I do like the Idea for this design of a hybrid system. It gives the ease of not needing a charging system in the field and also the efficacy of an electric. I could see this design for use for long range truckers, logging, or farm work.
@BenjaminVestergaard2 ай бұрын
I can tell, even before watching more than 1 minute... You're aiming for a logging truck, not a general purpose long hauler. So cabin luxury isn't a priority. You're not naively trying to go all-electric, instead you're aiming for a modular hybrid architecture with a true right-to-repair mindset... even your first trucks can be updated to full battery or fuel cells, when the technology is mature enough for your purpose. That's a clever strategy, a pragmatic approach that takes advantage of what we've got right now.
@sarkaranish2 ай бұрын
Eventually they will get into long haulers, and I hope it's something a bit more luxurious than this haha, but this is a great REAL work truck. The fact that it took people so long to realize that electric motors make more sense than a transmission is crazy.
@BenjaminVestergaard2 ай бұрын
@@sarkaranish watched their European visit earlier today, I'm very certain that they won't be stuck in the same groove like many other North American manufacturers. Chase is determined to get the best out of existing technology. With focus on that rather than trying to build another monopoly, Edison will do good, as in really good. Now that I've learnt that even Scania is alright about sharing tech... I have no doubt that they have an opportunity to revolutionise the north American market. Then Elon can say he's got higher ambitions all he wants. European trucks has had more HP and been able to handle tighter streets than the US standard for years... if they partner up, they're not stealing Tesla tech anymore. They're just making it a nicer experience to be a trucker in NA. But I don't expect EdisonMotors to sell out, American regulations are quite different from European ones, but a fair partnership seems like a good idea... Tesla wouldn't stand a chance. Edit: It's the open mind and right to repair that will make them preferred in the end.
@sarkaranish2 ай бұрын
@@BenjaminVestergaard Only wish they didn't use Scania engines, there's no support in North America.
@BenjaminVestergaard2 ай бұрын
@@sarkaranish well, the video includes the distributor of Scania parts in Canada... But, of course, I can't say that I know the NA market in details... but Scania isn't no bigger a company than that they could be convinced to open more maintenance points if necessary. I live within 3km from the nearest Scania workshop here in Denmark, and we're really not a lot of people here in DK compared to north America. Edit: and since it seems Scania is willing to supply motors without the frame, and Edison aims to use off the shelf components, they can easily be both partners and competitors... I mean, neither side is determined to dominate the market on their own. But I'll agree if you say that CAT wasn't a bad choice either. Scania may just be willing to walk an extra mile to get a better reputation in North America.
@sarkaranish2 ай бұрын
@@BenjaminVestergaard That's pretty neat that in Europe you have a lot of Scania support, but that's not how it works for America. If they offer Scania engines that's cool, but they should really also offer other engines as well.

Love the argument about keeping it simple with off the shelf parts. I built my electric Toyota Hilux the same way with that same exact mentality in mind. I cannot stand how EV companies and vehicle companies in general are selling heavily over-engineered vehicles that can't be worked on or serviced. The Hilux I built was done as simple as possible knowing I can go to any junkyard to find stuff. And especially the EV parts. And if anything breaks on the truck I can fix it easily. My truck Is a pure EV now but I'm inspired now to throw a little Onan twin diesel in there to keep the pack charged for the longer hauls. Thanks for doing this guys!

Using common, tested and improved upon parts over decades, for most stuff is perfect for getting useful tools like your semi off the ground and fast to adopt for clients that can benefit from these - ALL THE BEST!! Right there with you with the rants, started going off with: Including simpler more reliable approaches - don't want to or can't fit a bunch of screws around a housing - sure, makes it easier to maintain, by making it slide into a wedge or slits and fasten with one or two screws instead of making everything hook into place with the same amount of weak plastic hooks that brake and are a hassle/strain on parts to remove. Your panel of electronics was also refreshing - sometimes have to take the hole machine apart to maintain a simple inexpensive part..
@RolandKontson2 ай бұрын
Though I can also understand not wanting to be dependent on someone else's solution for something you depend on (especially if it's simple enough) and possibly getting tied into a price or licenses - shouldn't be that fragile to such a change. In software it's best to do the simple and mission critical stuff yourself - keep it simple - not forgetting the "soft" in software.

ohhh Chase, super well done. Your goals would be different from Telsa Motors. Telsa want to make BEV and not a PHEV. You are doing things correctly, things dont just exist, they exist becuase millions of people of failed along the way, whch is why we have the trucks we have today. Edison is doing it correctly, build the network, build support, build the supply chains, build out training, etc Selling one truck is not a probem, servicing 1,000,000 trucks is a problem. As you inferred with the Scania video, next day parts in Northa America, is not by mistake, truck downtime is lost revenue. BTW you may want to set up Edison distribution next to Scania distribution centers as they have already figured out the logistics, labour and warehouse costs. No need to re-invent that whell. Another note: "prototypes are easy, production is hard" When you plan to build 50,000 tractors a year, the prototype is not the problem, “the machine to make the machine” is now the problem. No doubt your truck might not need all the ammenities, however trucks operate in all conditions. FYI; Telsa semi has been delayed in part by the lack of battery supply. [1] Once again, super well done you guys. “Bring innovation and manucaturing back to North America" Cheers Ref: [1]insideevs.com/news/672016/tesla-semi-volume-production-wil-not-start-until-late-2024/ Tesla doesn't expect to start higher-volume production of the Semi Class 8 electric semi-truck before late 2024, CEO Elon Musk said yesterday citing battery supply constraints. Speaking at an energy conference in Austin, Texas, Musk did not provide details on what higher-volume production means for the Semi, the Wall Street Journal reported. However, Musk previously said the Tesla Semi would reach an annual production of 50,000 units starting in 2024. Speaking on the Q3 2022 earnings call in October 2022, the billionaire said it would take about a year to ramp up Semi production. About a year from October 2022 would indicate late 2023-early 2024 as the start of the production ramp. "So, we're tentatively aiming for 50,000 units in 2024 for Tesla Semi in North America. And obviously, we'll expand beyond North America," Musk said.
