Let us know which club works best for your game! Important to remember (as always with these tests) that this wasn't meant to be a definite representation of which club will perform better for an individual. With the data in the video we've shown the differences in ball flight between the two clubs, which will apply at any ball speed. Whether it works for you...you'll have to go out and get fit to find out! 😉

This video came at the perfect time for me and is really quite interesting. I want a club for going into Par 5s in two and I've never been truly comfortable with the hybrids I've owned. For some reason I never considered a 5 wood, but perhaps I should. My UT is my non-driver club off the tee, so a high flying 5 wood might just be what I'm looking for. Thanks, fellas!

I have been using a Cobra 3-4 hybrid at 19 degrees for over a year now and love it both from the tee and in the fairway (to be honest mostly from the rough)
@jonasandersen21266 жыл бұрын
my 2 and 4 iron for sure (of the longer clubs). I don't now why but my misses with irons are usually just short, my woods and hybrids are all over the place. But I think this is just because when I first started playing golf I asked for the 2 hardest clubs to hit, got a 60 degree and a 4 iron, my buddy claimed "when you can hit these, then you can play golf" so I practiced with them until I could hit them OK. Have to say that it has served me good, my handicap was down to 17 at the end of that same summer :)

I bought my first hybrid ever. A 22 degree hybrid. Wow what I love that club. Works from both the ruff and fairway without any problems. It has quickly become my "go to" club.
@MissyLaMotte6 жыл бұрын
I have a 22 ° 7wood and a 22° hybrid (slow swinging lady here) and as you find in the video as well, they both go about the same distance, the wood with a bit more height. The reason I prefer to put the hybrid in the bag usually is that I am way more confident with it out of light rough or even a fairway bunker. I just can't get myself to hit a wood anywhere but on the fairway (or off the tee, of course). Also I find it easier with the hybrid to just hit a shorter lower punch shot out from out under trees and the like.
@bitmastermac6 жыл бұрын
MissyLaMotte I’m hoping that works for me. I go from a 3 wood lofted as a 4, to a Heavenwood 7 lofted 20-22. The 3 goes straight and long off the deck, but I’m struggling with the 7. I just moved to senior Recoil shafts in all but the 7, so that might be my trouble, but I just bought a 3 hybrid based on my success with 4 and 5 hybrids. I also just ordered a senior Recoil shaft that I’ll cut to 7 wood length for a final comparison. I haven’t played in 18 years and my swing speed slowed. I went from firm to regular, then realized I needed a lighter flex in the middle of my purchase spree. Only cost me 3 shafts, so I’m not super bummed. Fitters always scared me, or at least the rolling eyes I expect to get. These guys seem like the ones I’d trust with my fragile golf confidence. I’m 65 and fit, with a 20 handicap these days.

I made the switch from a 5wood to hybrid years ago and never looked back. It had nothing to do with distance/feel as I hit my 5wood extremely well (and loved it). It had to do with those crappy "in the sh*t" lies off the fairway, in a divot, or a bunker 200+ away from the green. I simply would want to hit down harder on the ball for those kind of lies while still getting my consistent distance, the hybrid allowed me to confidently do so knowing I would not break my 5wood shaft (which had happened a few times). The hybrid also allowed me to do a simple chip and run or even putt from off the green in certain odd situations. Off the tee or fairway a 5wood is fantastic, but for me there is just more utility all-round with a hybrid.

Hybrids all the way for me. Being barely 5' 5'', I just feel so much more confident with hybrids. In fact, I have a 2,3 and 4 hybrid in my bag and I use them in all kinds of situations: from the fairway, as a driver, for approach shots, around the green. And I experiment a lot with them when ther's nobody around...

Revisited this video as I've rebuilt my entire bag (3 wedges, PW-5iron, 22 & 18 Hybrids, 3W, D) and after fighting with my Epic #2 18 degree Hybrid for a while (loved it off the tee but too inconsistent and not enough hight off the fairway for a 230 club), I decided to go with an 18 degree Rogue Subzero 5 wood - and I love it. Every single thing about the club is a better fit for me: ease of consistent shot shape, ease of launch off fairway, & peak height for carries into Par 5s. After making the switch, I adjusted the loft on my 4 hybrid to 21 degrees from 22 for a gapping tweak and as a byproduct have hit it off of tees on short or tight Par 4s for a 220 accurate shot off the tee - something I never did before.

I recently got rid of my 3 wood and 3 hybrid and replaced it with a 5 wood. Best choice I ever made. Easier to hit off the fairway, and easier to hit a more solid shot with a higher launch than a 3 wood. Feels more comfortable than a hybrid when I'm setting up to the ball. The extreme offset in the hybrids always bothered me.

Great demo to show flight character of these two clubs. I game a 4 hybrid and 5 wood for the option of low flight and shot shaping of the 4h and the 5w for better height and a bit more distance. While these two are somewhat redundant in terms of distance, I think having the options in long approach shots worth carrying both.

3 years ago and I've watched this plenty of times over the 3 years. The gap between 3 wood and 4 iron has been up for grabs more times than any other club in my bag. Have played 5 wood, 3 hybrid and 2 iron on and off and never seem to settle. Finally settled on an Epic Flash Sub Zero 5 wood with heavy weight forward. Gives me great height but not crazy high spin. Is great because it matches my 3 wood which I love. Always have the 2 iron available for linksy courses or windy days. Reintroduction of a 5 wood as my main gamer has been a game changer

Really interesting differences to see between the two clubs. I remember my Dad in the late 90s has a huge set of woods from Driver, through, 3, 5, 7, 9 and down to 11. I used to have a 27 degree 7 wood when i was a junior and didn't have the club speed to properly launch a 4 iron. At the top end of my bag now I have a 3 wood, 19 degree hybrid, and a 2 and 3 MP-H4 iron. I mix and match depending on wind conditions and how confident I've been hitting the hybrid and wood. I find they can snap hook way more than the irons, and because I don't struggle with height, if it's windy, I want to keep the ball lower.

Really enjoyed this analysis...... 3 years ago I bought a Titleist Driver; 3; 5 wood plus Hybrid, 5 irons down to 9 to add to my existing Taylormade 7 wood (old favourite) plus my Mizuno PW; 52 and 56 wedges. This was all accidental in some ways but I love this combination. I get the same or similar distance with my 5 wood and hybrid I do get that additional height with the 5 wood, which you need at time.. I’m an old guy so don’t get the distances but, I can agree that the results are very similar

As a 17 handicapper I have 5wood, 3hybrid and 4hybrid in the bag at the same time. They each give me different carry distance to complement my driver and irons. I mostly use the 5W from the tee and fairway but if I end up in the rough I prefer my hybrids.
@brianyoung35 жыл бұрын
I think the discussion here is: what club (or clubs) is/are going to fit the gap between your 3-wood and your longest iron. I went from a 5-wood which I hardly used, to an 18-degree hybrid to a 2 driving iron (16.5). Now, they all go about the same distance but they all have their pro's and cons and each person is going to have to chose which one suits the shots they like to make, which they are better at, and whether they are going to use the club enough for it to be worth carrying.
@devinwright1316 жыл бұрын
In all seriousness though, this is why I carry the old RBZ stage 2 19*. The bigger headed hybrid gives me the best of both worlds in that I can hit it higher/lower and even off the tee occasionally on short par 4’s. I know it’s not the most forgiving model but it was a very affordable option that covers what I need.

Once again, this helps a lot. My bag is not yet complete so I was deciding between a hybrid or 5 wood and I'm now going for the 5 wood. I sport both a 5 wood and a 4 hybrid. Would say I carry and hit them about the same yardages on average. I don't know if it's shaft length or if my hybrid has a bit of offset to it, but I choose between the clubs more or less based on where the trouble is. My bad 5 wood shots tend to fly right and my bad hybrid shots to the left. This probably comes down to swing flaws but it feels safe to know that I can effectively close out on side of the track.

Enjoyed the vid. I've always gone with a 3/5 wd combo althought the 3 lately has been a 16.5 degree wood. Because hybrids are typically easier out of heavier rough, I am going with a slightly larger hybrid for confidence and believe that I will not lose yardage. Even though the shaft difference 42 v 40, is great, I may obtain better contact with the shorter shaft. We will see.

Maybe I should get a 2nd hand model to try out.

I haven’t hit my 3 wood in 2 yrs. Club pro suggested I go to strong 3H (17* TSi 2). Then I gap down with 4H and 5H. 5H replaces my 4i. With my long game set up like this, it allows me to carry an extra wedge. I have a little bit of a gap between my driver and 3H but I am ok with that.

I ended up going with the ping g400 5 wood and 7 wood. Even though I have plenty of speed (126 mph driver) and no issue elevating a hybrid. But I can loft the 5 wood and 7 woods down 1 degree and slightly open the face. And if much rather have a club that initially is high launch and I use technique to flight it down, vs having a club that launches low and I have to work to launch it high. For me it’s always easier to flight it lower with technique vs adding height.
@ultradcool1226 жыл бұрын
I used to play a 5 wood but most the courses in my area stay a bit wet so it would either plug or not move. So I ended up going with a 2 iron a lot less height so I would get the lower flight and enjoy it
@oakcctrk6 жыл бұрын
Another great video it’s funny I feel way more confident with my hybrid than any 5 wood I have tested and I feel I can manipulate the flight better with a hybrid. It’s so interesting to see how 2 clubs with the same loft can go the same distance via different routes. It again hammers home the importance of going to a place like TXG to a all through your game to help discern what might be the best club for your game. I really want to see Matt hit a 1 iron for fun lol.

I didn't expect a hybrid to travel as far as a fairway wood. I use a 5 wood and hit it well; I can't say the same for a 4 hybrid, and I've tried 3 of them. Thanks for putting this comparison out there.
@storieswithaly12476 жыл бұрын
Just a quick note that while I have tried now two or three 5 woods even through fittings, in the end I am better with, more comfortable with a hybrid as it’s more like an iron stroke wise so as I use it (or them as I deploy two hybrids) often instead of irons - hence I only use 7-wedges in irons, the hybrids have been a life saver and I seem to get more accuracy with them (different makes but both tweaked for length and swingweight and loft - one Mizuno, one cobra). Matt just a point where you were more confident with the larger head I find I am less confident - maybe a factor because the one area that I still struggle with especially is my driver. Goes back to fit for the specific individual and their needs.

I use both hybrids and a 5 wood. I bought the X2Hot 1-3-5 a couple of years ago because that's what I always had but I'm re-evaluating my bag and at the point where I'm into carrying different bags for different courses. I'm going to try out a 17 degree 3 wood, basically a 4 wood, and maybe eliminate the 3 and 5 wood altogether. Plenty of options to try out.
@clubchampionmedia6 жыл бұрын
Personally I'm big fan of the 4 wood, find it a bit easier to hit than the 3 wood and goes about as far. We should be doing my fairway wood fitting on the channel pretty soon and I'll be asking Ian to try the 4 wood option so stay tuned for that.
@EDTHEWATERGUY6 жыл бұрын
I love my 5 wood since it's so easy to hit and I use it like three different clubs. I choke down on it an inch for every 15 yard I need to take off of it. I hit it 220 yards with a full grip,205 gripping down one inch and 190 gripping it all the way down to the bottom of the grip.
@yungkory72756 жыл бұрын
As someone who just doesn't get along with hybrids, this definitely opened my eyes to bagging a 5w, or maybe even something in the 22* loft area to cover the distance between my 3w and 4i. Currently playing a more forgiving 3i, and while it is great off the tee, the forgiveness isn't as great off of the fairway.

My 5 wood is one of the most useful clubs in my bag; I use it for anything from 260-230, and it is a steel-shafted (X100 @42.5") monster^^ I went to steel since I couldn't find a graphite shaft heavy enough that I liked. As for hybrids, I like them, but since I started carrying a 64* wedge I have to decide between the hybrid and 4 iron...the 4 iron usually wins out. Before the 64 came along, I used to carry two 5 woods (one for tee shots and another smaller one for the fairway), which was no problem since I don't carrying a 3 wood. So, it is nice to see that at least one of my clubs can keep up with Matt ;~)

I actually got rid of my 3&5 woods and replaced with 2&3 hybrids. After watching this video, I think I've made the right decision. Where I play, 2 of the 4 par 5's are up hill, 1 is flat and the other is downhill. Over the past few years, wind has become a factor more than ever. I'm not a high ball hitter so by putting in hybrids I find I have better control and at the same time haven't really lost any distance. Your thoughts?

So... i tend to hook hybrids spectacularly... Then i sinned... :) & took 2" off my epic 5wood (rogue max in x-flex) The club shoots bullets, don't think it missed a fairway yet & is just as effective off the deck. Ball flight is more penetrating but it stops and goes just as far as it used to. Only thing i do not like is how light the club head feels now, but will gladly live with the results. Thanks for a great show as always.

I have a 5 wood (18 degree 42 inch) and a 3 hybrid (19 degree, 40.5 inch) i find i get very similar distances with both. I use the wood off the fairway and t, and i use the hybrid out of the rough. I could probably get away with keeping 1 but i have no idea which to keep. Its killing me
@thomt82586 жыл бұрын
Hi Ace: here's two pennies of commen cents to stop you from killing yourself: Just keep the 5 wood and always put yoiur drives in the fairway. LOL Seriously, Given that you can probably hit the hybrid well out of the fairway, keep the hybrid and then you can choose if you want to drive into the rough or fairway, which is an option; with the extra club spot go with a gap wedge or ??????????

Another great video guys. Playing down here in Texas in windy conditions with a fast swing speed a 5 wood would balloon up on me big time! Love my cobra F7 hybrid.

I too have a love affair with my F7 hybrid. Probably my fav club to hit

Just going off many of the responses here and from what I read in golf forums and club reviews, a lot of people find the hybrids have a draw bias and many don't play them because they either hook them or can't fade them or work the ball the way they want. Sounds like this could be a video/challenge for you guys. Explaining why hybrids tend to draw so often and testing for or finding a line of hybrids that doesn't have this inherent draw bias or maybe some fitting/tuning possibilities to remove the draw bias in the hybrids.

Absolutely, tons of comments to that effect and would make a great video.

Could you make a 2 HY vs 3 Wood?

I would love this video. I have both right now and debating on which to game.

This was an awesome demonstration! I have always played a 5 & 7 wood. Never hit the hybrid as well. Thanks!

Thanks again for this tiny video. Great stuff. To be honest I switched to hybrids quite a long time ago and forgot my 5 wood completely. After this video I surely will take the 5 wood again into consideration during my fitting process. I also forgot how much confidence I felt at address position over the 5 wood though the longer shaft makes it a little more difficult to hit. I remembered immediately when you mentioned😊. Well done.

I carry a Ping G 400 5 Wood in my bag. Love that club. Matter of fact I have the Ping G 400 3, 5, 7, 9 Woods and also added a Callaway Rogue 11 Wood. :) Love the Woods. But I also have to say that I have a complete set of really nice hybrids too. I have a 3,4, 5, 6 and 8 in hybrids and they are split between Callaway Rogue X and Ping G 400's. Love the way I am set up with the woods and hybrids now. Lots of great choices. Spider Dubiel

Great video, guys. I'd be really keen to see the driving iron vs hybrid, especially something like the P790 vs 818H2? My personal setup is Driver at 8.5, 3W at 15.5, 5W at 18.5, 4H at 22, 5H at 25. The two hybrids are simply incredible out of the rough, but tend to draw a little too much off the fairway. My 915F is a mid-flight 5W and is my go-to club from good lies. I used to carry a 3H but just couldn't get along with it and much prefer the look and feel of a fairway wood at that shaft length.

A FW has a long shaft so my concern is consistency, a hybrid is still a rather low ball flight so stopping power is a problem. So what should i pick to make 2nd shoots into par 5s? Okay I play driver - 3iron still (okay its a very old iron (H&B TPS 1988), so more like 4.5 iron nowadays). I am looking for accuracy and non-workability. I can't get the 3 iron to stop fast enough, although I have slightly higher ball flights. I am a 24y old male and don't have distance issues. I essentially dialed my entire set to high consistency eventhough I sometimes play back tees to get more for my golf course money.

Get a 5w (or 4wood) with a shorter shaft

Interesting points. I carry a full set of M 6 hybrids. 3,4,5, 6 and 7. However I also have a Ping G 410 S.F. T. # 5 Wood in the bag as well. I really think its a good idea. The Taylormade M 6 # 3 Hybrid and Ping # 5 Wood are very close in the distance I hit them though with a good medium swing. I am sure if I pushed the envelope though the 5 Wood might travel a bit further. The lie is really important during this selection. I can hit both 5 Wood and # 3 Hybrid both well off the tee The Ping G 410 Wood is good at hitting off the ground but the M 6 Hybrid does better on tough lies. Bear in mind the Ping G 410 Wood is adjustable loft wise. Spider Dubiel

Great Video Guys. I’ve always debated this topic with myself. Nice to see it presented in such a good way. Always liked my 5 wood. But good to know that a hybrid on a windy day would work as well. Will be in soon!

As a low handicap, average swing speed player, the other main element on why I carry a 5 wood is workability. I can make a 5 wood fade,. I can also hook it out and run it. Hybrids always just want to go straight or draw for me. I can't confidently cut a 19 degree hybrid into a 220 pin. But, if the ball is down in the rough from 200 plus out...I only want a hybrid in these situations. I vary between driving iron / 21 degree hybrid, but the 5 wood is always in the bag.
@superfly1187 Жыл бұрын
any issue with running both? I am actually looking at adding the M3 to gap from 5 iron to 5 wood
@claytonpeirens2726 жыл бұрын
Looking forward to the driving iron to be thrown into the mix. I almost think a person needs to rotate in/out clubs (driving iron, hybrid, or fairway wood) depending on the course and weather conditions
@ircunning26976 жыл бұрын
Good point Clayton. I have 18 clubs that I choose from depending on which courses I am playing. I will pull out my 2 and 3 hybrid and put in a 5 wood and 64 wedge when I play municipal courses with hard traps. I will also pull out my 4 and 5 iron and put in the 4 and 5 hybrid if I play courses with deep rough. I can hit the 5 hybrid out of the gnarliest lies and get it out of almost any fairway bunker, but it's tricky to keep the flight down if needed. If I don't know the course I will carry 2-4 hybrids and the rest irons with no woods. If I had to choose, I'd pick hybrids over woods because I find them more versatile and easier to control trajectory. It would take a much better player than me to flight down a 7 or 9 wood. Great content guys!

19 hybrid also goes about the same distance for me - too far to gap between 4i and hyb. I play a 21* and get that 230ish carry. I also play a 4 wood over a 3w for the same reason. If you can play more loft do it - makes it easier off the deck. Holds green better.

Excellent video, how would this affect a golfer with a slower swing speed, I have the yips when it comes to hitting fairway woods but hit my hybrid pretty good.
