During the Korean War, Douglas MacArthur had an interesting way the United States of America could gain victory over North Korea and China. Involving many Nukes. Many Many Nuclear Weapons actually.

Macarthur: There was no military justification for the dropping of the bomb on Japan Also Macarthur:
@BeaglzRok1
@BeaglzRok1 Ай бұрын
I mean, Hiroshima was mostly a target because it was a city with geography conducive to the bomb's blast, and Nagasaki was only a target because 1. Truman didn't want to nuke Kyoto when it was such an important city to the Japanese, and 2. the original target of Kokura became overcast when it was time to fly out. Plus, the rest of the Axis capitulated, there's no allies to swoop in and bail them out. Korea connected directly to the mainland of the newly-Communist China and slightly further from the USSR. Minimizing reinforcing personnel is absolutely a priority, especially in hindsight where that exact thing happened because pushing to a border they could still cross fueled his zeal.

@@Limrasson I really think, based on how MacArthur acted in the past, he would probably wanted to use nuke to escalate conflict so that he would took the personal glory as the supreme commander of the UN army when everything settled. I mean he was famous for attention seeking and alway tries to take away his subordinates achievements, people like Wendell Fertig doesn't even get a medal under him despite having significant personal contribution to the war, so it makes a lot of sense if he simply wanted to stir things up for his own sake.

A point of clarification: the radiation belt would not have been created by the atomic weapons, it was intended to be created by physically spreading the cobalt across the area. The Korean War began prior to the US successfully developing its first thermonuclear weapon. The weapons dropped would have been used with similar effect as Hiroshima/Nagasaki: an air burst designed for maximum destruction, minimum fallout. Radioactivity would be mostly limited to the atmosphere and blown away within hours, with minimal residual radiation on the ground lasting maybe a couple of months. Instead, MacArthur's plan was to put radioactive material in the soil, which would have made the path uncrossable for a century.

The belt of cobalt wasn't even intended, it's just an unintended consequence of using the bombs according to then accepted doctrine.

My grandfather flew a recon mission for this operation. He was in a small, quiet plane with a CIA man. Their task was to pick places to drop the bombs. Long story short he got shot down, survived the crash with the CIA operative and split up. He was caught and a POW for about five minutes. He basically went "WHAT'S THAT?!" pointing off into the diatance and while the troops were looking he bolted. Was bwhind enemy lines for over a months. When he got over to the South Korea line he weighed close to 95 lbs. He had medical conditions for be reat of his life, but died at the ripe old age of 90. His buddies were on a carrier anchored off the coast of Japan with specially modified jet (each holding one nuke). Most of his friends died a various cancers later due to the prolonged exposure to the radiation from the bombs. Papa's records had been sealed up until the late 90s amd he didn't speak of it before that time.

@@lkh-xj1ck I asked my dad the same thing. He apparently chose the right/shortest path to the border. My papa did not. My papa did say he was flying so close to the tree tops that he could see the smoke coming out of the barrel of the gin that shot them down. They had to move fast as soon as they crash landed since the North Koreans were going to be on them in less than five minutes. He also did recon missions into NK by jeep. They had numerous reports of very odd battle wounds on our men (missing arms and legs with clean edges on the stumps). He confirmed the NK had resorted to cannibalism. They went to a SK village where every man, woman and child had been killed. The US came in and dug a mass grave with heavy machinery to bury them in as they were very decomposed. Well apparently some dipstick didn't mark the boundary of the grave and my papa stepped on it when he was doing patrol. Sunk up to his neck in rotting human flesh and bone. I never understood how he was sane after hearing all that.

Also Ridgeway lost all those gains in the Spring Offensive. Furthermore, by this stage of the war the conflict was more similar to WW1 than WW2 in nature.
