If you were doing it again, would you have started with just potatoes? I am wondering because people lose their desire to ever eat potatoes again and I am wondering if it is worth it to keep actually liking potatoes or if that didn't matter?

@Dolly Madeson You can check out my nonprofit's website, reapgoodness.org. It tells what we are about related to veganic food forestry while healing the Earth from the devastating effects of grazing animals and industrial animal agriculture. I have a heart defect from birth, inherited a poor cardiovascular system altogether, and have from birth compromised lungs. I started to research nutrition in 1970, the year my Dad died young of heart disease. He was a butcher in our family owned grocery store. I slowly went vegan after reading studies from the National Institutes of Health. I'm now 72 and in great health...all my health checkup numbers are good. So far I've now lived 20 years longer than my dad did. I work 10-12 hours a day on my nonprofit and have the energy level of a 30 year-old.

Going vegan probably saved my life! I was put on cholesterol medication when I was 10 because I was a heart attack waiting the happen. I was a bit over weight at the time but my big issue was that it was hereditary. Doctors said I'd always have to watch what I ate and I'd probably always be on the medication. Ate a lot of beans and chicken and healthier foods that first year thanks to my mom, but with no difference. Went vegetarian and ate super healthy, not even enough of a change to lower my medication. Went vegan at 16 and completely went off the meds! Funny thing is, when I went vegan it wasn't even my life I was trying to save 😁

Today is my last day of the POTATO HEAD FAMINE. I have lost a total of 28lbs. That includes my pre run of 5 days (wanted to see if I loved potatoes like I thought I did.) So in 3 weeks I will have lost 30lbs! I read the "Presto", "Eat to Live" , "Idiot's Guide Plant Based Nutrition". All great books! Thanks to you two, I'm now Vegan/Nutritarian (DAMN IT). I used to make fun of these people. I have been a chef for over 27 years and am relearning things (Very humbling). Thank you guys for being fat and having the courage to say I'm done with this. And then have the strength to put it out there for every Ahole to watch. It inspired me to say "I can do it too". The potatoes were really necessary for me to kick ALL of my bad habits and addictions with food.

Yup!! It is sooo very simple once you see a few things. For instance once y'all stop eating just fast foods, processed (boxed, bagged) foods, and then all the animal/dairy/eggs foods, you are there. Now chips and coke are vegan but NO YOU DO NOT WANT TO EAT THESE - why? No nutritional value. I went WFPB/Vegan last year. - lost the 30-40 lbs that I carried around dangerously for many years, my hubbs Harry did the same, and we are thin and fit, and healthy. Thank you for this video, it will help soooo many people with the struggle of being fit and healthy, and to be back to their perfect weight (we are all different). You guys are awesome!!! Such an inspiration! You are not only saving your own health, you are a shining example for the rest of us as you show us in real time how to take control of your health. I have been trying to recover from a life of chronic food poisoning for over twenty-five years, oscillating between sorta healthy and downright terrible eating for far too long. After two artificial hips and the steady decline of most of the rest of my joints, along with chronic digestive issues, kidney stones, depression, angina, and a slew of other symptoms related to bad food, not enough exercise, smoking, drinking, stressing and a severe lack of sleep, I finally started to get serious about cutting the poison out of my life. It’s been a roller coaster ride of different approaches and philosophies, from high fat to low fat, keto to starch-based, “healthy” meats and fats to vegan. I think I’m finally finding my way as I settle into a lifestyle of wholefood, plant-based eating and intermittent fasting. I’m currently trying to eat only whole food, plant-based within a 4-8 hour window each day, with an occasional longer fast at least once a month (24-36 hours). I hope to work up to a 48 hour fast once a month, but feel really good with what I’m doing now. Some of my health issues can not be cured with diet (hips are fake and can’t grow back cartilage in my other degenerating joints), but giving up animal products and controlling when I eat has significantly improved everything else which buffers the impact of those issues I can’t reverse. I’ve lost nearly 40 pounds and I’ve regained hope as I reclaim my dreams of watching my kids graduate from college, holding my future grandchildren, and maybe even holding my great grandchildren someday. I’m in my mid fifties and my kids won’t graduate from high school for a few more years, but I now dare to dream it may be possible! A big part of what keeps me going is watching brave and committed people like yourselves turn your lives around and take the reigns of your health. Thank you so much for sharing your journey and inspiring many like myself to ho’omau, persevere, as we say in Hawai’i. Mahalo me ka ‘oia’i’o, Thank you with sincerity, Hanaloa

Just wanted to share, for any folks new to the community, that the best way to differentiate wfpb/vegan is wfpb is a diet (certainly within the vegan community), and vegan is not a diet, but a lifestyle rejecting use of all animal products, for the benefit of animals, the environment, and personal health. I'm glad you talked about the distinction between vegan, and plant based/whole food. I certainly don't want to eat animals, or animal products, but many vegan eaters can eat unhealthy, processed foods. Choosing whole foods, takes it one step further, to a healthy life style. I am a little older, and have struggled with food and fat my whole life. Now, no more struggle. I eat my delicious whole foods till I'm comfortably full, and eat again when I know I'm hungry. I didn't learn how to do that till I adopted this plan, and got completely off the processed foods. I like all these options, but resonate most clearly with Dr. McDougall's simple way of explaining it, especially his Maximum Weight Loss Plan. I have lost approximately 80 lbs, and although it's slowed a bit, The MWLP makes it clear how to eat for success, so onward. You're very inspiring, and I'm so glad you are sharing your adventure, so we know we're not alone out here. Thanks for posting.

It's always interesting where and how people got their start; who inspired them, etc. Like you, I read all the same info, watched people who did the potato diet for 1 year. Like you, I read Fuhrman, Dr. McDougall, Colin T. Campbell, Dr. Esselstyn, and others. I agree WFPB is the way to go and easier than people may think. I ended up following McDougall, which the biggest difference was eating healthy starches. I tried the Fuhrman plan; I found McDougall's plan made me feel more satiated. The important thing is that there is something out there for everyone! I can't get hubby to join me, he still wants MEAT and cheese and loves his milk. I feel bad because I want him to eat healthy. I admire that the two of you are doing this together. I'm so jealous!

Thank you very much for commenting! 😀 Two of our favorite KZbinrs follow McDougall and have seen great success. We just want people to get healthy. 😀 One aspect I actually like about the Fuhrman plan is that it isn't an all or nothing plan. The 6-week plan is strict but the 90/10 plan is essentially a whole-food omnivore diet. Maybe your husband could go for something like that. 😀 -Brian

I have hit a plateau and I cannot get my weight to budge no matter what I do now. I even gained a little weight skipping breakfast not eating that much. I cannot lose anymore weight no matter what I do. I may start cutting out the oil. I can't even get away with eating a little vegan carrot and cranberry salad without gaining weight. It did have a little olive oil dressing in it. I have to get this last 30 lbs.off. I may just try this and do an intuitive diet as far as counting calories like you guys and cut out oil. Thank you very much! 😀 Here is a typical conversation about our weight loss with a random person... Me: Yeah, we followed a whole food plant-based diet and cut out all oil and sugar. Them: Oh what does that mean? Me: Well, it's essentially a vegan diet (their eyes glaze over here) and we only eat whole plant foods. Them: Oh. 😂😂😂😂 I have had that conversation more times than I can count. 😀 -Brian

We haved moved to WFPB by just eating through what we had in the freezer and pantry and just stopped buying animal products. It was gradual and as we had less meat we were eating more plants. My husband who SWORE he would never give up meat, has done so and even admits that he doesn't miss it at all. The last frontier with him is yogurt and cheese. My husband still loves cheese but now he eats FAR less than he used to. Like you said I've had to pick my battles. Eventually we'll move away from dairy I'm certain of it.

Thank you for spreading the word about not having to be a diet robot! I am a WFPB person myself and I just say I eat plants and grains, shocked faces😂 where do you get all the great T-shirts?

You are both adorable. I am very proud of your transformation. So great to see a young couple changing their lives and the planet. I've been mostly WFPB (with some brief forays into vegan junk food-can't advise this, especially if one is easily triggered) for two years. After initial weight loss, have been easily maintaining proper BMI on this way of eating. I agree-it is freeing to not count calories! Love all your videos and recipes! Way to go-please keep 'em coming!

They've nearly lost a full 'me'!!! (at my starting weight when I made the switch to WFPB anyway!) That's ridiculously impressive *and* scary at the same time XD Says great things about them, says worrying things about me :P hehe

I lost 60 lbs doing keto about 6 yrs ago..have kept it off... but now I am vegan and cant even do vegan keto because of high fat..I have heart disease. But you are right..It melted off that way..Just for my health I cant take that route this time.
@jjwilwil48005 жыл бұрын
@Liz P. Is there any way to do a plant based lower fat version?
@John-bg3mm5 жыл бұрын
@@jjwilwil4800 Liz is right that sugars are highly likely the cause of heart disease. Specifically refined sugars and refined carbs. There has been science done suggesting this. I think Keto is kind of a backlash to the highly sugared commercial foods that most of the population has been living on and unknowingly abusing their bodies by consuming. In my opinion and estimation, we would be fine on a whole foods diet and not need such extremes as keto if such damage weren't done. But in their estimation, keto is what the body is designed to do. I just hope they eat their green veggies too and don't just eat 100% protein and fat. While there may be something to keto, I personally prefer fruit and other natural whole food carbohydrates in my diet. I don't understand the philosophy of no oil. Omega 3 fatty acids seem to have a regenerative effect on the body. I guess they can be found in seeds though without refining them into oil.

I have a genetic form of heart disease called FH and high lp(a) and was diagnosed 14 yrs ago. So being vegan definitely didnt cause it. I actually went vegan 3 yrs ago to combat it and my numbers have improved. Research Dr caldwell esselstyn..he explains it very well that too much fat isnt good for hrt disease..sugar is also a cause I agree.
@NLR7595 жыл бұрын
@Liz P. Please stop spreading mistruths. Dr. Esselstyn has scientifically proven that a whole food plant based, low fat diet REVERSES heart disease. Many people also reverse heart disease, high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, and other chronic lifestyle diseases, following WFPB diet programs designed by Dr. McDougall, Mastering Diabetes, or Dr. Barnard. You are the one who needs to do some reading.

That was awesome that you guys did this for yourselves ♥️ I strongly believe in intuitive/mindful eating and living by a primarily plant fruit based diet and having meats in smaller portions. This was VERY motivational 😊♥️

I'm so excited to see this... The before pics still shock me (have seen some on your Instagram); you guys have literally "spiced up my life" with Brian's spice mix (from the baked tofu recipe) and I'll never go back to bland again! I also have a tofu press now, I didn't even know they make them and it's like a fun tofu torture device, ha, ha... Love you both, rock on :)

I am trying to lose weight on a vegetarian diet (mostly vegan and fairly wfpb) and it's so inspiring to see others who have been and still are successful at it! Sometimes I feel like my scale hates me, but it's a hurdle I'll make it over in time. Where I live I pretty much have to cook everything I eat - Do you two ever get sick of cooking everything and just want to relax with a meal out? How do you manage that sort of thing?

I just found your weightloss journey videos today and immediately subscribed to your channel. 😊 Thank you both for the inspiration. I just have one question. Did you guys become more active after the change in food style or are you basically keeping to the same schedule as you did before the transformation and are relying solely on food restrictions?
@courag15 жыл бұрын
Like you, I am Christian, and I didn't ever do the straight potatoes thing you both did. We've each lost 50 lbs. One of the things I also found helpful is what the Bible says to eat in the beginning. Whereas I probably am okay where I am, I am heavier than my marriage weight but I am in the normal BMi, my husband still need to lose weight and is losing now slowly. My weight just pings around about 3 lbs. I have no desire to go back to the old eating habits. My husband eats fish upon occasion. In the meanwhile it is an excellent diet to stop and reverse or prevent cancer and heart conditions and blood pressure and loads of other things. As my mother and sister died of breast cancer and my dad and maternal grandmother died of Alzheimer's, the diet is the best preventative for Alzheimer's too. Definitely the Creator knew why He wanted us to eat this way. And at Christmas time I reflect on the wonder of the incarnation and that even though Jesus could have been born in a palace, He was born in the presence of the animals. I do not believe He ever ate animals as they breathe air with lungs, not like fish. He may have eaten fish. But none of the animals which were used for sin offerings were anything but vegans, it is likely He was vegan. The Essenes, which John the Baptist was, were vegans. Some believe the translation of "fish" could also mean fish grass which was more of a spread for bread. I am not sure, but find it interesting. I've also seen the wisdom of mankind's use of the land, could feed all the people with us all eating the plants directly and not eat the animals or drink cows' milk. The manure in the Central Valley of California, in some areas, are actually getting into the vegetables and causing salmonella. I think it is a wise way to eat for health and as so many are over weight, particularly children, it is sad to see. I was an overweight kid too. I was the youngest, but my mother insisted I eat as much as the older two which was not fair and have some psychological problems from this. When I remember from what I was fed, my severe problems with dairy, the constant constipation, I was so bound up, it gave me hyperhidrosis from the internal stress. I was drenched all the time, and tormented for the sweating and overweight and it drove me to stuttering. I attempted suicide as a child from the torture and ridicule I endured both at home and at school. My mother's solution was daily enemas for me. I did not play outside often because I would be confined to the bathroom for up to 2+ hours taking enemas, often not even with warm water. I look back and though I love my mother, I also hate what she did to me. As a Christian, I have to forgive, she was treated much the same way as a child. Counting calories does not work for me and I feel like God gave me this diet to help me learn to eat normally, having been force fed as it was, I did not learn when I was full as I had no choice. It drove me also to bulimia, which I have not had in years but sometimes my appetite is not in control though 99% of the time it is now. And it is such freedom. And my digestive tract works normally, considering the abuse of laxatives and enemas, did not end up in lifelong trouble. I do have a son with IBS but not because of what I did to him. He got some illnesses from being a fire fighter/paramedic in the Navy which led to it. It is now under control. All of our kids weight is normal, the oldest one is a little heavier as he is into body building but none are obese. I am thankful for your channel very much. I never went past 80 lbs. overweight, but the psychological part still bothers me though my diet is mostly under my control now. There is help for everyone in Jesus, I do believe. God bless and Merry Christmas.

I eat pretty healthy and am relatively active, but calories were my biggest issue! I've been obsessively counting calories for a couple months, which is tiring but so important to me right now. My metabolism has been so messed up for years, and I have portion control issues so it's been huge. On days I want to eat everything in sight I limit myself to 1400 calories and try to fill up on potatoes. On days I'd normally forget about food and only eat a couple hundred calories, the tracker reminds me to eat and I get in at least 1200. It's actually really helped my metabolism, along with the weight loss from eating in a deficit. Once I get to a better weight I'll probably stop counting calories but just track a few normal days in a row every once in a while to make sure I'm not eating a surplus. The most frustrating thing for me though is that I try to eat a couple hundred calories over my maintenance one day a week to keep my metabolism going, but unless I'm eating a lot of foods cooked in a generous amount of olive oil I can't even come close!
