Yesterday, I ran my first marathon. The London marathon 2024. I had an injury that meant I could only do 8 weeks’ training. Really appreciated your message here. I felt really disappointed with my 4hrs 40 time. I’ve run half marathons in 1.50. But must remember that it’s an accomplishment to finish in itself. And I didn’t completely ‘bonk’, even though I cannot walk today!!! Thanks Philly. You are the best!!

Congrats on 10th, and thanks for the break down. Although we're very different runners, I can relate to your disappointment when you saw the clock tick over 72:00. At Farnborough this year I broke 90 minues for the first time, but on the watch on route I was sure I was on for 1:28:xx and when I eventually came in at 1:29:15 instead of being over the moon with a massive PB I would never have dreamed of a year ago, I was really annoyed! It's weird how runner's brain works, clutching defeat from the jaws of victory eh?! Anyhoo, it's been great to see you push on and improve over the last year, and I find your positivity and honest appraisals of your races really inspirational. Keep up the good work!

I had a half marathon in February. As I approached the line, I saw the clock ticking up 1:34:50, 1:34:51, 1:34:52. My fastest pace all race came in those last few seconds, and I made it to 1:34:59. As the difference between a 7:23 or 7:24 PB, it was meaningless. But man, I think that I would have been a LOT less happy with my result had I been a second slower.
@SuperFuzzyDunlop
@SuperFuzzyDunlop 9 ай бұрын
Yeah but it's ultimately that mentality that will drive you to get faster. As long as you keep a sense of perspective and do feel a sense of pride at how far you've come, it's normal and healthy to be annoyed at things that go wrong. There's more than enough room in our heads to feel the positive and negative simultaneously Not that getting faster is the be all and end all, but for many of us we would lose a lot of love for running if the self competition element disappeared
@rayamos1398
@rayamos1398 9 ай бұрын
@@SuperFuzzyDunlop Agreed. Like Phily, I checked myself after the finish at Farnborough because I had hit my actual target, and I could get 1:28 another day. Flying in the face of Phily's advice at the end of the video, I'm very much time orientated, but it's helped me get PB after PB over the last year. I'm never going to get close to bothering the elites so position is all but pointless to me, but having a tough but acheivable time-based target really helps me focus in a race. On the trails, where I'm never going to get PBs, it's all about just making sure I look up and around to enjoy the views. 😃

Thanks for the break down of your race, that's super interesting and you make it relatable even though I could barely keep up with you on a bike. I'm not really competitive but I've noticed how little things can cloud over things I could be proud of or happy about. For my next race ( a 20k), my goal is to do a tough race. I always run too conservatively because I'm afraid of going too hard and blow up. So yeah my aim is to trust myself a bit more and go hard. Not sure I'll be able to to it, we shall see. You hit it directly, when you say "time not important, only position important" ("Fifth Element" inspired). As I get older it's been hard to force myself in to that transition, getting a different mindset. I still fail at it, much to often 😀 It would help if more races had clear age-grouping... I had a race this spring where I came in as no. 72 (! sigh...) and I got so totally depressed, because I wanted to be among the first 30 or at least 50 runners. And then discovered I was a very clear winner of my agegroup by more than three minutes. But I still want to compete as much as I can with you younger runners, more than half my age 😀 As an amateur I do not have sponsors pushing for results and exposure but can 100% got for "run for fun, race for fun". But we all know, that running is more important than life 😉

To many people TIME is everything & I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. I battled for years to get a sub 18 5k. It was this target time that got me out In the dark, the rain, the snow. Got me down the gym , changing my diet, buying best shoes, quitting alcohol & getting enough sleep. Yes It was an arbitrary time but my quest for It was what motivated me. 5k Pb - 17.47.

Super shoes have also boosted my performance. The Adidas Adios Adizero 3 are my go to shoe for a 5k.

@@lionheart4552 alright 90 km per week. I'm actually just starting to do distance, like higher up....the half marathon and all. And lol physique wise I'm totally different...around 5 foot 7 or so and 62 to 65 kg almost always. I've done a 19 min flat 5km but it was way back and am gonna try for a 1 hour 40 mins to 1 hour 45 mins half marathon this October. Not doing much distance per week though as I don't have easy access to a good track, and also I'm pretty busy. Also I'm not too keen on suddenly increasing mileage and get injured, which is very likely to happen considering I've never done much volume than this. I'll peak at around 58 km in August end and then stabilise and then slowly taper from then. And yea I guess super shoes would help a lot but that's something I'll try later down the line. Maybe once I get close to or start targeting 1 hour 30 mins for the half marathon I'll get a pair. How do they feel though, comfort wise and all?

Racing without a watch or with a tape on your watch can be a good idea to learn to RACE the people around without focusing on time. Thats how we did it 20 years ago and we’d be faster or slower depending on how the race around us went. Time mattered but not as much, we would also do Pb’s without focusing on doing them 😂, not to mention how we would learn to listen to our bodies a lot more. Lovely video Phily

The three hour target for the marathon is an interesting one. Watch Tim Grose's statistical analysis. Those who succeeded in getting sub 3, in general ran positive splits, but with less than two mins difference between first and second half, whereas those failing to go sub 3, often collapsed majorly near the end (so bigger positive splits), when they realised they would not get the sub 3 goal. It shows the power of the same target, to positively influence some, and negatively influence others, depending on which side of the line they fell under.

You did very well with a PB and top 10 finish ahead of some strong athletes with international championship experience, given the circumstances. While the course in Berlin is certainly suitable for fast times, with the heat and some wind on that day it really wasn’t ideal conditions to set records. For comparison, even the men’s winner Daniel Ebenyo started out with splits at world record pace, then faded pretty badly and not just missed the WR by a lot, but also the course record, and probably any other personal time goal he had in mind. But he still managed to hang on to first place in this race. And as you said, trying to beat the athletes on a level around you is what ultimately matters in any competitive race.

That's what I tell myself after Boston last week (humblebrag😛). So far doing a good job of being very happy with having paced it decently, having held on for dear life till the finish, moving up in the field, and generally having a blast. (And running the last 2 miles faster than a KZbin personality with a PB an hour below mine.🤭) Rather than focusing on a 7min positive split.

A couple of weeks ago I ran Sheffield Half for the 5th time. Training had gone well and I was fairly confident I could break 80 minutes, which would be good going on a course with 300m of elevation gain. Unfortunately Storm Kathleen made an appearance that weekend and there was even an update from the organiser that should the race be called off we'd be informed by 6:30am. Garmin recorded the wind at 44kph (27mph), but I battled on and came through the finish 23rd at 1:20:54 PB'ing by over a minute. The lesson is if you want to break a target, pick a flat race 🤣

You mentioned after Copenhagen that you'd like to have your own pacer at the next marathon, how would that factor into shifting your perspective about timings and numbers? Would the plan be to do a couple of training sessions with them before race day? The whole pacing thing seems a bit random, you often hear about people being subbed in on the day to do it. I really expected you to mention that 72:00 is the Olympic standard for women's half marathon. I know you are focusing on 2028 and are not going this year but I have to think that was a significant mental barrier. You did talk about focusing on time but this feels like it would add extra weight to specific times when you don't want to focus on time.

I highly doubt you are using Better Help for therapy. They have a miserable reputation with questionable ethics. You lose credibility when you take sponsorship from disreputable companies.

If you are saying that it was 20 Celsius at the start, then you would lose 5 seconds per mile compared to optimal conditions based on studies, so 66 seconds faster with optimal weather. Therefore even the time was great! Adding to this, the sun came out, during the race adding to the heat, which might be the reason for the drop of after 10 miles. Be proud!

That’s a nice idea, but practically not helpful at all. You can’t control the weather on olympic marathon day. Your time is your time. Own it

But on race day, everyone will lose 5 seconds pr mile. So in comparison to the competitors, it does make sense. But also when comparing your overall fitness, and performance on race day, it make sense.
