I remember when this came out, but I never bought it since I had so much else to play at the time. Looks like I dodged a bullet thanks to your review. Certainly not going to go out of my way to go back and play this one LOL. I have no love for games with too many puzzles and hard to find openings to go through. Thanks yet again for another banger review, even if it took me 3 years to get around to watching it 😁. I don't play newer games too often, but I have a collection that stretches from Atari all the way up to modern with at least a few games for everything. There might be a few more of these that pop up along the way. And yeah, the visuals were something else. I felt like they went against the grain of what kinds of games were being made at the time. I also love the aesthetic of the 16-bit generation and the the way all the characters look in EGG reminded me of that. It was definitely a beautiful game.

Making you beat 100 enemies in a row, just to be able to do your good attack without injuring yourself, is such an unfun game element. And the perspectives confused me too, it wasn’t always clear which areas were higher or lower.

@@hungrygoriya I beat Egg a few weeks ago. I hear you on the issues, but it's still a good game. That NPC that you have to beat 100x in a row is actually very easy if you do it first thing at the beginning of the game. I did it after about an hour and a half. It was a drag but the item makes the game 10000% easier. I couldn't imagine trying to beat Egg without it. If anything, it makes you overpowered. Lol

I'm convinced games like this were made to sell strategy guides. It seems like a cool game that I would have loved as a kid, but alas I am now spoiled by the expectation of quality of life. In some ways I feel sad that I missed out on so many cool games when I had the ability to tolerate them.

I've heard of this game but never seen it until now. Seems well constructed enough but certainly could have used a little more constructive efforts. I think it looks great all things considered, shame I sold my Dreamcast. I liked your mention of the lightning in Final Fantasy 10, that was horrible. I am not joking when I say I was shaking and my head was involuntarily twitching to the side when I finished that nonsense.
@hungrygoriya

The people out there that love this game really love it, but I just couldn't get past the flaws that made the basics tough to manage. It's gorgeous and sounds amazing though... that part of the experience I was quite happy with. I played Final Fantasy X when it was new (I got it for my 16th birthday along with a PS2) and it was my first turn-based RPG. The first time I'd heard of such a thing as an ultimate weapon, and the first time I'd been thrown through a wringer trying to obtain such things... it's a much more fond memory for me since I fell madly in love with the game, but the Lightning Plains will always be this weird time suck that I'll think back on, scratching my head and wondering if there was a better way.
@RetroPerspective
@RetroPerspective 4 жыл бұрын
@@hungrygoriya They could have made it less of a seizure trap by attaching it to a mini game in an alternate version of their initial dungeon mechanic. I remember playing the game when it was new at the age of 17. I loved it, and the Thunder Plains remains one of my favorite places. But after that mini game whenever I returned to the game I would intentionally let myself get zapped and close my eyes for the flash. I wanted no part of dodging anything again. In retrospect what I love about the game, despite a few superfluous characters and obvious crunch time-induced flaws, is it dared to make the player sad. Not only does it contain a number of core facets of a Shakespearean tragedy, but nothing good happens to anyone in that game. Few RPGs tried to do that before FF10.

This isn't a RPG, its an Action Adventure and a very bad one at that. Controls suck ass in every aspect no matter if 2D or 3D. The story doesn't make any sense mostly due to the fact that EVERYTHING happend or was made 5000 years ago; borndays included of people who also was grown 5000 years ago. The sidequests are horrendous with no substance whatssoever and the NPCs lack soul and are expendable. And as for the OST its the same as Record Of Loddoss War: obnoxious, overdriven and uncreative.

Wow, I'm surprised by some of the problems you had with this game, for me it had the right amount of puzzles, not too many, seeing dark pits and what you can climb or not was the most obvious thing for me. I agree with you about the Wired Arm but surprised that it was frustrating to you, since it never led me to fall or to receive damage from enemies and it's so easy to position yourself right for it to work that it was never a problem, and the moment at 6:16 just made me laugh because I imagined you in an infinite loop trying to get to the right place XD. Enemies do a lot of damage, so you should enter a room or climb and descend stairs already in spindash form to kill them quickly, since it only takes like 2 or 3 hits to kill most of the enemies, and the upgrades are basically rewards from exploring. This game is literally like a Zelda game
@hungrygoriya
@hungrygoriya 4 жыл бұрын
Haha yeah, I know. I feel like a lot of my issues with this game came from the way I was playing it, which was mostly trying to conserve my health since I kept getting my butt kicked so much. I rarely used the spin dash attack since it seemed counterintuitive to "waste" health (there was no way in hell I was getting the eco spinner), but I think if I had relied on it more, it might've made the experience a lot better for me. And I was stuck going around and around in that part for at least a few minutes trying to get where I needed to go. Something about this whole game just didn't click with me :D I always really personalize my reviews too, so it comes across a bit on the negative side, especially when I struggled to get through as much as I did here. I've played a lot of Zelda too so I have no idea where my disconnect was... sigh.
@yanbelmiro7961

@hungrygoriya 4 жыл бұрын
@@yanbelmiro7961 Well, I knew it did more damage, but it also drains your health while you use it so I didn't want to run out of HP while killing enemies, you know? I was a HUGE fan of the Dreamcast, and picked this game up on a whim during a summer dry spell in releases for the console. My regular shop had a cheap used copy, and it was one of the few games with 2D hand-drawn art on the system, so I gave it a shot despite there having been very few reviews of it IIRC. I'm sure it had a lot to do with when I played it, and the lack of similar Zelda-esque titles on the system, but I ended up absolutely loving it. I mastered the timing & angles on the stubby punch, explored every pixel of that beautiful world, and I have a feeling I might've won all 100 vs. matches as well. Action RPGs and overhead Action-Adventure games are often such fun, but this one sounds painful. Sympathy to you for fighting against that slow attack start up and the lack of a range weapon. I understand your frustrations with some of the game mechanics very well, the combat is hard to master and i too died like a million times up to points of frustration, the optional minigames are very hard to complete, too hard even, but ultimately as a whole package i do love the game very much, especially the story and soundtrack. Btw did you know this was supposed to be a late Saturn game? They eventually decided to make it for the Dreamcast instead with hastily added 3d fights (the one thing i think the game could do without)

Elemental Gimmick Gear seems like a game that decided to try to be too many things and mastered none of them. The different art styles and design choices seemingly clash with one another and make the game feel disjointed. The beautifully drawn backgrounds with what appear to be pre-rendered sprites really clash and then you have 3-D boss sections and shoot em up levels which are nothing like the rest of the game. My personal feelings about the game aside I really loved this review. It flowed beautifully and stayed on point throughout. You have really mastered the transitions and your editing is getting really good! Thank you for continuing to bring us great content and I look forward to your next review! :)

Thank you very much for your kindness. You're right though... this game really did try to be way too many things. I think it had a lot of potential though, if even one of those things would've been fleshed out a little more.

What a great and useful review, super clear and helped me decide whether to give it a go.

Cool review, too bad the game was disappointing. I was quite amused by it being called Egg though.

Thank you! I think with a little more polish in a few areas, it could've been excellent! I'm still feeling really disappointed that this game didn't sweep me off my feet like I was expecting, but what can you do?

If Secret of Mana's whipping poles are good by comparison that's a little scary. :S

Hey man... when you're trying to escape an angry spinning egg and you get murdered trying to get to the other side because you a) have to charge it up and b) accidentally aren't aiming exactly right, THAT's a scary thing, hahaha

Yeah? It has a lot of good going for it. I just wish the combat hadn't been so frustrating. Did you get the econo-spinner (I think that's what it's called)

@@danielmckinney7668 No worries! I was just wondering. I know a fellow who saved his game right after getting the ecospinner (or whatever it's called) that he goes back to when he replays the game because he never wants to have to do that again!

Damn. I've had this game in my Dreamcast pile for years thinking it was somewhat of a gem. I guess I owe it myself to check it out anyway but I'll be honest I think you've saved me a wasted evening. Thanks for another great video (and for enduring the pain required to produce it)

I think it's still worthwhile playing it as long as you play with a guide so you're not wondering what to do next all the time. That was the biggest problem I ran into. And if you want to sink in the time for the ecospinner to have a fighting chance at fighting, of course. But you're very welcome! Thanks for checking it out.

Pop it in for the music at least. It can invoke such a sublime nostalgic feeling.

I'm so glad I passed it up back in the day, but I'm happy as a collector to have it for its music. Back then I would've felt burned, but something about the cover and screenshots at the time said to back away to me. Time Stalkers fooled me but resulted in a quick return. That made me more scrutinizing.

The soundtrack in this game is hands down the best part. I really love the visuals too... but yeah, you definitely had the right feeling. Everywhere I heard about EGG online was highly praising it, and I fell for it... And thanks for the tip on Time Stalkers. I'll keep that in mind!
