Podcast is Called : ASN Humans Are Space Orcs , HFY and other stories
--------------
This Story is Classified as HFY or Humanity Feck, Yea , but what does the Mean?
-------------
HFY is a story/series that takes a “human element” in either humanity or an “other” (race/species or object) that exists in a “setting” (future or other world/universe) with varying levels of culture, technology, society and history that help show in some shape or form the potential good or bad for humanity’s race/culture. In These stories Humans are often referred to as Human, Humanity, Deathworlder, Hellwolder in reference to the human planet of origin , Earth. This planet is seen by most of the universe as a place where only death and chaos can survive.
-------------
Taken from the FAQ of the r/HFY subreddit.
Humans Are Space Orcs (HASO) or Humans Are (Fantasy Race) Are used as a guide when writing.
In these Stories we normally View humans like the other races view orcs in a Fantasy Novel. We (Humans) share the same characteristics and personalities as orcs. Humans are normally treated as the outsiders and barbarians. Humans tend to be underestimated as well in these stories. Unlike Humanity Feck Yea , these don't always put a positive spin on humans\humanity sometimes looking at the darker side of human and humanity from the perspective of aliens.

Very true, even the Egyptian Book of The Dead, which is a tablet with their religious beliefs regarding health and medicine one side, and their actual science based medical practices on the other. These practices include, triage, quarantining the sick away from the injured and healthy, and trial and error in developing medicines and treatments. Same things occured as humans evolved, as humans and our more primitive ancestors migrated to new areas that had different plants and animals. This is why we react so strongly to foods that have gone bad, to sour foods, etc, as this is an evolved trait that protected us from poisonous and or rotten things. At a point in our evolution; probably once we discovered fire and learned to cook food; we no longer needed the bacteria and or enzymes in our digestive system that still enables some animals to eat rotting animals, so it died off in our digestive tracts and we no longer are capable of eating rotting meat. Although I do wonder if the homeless who eat out of garbage bins might have regained these bacteria or enzymes.

Yes. I think that's how my ancestors figures out how to harvest the poisonous cassava. Cassava is rlly tasty, and the poisonous variant is also tasty, but deadly. However, if you soak it in water for 7 days the poison will go away. I wonder how many died a horrific death by poison so they could eat the cassava

According to human legend there was also the occasional mutant with transparent soft tissue, who examined the effects of various substances directly. Not to mention experimenting on prisoners of war, before that sort of thing was outlawed - this is one of the reasons why following the so-called rules of war is important when in conflict with Humans; you don't even want to imagine what they might do if they decide there are no rules.

Well capsaicin was developed as a natural pesticide that we ramped up... Though there is a cactus-like plant with a 16 billion on the scoville scale with resiniferatoxin , the chocolate contains theobromine which is toxic to even most animals on our planet, and caffeine is also a pesticide, it's the quantity that kills.

Dude, we use one of the most deadly toxins known to us as a beauty drug (Botulinum toxin, also known as botox). Also potatoes. Wild varieties have a neurotoxin. "Domestc" cultivars were breeded to remove this trait, but it can still happen, but not as potently as the wild variants. Also said neurotoxin can be neutralised through cooking.

Well, it is accurate. I mean, spice was developed by plants as a defence mechanism, to literally simulate pain upon consumption. But us humans literally decided "hmm this pain tastes good". And then we went about slowly but surely making it stronger. And then there's sour sweets. The strongest are literally equivalent to medium-strength hydrochloric acid (trust me, I used to have them regularly), and the strongest I've ever had are so strong that people have been hospitalised because they concentrated 3 of them into one part of the mouth and burned a hole through the outermost (on the inside of the mouth) 2 layers of the skin in the mouth. And yet we consume these things no problem. Our bodies don't get nearly enough credit for what they do. The human body is so adaptable that given mild exposure, it can learn resistance to many different types if toxins, poisons and even diseases.

@@ratre7349 That is kind of the point of "spices". They exist to "spice up" the taste of our food. All the basic taste directions (sour, sweet, etc.) are represented with spices of very different types. I wonder at which point the term "spice" became "spicy" and when exactly that started to refer solely to hot/sharp tasting spices? An alternative to the term "spice" would be "herb", which funnily enough exists in german too and means "savoury". Maybe both of these happened because most seasoning plants of any kind usually have at least a touch of either savoury or hot as a base to their own unique individual flavours.

Actually, these stories of human food being toxic to aliens makes a lot of sense as we already know retain human foods can be toxic to cats, dogs, and other animals. I can only imagine what some food from some alien species might do to us. There was a TV series a few decades ago called Roswell which has been spun off into a new series. On the original series the aliens who look just like humans have some odd dietary tastes such as putting hot sauce in their sodas. Apparently when the show first started some of the cast decided to drink the concoction, rather than the fake hot sauce, as one of the actors described how they were all runny noses and buggers, lol. So, it would be interesting to see what effects some plants and animals from another world might have on humans, we already know how caffeine, sugar, pot, etc, effects humans.

I worked in a sauce and condiments factory. Yes, eating spicy foods can kick your ass, but try inhaling chili powder! When we made hot sauce, clouds of chili dust hung in the air the entire shift, and we only had dust masks (not very effective) and safety glasses (not goggles) and no gloves to protect our hands. This sh*t literally burns your skin on contact! We had a lot of people quit after the first shift, but we also had a lot of people who didn't seem to be affected by chili dust . That was a long time ago, and I don't know what industry standards are now, but from what I've heard, just ten years ago people were still working in similar conditions. So yeah, humans are tough bastards!

There are at least 3 cases of "poison" being straight up food for humans. There's capsaicin as in the story, alcohol, which incidentally the early forms of brewing happened to kill off bacteria quite well and the alcohol limited new growth, and acids, in the same vein as alcohol used to kill off bacteria
@KarlSanathos

Almost all types of preparing food is one of many ways to poison the food in a very specific way so humans can still eat it but nothing we can't will grow in it. Fermentation, alcohol, adding acid, sugar or salt,..

The thing about "alien food" do not eat it before you're 100% sure it doesn't contrain something that's poision for you, imagine if we found an alien species who's "everyday apples" contain cyanide, so much that one bite would kill us.

I’m glad to see the “dangerous food” HFY idea taken rather reasonably for once. Capsaicin is an irritant so there might be some species whose biology overwhelmingly overreact, and both Coffee and Chocolate are known to be deadly to many animals, with varying degrees of danger even on earth.

To be fair, would be extremely irresponsible if we share our foods with so much discare, I mean, give chocolate a dog and you'll get what happened to the Yurthu. I guess that if we export foods to other species, will be mandatory to be tagged who can and who can't eat such stuff, doesn't matter if they are thougher or weaker than us

@@2ndbrain909 ehh, stomach acid can fuck you up. That's what acid reflux is and it can do some serious damage. Your stomach is designed to handle it, it has a thick mucus layer and the lining of the stomach grows back extremely quickly. The stomach acid does f*** up the lining, it just grows back fast enough to deal with it. But get stomach acid elsewhere and it can do some pretty severe damage to your body.
