I have yet to be through a hurricane in FL that tops this one and I've been through quite a few since. I remember this storm made me genuinely scared for my life when it hit and going without power for 2+ weeks afterwards made me appreciate electricity so much more lol.
@dahliablack90174 жыл бұрын
I agree with you ma'am. I was 15 when this made land fall in punta Gorda/ Port Charlotte area. And I lived right on the beginning of Rock Creek and Edgewater and I had a lake behind my house I remember one point thinking that my parents and myself were going to die because I watched my pool cage slam into my sliding glass door it just kept hitting it and you could see the winds bowing my sliding glass door luckily it didn't break it but we really thought that the glass door was going to go and that that was going to be it for us and I'm so thankful that that storm didn't carry any surge otherwise I probably wouldn't be here today! I was in Highlands county for Irma the storm ended up following my family and I we decided to go to Highlands county because that's where my sister was and if you remember Irma was supposed to be really catastrophic carrying surge and everything else so we figured that if we went to Highlands county we would be safer while she ended up changing her path and Highlands county got it really bad but that storm really didn't scare me not anything like Charlie

I'm a survivor of this hurricane. No video can ever do it justice. These were brave souls to be in town to witness the destruction. Many of them were there to give aid after the storm as well, and to document the storm, to help better prepare us for future storms. These people are heroes sometimes. It's difficult to see that, when you didn't see your town fly away around you.

There was actually a gust to 174 mph reported there. Insane! Charley's stronger than any hurricane I've ever been in and we've had some bad 'canes down here in collier County. I think the last hurricane we had that was that bad was Donna in 1960, well before I was born.

Big tornadoes have higher wind speeds but of course hurricanes impact much larger areas and last longer. The gas station scene here shows Charley's winds of around 155 mph. The 1999 tornado that struck Moore, Oklahoma, had wind speeds of over 300 mph. Choose your weapon!
@cyclonefreak25687 жыл бұрын
that 1999 300 mph tornado was extremely rare just there are rare tropical cyclone to like hurricane Patrica with winds speeds at 215 to 240 mph near the eye Wich can last for hours!!! now choose your weapon!!!
@marka11427 жыл бұрын
To be honest, if you get caught in the middle of either, you're going to have a bad hair day. Extreme wind speeds in both categories are rare - thankfully - but tornadic winds still rule the anemometer. 318mph recorded in the 1999 twister. But both are incredible examples of what Ma Nature can unleash.

So the storm wasn't originally going over Charlotte Harbor/Punta Gorda area. The eye of the storm was supposed to hit Tampa area, which is 100 miles north. My brother, who was in the Navy, called us three hours before any news station reported it, that the hurricane has shifted and was going directly over Punta Gorda/Charlotte Harbor (my house). Hours later, the news stations finally reported it. Many people didn't have the time board up the windows or had already evacuated. Even more people stayed in their homes because they didn't think it was going to hit as bad.

Yes, I was even in Cutler Ridge for Hurricane Andrew. Hurricane are worse than tornadoes for a couple reasons. With tornado's, in the most commonly prone areas, 90% of homes have basements. Yes tornadoes are much shorter, but can be just as powerful to some extent. But I invite people to search Hurricane Andrew and look at the scene from air. That was the worst and largest "Kill Zone" I have ever seen. I do have a couple friends who are meteorologists and they do agree. Even he National Hurricane Center in Miami was severely damaged!

Charlie was wet and wild! We got sideswiped by it in Central Florida and lost power for four days. I was lucky to get a rented Honda generator from Home Depot and I kept extending the rental until power came back on. Luckily, I had a Lawn Maintenance/Landscaping company and had plenty of gas. We took our showers in our swimming pool and cooked a lot on our propane BBQ. Of course, Charley was NOT the last hurricane to hit Florida in 2004. We got hit by three other major hurricanes that year Jeanne, Frances and Ivan followed Charley. Thankfully, I had bought a generator after Charley and that turned into a wise investment.

I remember sitting in the house watching the walls "breathe" in and out. We got hit stong with hurricane Wilma too. If im correct they said that storm basically came in sideways which made us get the strongest winds.

As a Hurricane Hugo witness in Charlotte which is 180 miles from the coast I would say a tornado, as devastating as it is, is compared to a hurricane as is a firecracker is to Hiroshima. The wind blew here for 9 hours at 90 mph sustained with gusts to 110 mph and in CHARLOTTE which is 180 miles from the ocean it took 4 months and 203,000 dump truck loads to clear the debris and 93% of the power was down for up to 2 weeks.
