When a Republican is in charge it's hard to get your benefits, hard to understand how to apply for your benefits, and the people tend to be nasty if they talk to you at all. The Chicago Sun-Times complained that all of these jobs were subsistence wage jobs...all of them. By the 2000's, terminated ex-employees in Illinois, needed...TWO years... to find another job. As a result food stamps, energy assistance and welfare exploded in Illinois. Author Barbara Ehrenreich wrote two expose books about the job market nightmare all over the country. By the 2008 meltdown, Illinoisans needed THREE years to find a job. As a result, early (62 years old) social security benefit applications in Illinois exploded from 500 thousand yearly to one million annually. Rent vouchers (for studio apartments only) exploded and Social Security supplemental benefits became higher ($450 a month) than regular benefits ($350 a month) so seniors could afford to rent out a one-bedroom apartment to avoid homelessness or the glorified closets known as studio apartments.

Let me teach you americans some things: 1. Force companies to employ people for longer and only allow them to fire under more rules and laws 2. Allow companies to cut hours, let the people stay, pay the difference by the government. In Germany we get around 80% for normal people and 100% of your income in special cases like single moms or people with special needs. All others maybe work halftime, like my dad does now, gets 50% from his work and 30% of his usual income from the government, no questions asked. The company doesn't lose valuable trained and skilled workers, my dad does the job alone, and if he is gone, the company needs 3 people just to keep up with his speed and precision. 3. increase pay (same goes for germany) 4. improve financial support and insurance.

Not really, when the crisis is over they will wave the obligation of companies to keep there employees on payroll. Due to the fact that they need to shrink in size after the crisis, a good example is the airline industry. This means a quick and fast shock through the economy, so it can reset. Besides this crisis has not costs the gov a lot of money compared to other countries because of overcapacity of The intensive care. Which is the result of impopulairity if somebody even mentioned to close down a hospital. They would never get re elected if they did, because of that they had 34 beds per 100000 people in the population. The number of IC beds is in this crisis had never even reached 50% capacity they even took people from other countries.

Even non-essential businesses that reopened here have limited services and hours because they’ve lost workers who had to find other jobs after they were furloughed. In the UK we pay like 12% "National Insurance" of wages, cant opt out, if your out of work you get around £120 a week its a joke, if your under 25 you get £70 a week, I was unfortunate to have to sign on the dole for a month due to a job loss when I was 24, I had paid 12% of my wages everyday since I started working at 16, had a mortgage of £550 a month, and all they offered me was around £75 a week and made to jump thro hoops for it, also your employer pays around 13% of your wage for national insurance aswell. If your off sick and you work full time, you get £98 a week, less than a days wages, scandal it is

So comparing the US with other countries abroad...is comparing it to ONLY 3 countries in Europe??? I mean, first the EU is made of 27 countries, so shortening it to 3 is just ridiculous, given the differences that exist between all of them. France has a great system for example, why are you always talking about Nordic and Anglo-Saxon countries and so rarely about countries out of that cultural zone, even so close to them like Italy, France, Poland, etc. Then, the rest of the world is totally absent from this comparison. India? South Africa? Russia? China? Countries in South America?? The world is not only made of Nordic and Anglo-Saxon countries and cultures, get out of your bubble and start REALLY looking at the WHOLE WORLD.

i am not too surprised considering what’s happening. On top of people who really lost their job, there are also a insane number of people who are working for essential businesses and taking the advantage of EDD right now. Not a lot of people is going to want to work if they get paid 2 times Or 3 times as much from Edd plus 600 a week than what they earn normally. Because of these people who are not going to work, lots of small local essential businesses can not open because they are short staffed. And many of these business might go out of business if they didn’t receive their PPP. This will create more job loss. This shows no matter what’s happening to our nation, rich or poor there will be those who are lazy and want to take advantage of the government’s good will.

You should have explaimed how the German "Kurzarbeitergeld" works. The unemployment insurance pays 60 (if you have kids 67)% of your lost wage after taxes. E.g. if you have to reduce by 50% and normaly bring home 2000 you get 1600 (1000 from your employer +600 from the insurance). If its 100% you get 1200.

It takes time to build up a true democracy, free health care, free education, good infrastructure, good unemployment benefits, good retirement pensions, and so on. As seen from Norway it seems that the mountain of pressing structural problems in the USA is overwhelming. A key factor in achieving all these things is public trust in the government. If you trust that your money is spent well, you gladly pay your tax. Then it may actually become cheaper in many cases. And the total tax level is actually not so different when you combine all the different types of taxes you Americans pay, with what we pay here. But sadly the USA does not seem to have a culture of trust in the government. And your current president has not made that easier. We hope you will get through the next 20-30-40 very rough years in good shape on the other end.
