The number of Americans filing for unemployment insurance soared to 38.6 million this past week, even as some states and cities attempt to re-open their economies from Covid-19 lockdowns. Other hard-hit countries, like Spain and Germany, have a different way of handling unemployment insurance compared to the patchwork system in the United States. Here's how the social safety net for workers in America compares to other systems around the world.

I'm not sure that's a fair comparison with Spain, Sweden, and Germany. Since healthcare and education are considered rights there, many unemployed people even without government support can be better off than Americans on minimum wages (thinking medical loans, student debt, being able to afford life-saving medication like insulin, etc.)...

Millenials have been complaining about it for years. But older people would just say "we had it hard too" then wed point to how wages have stayed the same, and food rent healthcare and transportation have gone up 2x. We get told were just lazy and should just get better jobs..... or that our 100 dollar cell phone or 60 dollar tv was keeping us poor. it's this idea of "personal reponsibility" and "free market" that are allowing corporations to basically derive value from unprotected people. And then blame the unprotected people for being unprotected.

Here in Canada the federal government looks after out unemployment not the provinces or as you call in the U.S. states, we can receive up to $575.00 per week country wide.. Weekly payments range from 14 to 45 weeks depending on the region that is hit hard. A percentage is taken out of our weekly paycheck plus the employer pays a percentage. An the fund doesn't go broke the government looks after any shortfalls in these hard times.

I had two knee replacements, hospital care and out patient physiotherapy, My last surgery I had complications and I had a home nurse visiting at no cost to me. How much would that cost in the U.S. An I didn't go bankrupt or lose my home to high medical bills. I was an IT contractor and I got laid off several times over the years usually after a contract would end and before getting on board with another one. So I have a bit of experience with getting unemployment compensation. When you have a Democrat in the governor's mansion it is easy to get your benefits and the people at the unemployment bureau are friendly and helpful. When a Republican is in charge it's hard to get your benefits, hard to understand how to apply for your benefits, and the people tend to be nasty if they talk to you at all. So I agree with your assessment about the red states.

@Daniel Roberts It's not all that bad. I'm making $3000 + in UI benefits in California. My regular part-time job payed me only $1000-$1500 per month. The benefits have definitely been beefed up, it has been the accessing of funds that's been a nightmare. It took me 50 days to see a dime because my case was complicated, but they backdated every single penny I was owed since March 16 when I was furloughed. The system definitely is in need of reform, but at least I can afford to live on UI at the moment. The changes made by Congress by the CARES Act was a blessing. I also received my one time stimulus payment, and that was separate from my Unemployment Insurance.

I've always been disappointed in how lacking and disjointed the US social saftey nets have been compared to other first world countries given the fact we're one of (if not the most?) richest countries in the world. In the US so many decried other first world countries saftey net systems as a burden on taxpayers (despite the magnitude we allow corporations to get away with tax shielding & bailouts) and now it's come back to bite us. Now the US is scrambling to figure out how to implement new social safety nets, and we'll be so much less prepared to go back to normal compared to other developed countries. How sad.

At the same time, working people gets 1 time payment of $1200 and those who applied for unemployment in March, they are STILL waiting for the first check, we are already in June.

Our local mall is opened but it looks like a ghost-town. Even non-essential businesses that reopened here have limited services and hours because they’ve lost workers who had to find other jobs after they were furloughed. I met a former coworker from a small department store working checkout at a grocery store. That department store now has to hire and retrain her replacement and I know she’s not the only one. So many stores in that mall still haven’t re-opened.

I run a one-year-old distribution center for a major company in the Atlanta area. We are ramping up our business, and since COVID, we have had one hell of a time trying to attract employees to work. And we pay well and have all of the benefits one expects from an F500 company. Our company has seen similar problems in our factories and DCs across the country. The problem, from my POV, is why would people want to work when, in Georgia, the enhanced unemployment is giving people $21 - $24/hour, take home, for just sitting around. The smart people are finding work now, because in a couple of months when the federal UI ends, millions of people are going to be desperately looking for work and the jobs will not be there.

2:56 As a Chicagoan, I know that most people in Illinois, in the 1990's, needed 6 months to find another job after they were terminated One third of the adult (18+) work force had two jobs, 50% of all teenagers 15 and over worked at after-school jobs. The Chicago Sun-Times complained that all of these jobs were subsistence wage jobs...all of them. By the 2000's, terminated ex-employees in Illinois, needed...TWO years... to find another job. As a result food stamps, energy assistance and welfare exploded in Illinois. Author Barbara Ehrenreich wrote two expose books about the job market nightmare all over the country. By the 2008 meltdown, Illinoisans needed THREE years to find a job. As a result, early (62 years old) social security benefit applications in Illinois exploded from 500 thousand yearly to one million annually. Rent vouchers (for studio apartments only) exploded and Social Security supplemental benefits became higher ($450 a month) than regular benefits ($350 a month) so seniors could afford to rent out a one-bedroom apartment to avoid homelessness or the glorified closets known as studio apartments.

Let me teach you americans some things: 1. Force companies to employ people for longer and only allow them to fire under more rules and laws 2. Allow companies to cut hours, let the people stay, pay the difference by the government. In Germany we get around 80% for normal people and 100% of your income in special cases like single moms or people with special needs. All others maybe work halftime, like my dad does now, gets 50% from his work and 30% of his usual income from the government, no questions asked. The company doesn't lose valuable trained and skilled workers, my dad does the job alone, and if he is gone, the company needs 3 people just to keep up with his speed and precision. 3. increase pay (same goes for germany) 4. improve financial support and insurance.

He did mention Germany as an example of that. I suppose he could have given Germany's rise in unemployment (0.4% higher than before the pandemic as opposed to >10% higher in the US and two thirds of those 0.4% due to a slump in hiring) to show just how well that system works.

Basically OK, but you have to be very careful when comparing unemployment numbers in different countries because they are calculated in wildly different ways. E.g. here, in germany, people who are out of work but are taking part in a government funded (re)training programm are not considered unemployed - which can significantly skew the number compared to other countries

i am not too surprised considering what’s happening. On top of people who really lost their job, there are also a insane number of people who are working for essential businesses and taking the advantage of EDD right now. Not a lot of people is going to want to work if they get paid 2 times Or 3 times as much from Edd plus 600 a week than what they earn normally. Because of these people who are not going to work, lots of small local essential businesses can not open because they are short staffed. And many of these business might go out of business if they didn’t receive their PPP. This will create more job loss. This shows no matter what’s happening to our nation, rich or poor there will be those who are lazy and want to take advantage of the government’s good will.

If your off sick and you work full time, you get £98 a week, less than a days wages, scandal it is
