@sten3604 жыл бұрын
Pretty much nothing occurred during development. It's all rumors and fan headcanon to create an explanation as to why the game wasn't as good as they wanted it to be. The devs have stated that the project was executed exactly as planned and they're satisfied with the result. They had a limited budget to work with and used their resources in a clever and efficient way. From the perspective of a lot of gamers, it's laziness and recycling, but from the perspective of devs, it was smart game design.
@h.knight4 жыл бұрын
@@sten360 actually it is an unfinished game and 3142 Art Book basically confirms it with the book explaining how Dante's Devil Arms were suppose to be Bosses or how even the story is unfinished as shown in Devil May Cry 4 Novel. I loved DMC4 for the longest time, but even i can tell you that this game felt like a lot of unfinished potential. There was so much that could have been done with multiple playable characters, the story could have been interesting, but for some god forsaken reason Capcom forced Itsuno and his team to just rush the game out. If this game had released in February of 2009 instead of February of 2008 like it did, i can bet you the game would have been amazing. For 10 plus years I was angry that they decided to reboot the series when there was still so much potential with not just the original DMC series but with Nero himself. But now, i ain't gonna loose sleep over it. Because DMC5 is what happens when you let Itsuno and his team finish their work and put out a quality title. Pretty much everything you criticized DMC4 for doing, 5 fixes and improves on and then some.

Assuming you haven't played DMC5 yet (or are doing it now), you're in for a treat! (No spoilers, just in case) - Enemy design is much fairer and the different playable characters each have their own unique, viable methods of fighting them - Levels are streamlined to have no overly obnoxious platforming sections or annoying puzzle sections, while being open enough to encourage some light exploration and rewarding you for doing so - The Proud Souls mechanic introduced in DMC4 is gone. Now red orbs are your only currency for buying items, skills, etc. Nice and simple while also making for more engaging decisions to make during your playthrough now that everything uses the same resource. And so much more. Based on your video, I think DMC5 will be right up your alley. You'll love it.

they took a lot of steps back though -moon gravity and easier jump cancelling which makes the mechanic feel a bit more shallow and easy -no reversals or guard flying despite reversals being available in the demo -v being an absolutely terrible gameplay design -not allowing you to play through any mission as any of the characters despite mods allowing it -making nero's arms breakable instead of allowing you to switch between them for more depth it's a fantastic game but still inferior to 4 gameplay wise because of all of these setbacks

@TonicSpirits4 жыл бұрын
@@igorz4582 Filip Vadas was referring to healing items and Holy Water. I agree that DMC4 has a higher skill ceiling, but definitely not a better overall gameplay experience. Not having reversals or the same inertia properties that allowed guard flying is certainly a bummer for the top 1% of DMC players, but the game still has unyielding amounts of depth that is more accessible to newcomers and veterans than ever before. And as much as I miss guard flying, I understand it not being there since it was very likely an accidental quirk of the physics engine in DMC4, like lightning in a bottle, that would be almost impossible to get again when you're building a new game from the ground up with the brand new RE engine. V isn't *terrible* gameplay design. It's basic compared to Dante and Nero and could benefit from more development, but at the end of the day you can still get through levels just fine as him. Not saying you have to like it (I certainly don't), but he plays like a schemer behind the scenes rather than an action hero like Dante. Nero's arms not being switchable is a pretty hot debate, and I definitely would love the ability to freely switch, but think about how that would make 90% of players play in the long run.They'd be encouraged to never use the Break Age mechanic, and I'd argue the depth would actually suffer because then decision making wouldn't be a factor. The obvious right answer would be to switch Breakers almost *every* time rather than choosing between keeping your current Breaker even if it's not ideal for your current situation, taking the risk to charge its Break Age at the risk of losing it if you're hit, or just using Break Away to quickly get to your next Breaker with low risk at the cost of not using your Break Age.

As always. Great review. Some historical context: Over time, I met a lot of people in the Devil May Cry community, particularly style players, real combo fiends. And if there's one thing that was pretty apparent about them, is that they all liked DMC4. Its physics, tech and skill ceiling were all perfect, and it made for one of the most complex action games out there, so much so that DMC4 players would have difficulty adapting to other games, or at least without complaining about its design choices. In a way, it's the Smash Bros. Melee of Devil May Cry and for many, the pinnacle of DMC combat (At least without mods). As for Nero, yeah, people didn't like him at first. I was always fond of him, as I am for all "Young narrative foil to older, experienced previous protagonist" (See: Raiden, Rock Howard, etc...). But people didn't like how angry he was, maybe even uncool at times, and felt threatened with him seemingly replacing Dante as series protagonist. That sentiment lingered till right around when we got the reboot. People started to appreciate Nero's honesty and angsty teenage rage versus reboot Dante's... just being an asshole frankly. Right now he's widely loved, save for some haters here and there. PS: Fighting Blitzes as Dante is a taxing experience. Until you realize you can actually ROYALGUARD the recoil damage from hitting the electric shield, at which point it becomes a really fun challenge.

I think Agnus pretty much explains the Orders motivations in the cutscene before his fight with Dante. The order is losing influence since more and more people are turning away from the Order due to a lack of belief in the demonic threat that Sparda once sealed away. By opening the hellgate, the people are confronted by the truth that the demons are indeed real. By then destroying the demons with the Savior, the Order would present themselves as... Well... "the Savior" of humanity and not only regain influence over their former members, but expand it over the whole world, since everybody would then follow the Order. I think that is a very solid story. Also I think Nero is a member of the Order, since he was raised by Credo's and Kyrie's family, since he was an orphan. I have to admit, however, that they should have made all of this a bit clearer.

Why Nero is in the Order and his story with Kyrie and Credo is all told in the game! If you pay enough attention to it (the story), check little details (like Dante watching Nero from the roofs in the beginning), read the unlockables' descriptions, and put everything together, you have a very competent tale to say the least... and it's actually very fun to discover yourself. Gameplay and quality of life improvements in DMC4 are INVALUABLE. So good they make it really hard to get back to DMC3... and impossible (in the bad way) to get back to 1 and 2. It sure feels this game was planned as something way bigger when you reach the second half (and its a known fact nowadays), but the way the team solved every limitation and came out with a superb polished product is always amazing to think about. Now, if we talk about the Special Edition: Man... It's still not perfect (what is perfect?), but I spent almost a hundred hours with it, and having played every single DMC game through the years, I can firmly state that it (DMC4: SE) is my favorite of the series. I just can't get enough of it! It made me really sad Lady and Trish weren't playable in DMC5 (the biggest bummer!) because they're unbelievably fun to play in DMC4: SE. Especially Lady, with all her guns and explosions! Wish they took the "story" part of the alternative characters to the next level, though, because they (including Vergil) are only there "just because", with nothing to add to the story more than a couple of cutscenes at the beginning and the end. But that's how it works since DMC3: SE, so no big deal. Anyway, DMC4 is a great game with GREAT moments and DMC4: SE worth every single minute and penny.

As far as dealing with Blitz's as Dante, you can Royalguard right as you hit them to cancel the damage, so setting up charged hits with Gilgamesh and then Royalguarding on impact allows you to safely melee them and break their shields rather quickly, this is probably one of the easiest ways to deal with them on DMD. Alternatively going into DT makes E&I and Coyote automatically fire charged shots, which wear the shield out pretty quickly, same with cloaks of the Mephistos and Fausts, Twosome Time with DT active can let you quickly deal with the cloaks of entire groups of Mephistos (since you often encounter them in groups). ADDENDUM: As for Chimeras... well DT Coyote breaks them relatively quickly, but honestly they're an absolute chore to deal with when they latch onto Assaults, pretty much the only enemy I hate fighting, except for when playing as Lady, since Kalina Ann solves most problems very quickly.

So I might clear up some parts of the story since I’ve been replaying this game. The Nero part of the order is to be with his girlfriend and even if hates them, he doesn’t want to displease them. Secondly, throughout the levels for the three bosses, there are these gates that’s letting demons roam free and being used as research. Now, the one with the god part is the standard “this person who’s extremely powerful wants to find/obtain the power of another legendary person(demons, gods, etc) and use it”. That’s all I can really say from the story part since it didn’t confuse me that much unlike others and I’ve been playing the other characters in their storyline with Vergil’s oddly taking decades before Nero was even thought of and Lady/Trish having their story take place between the Nero/Dante story. Now the whole Vergil part of the story is that it takes place before dmc3(yet he still has his weapons Beowulf and Force Edge), then DMC3, DMC1 and then back to here because of the enemies and the Yamato. Thought to clear up the story a bit.

The Dante being not able to handle stuff is literally on you. The styles are what you need with him and one of the most important thing you need to use is the royal guard. For blitz armor either omen or 5 pin-ups and ecstasy or shotgun shot. (also DT burst does a lot in this game). What this game does exceptionally well is that there is multiple ways to deal with different opponents and how the game puts you in situations where you have to come up with something new. Either with smaller places or combining annoying enemies together. For the end you are absolutely correct that the levels and puzzles are horrible... i only like this game because it feel like i'm always finding new stuff and getting better at the "gameplay" and what i mean by that is that sometimes when you play a difficult game you learn enemy patterns rather than how your character works.

A couple things on the story. 1: Why is Nero working with the order? He isn't. Some guy came in and shot Pope Francis (not his real name). The pope is sort of a town leader and now their leader is gone and demons started swarming the city. They literally don't have the time or the men to spare to track down Dante at this time. This is where Nero comes in, his home town is in chaos and was the only one who was able to hold his own against Dante. He's the only person in town who can chase Dante because everyone else is helping the evacuation or fighting demons. Plus, I believe it's mentioned outside of the game that Nero does some need work for the order from time to time. Nero does it for the money which kind of makes sense cuz it seems like Nero is the only atheist in a religious town.
@theskepticpirate1564 жыл бұрын
Secondly, the popes plan. Yes, that was his plan. Flood the town with demons and then save the day. It's a concept called "inventing a problem and selling the solution." Companies do it all the time.

Saying that Reboot Dante is more like Nero extends past his personality. Reboot Dante's sword swings are more wild like Nero's, his moveset includes the ability to pull himself to enemies/enemies to him, and he has several of Nero's sword moves in his own moveset (though spread out across multiple weapons), like his more aerial combat manovers, they even have the same names. I think it's quite possible that because a lot of people were likely to have played DMC4 but not finished it, or played only DMC4, the reboot team decided to make their Dante a middle ground between Dante and Nero gameplay wise, so they don't alienate fans of 3 or 4 completely by picking only one.

There's a difference between making fun of something, and being an outright asshole. That was honestly the other reason why some of us just hated him (among other things)

For the dice minigame, always use the devil buster or high roller to flip the dice. That way, the dice will ALWAYS land on the face that pointed upward when you flipped it. This means you can pick the exact number of moves that sends you through the minigame the fastest + avoids traps. If you don't trust your reaction speed, remember that the dice flips through its 6 faces in the same sequence every time. If it goes 1-4-6-2-5-3, and you want a 6, just wait for the 4 and get ready. If you're playing as a character other than Nero and you don't have the devil buster, try that character's equivalent of High Roller (so backward + default melee). I think any attack that lifts enemies straight into the air will have this effect on the dice. The dice minigame will be A LOT faster and far less painful if you do this.

Because I love the unused lore and setting of DMC4, I'll yak about it here for a bit: Fortuna was ruled by Sparda in medieval times as an independent city-state, during which time he founded the Order of the Sword. But he was never in it for the power, so he eventually put the city back in human hands.... and then they proceeded to worship him as a god. By the game's time, the Order is completely entrenched as a local religion, and controls basically every aspect of the citizens' lives. Thing is, modern tech and ease of travel and all that stuff threatens the Order's hold on the island. They banned guns to maintain the populace's dependence on their knights, so Nero had to go and build his own (in a cave!! with a box of scraps!!) because he believes killing demons fast is more important than tradition. So the Church had reasons to be deeply concerned with preserving their relevance. Enter Sanctus. Sanctus is a damn good depiction of a clinical narcissist. He's charismatic, attentive and kind and he seems so deeply passionate about the welfare of those around him. He can convince you that he has the loftiest intentions while being mega suspicious. And he believes his own hype. He wants the populace to love him even more than they do, because he loves them *this* much and that means he totally deserves it. He walks the walk and he talks the talk, but as the game progresses he sheds every little mask until he reveals that he has, quite literally, no beliefs and no convictions other than his own right to do what he's doing; everything he did was for the sake of controlling how people regarded him. The people regarded him as a priest, and he wanted them to regard him as their Savior. To be someone's Savior, you have to Save them. And if there's nothing out there to Save them from, then, well...... you ever hear those news about a nurse or doctor messing with a baby's incubator in order to rush in and sound the alarm and be a big time hospital hero? Crazy mom forcing daughter to pretend she's got 10 different incurable diseases for publicity and sympathy? They call it Munchausen Syndrome. So, you know, convince good people like Credo that opening the gate is part of a great plan for the benefit of humanity, and stride out there to publicly Save everyone from yourself. That was it, that was his plan. I love it. It's people I know, writ large.

Like I get it you don’t like the new music that’s fine you can have your opinion even if it’s kinda just a bad one, but don’t try to back it up with “facts” you pulled out your ass. Next you’ll say you thought dMc’s story was better than 5

I'm gonna drop my control scheme for Nero in DMC4 (it's slightly different in 5 but pretty close). Although I'm sure most people watching won't need it, you never know lol. Melee - Triangle/Y Gun - L1/LB (Charging w/ this allows you to do melee combos without much restriction) Jump - X/A Bringer - Circle/B DT - Up on D-Pad (You could use L2/LT to...pull your Devil Trigger) Lock-On - R1/RB (You could switch lock-on and gun if that feels more natural) Exceed - Square/X (I feel like there is a bit of a delay having to press L2/LT all the way down and it might cause you to just barely miss an Ex-Act or Max-Act window. Since using this button in both 4 & 5, I feel like I hit Max-Act a lot more often)

The controller with extra buttons is a great idea. I was 12 when dmc4 came out. That whole summer I worked on mastering style switching with Dante.

It really is. The skill ceiling may be lower, but I don't care. Everything else is so much better

That's why I was never able to bring myself to finish the second half. Going through it all as Nero is such a slog with all the monotonous bull to go through. Now that I've reached Dante's half a few years ago I'll probably go through it (playing as Dante in 5 actually got me excited for it) but god that game is so painful to go through. And it's not like those things actually add to the ambiance like DMC1's actually do. Even the water sequences of DMC1 I feel are not half as bad as some of the stuff you must do in 4 ! What I'm not excited about is the enemies. DMC3 has some annoying enemies, but 4 just has too many throw-resistant enemies. Most of them usually have some strategies with Nero, usually centered around the Devil Bringer, but if Dante doesn't have an easier time juggling with them, I can't imagine they'll be too fun !
