The main thing she is missing is a unique feature to recognize her by. Taylor doen't need that anymore because she is so big now, but it used to be her guitar, her red lipsticks, the bangs. Olivia has (had) that long hair and the color purple is basically hers now within the pop industry. Her outfits always walk that fine line between girly, Y2K sparkle and grunge/ Avril Lavigne. Sabrina has finally made it and look at the change in appearance. Before the suuccess of her recent album, she always wore (very similarly to gracie), whatever is modern and now you connect her image to the 50s blowout hair + old hollywood glam looks/ sexy glitter lingerie (for shows). Chappel has the drag clothing, and most importantly, the red , curly hair.. Note that before Chappel permanently turned to the red hair, her career was a lot smaller too. People need to see you and immediately remeber that they saw you before. And gracie looks like at least 7 girls out of my university spanish course.

@mat-nk1tk the comment isn't about whether or not I like her or think she 'deserves' her success. It's more about analyzing her public image for fun. If you don't think that's a fun thing to do, you can go and listen to her music and just ignore my comment, no worries. But this is a video on a Yt channel about opinions on celebrities lol

This is the reality of music as a business! Music is a product, and the “image” of the musician is in a way a product as well. Products need to be marketed well and stick in the minds of consumers. Gracie at this point is just a regular girl with a lot of money, it’s hard to remember her unless it’s about people hating on her.

From a marketing standpoint, she truly lacks a unique selling point. Nothing in terms of her image or her sound have anything remotely unique that sets her apart from her peers. Why would I listen to a watered down version of Taylor Swift when I can just listen to Taylor herself?Coupled with the the fact that she’s a nepo baby, her attempt to be seen as a sad indie girl comes across as extremely manufactured and inauthentic.

i mean its getting better ngl. a few years ago songs by tiktok artists with like a singular hit in them and no real identity would blow up, (ex; that golden hour song, "i know victoria's secret" song, just a ton of songs and not REAL artists in 2019/2020-2022/early2023) but now we have like, real popular artists that arent just taylor swift and harry styles who were around for decades, and olivia rodrigo i guess. chappell roan and sabrina carpenter are like, REAL superstars who have the potential to be iconic and make a lot of hits that stay relevant for years, same with olivia. 2024 pop music has put the genre/industry in WAY better shape than it was back in the day. i mean, i dont listen to much modern music or pop music so who am i to judge, but this is just what i've seen. this is also coming from my perspective as a young teenager, the past few years a lot of people around my age that i knew, their favorite artists were from the 2000s and 2010s or even earlier, and now like every girl in my school and a good amount of the other guys has some 2020s main pop girl as their favorite artist (hip hop/rap has also been awesome this year, way better stuff than a lot of the "soundcloud rap" type of music that's been popular for the past couple years. agree with your sentiment but imo its not that bad, we've had a lot more good acts than non mediocre acts this year, and i think its looking up

I think the hate is honestly understandable. She's a rich nepo-baby making mediocre pop-indie, a genre whose sonic style was defined by it's financial limits. A lot of indie singer-songwriter music sounds the way it does because they can't afford expensive producers or recording equipment. So for a rich girl to imitate that sounds just feels like rich people cosplaying as poor.

@@jlo2715 Sabrina's shtick is nowhere near similar to Taylor's, though. Taylor is a confessional songwriter. They may have similar demographics, but Sabrina doesn't do what Taylor does. And Taylor can't/won't do what Sabrina is doing. Sabrina's success has been with sexy, funny, unserious, absurd songs that aren't really meant to be taken seriously. Taylor may have done songs like "Blank Space," where she pokes fun at herself/how people perceive her, but that's not exactly what Sabrina is doing either. Gracie, however, is doing exactly what Taylor does most of the time, just bad: confessional songwriting. Because Gracie is nowhere near as good as Taylor, she is not anywhere near/will never be nearly as successful as her. Olivia has proven to be as good at confessional songwriting as Taylor and has also become highly successful. Her first single broke records and went number one like everywhere, as did her album; her first tour was an arena tour, she won Grammys, etc... Olivia also has personality and is memorable not only for her incredible songwriting but for her aesthetic. She also targets the same demographic. Olivia is truly a direct threat to Taylor, which is why she and Taylor (most likely) never have anything to do with each other anymore/why she is not treated like Gracie or Sabrina.

I think unfortunately her connections in a way hinder her artistry. Like she is by no means an untalented artist or bad artist, but right now, she is just ok, with some gems. The gems show her potential to become a great artist someday (specifically Risk, That's So True, and Close to You). I can see the seeds of potential in her becoming great, but she's a bit conflated status wise. Like, she's not on the level atm to compete with her contemporaries (Chappell, Billie, Olivia, etc) in terms of artistry. Unfortunately, due to her connections with the likes of her dad, Taylor, and Olivia, people are propping her up to be this amazing pop princess, but she's not there yet imo. I think that's where some people's frustration lies (and then it boils into overhating and diminishing her actual talents). She does resonate with young women and teens (including me!), so there definitely is an appeal there. Artistic wise, I'm not sure if she's completely at the point where her praise is currently warranted, but she's just currently an artist trying to find her footing/niche/voice. I'm sure she'll come into her own soon and can't wait to see where she goes! I do think you make an apt comparison that she kind of is trying to occupy the same lane as Olivia and Taylor but she lacks a unique essence that they have. Olivia and Taylor have such a great talent of writing and creating a personal experience with their songs. You are transported into the story they are trying to tell, and not only you can imagine it, but you can relate it back to your own life, even if the specific details in the song don't actually match up with your experience. Ofc, both women do it in their own style, but that's what draws lots of people to them. I think Gracie has a potential to do the same, but her writing is still just slightly generic/unrefined. Like I said, there is potential seen in her, but it's not realized yet.

My only exposure to Gracie prior to this was someone recommending “I love you, I’m sorry” to me. I didn’t like it, it sounded & felt “fake deep” like, as if someone really wanted to give the *impression* that they’re so introspective and creative. I left it at that and completely forgot about her, didn’t know she apparently had this massive amount of hate, but I’m not surprised and I don’t think it’s unwarranted.

She never really wanted to be famous, she preferred that small following, she only started putting out music for fun with simple videos Good Riddance was her first push, 5 years into her career. The audience grew, Taylor invited her as an opener because she loved her songs after Aaron probably told her about Gracie. Natural growth, yall just don't understand that music is subjective. She never really used her Dads money which is not near as much as ye claim he has, you just don't understand networths. Her first hit was written and recorded with her boyfriend and the music video was done in her room...this is her first tour in arenas...nepo baby is a strong term because she's actually talented. Also what's funny is Gracie inspired some of Olivia's early music... they were and still are friends. Taylor and Gracie also only collabed because Aaron sent an instrumental while they were hanging out. Her push is because people like her, if you don't then don't listen to her. Young girls found her music relatable, her song Friend also trended on TikTok during covid along with I Miss You, I'm Sorry. My teenage sister told me about her and it's very obvious by her fanbase... context is very easy to find

I wouldn't care at all about her being a nepo baby if her music was actually good, but it's boring and generic crap and it gets shoved down our throats because she's well connected. That's what's so annoying about her. There's plenty of celebrities who are nepo babies and people don't really mind them because they are actually talented and good at what they do. That's not the case with her, her music is nowhere near deserving of the amount of hype she gets.

Her most recent album sounds like she’s trying to mimic Taylor and Olivia, but she doesn’t quite understand why their music resonates with people, so while on paper her songs are also narrative, they don’t have the same transportive/emotive quality that Taylor and Olivia’s do and feel kind of empty in comparison. Listen to “That’s So True” and then listen to “All Too Well” or “drivers license”. I know people who saw Gracie open for Taylor and Olivia, and they all said the gulf between her and Taylor/Olivia was even starker in person, whereas you don’t hear people who saw Sabrina, Chappell, Phoebe, etc open for Taylor/Olivia say that. She’s really going to face an uphill battle to maintain her current level of success. I think she’d be better off returning to the sound from her earlier stuff than sticking with Dessner. As much as I like him and his production, I think it only highlights Gracie’s weaknesses (her voice, empty lyrics, etc) rather than her strengths (which I think could be songs more in the vein of “21”, or even “Close To You”).

I honestly don't care if she's an industry plant or if her dad is rich or whatever, but my main problem with Gracie is that she lacks a proper sense of identity in her music. She pulls from a lot of her contemporaries like Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, Lorde, Pheobe Bridgers, etc., yet I can't really even describe what kind of artist she is, since her music is so derivative of the artists I just mentioned. "Close to You" is a decent bop, but that's about it.

With Gracie, it’s great that she’s able to get herself out there and all, but where’s the identity? She doesn’t have a factor or lane that is uniquely hers, Therefore she won’t be easy to recognize as an artist. Lyrically, sonically, and vocally she’s just a blander and grayer version of Taylor Swift. It feels like her musical offerings are a cosplay of both Midnights & Tortured Poets! ( lmao no shade). I’ve noticed lyrically and musically, that she relies on metaphorical lyricism, and uses similar song structures like Taylor, but with her’s there’s an insincerity and disingenuous feel that makes them just Meh. It’s great that she’s been given a lot of support by Tay, but it’s great til it isn’t… I just hope Gracie realizes that; sparse/guitar instrumental tracks, a “forced” indie voice, and pseudo-reflective lyrics just aren’t the easy cheat-code anymore! It’s like Been there-Done that! 👀🙏🏽💯🙏🏽

British indie pop artist Holly Humberstone had also opened for Olivia Rodrigo's SOUR tour back in 2022, and also recently opened for Taylor Swift in London in 2024, but is still nowhere near as big as Gracie Abrams now. For me it's not a problem that Gracie is a nepo baby, but at the same time it's sad how a very generic artist received so many opportunities and support from the industry right from the start. Her debut album was ok but it's not that special, and I'm especially annoyed how her vocals sound like Lorde's impressions. The Secret of Us sounds more generic but have some brighter places, but it's still not enough because vocally an lyrically she doesn't have an authenticity AT ALL
