourite out of the new Star Wars movies as it fits perfectly between 3 and 4. Solo wasn’t bad. That’s my rant over, bye.

Didn't even mention how Thor was set up on his hero's journey that would end with him defeating the villain. While Thanos was seemingly on his villain's mission, but it was ultimately HIS hero's journey. He was the main character. It was his story. And that's why him winning in the end was subversive. I went in thinking "okay, it's a two parter, Thanos will get like 3-4 stones and we'll see the Avengers take a final stand in part 2 to keep him from getting them all" My fucking face when he had 4 like halfway through the movie. He really did it. Civil war is the reason why, because the avengers were torn apart, but I liked what you said about how they were unwilling to make the sacrifices as well. But I think that makes it more subversive because the ending of Civil War made it seem like "yea we fought but we'll be pals soon" And then it really took until an hour or so into Endgame for them to be on a friendly level with each other again (Cap and Tony that is). @NADS IQ Again, no. *Hollywood* - The Last Jedi won 0 major awards.... (though it did win AARP's Best Film in the "Movies for Grownups" Category) *Wall Street* - Wall Street cares more about profits than sales. They also care about trends which indicate where the *brand* will go in the future. The brand is more than just movies and a lot more money is typically gained in those channels. (e.g. merchandise) Movie Sales ----------------- In this case - The Force Awakens had a $2B in worldwide box office Revenue w/ a movie cost of ~$260M (excludes marketing, etc., etc.) Gross Profit = $1.74B / ~760% return. The Last Jedi - $1.3B / ~$262M = $1.038B / ~400% return While it still made money, there is a significant drop between the performance of the prior movie and this one. This is *NOT* something Wall Street would like. Even worse is when you look at the numbers (so far) for Rise of Skywalker: $724M worldwide & production cost of $275M ... While it is still in theaters and could possibly catch up with TLJ, this is *not* something that Wall Street would like.... One very interesting data point, is the domestic (US) box office. TFA - $936M TLJ - $620M TFA* -$361M In fairness, the Original Trilogy also showed decline between the three movies, even though all are thought of as "good" movies; however, Wall Street wouldn't have approved of their performance either. (though the weakest original movie had a 14X profit) Other (Merch) ----------------------- While harder to quantify with exact numbers, the Disney Annual Report does have "nuggets" speaking to SW Merch: TFA - Strong sales Rogue One - Less sales than TFA TLJ - Significantly less than Rogue One Again, not something Wall Street would be jumping up and down about.

This is the first time I feel like I’ve watched an intelligent critic explain why they disliked the movie. Subscribed.

Nicholas Rodinos Actually, that’s not what a Mary Sue is, only a symptom of it. A Mary Sue has no real flaws and is pretty much a like playing an RPG on easy with a cheat code maxing out all the stats. And unfortunately that describes Rey pretty well. She doesn’t have to train or learn anything to gain new skills. She just knows (or downloads, if you want to go with the most popular explanation for her knowing everything) everything already, contradicting everything that came before her. Despite being the protagonist she is a completely flat character. In short, she is kinda boring. Combine that with making a mockery of the only non-villain to have any character growth from the previous film and maybe you’ll start to understand why The Last Jedi just isn’t a very good movie.

The hyper space ramming thing doesn't make sense in the star wars universe. Because hyperspace isn't just going really fast. It basically a worm hole to go to another side of the universe. And if it was so effective in killing things why didn't people fight like this before? It just makes no sense.
@mychajlomiller36884 жыл бұрын
While yes, there's a lot of lore about having to avoid objects when going into hyperspace, like stars or you'd get burned up, and interdictor ships can use gravitational fields to pull ships out of hyperspace due to safety mechanisms built into them. Would it have worked? Arguable at best. But it's at least plausible, that plus ships ships shields are only shown to work on objects traveling slower than lightspeed in tfa.

If Marvel wrote The Last Jedi.....Snokes identity is revealed to be an outcast of the old Jedi order who’s been watching the story unfold from afar. After the fall of the empire the people were left lawless without leadership. As one of the last two force users, Snoke felt obligated to come out of exile and restore order. His justified fear was Luke restoring the Jedi order of old and history repeating itself…Snoke feels great power in young Kylo and thru the force he shows the flaws of the Jedi, how they were easily corrupted by the senate , overtaken by the empire, exiled for love. Young Kylo, feels neglected by Luke and appreciated by Snoke and joins him. Luke has been on the island training in the ways of the force with the aid of old ghost jedi masters Yoda and Obi Wan. His force abilities are well beyond the powers expected of the jedi..But yet he feels he is outmatched by Snoke… He warmly embraces the lightsaber Rey gives him and tells her He’s Been waiting for her... He takes Rey as his apprentice for the final battle to come… Rey is fascinated by Luke, his incredible power but more from his wisdom. Kylo and Rey connect using the force and spend time together by their own powers in secret. They feel their strongest when they are together and share a mysterious magnet like connection. The two inevitably fall in love and the outcome of the pairing is a phenomenon the universe has never felt before. The combination of Dark and Light, Sith and Jedi, Hate and Love sends shockwaves through the galaxy. Snoke and Luke both feel chills from this great disturbance in the force….. To be Continued…

I think Endgame was fantastic as a story -- I mean what a way to end what was essentially the first 'phase' of the MCU, and the callbacks to previous movies were fantastic -- but as a movie, Infinity War was better. Endgame basically ignored a lot of character development (mostly Steve's) and there were some rather problematic aspects, like the pandering Girl Power scene or Thor's depression being used as a joke. Plus, plot holes. They seriously had no clue how their time travel worked. Endgame could have been a lot better than it was in terms of the way it dealt with its characters, but it was still really good. Both of them had incredible fight scenes though, I literally got chills. So yea, this was basically a long-winded way of saying I pretty much agree with you. Sorry for the long paragraph, Marvel is probably my favourite franchise and I have a lot of feelings about it :P

It's sad that we consider a humanized main villain to be subversive in this day and age. It should be the norm. No one in the universe thinks they are evil. Everyone who does evil things thinks they are doing the right thing at the time. Weather they are wrong or not is where the conflict should lie.
@Hoganply6 жыл бұрын
The level of humanisation of an antagonist depends on what kind of story you're telling.

I disagree. An antagonist you can relate to makes the antagonist grounded and realistic, and will always result in a better story.
@eadlynjune6 жыл бұрын
Well I’d argue that’s not always true. Some killers know what they did was wrong but did it despite that because it served their own interests and desires. I’m not saying most villains shouldn’t have more depth but some people are simply bad people.
@overlydramaticpanda6 жыл бұрын
+Eric Adkins Sorry for jumping in on this discussion but I'm kind of curious what you would classify as "insane". I mean, do you mean full-blown psychosis or just anything that deviates from "normal human behaviour" down to things like compulsive lying? For example, forget murder for the moment. Crimes like rape or torture - in other words, crimes that are committed for no reason and serve no benefit to anyone except for the pain of the victim and brief power for the perpetrator - would you say people have to be insane to commit these sorts of crimes or do you think they see some benefit in it beyond just inflicting pain on someone else? For my money, I've long held the belief that the "villain with explainable motives" IS the norm to the point where it's actually starting to become a shackle rather than a tool. Nowadays, it seems every villain has to seem sympathetic to a degree, every villain has to have a sad backstory or a backstory which shows he has reasons to "blame" the heroes, or deep-rooted family issues or something to "explain away the bad". I have nothing against complex villains at all, but I don't think the "people are never just evil" mindset is strictly true. Whether we like it or not, there are people out there who revel in causing pain for its own sake and the truth is you don't even have to look very far to find them. One of the examples I often give in these discussions is Iago in Othello who offers no less than five separate motivations to the audience for his actions, each more nonsensical than the last and straight-up refuses to provide a definitive answer when confronted at the end of the play. He is the definition of a "motiveless" villain and is often hailed as one of the greatest villains in western literature as well as one of the most interesting, in no small part because of the mystery of exactly why he did what he did. Villains with explicable (and occasionally understandable) motives have their place, yes, just as tragic villains, fallen heroes, and straight-up Freudian messes do, but above anything else the type of villain needs to work with the scope of the story being told. A personal conflict between hero and villain needs a personal connection, whereas I'd be perfectly fine not knowing exactly why someone wants to destroy 50% of all life in the universe because at that point, on that scale, it becomes unnecessary. One can easily come up with hundreds of motivations on one's own if they want to but it's not a question that desperately needs a solid answer. Whoa, that got long. Sorry about that...
@OtterSpace9756 жыл бұрын
Overly Dramatic Panda I would say that these people who enjoy causing harm for harm's sake are insane. Sadists are often irrational, and many suffer from psychosis or schizophrenia. I'm not saying excuse them. And I'm pretty sure they have rational reasons for doing what they do. They aren't bad in thier eyes. That's the only argument I'm making. That villains should never see themselves as the bad guy, and should have clear goals and motivations, to keep it realistic and relatable. That results in a better story 100% of the time. Iago was written by a master storyteller, and he could write lazily and still shit gold. If Iago had clear motivations and was relatable, I'm sure the story would be better. But he didn't have to for the Bard to make him a good character. I see where you're coming from, but weather they see it as a "necessary evil, actually think they're helping someone, or are just insane, people never see themselves as the bad guy.

Personally I think this moment should be scripted just a bit differently to add more weight to it. Should have been... Child-Gamorra: Did you do it? Thanos: Yes Child-Gamorra: Was it worth it? Thanos: (Thanos is unable to look her in the eyes as sadness furrows his brow) (Sunset scene: Thanos has to collect himself emotionally, for a moment, before smiling in his contentment.) I also think they should have had another flashback scene of Gamorra interacting with Thanos as a child and actually having a real father daughter moment. A moment where she actually called him 'dad' for once. This coupled with the scene where he throws her off: If as she was falling she screamed the name "Dad" then showing how much it wounds Thanos in that moment to be really reminded that she was truly his daughter, even in her mind.

It’s actually cool to listen to the Russo brothers’ commentary for this movie because they point out that the only way they felt this movie would work as a cohesive story was to make it about Thanos and his “hero’s journey.” That’s why it’s subversive yet satisfying. Similarly, when they talk about Civil War and how the fact that the audience is introduced to this idea of there being more winter soldiers causing us to internally assume that Tony and Cap would have to come together to defeat them, yet that is not what happens and the movie actually leaves them even more fractured rather than trying to repair the damage that had already been done.

When I went to go see Infinity War, it was about a week after its release (I generally do this just in case a movie turns out to be a complete dumpster fire and I don’t waste money). Immediately, when the movie was being memed to death, I knew I didn’t even need to see a review to know it was going to be good. I invited my girlfriend to see the movie, at first she declined as she didn’t like neither Star Wars nor any super hero movie, but after some explaining, she agreed to see it. She has never seen any marvel movie or knows about any of the characters, but she squeezed my arm throughout the majority of the really tense moments, and after watching it, she wanted to see the rest of the marvel movies and the next avengers movie. If I took her to see the last Jedi, she wouldn’t be interested in even seeing any other Star Wars movie. If a movie franchise can’t do this, then there is a major problem.

Infinity War was great. You know why? Because when Tony was stabbed, the whole theater gasped. When Gamora died, the whole theater fell silent. When Peter (spidey) cried, so did the theater. When Thanos snapped, another collective gasp. We all knew it was coming, but it still caught us by surprise. A great movie resonates with its audience. When I saw The Last Jedi, the only scene that made any impact was the lightspeed scene and it only caused everyone to be silent. Not much of a reaction.

If Rian Johnson really wanted to subvert expectations, all he had to do was have Rey and Kylo team up after killing Snoke. Rey had no attachments to the Resistance other than just being a light side character. End the movie with Leia then using the map from the first movie to meet up with Luke Skywalker herself to tell him that he is now their only hope, but instead he gives her his lightsaber to say, "No. We are." The themes of Rey turning to the dark side is suggested because she is untrained in the ways of the force. There is no reason she should understand how to resist it. Being wronged her entire life should be enough fuel for her to go on a power trip when given the opportunity. Instead, we got what we got just because she has to be a likable character or something? Episode VII suggested that Kylo is pulled toward the light side and is not completely fallen. He should be redeemed in Episode IX and Rey being unredeemable in the eventual conclusion. There is so much you can do with it. My guess is that Colin Trevorrow wanted something like this set up for Episode IX, but he was dealt such a bad hand for the last movie that he wanted no part of it.

The light speed scene in the last jedi was incredible illogical according to the other 2 trilogies. Light speed is going through a worm hole that means when you come out of it, it would've been the same as going lightspeed. Thus is also why whenever you see a ship come out of light speed, it immediately stops or is going much slower because they're not breaking to slow down, they're coming out of a different dimension. Pretty much the light speed scene in the last jedi is complete trash.

I have enjoyed most of the marvel movies up to this point (iron man 3, ant man, and thor 2 duds imho) but infinity war was a cut above. When it ended the theater was dead quiet. I dont know if I've ever been in a theater with a more deeply effected audience. There was no raucous applause, eventually some quiet murmurs started up. If you told me 20 years ago, or even after the success of Iron Man, that a Marvel movie would effect mainstream America so emotionally I would have said you were out of your mind. I don't read comic books and odds are 70 percent of the people in the theater with me hadn't read one either. Building a cinematic universe was the only way to get audiences like me to care deeply enough about the heroes that we could be effected in such a way. You can't do that in one movie. But even with the cinematic universe I did not think anyone would have the guts to make a Marvel movie like that. Everyone knows DC makes the dark gritty movies and Marvel makes the lighthearted funny ones, right? Infinity War validated the idea of cinematic universes with it's large scope and good execution. It rendered the concept into an art form.

I was working heavily right when it came out, to the point that it was Sunday night after work and I didn't even realize it was opening weekend. I made it into the 11:40 showing, literally the last one in town. Me and like 10-15 other people. Small group. But we had the same reaction. Somebody went to the bathroom, but we all just sat in silence for the stinger. Never quite had a movie experience like that. (I did have an audible "oh, shit" at the lightspeed jump tho) And I found it odd too. I cried at GotGv2 (stuff w my dad), but my friends didn't and so we were on kinda different wavelengths. Everybody I've talked to about Infinity War has talked about how intense and well-done it is. (I have an older friend on FB who also had to tell his kids they wouldn't disappear after it was over. Funny anecdote to put in.) Weird for any piece of art to have so universal a response. And part of that is the variety. Goofy cosmic Guardians; goofy grounded Thor; military/Murica guy Cap; afro-technical Black Panther; whatever your flavor, they were in IW, and done justice. I was a big Star Wars EU reader when I was a kid (lived at the library, basically). But all of that stems from one time. I asked my mom about it recently, she confirmed I was right. I was maybe 3 or 4 and the whole trilogy was on TV. I got through ANH and Empire "glued to the TV", says my mom. At the end of it, I went out crying to my mom. "What if I can't watch it all at once?" "You don't have to, sweetie. You've been watching it a long time." I thought it was real. Like, really a galaxy far far away. My home life was fine up until it wasn't. Star Wars was my escape. And before TLJ, it was fun escapism. Even the first time I saw TLJ, I rolled my eyes at the whole horse thing, and gave an audible "are you serious?" when Rose knocked Finn out of the way. Some ppl laughed at me. Haha. But alas. Now that everyone in the world's given their opinion, I'm still stuck here, wishing I could feel like those old movies made me feel. IW might've struck a chord bc we've all had to sacrifice in order to get the things we want. It's inevitable, as you get older. I think TLJ didn't hit one for the reasons he talked about, but also because it wasn't magic. I mean, Disney and Lucasfilm, you'd think they couldn't mess that up. But they played it so safe, they ended up killing the yearly plan. Dunno how they'll get out of this one. Funny that we're all concerned about what'll happen next after IW, but we're REALLY concerned about what happens next off-screen in Ep IX. Screw imagining superheroes bringing ppl together; comics did that for years. Can you imagine a mainline series bomb? After what JJ let Rian do, I don't think even giving him back the reins is a good idea. (I'm on record saying it was a bad idea from the outset-- bc of the never-answered Mystery Boxes, that's all he does, ever-- so I'm not looking forward to having more questions than answers after IX just so I'll buy tickets for X for sure.)

I didn’t know what he would look like, but Megamind (a blue Alien vs a purple one) was like a sneak peak of what I wanted in 2009, and 9 years later, Thanos fulfilled the prophecy. 1 villain was all it took for me to have hope. Infinity War did this execution quite well. More so than Empire Strikes Back did dare I say. Thanos was a real character with motives that made sense, the movie didn't feel like a good vs evil story like other Marvel movies. Both The Avengers and Thanos' intentions were justified and they were both the hero in their own point of view. It wasn't a good vs evil story anymore, it was who's strong enough to overcome their obstacles and accomplish their goal first. Yes in the first half Thanos was an egocentric prick but after he killed Gamora he felt guilt and sorrow. He actually developed as a character, he didn't kill others for bragging rights anymore and just killed to accomplish his goal. When Thanos collected all the Infinity Stones and successfully wiped out half the population in the universe, there was no evil laugh or monologue afterwards, all he did was stare over the horizon feeling satisfied of himself. Meanwhile The Avengers were left in despair after their first ever failure as half of their colleagues faded into dust. You could actually feel the pain of their crushing defeat. While I am aware that Part 2 will probably go back to the good vs evil formula that everyone and their mother knows, just know that Part 1 wasn't about superheroes saving the day, the protagonist wasn't some brave and heroic chosen one destined to save the world. Infinity War part 1 had none of that, but it had Thanos. Infinity War part 1 revolves around Thanos and his quest to retrieve the Infinity Stones to do what he thinks will help the ecosystem. What makes Infinity War so great is how it separates itself from other Marvel movies and how it sets itself up for the end, *AND DOES IT RIGHT (cough Last Jedi cough).* Instead of a generally light hearted tone and comedy that we all know Marvel as, it instead goes for a darker more ominous tone. Instead of being about the heroes it's about the supposed villain. It all ends with the "villain" achieving his lifelong goal and the heroes are left hopeless from their crushing defeat.

You could even argue that Thanos was the chosen one, destined to bring order and peace to the galaxy, in his own perspective. Interestingly, his story plays out along the lines of the Hero's Journey near to a T.

Strange that I found this one of the most emotional MCU movies and one of the funniest.

Every villain is the hero of their own story, right? Thanos and each subgroup of heroes had their own parallel story arc within the movie, all of them progressing in the traditional heroic manner. All of the good guys' arcs come crashing into Thanos's arc and get demolished one by one (Titan gang almost gets the Gauntlet except no they don't, Wakanda gang prevents him from getting the Mind Stone except no they don't, Thor's*extremely* personal and emotionally weighted vengeance quest pays off except no it doesn't). It's fantastic.

@@DISTurbedwaffle918 EXACTLY! That is subversion done RIGHT! Thanos works so well because they commit to the moral grayness. The storyline, and even several scenes, is crafted as if Thanos is the hero. He is undeniably the protagonist and the star of the show.

A thing I loved in infinity war was how they handled the "Marvel humor" (something TLJ desperatly tries to emulate). They start of as any Marvel movie with quips and banter but unlike TLJ they understand theme and mood and tone it down as Thanos becomes more and more of a threat leaving only a few characters who people excpect to joke in dire situations. This is something so many movies get wrong, they only go for the cheap laughts instead of making actual characters. Wish it wasnt like that

When Luke asks Rey where she's from and she says she come from nowhere and Luke says everyone comes from somewhere then follows it with CLANG...yeah that's pretty much nowhere....... fuck me. That's such a tonal gear cruncher I think I physically winced in the theater.

I had to laugh in the after credit scene when Samuel L. Jackson vanished just before he could finish saying his signature motherfucker. It actually is one of my favourite parts of the whole movie.

The first scene that comes to mind is Rocket seeing Buckys arm and comments how he wants that arm in the middle of the final battle. It fits with his character and history of collecting prosthetics, who knew building your characters properly could mean so much?! Looking at you DCEU...

@@KibaPwnU That's just one of the many things which make the Marvel movies work and why they only seem to get better thus far. The little things which may only take a second but still add so much to the whole experience.

To be fair, the Marvel characters already had a huge amount of screen time to build their characters and have their humor play off of each other in successful ways.

I think she was a rather important part of Endgame. Without her and Thanos fight Tony would have never thought about taking out the infinity stones. I think people are too mean to Captain Marvel and I don't see why she gets all the hate.

I love that Infinity War is a movie about a noble knight fighting for his vsion of a perfect world. Thanos is not only the hero in his own mind, he is the protagonist of this movie. We could all guess the ending by going into the movie, yet still i was so surprised by it, and that the Russos just made this huge leap of faith in terms of "risky" storytelling (which i wish all the big companys would), that i said "Holy Shit... he did it. We lost." out loud to my cat, while crying my eyes out. Even now, if i watch Infinity War and Endgame end-to-end, i cry like a baby. From the satisfying depression IW creates to the just epic and heartfelt solution that EG offered. (And the aftermath in Homecoming) From "We lost" to "We won...?", and i want to stress this little word "we". Aside from LotR and HP there are no franchises that ever made me feel like "we" did anything. (Sorry, i like the original Star Wars trilogy, but that was an fantastic space opera and never really got me that enthralled) This franchise had so much Humanity in it. Even if they are Superhuman and the villains only got good with Ego - Kurt Russel... what a performance. Comparing him in "Soldier" where he is adequate to his outstanding performance as Ego is impossible. And Thanos, oh god. Thanos could easily have been a Frollo. But he is a Masterpiece of a villain. Oh boi, what a ride it has been. Sincerely i hope that marvel learned it lessons with Guardians and the amazing Ragnarok, letting a great directors explore their take on great storys. Sorry for the long comment :D
