I went to a catholic school where boys could wear shorts or pants but girls had to wear skirts or jumper dresses, even in winter when it was cold! I'm otherwise pretty traditional 'feminine' but i begged mom to ask the school to let me wear shorts or pants too. They allowed me to and I was legit THE only girl in the 'boy uniform'. BUT it's what I was most comfortable in 🤷🏽♀️

Same thing happened to me. I went to a catholic school and every Friday we had to wear our "mass uniform", which was pants, white shirt and vest for boys and dress ( or skirt, white shirt and vest) for girls. I always hated dresses and skirts, so in 4th grade I finally got the courage to ask my mom to schedule a meeting with the principle. We went and my principle let me wear the "boys uniform", which I wore the rest of the time I was there. In 6th grade, one of the 8th grade girls wore pants, too, and an office worker tried to dress code her. The worker gave up, and for the rest of the year some of the girls in that class wore pants. I was really happy that some other girls wore pants too because it made me feel it had made a change. Those 8th graders were the only other ones who wore pants. Edit: I came out as trans at the end of 6th grade (i forgot to mention that)

CONFESSION: I'm not just a KZbinr. I have another full time gig as well, (and I keep what that is private.) At my other job they require uniforms. I wasn't exactly out as trans at work, so for the longest time, believe it or not, I wore a dress and heels on the job! WOWZA. Recently however, I mustered the courage to ask if I could wear the suit and tie. This might not seem like a big deal, but *as far as I could see* no one else was expressing in a gender non-conforming way where I am employed. I would be the first and only *that I knew of. (I'm sure I wouldn't actually be the first and only, but whoever the other people are, I have yet to see or meet them!) I was so afraid that I would face judgment or pushback, but I am happy to announce that I didn't! In this vid, I explain the steps I took in order to make wearing "the men's uniform" a reality for myself :) ALSO, amino is dope - ■ Join Trans Amino: aminoapps.com/invite/URFHNICR1V ■ Join LGBT+ Amino: aminoapps.com/c/LGBT-1/join :)

I don't know why you would have a ''feminine'' and a ''masculine'' uniform. Just get something formal for everybody. They do the same job anyways, no? At my job it has always been black pants black shoes and tied hair if long. the top changed a few times, it was a white shirt (the ones with the buttons), then a black shirt(also the ones with the buttons), then a black shirt (but a normal one, no button, plain), but it was always the same for every employee. The shape changed if you picked M/F but the outfits are exactly the same.

Hey Ash, thanks for sharing all this. From my perspective as a nurse, and a guy, I find this interesting. Back in the late 80's here in Australia, there was a big push from female nurses to be able to wear pants at work for all sorts of excellent practical reasons, but some staff still wanted the option of the old fashioned dress. HR got creative, and simply removed all reference to gender in the uniform options. Of course a couple of guys turned up in the pinafore dresses for a laugh, but soon you had people simply wearing what was their most comfortable choice. It also meant that trans staff had no problem from HR wearing whichever uniform option they found more appropriate. The other thing too, was all references to gender were removed from the toilets....they're simply marked "staff toilet". The only time you see shocked stares is when someone who isn't staff uses them!

yeah, listening to this video, I just died a little inside about how it seems like Ash looks at the world in such a binary way, and doesn't consider that the whole men vs women uniform is bullshit regardless of if you're trans or not, and should be done away with in all companies bc it's sexist and bullshit and encourages dumb gender roles. like, do ya think your coworkers enjoy being forced to wear heels? why not fight for real change. this issue isn't about being trans or not. if you didn't want to out yourself to higher ups, you didn't need to, and could still have been able to wear the "mens uniform" because a company ACTUALLY CANNOT tell you no (within most countries) or that would be discrimination regardless of whatever anyone identifies as
@trinitylivingston12865 жыл бұрын
I think it's dumb to have to wear a dress in a work environment because you sometimes have to do more physical work like lifting boxes (even in the office sometimes), have to run around the office doing errands (sometimes), have to do dirtier work sometimes, and some of the other employees/customers can be creepy pervs. Plus, I think you should be able to choose whether or not you want to wear a dress.
@emeraldgypsyheart5 жыл бұрын
Jessica Scott I’m definitely NOT girly and when required to wear a “uniform” in an office I wore what was professional and non-gender defined even some women in my former career wore the “woman’s” “uniform”; dresses/skirts. Me I wore slacks and nice tops sometimes (depending on who was scheduled to drop by) I was required to cover my forearms as I have tattoos (none offensive or inappropriate in any way) but that was the only “exoticn” to the required professional “uniform”. I think as long as employees are dress professionally gender distinctive “uniforms” should be optional. But that’s just my two. Ents. Lol

this is totally not the same thing, but where I work, the men's shirts and women's shirts are different. Not super different, but the women's shirts are shaped differently (makes sense, since most women have bigger hips) but they also have short sleeves and the collar doesn't have real buttons. It stays undone and it goes kind of low on me and I don't like it. The women's shirts are also just not designed very well and I don't like them. It never even occurred to me to ask for a men's shirt. But when we were all getting our new shirts and I expressed my annoyance with the women's shirts, my manager said "Why don't you try a men's shirt then?" and I was like: "Oh! that's an idea!" And the men's shirts are sooooo much better and every time we get new shirts I'm always going to ask for a men's shirt. Sometimes people are like: "Um, that's a boy's shirt..." And I'm like: "So? it's better." and they're like: "oh. ok." But I'm super glad your experience with this went well!

@ Bode Collins, Uhm no actually, Ash is non binary, which is neither male nor female, and so when uniforms are that gendered (male and female) it can often times be difficult for non binary people to conform to those options. If you watch more of Ash's videos, you see that they generally wear masculine clothing, so it would make sense for them to wear what is comfortable for them to work, and that would be a suit.
@anaespiral32653 жыл бұрын
That's cool. Be proud of Ash for standing up for... well, just HERSELF. She is backing sexism so up front that I don't understand why don't you see it. In our world, when we women stand up for our right to wear comfortable at work as men do, WE GET FIRED. Period. Ash didn't fight to break the status-quo. She strengthened it. Are you sure you want to be proud of such a selfish person?
@esther-corinna3 жыл бұрын
You shouldn't have to be male and disclose your identity in order to not wear a skirt and heels. I think it's fine to have a feminine clothing option, but it's not okay if that is the only option for women. I have days when I love to wear a dress or skirt, but more days when I don't feel comfortable in them. I don't wear heels and couldn't even if I wanted to because I'm very prone to lower back pain and injuries to tendons in my legs and feet. But I shouldn't have to use that as an excuse to be allowed to wear flat shoes. You shouldn't need any reason not to wear a skirt other than ''I'd rather wear pants''.

To those worried about bathrooms at work: I am of the firm opinion that if I can clean that bathroom, I can use that bathroom. If a customer/co-worker/whatev musters the audacity to ask why you appear to be using that bathroom, you can always say it is because you are an employee, using an available bathroom so that you can return to work. It can be scary sometimes, but having good little excuses can help diffuse a situation should it ever occur. Thankfully a lot more places are not as bothered, but I know well some places are still backwards in this thinking (I'm in the Midwest US...)

My feet hurt just thinking about it honestly. And like, heels damage your body long-term. Eek. My mom's job has a non-gendered uniform and tbh I think that's the best choice if you're going uniform. Everyone wears the same shirt and pants (and as long as they're black/work appropriate, you can pretty much swap in your own pants) except managers who have a different shirt. Maybe a more fancy environment is different but that heels thing just kills me.

This kind of policy (not the part about uniforms, but policies that can be viewed as discriminating against sex pertaining to appearance & uniforms) seems illegal (?) but maybe not where you reside (?) ... as I am sure you aren't the only person affected in the company by this very 1950's policy.

Whew I am so glad that basically all of my prior jobs have been in hospitality, where the work uniforms (if we had them) were all usually a t-shirt or maybe a polo or button down shirt with the venue's logo/a sponsored drink logo/whatever and were typically unisex because they were made for comfort and functionality in a physically active job, rather than corporate with strict gendered dress codes. I work in trade retail now, and the company has purposefully inclusive policies, including uniforms, so even though I transitioned while working there it was never an issue to management or other team members - The only uniform change I needed was to grab some new shirts in a larger size coz I bulked up so much on T xD Really makes me feel lucky to not have had that whole concern on top of everything else in transitioning. Nice reminder of the small things that are so easily taken for granted :) Also - Congrats on booking your top surgery, Ash! So happy for you, and can't wait to see videos about your experience with it! Getting top surgery was one of the happiest days of my life, certainly one of the best things I've ever done for myself, and I still feel blessed every day when I see/feel my own body. This makes me so happy! My work have never once had a problem with me turning up wearing trousers and a shirt every day, thankfully. I think at this point (and after me speaking about it passionately for years with no prompting) they just accept that I get on and do my job; the fabric that covers my fleshy parts doesn’t really affect that!

A few questions i have: 1. Do you think the work place would have been as accepting for a MTF clothing switcheroo? 2. Do you think you might go genderfluid with the clothing expression? i.e. sometimes go with the dress, sometimes go with the suit, sometimes mix&match (dress+tie+blazer could look so good if they are the right cut/colours). 3. Can we see the uniforms pls (as long as that won't impede your work life/reveal the company)? PS congrats on the upcoming surgery!

This is the first of your videos that I have watched, but in case you read the comments... :) I don't know precisely what variety of trans person you are (bigender, genderfluid, non-binary, trans dude, etc.), but I wanted to say that I think you're really cool. You speak with a feminine-range voice, but you kinda talk like a guy; you have a nice androgynous boyish look; you're funny and display a vibrant personality. People like you are a demonstration of why diversity rocks, and why the world is so much cooler with visible LGBTQA+ people. I'll watch some of your other stuff. Thanks!

Even though you said you're pronoun indifferent (is that claim still valid?), it kind of made me feel weird when you used "she" to talk about "work Ash". But it was "good weird" because it was a cool, subtle way of emphasizing the fact "work Ash" was not who you are ;)
@HeyThere0056 жыл бұрын
YEA YEA YEA. "Work Ash" is probably binary, so while I am pronoun indifferent, "Work Ash" would probs only go by she/her. I FELT WEIRD doing it too. B/c when I use she/her for myself, it's in a fluid non binary context, but this she/her was super binary...and not-right-feeling. Glad I wasn't the only one who felt that!

This is really similar to a research project I did for my MA regarding same-sex attracted teachers where I found higher levels of avoidance of giving anecdotes related to their partners and higher levels of worry about job security and rapport with classes if their sexuality came out compared to that of their straight colleagues. It's about sticking to the status quo and not wanting to rock the boat. I found similar things in the literature to what you've said, people will not come out because they don't want to be seen as gay or associated with anything like that as it could affect career prospects. And about the last thing you said about 'facing all the questions' this was something else i discovered in the literature as to why people don't come out. They feel as though they suddenly become a cultural representative usually forced by others. So if i come out to a class who has never met a gay person before, suddenly they have all these questions and I suddenly become a representative for a whole community which is obviously not the case. Yea, lots of parallels. Glad it went okay for you, and people make mistakes and faux pars but it usually doesn't come from a malicious place i'd like to think anyway.

I think we all have a "work self" to a degree, it's necessary in most jobs to remain professional while on the clock. For example, I wait until my boss walks *out* of the room to scream "THIS IS MY HELL"

I said this on your coming out video, but it applies here, too - it's refreshing to see similar experiences. We're all unique, but many of us go through the same channels or trials or paths along the way. I -HATE- having to put on my mask for work (my uniform, my cismale persona, et cet), and your experiences reinforce that what I'm feeling isn't an isolated occurrence.

I've only seen a couple of your videos so far and I like them! I'm glad this went well for you. As for "blending in", I can empathise with that. I'm disabled and I can't hide it really. I can still walk a little, but it's very painful and makes my muscle spasticity worse. But, that hasn't stopped me from trying to hide it despite the horrendous pain it causes, in the hopes it would help me to get a job and appear "normal". I wish I'd had your attitude of just being me and showing employers who I am. I have been to interviews in my wheelchair and only got one job with it, disappointingly. But, discrimination against us disabled folk is still TERRIBLE! All the best! :)

can i just say that your hair is the coolest! i would love to be able to rock a 'do like that! also separate note, sometimes i really wish there was a non-gender-specific word like "they" that is definitively singular, because sometimes the use of "they" makes me think we're talking about multiple people or the arbitrary "They" people often use
@HamazingKayliee6 жыл бұрын
Wyntrr_End there are other neutral pronouns besides they like ze
@thatjillgirl6 жыл бұрын
I have sort of the same issue. First there's the plural/singular thing, but then on top of that it feels like I'm saying that someone's gender is unknown, not that they are gender nonspecific. Like I know that I have used the singular they lots of times in my life, but it's always been in a context of not knowing who the person was and by extension not knowing their gender, or like a hypothetical person or something. So when I use it for a nonbinary person, I feel like I'm saying that I don't know their gender, and that feels off when I do know how someone identifies. Now obviously, that is my own problem, not someone else's, and if somebody wants to be identified with they/them pronouns, then that's what I'll do. But yeah, I wish that singular gender neutral pronouns like ze had caught on a little better, or that we could do what Sweden did and officially adopt a singular gender neutral pronoun into the English language. Oh well. I work with the language available to me, and if they is gonna be the gender neutral pronoun of choice, then that's the one I'll use.

I don’t find this about they/them pronouns but I do find they feel kind of... distancing? I guess maybe because normally you would use they in the singular when referring to someone not well known or not in the vicinity? Then again, I haven’t really experienced needing to use they/them pronouns in the trans*/nb/genderqueer sense with someone in the room so maybe it wouldn’t feel like that after putting it to use irl a few times.
@trashchicken48826 жыл бұрын
Amy McRae once you use it a lot it really doesn't feel that weird. you just use they and it means a singular person when you say it. never had a problem saying it resulting in confusion on anyone's behalf really and it comes out naturally now when referring to someone who's gender I am unsure of or i know is non specific. Such as "they said such and such" or "oh yah they are coming to the party too." the people im talking to know I'm referring to a singular person and it flows smoothly. it does help if someone you know uses non specific pronouns i guess but honestly no mix up happening in mine or my friends heads whatsoever when we use the pronouns.

The same day I came out to my husband as gender fluid I came out to my supervisor in tears. I asked her what I could do to get the me s uniform and she said she would take care of everything.
