HuffPost Discredits Its Own Arguments for Islam

Huffington Post tried to defend Islam, but discredited its own arguments instead. Muslims are peaceful in much of the world, but you're better off being honest instead of saying Islam is the religion of peace or having Muslim feminists argue for you when responding to Islamophobia. The Quran isn't totally peaceful, as evidenced by its followers. HuffPost uses arguments on the left that are just as bad as those on the right. They and Prager U are just two sides of the same coin.

My anecdotal evidence would be my experience as a young man when a group went to a mosque and was told we could not even enter into the building if the women did not cover their heads and the men cover their shoulders if they had worn tank tops. The turning away of people from a house of worship according to their dress, even when no services are going on, seems to indicate the severity that that "one little passage " is taken.

Inflicting pain for no good reason isn't merciful, it's cruel. Inflicting infinite pain for no good reason is infinite cruelty. In 1536 William Tyndale was burned at the stake in England for translating the Bible into English, where anyone (who could read, which was a small minority) could then read it. Why burned at the stake? Because now the average Joe could read and interpret the Bible without need of clergy. And since then, everyone gets to take it out of context. That's easy to do since it was cobbled together in an editors' meeting in 325, nearly 300 years after the death of the historical Jesus. The Koran is no better. There is no clarity in any of the documents: they are not like IKEA instructions, which the majority of people can use to assemble some pice of furniture. That's clarity of writing (or pictographs, more). Give any of these books to a thousand different people and there will be more than a thousand interpretations.

The 5th grade class I took care of in 10th grade had a brother and sister from a strict muslim household. The girl was actually repeating the year and her parents asked the school to put the siblings in the same class. Our school does an overnight trip at the beginning of 5th grade. The parents of these two decided to let the brother go but not the sister who hadn't gone the year before either. The teacher had to convinced them to let her come. This inequality continued throughout the year. So no, I don't believe Muslim values are inherently equalist.
@meredithwilliams4671
@meredithwilliams4671 5 жыл бұрын
They are not equalist at all. Muslim men can marry four wives and can marry chaste Christian or Jewish women. Muslim women are limited to just one Muslim husband. Men's clothing modesty standards are only from navel to knee. Women's are from head to toe. And that's just the religion itself. In practice, Muslim men are allowed to run wild and have sex before getting married. Women have to stay virgin. Oh, and they think Western women are nothing but whores.

I m from a muslim country, and one of the main ironies over here is that people will tell you that islam is a religion of peace, and at the same they will tell that beating people who eats outdoor during the month of fasting (ramadan) is the right thing to do. Also most of muslims can't understand most of what the quran say because it's written in an old arabic language that is hard to be understood (so even they tell you something about it, it's probably false). And finally, in western countries women who wear hijab say they do so beacause they want to "express themselves" but in muslim countries, you'll find that most of them do it because their brothers/husband push them to, or their hair look bad or to protect themselves from sexual harassement because the levels of sexual frustration here are much higher because of the imposed purity.

Ex-Muslim Arab here. I attest that this is true. The Quran is very ambigious at times that its apologists have various and different interpretations of it. There's no objective meaning to it and no one understands it. So what do people do? They listen to the so-called experts, the Sheikhs and the fiqh scholars, and regurgitate their interpretations, which most of the time are outright barbaric.

Islam has no tradition of open inquiry and relies on Imans to tell of the scriptures. The Koran is especially difficult for two reasons. First, it is written in archaic Arabic, second, it is generally considered largely incomprehensible even to those who are studied the the ancient language. Most Muslims do not concern themselves with these idiosyncrasies but enthusiasts try their best to get it exactly right. That has been the case since the very day the prophet died and civil war began that is going on to this very day.

And that is why it is important for us to have difficult conversations about difficult topics. It is important for those in the discussion to recognize their personal viewpoint (unwavering belief/thought), then here the unwavering belief/thought of the other person in the discussion, and then these two or more angles must come together and be willing to restrict their own belief (where they feel it still doesn't fully contradict their personal view) to the point where compromise can be made

Fun fact: You'll traditionally see a lot of positive press talking about foreign allies who are "moderate muslims" (Obama liked this term a lot, if I recall), but its important to understand that "Moderate" is a relative concept in this context. Given that a majority of muslims will say that homosexuality should be banned (with about a third saying that gays should be executed), a "Moderate" muslim would still, by western standards, fall under the catagory of a "religious fundamentalist" in the same way certain christian sects do. The guy who made the HuffPo video would be part of a tiny minority of "Liberal Muslims".

Just want to add after finishing the video: I understand the call to not make generalizations about muslims out of a desire for logical nuance, but in order to process the same data in a POLITICAL context, generalization is not just useful, but 100% required. To wit, the idea of whether large numbers of muslim refugees and immigrants should be permitted to enter western countries. The importance of getting a generalized feel for the culture and dispositions of a population that wants to join your body of citizenship cannot be overstated, and in practical terms, a 30-50% rate of people with values contrary to liberal democracy (with 10% or even 5% willing to act on those beliefs violently) is unacceptable.

I hate the argument that because these countries have had female leaders and the US hasn't, they're somehow pillars of gender equality and can't be criticized. There's so much more going on than that! What percentage of legeslature and other government bodies are women? What about in the private sector, how many company leaders are women? Is there high quality medical support for women? Can girls go to school with the expectation of safety, and are they taught and treated the same as their male counterparts? What laws are in place to protect women and are they enforced? Saying "they have a female prime minister so there's no sexism in that country" is the same bullshit argument of "the US had a black president so there's no racism in America." Both obviously ignore the bigger picture.

About the hijab being "a choice" always felt like a lie for me growing up. Bc i grew up with ppl saying its okay to not wear the hijab but once u reach a certain age (for me it was 13) they expect u to already wear it and when u don't the shame i got from not only my peers and family but also society and even teachers were just making me feel more uncomfortable about wearing the hijab. For example: I failed my maths class once and my teacher called me and asked me basic questions like do i frel motivated to study and stuff but then she asked "do u not wear the hijab?" at the time, i said "i dont feel ready to wear it but my parents force me to" and she just looked at me up and down seemingly judging me. The next day she even told all the girls in my ckass to wear the hijab and "dont loose ur crown" and she looked at me again like she was referring to me. Another one was my parents, they never were that religious but once i started going through puberty they basically forced me to wear the hijab. One day when i was 15 we were about to go out eating and i didny put on my hijab. My dad stopped what he was doing and told me to wear it. I told him time and time again that i dont feek ready to wear tge hijab but then he said "this isnt about whether ur ready or not, this is about u being a muslim girl." and it didnt really surprise me bc i was also taught that if a daughter does not wear her hijab once she is old enough (maybe untik she died i dint quite remember) then her father has failed and will go to hell. I thankfully found friend that are muslims and understand my emotions and treat me normally without shaming but trust me when i say they are VERY rare.

Sardonicus show me where Christianity promotes its followers to violence. I’ll wait. You’ll probably come back using the Hebrew Scriptures while Christians are not bound by mosaic law at all. And for the record Mosaic law was made to go with the social structure of its day. Christianity not once makes any calls for violence. Obviously violent acts have been done in the name of Christians but that has not been widespread for a long time and never can any violence be condoned by Christian beliefs taken from the Bible.
@milomilo55
@milomilo55 6 жыл бұрын
Gio Valladares You realize that this "Christians only follow the NT" and the OT has nothing to do with Christianity....though we still believe in the same god, Adam and Eve, talking snakes, the flood, Lot's wife turning into a pillar of salt and everything else in the OT that doesn't make us look bad, is relatively new cope-out that wasn't being used by the parents and grandparents of current christians, right? The primary differences between the violence associated with both religions is the timing of the violent periods. Most of the violence that occurred in the name of Christianity occurred a few hundred years ago, though Christian based violence is currently happening in some countries, e.g. Central African Republic, Nigeria, Sierra Leone etc., while Islamic violence tends to be more current in general.

I love when Muslims mention peace and Islam in one sentence. The thing is that many Muslims tend to understand the word 'peaceful' slightly different than the Westerners. When you ask a Muslim "Is Islam peaceful?" Everyone says YES. When you ask a Muslim "Can suicide-bombings and other forms of violence against civilian targets be justified to defend Islam against its enemies?", you'll be suprised how often peaceful Muslims answer YES to this question, too. In 2013 Pew Research carried our a survey and asked this question to Muslims in 11 countries. The percentage of those who answered YES (violence is often justified, sometimes justified and rarely justified) is as follows: Pakistan - YES - 7% Indonesia - YES - 18% Nigeria - YES - 15% Jordan - YES - 44% Tunisia - YES -18% Turkey - YES - 33% Senegal - YES - 32% Egypt - YES - 59% Malaysia - YES - 39% Lebanon - YES- 58% Palestine - YES - 74% When you multiply these percentages by the number of Muslim population in these countries you will get around 170 mln Muslims who believe that in certain situations violence against civilian targets is justified. It's as far from the peace as it can be according to Western standards. 170 mln people in only 11 countries is something that at least should cause concerns about the concept of peaceful Islam.
@TC-by3il
@TC-by3il 6 жыл бұрын
The only caveat to that is the framing of the question. Look at the this way, do a large part of the citizens of western europe or the US not support the fight against terror, and the attacks and bombings on targets that will ultimately lead to civilian casualties?
@slawero
@slawero 6 жыл бұрын
TheEsotericZebra Of course there are other factors. Also, when you want to generalize based on this data you can say that Islam teaches peace because the majority of Muslims answered 'No' to this question. My point though is that a large portion of Muslim population justifies violence in the religious context. The number I gave and the idea of Islam being a religion of peace causes a cognitive dissonance in me.

Aathan Raan, you're incorrect. There's night-and-day difference between Islam in the Balkan peninsula and the ISIS version of Islam. In Albania and Bulgaria Islam is only superficially different from Christianity, and most of the "believers" don't actually practice either religion. There have been ZERO attempts to legislate in Bulgaria any religious doctrine on either side. The secularism is absolute, and 99% of the population follows it. Even as majority-muslim country, Albania isn't much different. On the other hand Islam for ISIS is more of a political ideology and less of a religion. If you want to get what Islam is in these parts of the world, remember what was the last aggressive homophobic xenophobic antisemitic ideology that rose in a war-torn region of the world, hit by severe economic recession and sanctioned by every neighbor. Yes, it's nazism. Yes, I'm saying ISIS are the equivalent of nazis, and Islam for them is the equivalent of nazism. No, the biggest problem I find was the Harry Potter argument. Harry Potter is taken as fiction by the writer, publisher, and sellers. The Quran was written as fact from their god and followed as fact from their god. The only better description of the apples and oranges comparison would actually be an apple and an orange. The Quran is stated as fact, as the divine word of god, and it says to kill all infidels wherever you find them. You either agree with the text and take everything, or argue that your god got everything right except that one line.

chrisl0081234 by my logic, if the work of St Thomas Aquinas is taken as fact from the word of God, it cannot be up for debate. I'm saying, and said, they are comparing two unlike things. Harry Potter, meant only as entertainment, and the Quran, the holy word of God, written as and to be taken as, the ultimate factual and unquestionable word of God If your God is up to interpretation because you don't like it when he said to 'kill every infidel you find, wherever you find them'(paraphrase) then your God is up to interpretation. If he is up to interpretation, why belief the book. If that holy book of theirs contains the all-knowing word of God, one cannot trick people by leaving out the murderous bits and stay intellectually honest.
@riverstyxarmory9782
@riverstyxarmory9782 6 жыл бұрын
chrisl0081234 *theology* is the study of religion or beliefs. *Theism* is believing those things. Unfortunately, or probably fortunately, no theist belief stands up to logical or scientific scrutiny. The Quran is followed as the word of an omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent god. If your omniscient god saying 'kill infidels wherever you find them' is wrong, then the god is wrong. If the god is wrong, then he isn't all-knowing. Then he isn't god. The Quran cannot be critically viewed and come out clean, or *be compared to a work intended as fiction as justification for its evils.*
@riverstyxarmory9782
@riverstyxarmory9782 6 жыл бұрын
chrisl0081234 you seem to have missed the point entirely. If the works of the Quran are SUBJECTIVE then the words of god are not absolute. But the thesis belief, that the profit Mohammed was takes by God to document his OBJECTIVE will, then the words cannot be open for debate of study, only belief or disbelief.
@riverstyxarmory9782
@riverstyxarmory9782 6 жыл бұрын
chrisl0081234 so if Quran isn't the word of God, just the word of Muhammad, the book is effectively worthless as Devine text because everything is subjective. But if it was written by God through Muhammad, and can be treated objectively, intellectual honestly cannot be granted to someone who brushes aside the ugly bits because they don't like them. Nothing about this is complicated. If the Quran is being compared directly to a work of fiction, the Quran should be treated as fiction. If it is treated as fact, everything should be taken as fact.

I don't car about islam, many people who don’t bother to take the time to learn about Islam, also don't give a shit about islam. We have problem with the way people are treated in places of the world where islam is dominant as a religion, and the way it's practiced is highly interfering the way governments set their laws, and freedoms of people in general. If you compere any predominantly Christian country that is secular, and all of them are, and any predominantly muslim country, and many of them are not secular, where do you think people have more freedom and laws that are not discriminatory or life threatening. www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1317342/Muslim-woman-sacked-REFUSING-wear-headscarf.html www.ibtimes.co.in/watch-woman-beaten-not-wearing-hijab-properly-767253 freethoughtnation.com/for-millions-of-women-the-islamic-veil-is-not-a-choice/ www.rt.com/news/408129-father-beaten-daughter-hijab/ www.inquisitr.com/4872532/young-woman-wearing-hijab-improperly-gets-viciously-beaten-by-irans-morality-police/ www.independent.co.uk/voices/saudi-woman-no-hijab-beheading-killing-social-media-isis-womens-rights-human-rights-council-uk-a7452636.html www.advocate.com/world/2016/5/27/12-countries-will-kill-you-being-lgbt www.worldatlas.com/articles/most-oppressive-countries-towards-homosexuality.html

chrisl0081234 “don’t see violence in Malaysia or Indonesia”, tell that to the homosexual people being lashed in public! Tell that to the victims of terrorist attacks! The “Indonesia is the largest Muslim population and they are democratic and respect human rights” is a myth! Tragically, modern political Islam is INCREASING in the world. Even the “democratic” and “peaceful” Islamic majority countries are changing....not for the better! I strongly believe that we need to stop lying about Islam. That’s NOT ‘islamophobic’! We should support and defend the persecuted, oppressed voices which are calling for reform. The one current sited ‘cliche’ about Islam that I believe is “Muslims are the first victims of Islamist violence and persecution”. A true liberal would support these Muslims and stop calling their words lies... that’s what we are doing when we deny that there is anything wrong (against human rights) in Islam.

well were you considering banning hijab? Because that's oppression. Just because some Islamic countries force dress code does not mean we have to where there is freedom of religion. Plus, although there is no punishment for not observing hijab in traditional Islamic law it is considered sinful just like public nudity is illegal here they have their stricter laws. Plus, just because some women have families pressuring them the VAST majority of American Muslim women feel the most comfortable this way.

I visited a mosque with my school once. All the girls had to wear headcoverings and long sleeves and pants. It was summer and it was hot out. None of those regulations where placed upon the boys. We had to enter through different entrances and were not allowed in the same room as our male classmates. We tried to take a class photo to document the field trip, but we had to take two, one of the boys and one of the girls. During the visit in the mosque, a bit of my hair slipped out of my headscarf. You see, I have short hair that usually hangs into my face. That day, I had it all pinned away, but the pin didn’t hold and slipped into my face with my hair. I noticed and started trying to tuck it back. I moved back the headscarf while doing it. Our guide notices and starts going on a tirade about how important the headcoveing is, breaking of their explanation of a feature of the mosque. I learned a lot from that trip to the mosque.

Your experience with "being" a Christian in your family is exactly like mine. Even as a very young child, I was aware of the content taught in Sunday services and other classes (like "childrens church"), and no matter how much I deliberated, none of what I was hearing made any rational sense. I felt awful my whole childhood and into adulthood because I was forced to attend church and socially I needed to conform, lest I upset people around me or look "off". Finally as an adult in college, I came out as the atheist I always was and stopped attending church with the family. It was an awful, long period of being violently shamed, ostracized, and abused by my family. Years later however, I'm thankful to say it is mostly better.
