We had some major leak repairs on a air cooled chiller RTAA Trane chiller. We broke open a screw compressor to replace the rotor housing to bearing housing oring. Sadly we had a very close call on the compressor at startup but it worked out.

Sounds like you have the same luck I have with our Trane distributor here in Okc. Some of my buildings have some RTAA’s and have had so many issues getting the correct parts…. Constantly. So much so that when they say 3 days for a part I just go ahead and plan for 10 days because I know it most likely will 1. Not arrive on time and 2. It will be the wrong part. I feel your pain so much on this video.

These compressors are a lot more durable than what we give them credit for. It wasn't an ideal situation what happened here but shit happens. I had chiller with a 20hp 4D discus sit out for almost a year with no discharge service valve since the valve failed and could not be sourced within the country. I transferred the original part to the customer so that he can get it machined and made at a custom shop. I strapped the discharge up like you did here with electrical tape, a plastic bag over it and more tape. The customer sat on his ass with the part until summer arrived basically. I forced an oil change on him and more $$ added to the quote no questions asked. I would've loved to work with a guy like you back in the states. The equipment you work on and the challenges is my kind of gig.

Great job. I have experienced one of those heart stopping moments. After a repair like that I always let the crankcase heaters take over for 24hrs. It is amazing how it helps everything lubricated

I worked for Trane and we got the wrong parts all the time. In the end, rather than just using the model number and serial, we used to get the model numbers off the compressor or other parts where possible. It is worth noting that the parts department are mostly non technical. They get the details from a database and you hope they press the right keys!!

Its true, sadly I tried that here and still got same result. They chose to ignore the compressor tags and went for the chiller tag instead.

great video! from experience giving technical assistance to Trane and other leading brands, i always developed some kinda of plug/tampons for the connections. Don't need to be the strongest/spiff ones. Just 4/5 stable PSI avoid any air/moisture to enter the circuit. Maybe few houndred bucks for the client but it's always better for both sidesthan taking the risk of having a production line stopped for longer.

If the liquid valve gives trouble. Use the vapor valve as you did. But flip the tank upside down. It’s actually better than using the liquid valve with a dip tube.

7:49 Putting a lot of faith into Trane getting the right part and especially when You Pay for overnight, it's Always at least 2-3 days. Yes and now that Trane has changed their parts and sales computer program (once again) They literally have lost so many part numbers and/or how, when,or if they are going to get any item. When you have to go into the warehouse and show the parts person what parts on an old or warranty return compressor that you need, then it turns into a half hour class for all sales people including manager and outside sales of what this part actually is, does and what parts you need so that they understand because they don't know how to look up stuff on their own site.

Assistindo aqui do Brasil. Gabriel

Trane and JCI are really good at screwing up parts orders, love it when Trane then tries to charge me re-stoking fees for their mistakes. I don't give them the unit serial number for more than one reason if you know what I mean, I get the parts numbers directly from the comfortsite.

Dude always put the parts request in writing such as email. I tell them send everything by email. I will call you only to run the credit card. I had jci send me a $2k valve. Sent to me for the wrong circuit. They told me no refund. Wtf? It’s all in the email very clear. They had to eat it,

I noticed that the EXV was left open while charging. Wouldn’t that allow liquid refrigerant to enter suction of compressor? Could have caused binding, the over night let the refrigerant boil off with the CCH.

I didn't know Trane US messed up the parts like that , being across the pond that kinda makes me less pissed off 😅 By the way , I thought Nylog would sorta hold the O-ring in place ? Over here we use the Parker Super O-lube , it's sticky so it holds it in place , but I don't like it because its Silicon based so I don't want any of it getting into the circuit ...

Stationary equipment was never the problem, as it can be tightened up and usually was kept that way. You might lose a few pounds of Freon in a decade, at most; and on a Freon-12 system it is even easier to hold because condenser pressure need not be so high. That does not compare with the dozens of pounds of Freon that would be gassed off every shift by a printed circuit fabrication plant. On the most bitterly cold nights, I would see a cloud of re-condensing Freon hanging over a plant in my area. Of course, the transportation air conditioning was a big insult to the ozonosphere, but we proved that could be tightened up, as well. Our atmosphere is making good progress at repairing the damage we were inflicting on it with Freon.

Quick question, Did you drain the water piping before pulling the gas out? If it has glycol in it i assume you dont need to drain it? If not, why, i thought you could freeze the tubes that way.

If that happens again put a nitrogen bleed on the compressor to keep air and moisture out. We have went as far as having a liquid nitrogen tank delivered if it was going to be a long delay

Hey question. The gasket on the discharge side. Did you all end up having to pull that hole assembly and shaft out or did you just stretch the gasket over the discharge house?
