Huge Natural Saltwater Ecosphere - 4.5 month update - So much life! A complete succes!

Hey guys!
This time we are looking at the huge natural saltwater ecosphere again. This ecosphere is turning out to be really successful, that's quite rare for a saltwater ecosphere. The crab is growing quite large as well and seems very healthy. The polychaete sand mason worm turned out to be a spionid worm. It's amazing what we can find in just one ecosphere. I really like this closed ecosystem so far!

When I was in jr high 1988, we went snorkeling in summersville lake in wv and believe it or not there were tons of quarter size jellyfish in freshwater. A year later I had biology class in school, my teacher bragged on discovering and naming two kinds of freshwater invertebrates, I told him about the jellyfish and he said I was lying, right in front of the class, it was horrible. This was before Google so I couldn't prove it but I thought about the incident a couple years ago and sure enough, there is a small freshwater jellyfish in Appalachia that sometimes appears. Hope that SOB found out about them and felt bad but I doubt it.

I also found freshwater tiny tiny jellyfish once! It was in a moat around a castle, and the water was supposedly 90% freshwater and 10% salt water. Everybody told me I was lying, but I know damn well what I saw.

the only known freshwater cnidaria is hydroids... it is possible that a new type of jellyfish has been acclimating for freshwater which is interesting after all there is still some un discovered animals on the ocean.

Once while saltwater fishing in Tuscany, Italy, I caught a very strange looking jellyfish with a yellow orb inside them and what looked like veins spreading from it, never seen it after, but me and my family will forever know it exists, unfortunately it was before cellphones were widely spread so we never took a photo of it. The sea is still hiding many secrets!!

super cool. your adopted crustacean son has grown up so much. what a big boy indeed. this system is totally thriving i find it so crazy how even saltwater closed systems can thrive with no input just like a slice of nature. i have an aquarium and im putting a snail and some shrimp and a fish in it, and obviously i will look after them DILIGENTLY if they die im gona be really sad because ecospheres u can just scoop them up and leave them and they thrive... 😂 but i am taking some tips from nature in my aquarium... im using natural sunlight and allowing algae to grow. i have added lots of plants and a moss ball and dead leaf litter and some wood. im hoping the snail and shrimp will enjoy eating the algae, and to a lesser extent the fish waste, which the plants and algae will also eat... and neocaridinia shrimp breed pretty prolifically, the babies will enjoy the biofilm and infusoria and stuff, and the fish may snack on some of the babies... i am using a filter, and plant fertilizer, and i will be feeding the fish, as well as changing water so its by no means a natural aquarium but nature does kinda know what its doing with these critters so im trying to listen to it a bit! oops i rambled. the important thing is nice video, and nice sea jar!! x

This is now one of my favorite closed ecosystems. I have been studying how to create more sustainable tropical like ecosystems but I haven’t thought of salt water before. I can’t get over the variety of life that jar contains, the crab is very impressive. This inspires me to do more research on closed salt water ecosystems, I am very happy I found this video. You need to move to the coast or to an island. Half of my childhood was spent playing with crabs. I even managed to catch a spider crab in a rock pool that was big enough to eat.

Can I just say thank you for keeping us updated on this? I was so worried for the little crab but despite chancing his life on the success off this ecosphere, he seems to fairing rather well and that makes me really, really happy. I've been following this ecosphere since you first uploaded and I'm so excited about all the progress it's made. Out of almost all the videos I've run across on KZbin for these things this has got to be one of the most thriving ecospheres yet. Poor little crab must be a lonesome little thing though. :(

This is awesome! It looks so diverse! I noticed the sand is much darker at the bottom as it is compared to the top? Organisms are aerating the sand above but the sand below is not aerated so is home to a lot of bacteria! Do you think your crab keeps the ecosphere clean and helps ventilate the water when it moves around? I've never seen such a diverse ecosphere! You have life in all shapes and sizes within this. My ecosphere is nowhere near as impressive as this as my prawn hunted most of the interesting microfauna, thick hair algae is everywhere and it now has barnacles taking over the glass... lol. I think the sand is just lighter because of the lighting I used actually... It could very well be the case that the crab eats rotting algae and is keeping the ecosphere clean. Is your ecosphere salt or freshwater?

@@brianasheffield45 I wish I did :( I can describe it though! It's basically a 8l jar with sand and rocks. The sand is home to bacteria which turned all the lower part of the sand bed dark/black and there is a higher layer which is clear due to there being hundreds of small burrowing snails and worms that aerate the sand at that depth. The rocks are covered in thick string algae and so is some of the glass. The animals within are hundreds of tiny snails, worms, gammarus, isopods, copepods, some kind of limpet, 1 prawn and now barnacles which are growing over all the rocks/glass. Although it's stable unlike the first time I attempted this it still feels like a partial failure as I have learned that the prawn ferociously hunts any small inverts it can see so my jar is mostly still and lifeless other than snails, the prawn and the occasional small invert whizzing around that is brave enough to leave the algae. Also the barnacles taking over has worried me because I think they will take over the glass at some point and make it look really ugly. On the bright side though it's an educational experience and I know what to avoid next time! haha

I just came across your channel when I was looking for an ecosystem management computer game (basically what you do but in a game :')). Cut out and use a piece of circular plastic and cut a hole in the lid that size glue it together and the algae will get extra sunlight.
