A great trick I learned somewhere (can't remember where): to keep your mind from wandering/worrying, retrace the day you just had in your mind but backwards. And if your thoughts wander off again, once you notice it go back to where you left off and continue. It's basically impossible to make it all the way to the start of the day

"Ok, how to fall asleep, what notes would i ever possibly need?" Well, 1 and a half minute in and Mr. Lewis here had just given the definition of "trying". "Trying is perceived by the brain as facing a problem, causing it to release adrenaline which leads to you being aroused". Sleeping problem defined at 100%. Neurochemical definition of "trying" unlocked. Thanks Lewis!

Getting that manta sleep mask has been a game changer for me. Also putting on a 20 minute wind down meditation type thing - the same one each time and I’m asleep by the end of it. Playing white noise keeps me asleep through the night. I’ve only just discovered how to fall asleep and finally have a good relationship with sleep after just avoiding it my whole life and neglecting it because I thought I couldn’t t fall asleep unless exhausted.

A page-a-day diary by the bed is good if the mind is racing. Write out what is swirling in the mind; it 'processes' those thoughts, and the act of writing per se helps calm the mind down.

The BEST thing I have added to my sleep routine is listening to audio books! For me, it works like pure magic, it is seriously that helpfull, and if you use audible, there is even a sleep timer that you can set, so that if you fall asleep to it, you don't wakeup having finished the book lmao.

ever since I got those first 2 tips in your newsletter 2weeks(ish?) ago, my sleeps gotten so much better! And that Kurdish barber, he knows what he’s doing! ;) also also I NEED that robe!!! Food for thought on worry time: I’ve been doing it for about a year now, and besides being an absolute game-changer, I’ve noticed over time that when I’ve blown my neurone fuses with worry it leaves me feeling at peace way better than any attempt at meditation. I find it reassuring and validating - the quickest way out is through :)

A pro tip that I've been using myself is to deliberately be bored during certain times of the day, because it gives me time to think instead of distracting and blasting my brain with constant dopamine hits. So when I commute to work by train, I don't scroll on my phone constantly. At most I'll put some music on in my headphones to drown out the noise around me, otherwise I'll just sit or stand while letting my mind wander. It gives me time to think of stuff that otherwise will distract me when it's time to sleep.

I like the sleep compression idea. I've actually recently started experimenting with having only 7 hours sleep. I also find for some reason that I wake up way more refreshed when I finish 30 min before a sleep cycle is supposed to end. What I mean by that is a sleep cycle is supposed to be 1.5 hours, so theoretically the best times to set your alarm are after 1.5 hours, 3 hours, 4.5 hours, 6 hours, 7.5 hours and 9 hours. But I've found that 1 hour, 2.5 hours, 4 hours, 5.5 hours, 7 hours and 8.5 hours works better for me.

Good stuff. But this raises another issue. Some solutions may indicate the problem to solve wasn't the problem. I usually sleep great but I also often have problems falling asleep and waking up in the middle of the night. Is it because I was worrying? Well my worries have been pretty consistent for a few years now. There's always some tax bill, there's always something broken, ..... Nothing soul shattering or life and death. It's always amazing to me that when the weather turns cold and I plug in my electric blanket how perfect my sleep becomes. Does the blanket make me think less? I think it's just more comfortable. I have a theory of invisible drafts. Tiny drafts we aren't conscious of that keep us awake. If we are outside in the cold and unable to get warn, we can't sleep. This keeps us from dying of hypothermia in our sleep. I noticed years ago that when I slept in a sleeping bag liner I always slept better. So that's always a fall back and it usually helps. No drafts possible. My brain has been busy, my problems ever present for decades. Some nights I sleep great, some I don't. I first make sure I'm comfortable. By far the biggest impediment is Do I need to pee? Even if I'd just gone... go again. Now it's not the issue. Neurotic OCD? Maybe - but it's done. Physical comfort seems far more important than mental comfort. (The recent American election night is a classic example. The worst possible outcome was clearly happening. This is greatly unsettling to me. I had to drive up to my boat to make sure it was securely tied to the dock during the windstorm that had just started. My boat was rocking a lot. I actually love this. I went to bed at 9 and slept like a baby. I woke up the next day fully rested and resumed being miserable.) I noticed in college that about every three weeks I was miserable. I thought, maybe this is like a male version of menstrual cycles for women? Nope. Three weeks consistently. Maybe something rotten just happened to happen every three weeks? I looked at my journals. Bombed a test... that would do it, three weeks later dated a terrific woman, new love.... miserable. That doesn't make any sense..... All I could find was three weeks. So after that I decided my best course was to just see it as cyclical, happening to me, but not caused by anything real. So, don't give it undue attention. That was 50 years ago. Probably still happening. I do have days where I just feel anxious. There is always something that could've caused it, but I know it's just the three week thing.... ignore it, or use it to do something about a problem I'd been putting off. The other thing I noticed is that some mornings I wake up and don't feel as rested. Everything seems okay. Then I find out I'd spent the night sleeping on one of my fat fountain pens. How did I not feel that? Some part of me did. Nights after I changed my sheets are usually great. So wrinkles, pens, drafts and the whatevers. be comfortable, cozy, and just go pee again... is the better path to zzzzzzz

Thank you for your tips, will give them a try! I've been having sleep issues for years, mostly as waking up after about 4-5 hours of sleep, unable to fall back asleep. Have tried implementing most of the protocols from Dr. Matthew Walker, some might've helped a bit, but not much. So probably it's more of a psychological problem for me, but haven't managed to find a solution yet.

Nothing works for me at all. I can turn off my mind and just lie there for hours. I just started eating magnesium rich foods like buckwheat, pumpkin seeds and almonds. I also ordered vitamin D, magnesium, l tryptophan and l theanine. I really hope my sleep will improve.
@Charles-Windham
@Charles-Windham 25 күн бұрын
Ditch the tryptophan. Seratonin is carcinogenic. Replace it with glycine. Vitamin D may be best int the am. L-Theanine , glycine, melatonin (not just for sleep - it is a master antioxidant also) and also Magtein. Sometimes I just concentrate on thinking: "Don't think" ...every time I start to think of something. Hey, just trying to help.
