"I looked at him, and I saw myself." That's called *empathy*, people. Also, historically, Viking women absolutely fought alongside their men. One historian told me that the Vikings started leaving their women at home during raids because the women killed too many people and didn't leave them enough to bring back as slaves. Every cat owner HAS to love this movie, especially those of us who have miniature panthers (a.k.a. black cats). Btw, the animators based the Night Fury design on cats, which is why Toothless reminds you of your kitty. :)

Those emotional moments between Stoik and Hiccup are underrated, among reactors, they often get overlooked in my opinion. That moment when Stoik almost fell after disowning Hiccup, and the expression of absolute shock/pain in his face of what just happened, is one of my favorites moments of this movie, right alongside when Stoik saves both Hiccup and Tothless just telling him that's he's proud to call him his son.
@SusanaCanales1
@SusanaCanales1 3 жыл бұрын
Right! While painful, it was one of my favorite moments. It’s one of the few times we see him be truly vulnerable. I always interpreted as a moment of regret, like, what he said just hit him, an “oh my gods, what have I done?”, and he didn’t mean it, but, he couldn’t take it back right then either, so, he presses forward. Yessss. When he tells him he’s proud to call him his son, I always choke up. I’ve always wanted my dad to tell me he’s proud of me or praise me at something, so, parents being proud of their children always gets to me.

Stoic is hands down one of my favorite animated characters. There are just so many layers in his story. In the first one we have these subtle moments, in the second we see his trauma, the reason why he fears the idea of "controlling dragons" and losing loved ones to them, not to mention his huge heart and what it meant to be a leader for him. In the third, during those flashbacks, we can also see his anctics with baby Hiccup and how he had caring moments with him, raising him on his own and passing down what he knew - which indeed helped Hiccup as an adult. Idk he's an amazing character and one of the foundations of why this franchise is amazingly touching.

That's the thing I love about finale's. That train of thought no longer applies. Every single character loses their plot armor. Also originally they were going to model Toothless more after a wolf (but still the midnight black colour, not a normal wolf colour) , but then someone saw one one of the animator's desktop screen , which was a black leopard and wen "yeah, that's probably better". Then as "research" used the lead animator's cat as a model or inspiration for the movements and expressions , and it shows because Toothless looks and sometimes moves like a cat , is loyal , caring and protective of his friends like a dog (also occasionally wags his tail like one too lol) , and is able to be ridden much like a horse.

In the book series (aimed at a much younger audience) the dragons do talk, and Hiccup's superpower is that he can speak dragon, rather than engineering. My love for this film is stronger (I shed some tears in the theater too), but I adore how much the author loved and hyped this film despite the very different world building, and how she introduced dragons large enough to ride in the books right after the film came out (her series was inspired by how different she and her father were, while still having a close, loving family. toothless' behaviors are based on a lot of the animators cats, and the shape is based on the axolotl. the jet black is to camouflage with the night sky because night furies are nocturnal. the blast is acetylene and oxygen (plasma) and explodes on impact or after a couple seconds. the night fury also gets close enough to the speed of sound at top speed to cause its wings to whistle but doesnt actually break the sound barrier which is why theres no sonic boom

Fun fact: Toothess' eye opening when Hiccup finds him in the woods was apparently actually an animation error, it was meant to stay closed I think at that shot. But they thought the "error" was better than the initial plan and went with it.

Actually i kinda understand why Stoick and the rest of the tribe was so angry. Everyone used to say or do thoughtless things when they were angry. It was not just about Hiccup lying, but also about refusing his own people. When he dropped his helmet and said he wasn’t one of them, he practically disowned himself and since he got the helmet from his mother, he offended her memory as well. He acted for good reason, but what he did with it betrayed all his people, their traditions and their history. I would also remind everyone that neither Stoick nor the other Vikings saw how Toothless andHiccup befriended and the dragons was forced to raid them. All they know is that the “unholy offspring of lightning and death itself” came out of nowhere and that he is dangerous, so they need to protect their peers. In their eyes, dragons are still cruel, killing machines that have attacked them for centuries, burned their homes, wounded and killed their loved ones. Just as Stoick’s wife, Valka, was kidnapped by a dragon next to her a couple of months old baby, or just asGobber' hands and feet were bitten and not so long ago they even wanted to kill Hiccup. All they knew throughout their lives was to kill or be killed, they had been raised for that since childhood.

So I saw this in 3D. After the queen dragon is destroyed, the ash that falls as Stoic looks for Hiccup felt like it was right in front of me and my parents. It added to the stillness of that moment. The best 3D moment in theaters for me!

I love Kung Fu Panda, I really do... but How To Train Your Dragon is perfect in pretty much every way and beats it out by a (imo) small margin as the best Dreamworks movie. Although personally Kung Fu Panda 2 is my favorite Dreamworks movie, the HTTYD trilogy is arguably the best animated trilogy.

How to train your dragon 1 unironically has some of the best written, paced, composed and choreographed scenes in the history of animation (which makes up the characters looking a bit derpy at times.) Jay Baruchel killed it as Hiccup. He encompassed that awkward puberty ridden teenage kid persona *without* making him seem too whiny or a POS, which isnt easy to do. His contrast to Gerard Butlers confident booming voice is flawless. Seeing hiccup grow throughout the film starting off as a weak, reclusive, insecure, underdog living in his father's shadow, and a civilization of meat-head vikings stuck in their ways. To a confident dragon trainer, (through at times force and other times volition), and learning to be strong in his *own* way, was very satisfying. Toothless design is genius, he draws elements from other well beloved characters like stitch in terms of cute playfulness while maintaining believability as a deadly dragon. The humor is very realistic and while child-friendly, never felt forced or outlandish. (Maybe with snotlout, but I actually know kids that acted like him so he gets a pass) Every dragon in the OG film is bursting with character and personality, the fact that the designers took the time to give each one truly unique abilities (like lighting themselves on fire, or a two headed dragon that sparks and ignites a flame) makes the film that much more interesting and makes the world feel real. To this day the final fight with the mother dragon is the most dynamic and striking of any animated film I've ever seen. The way the camera angle is shot in multiple scenes really makes you feel the weight of a mid-air battle, which is actually very hard to implement ( looking at you man of steel ) at times the camera gives you the perspective of toothless and then at times the perspective of the observers watching from the ground, watching the rays of light shine through the smog in suspense. This accompanied with the incredible soundtrack is enough to give me chills regardless of how many times I've seen it. (Sorry about the rant, I just really appreciate this film)

36:44 Not sure if you saw it but the holes that Toothless shot in the Queen dragon's wings were meant to tear open. When she realized the ground was coming up fast, she desperately opened her wings to brake and slow down. This only proceeded to allow the holes in her wings to expand from the rapid air current tearing through. Instead of slowing, she had no parachute in a sense. Thus. Crash landing.

Toothless' drawing is an (admittedly very . . . abstract, lol) picture of Hiccup. It's diagonal instead of straight on - near the bottom left, you can see his mouth (seems open, like it's making an O shape), then a little up and to the right is his round nose, then up from that is his eyes, and all around is his hair.

You can really see what they took as inspiration for toothless. He clearly has a fighter jet look with the way the sound comes RIGHT before an attack, not loud, super fast, super agile. He also has a lot of cat like traits, even some doglike traits with how loyal he becomes in the later movies.

Okay, I know I'm late finding my way here, but something I absolutely LOVE about this film and this series is that there is almost nothing that is set up that isn't paid off later. Hiccup being good with inventing things and trying to replace Toothless' wing, the things he learns from bonding with Toothless help him in dragon training, "you just gestured to all of me", Hiccup seeing Toothless caught in his net says "I did this", which Stoic also says when he finds Toothless before revealing Hiccup is wrapped in his wings, "not so fireproof on the inside" comes into play in the final fight, the noise causing disorientation to the big dragon, but also the kids dragons. And the entire series is like this!? Brimming with all these tiny details that come together brilliantly. I'm so happy to see that I found this channel when the other two are already up. 😂

I love how you opened this❤ I just now thought about this (even though ive watched this movie alot) In the scene where Toothless is demanding an apology from Astrid, wouldnt alot of those flying positions be impossible without hiccups help? (Using the back tail) and we even see at the end (after she apologized) that the back fin pettled foot is atop Toothlesses head. I wonder how that worked?

4:16 hiccup can’t because when he try’s out his inventions, if they don’t work perfectly on the first go, then EVERYONE stops him from trying to improve it. I mean, the process of investing IS trial and error, but Berk sees it as destructive to try new things.

Awesome reaction! I think HTTYD’s cool because there’s lots of different concepts and stuff happening within the storyline. Friendship is a HUGE part of the movies as well, how Hiccup and Toothless met and formed a strong friendship with each other…and the other two movies in the series illustrate the development of Hicctooth further. One of the best bromances you’ll ever find :)

When stoic is finally proud of hiccup and turns around at the realization really resonates with me because it reminds me of when I tried to enlist like my dad (he wasn't around very much growing up) and I used to do drugs beforehand. I felt so great when he was proud of me, but I didn't give myself enough time for all of the drugs to clear out of my system, 3 months was how long I was clean at that point, so when my drug test came back and I was turned down I was so ashamed and my dad was so disappointed with me that he couldn't, and still doesn't believe that I put my all into enlisting. Our relationship has always been rough, but that one thing has put an even bigger wall between us than ever before. It hurts and we still haven't gotten past it, but I haven't given up on our relationship 4 years later because of how much I love and respect him. I want him to be proud of me but it hurts knowing that we still have that massive wall between us because of my mistake.

Toothless is very feline and that was done on purpose, when creating toothless the creators observed cats and I heard something about a cat with a cape? I think toothless is supposed to show how cats truely are, they’re actually pretty damn affectionate and fiercely protective of their family (just like toothless is with hiccup) and yes they have a crap-ton of attitude but when dogs have attitude people call it “personality”, double standards much? Anyway, I really enjoy your reactions and this is also one of my favourite animated movies (toothless is best cat-bat)

11:13 Shape theory: squares are sturdy or stubborn, triangles are power or danger, and circles are friendly. Watch as Toothless goes from all triangles and squares to circles. From his pupils, to his head angle, to his wings (oval around his body), to his stance, to his back. Remember this when you watch The Bad Guys, whenever Wolf gets that good feeling.

In my family everyone is super stubborn, even the cat. Because of this, I always felt that my dad and hiccup's are similar. Not really personality wise, but how even though he could get mad or frustrated, you always saw him trying his best to take care of Hiccup, even when he didn't really know what to do. When this movie came out I was about 4 and watched it around 3 years later, but I still made the dad-dad connection (not conciously, legit just realised that today) and bawled my eyes off. Now I've watched the movie countless times and I didn't cry this time because: 1. Whenever the tears were ready, you cut to the next scene. 2. I'm stubborn as hell and hate crying so I contained myself, but I would've ended up losing if I had watched the full movie. Even seeing the last scene felt weird as hell, but I just realized that it wasn't nostalgia, but that it was the first time I watched it without having been crying non-stop for the last god kows how many minutes. (easily over 30) This movie really messes you up, and the secuels don't go easy on that either. A full emotional rollercoaster that no-one's save from.
