Shortest wait for Howlin Ray's is in the morning. Doors open at 11am, but if you get there by 9am you should be...10th in line, lol. The fantastic staff at Howlin Ray's also add to the experience. Walked away many a times with an extra piece of chicken or even an extra sandwich.

If any hot chicken spot will branch out nationwide, it will be one that originated in Nashville not LA, like Hattie B's or Princes. Maybe Howlin Ray's since the owner came and learned from the original restaurants in Nashville, then took it to LA.

This is what I wrote tonight on a different YT video on Howlin Ray’s that was a few years old: This was filmed several years ago. After seeing it (and having loved Chef Johnny on Cutthroat Kitchen), the family and I went to Howlin Ray’s in August 2019. First, the line was STILL 2+ hours long. I’m sure the scarcity they created keeps the buzz and interest alive (people want to be a part of something popular/trendy or that feels exclusive), but all I could think of in line is how much money they are turning away every day. The place inside is tiny. One register. Basically no place to sit. There are a ton of empty spaces in this run-down strip mall. If they just expanded to one or two additional spaces, they could serve hundreds more people each day. But I’m not a restaurant owner, so what do I know? I assume he’s thought of this and has a reason for keeping things as they are. Ok, the food. It was very good, but I can’t imagine waiting even 25% of the usual wait time more than once for this (or almost any food). You literally will wait 2-3 hours for a chicken sandwich or wings (very good ones, but it can only be so good). Chalk it up to an experience you do once. (Now maybe things are different mid week, or now with coronavirus.) Back to the food. It is unbelievably spicy. You can tell that it’s the spiciest, most painful food (the KZbinr) had ever had. It’s not fun or enjoyable (for me at least); just painful and appetite/day ruining. To be clear, I am not someone who eats real spicy hot sauce or peppers. I use regular Mexican hot sauce , but not crazy specialty stuff. My sons like stuff much spicier than me. They ordered the “Hot” level. Halfway through the sandwich, their lips were totally swollen, they were sweating like they were in a rain storm, and they ended up literally sucking on things of blue ice from the cooler in our car. I think for most people, even the level Hot will be quite unpleasant. I cannot even imagine anyone enjoying X-tra Hot, much less Howlin, and definitely not the off-the-menu Howlin+ If they are smart, they require customers to sign a liability waiver before allowing anyone to order Howlin or Howlin+. I’m sure there are people who not only can eat those upper level ones, but at least somewhat enjoy them. God bless you, and I tip my hat. But beware, this is nothing like wings n things or any place like that (whatever is the absolute spiciest wing at Wings n Things is probably equal to a medium here). Good luck!!

Dave’s hot chicken started using frozen chicken shipped from a warehouse. It’s no longer marinated at the restaurant. It has completely changed the flavor and quality of the chicken it’s bland and tasteless The pieces are smaller And I feel overall it’s going to destroy the franchise because it’s basically a bait and switch by corporate. They got people loving and enjoying, which was truly a masterpiece of a recipe and delicious! Now it’s like eating prepackaged, frozen chicken tenders, which can be bought at Costco, and then seasoned with hot spice, however I’m not comparing it to that but the pricing and the quality is no longer worth going in and spending the money for the product the consumers receiving at Dave’s hot chicken. It literally went from a 10 to 3 on the flavor and quality of the finished product being served to the consumer now.

Dave's extra hot is truly not that hot. I am not talking anything about how well you can take heat. It simply is not that hot. Have not tried the Reaper, but if it is not at least 3-4x the Scoville, I can't imagine why you would need to sign a waiver. Howlin Rays is definitely hotter. I have had their 2nd spiciest chicken, and (while hot) it was manageable. Minor sweats, maybe some light headedness as the heat builds. Have to still try their hottest option. I do agree both places make good chicken, with Rays being the better of the two.

This has always been my stance. Honestly I think a lot of people are just followers who don't like to think for themselves lol. I've had many great meals in my life, some more memorable than others, and I am definitely a "foodie". I can't imagine waiting 2-3 hours for a table, especially not just to eat fried chicken. Yes I'm sure it's good, but I absolutely do not believe it is THAT much better lol. Like if I was with a group of people trying to get some food and they insisted we HAD to wait for 2 hours to go to a specific restaurant, I would think they're dumb and don't realize how much good food is out there. People love to hype things up though.

@@RockstarEater for a place called bangin buns, the buns they use really are fantastic. The chicken itself probably isn't quite as good as Dave's or Howlin, but is the 3rd best I've had. They used to only have cans of soda and were warm every time I got one which bothered me, but they finally got a soda machine so thats an improvement and the last thing I'd say for the environment is its definitely geared towards a younger crowd. They blast loud rap, and Im in my mid 20s and I feel old when I go there. But overall worth checking out at least once. The bangin fries are also pretty good if you're into loaded fries.

Nothin is better than Howlin Ray’s I get mad and disappointed whenever I try other places because there’s no comparison at all!

Yes. Howlin Rays is very good. I have yet to find a better Nashville Hot Chicken in LA! Thanks for the feedback.

Nice job! I appreciate the clear word enunciation but the proper name is "Howlin' Ray's" and not "Howling Ray's".
