I got mine about 6 weeks ago. I've done nearly 2000 kms in Sydney and am averaging 4.9 litres/100kms or 1000+ kms per tank !!. I realise that it will depend on each individual driver and your location as to what your actual fuel efficiency will be but if you use the 'pulse and glide' strategy then your consumption will be excellent. It's very smooth to drive, the rear suspension is so good over bumps and the media is very good too, intuitive and fast. Unless you're rich think about whether you really need the AWD and the extra weight because that will affect fuel effciency too. I bought the Elite FWD in shimmering silver and i reckon it looks better than the N Line.

I’m currently in a 2016 Hyundai and when I went for a test drive it was an unsettlingly huge improvement in driving experience. And I was driving a trim level with les options than I will get. Bought the top spec Highlander diesel awd brand new a few months ago. I’d waited til I’d heard the specs of the hybrid facelift model before making the decision. Although the hybrid makes an extra 35kw, it’s down 66nm on torque which I think is more usable in a medium suv. Also the hybrid gets the 6spd auto whereas the diesel got the better 8spd torque converter auto? Yeah the hybrids fuel economy is a bit better but where I am in Sydney diesel can be 20-30¢ cheaper per litre. I think if you can get a diesel Tucson runout deal that’d be the best buy, I got a demonstrator with 40km on it for $53k drive away with a runout deal and free on road costs. Only thing I’d prefer from the facelift model is the new infotainment screen but not worth the extra ~$12k.

Great review. Your review of the new MINI Countryman was one factor in my decision to buy one. 4 months in and with it’s glitchy software, I’m having second thoughts and even test drove the new Tucson Hybrid last week…. I liked it. Of course, that doesn’t mean it will be immune from software and mechanical issues but I believe this is the 2nd gen of this hybrid? Amazing that the Australian version gets a longer wheelbase!

Thanks Angus. Sorry to hear you've had issues with the Mini! So much tech packaged in, I'm actually not surprised. But yes, there has been a hybrid like this in the Santa Fe before, but not in Tucson (in Australia, anyway). Thanks for commenting!

Yeah they haven’t had the best start in terms of showrooms and management of the flow of traffic. And also after sales. But they’re in cahoots with a big dealer group and they won’t stand for failure.

I seriously doubt BYD will be sold in NZ much longer. Unfortunately, all EV, including Tesla and Phev, have tanked here. Most EV sellers have slashed prices by up to $30k! Only a single Ora Cat has sold this year! And now they are practically giving them away. I remember when we were looking at getting a BYD Dolphin that the dealer said BYD would never discount, well that was true until sales of BYD dropped below 10 nationwide per month. Now they have slashed prices. MG so far has not really dropped their prices, and it shows as just 3 MG4 sold in June!

So, a panel of ANCAP “experts” deem we need the bing bongs, which we no doubt pay for. Then, based upon everyone turning them off a manufacturer has come up with a simple way of turning off the very systems required to pass the new safety standards so manufacturers can still get 5 stars even if they technically don’t pass with the annoying “safety” systems disabled. Ken Bruce has gone completely mad! Nice review as always. 👍😎🇦🇺
@gregb1599

The Australian ANCAP does not require those so-called safety systems. It's part of the European safety rules. It's just Australia. Hyundai/Kia wants to annoy Australians!
@marcusgeorge1825
@marcusgeorge1825 4 ай бұрын
@@gregb1599 So you are one of many that say “I’m going to the ATM machine “. 🤣 As ANCAP stands for Australasian New Car Assessment Program. Without these new safety systems it will only achieve a score of 4 stars. It’s also fantastic that a car manufacturer also realises the stupidity of these to comply to OUR standards (not European) by providing a simple way to deactivate them each time you start the car…
@gregb1599
@gregb1599 4 ай бұрын
@marcusgeorge1825 Well, you are wrong as the ANCAP does not require those systems "yet" its only required in Europe but I guess it's cheaper just to have them fitted as standard!

@@marcusgeorge1825If you bothered to research it, which of course morons do not! You would see many cars that achieve only a 4 star rating in Europe get retested and achieve a 5 star in Australia!

@@gregb1599 We’re NOT talking about Europe! Your choice of word speaks for itself. At the moment we have the 23/24 ANCAP testing protocols. 25/26 are tougher again and it’s these that manufacturers are already implementing. They just need some time to fine tune the “bings and bongs”. Perhaps you need to stay away from the last one of the two.

I really hope Hyundai can introduce the 1.5T Mild Hybrid version on both FWD and AWD configurations to replace the 2.0NA and the old 1.6T engine. The hybrid and upcoming PHEV versions may still be too expensive for some buyers, and budget-focus buyers deserve a fuel-efficient option from every brand, which results in introducing a mild hybrid engine as the best choice.

You say that you can feel it shifting gears in EV mode. I have the hybrid and I can guarantee that you can’t. When in EV mode, the ICE isn’t engaged so it’s not shifting through gears. I think you’re confusing with sport mode where both the ICE and motor are being used to maximise performance.

you left off one alternate the Haval H6 Hybrid,its in the same price bracket and has everything this has. On the range itself,that 2l engine thats in the base is a gas guzzler,as is the the turbo,people chose the diesel because it had the best fuel economy,now you have to buy a top of the range hybrid which is even more expensive making the time to recoup the expense of the hybrid even longer.

It's just too expensive as hybrid. Also the reliability and longevity of the hybrid drivetrain is unknown compared to the proven Toyota system. I wish they offered the entry level petrol as a 2.5 or a turbo 1.6 with a 6 or 8 speed torque converter auto. As it stands the base drivetrain is terrible... absolutely not enough torque so the 2L revs its head off at the slightest provocation.
