@@similingun7985 It's very hard to not make it seem forced, and I'm not going to pretend I'm able to. It's very easy to go too far the other way and make the protagonist too genre savvy. I see a lot of comments calling the driver an idiot for picking up the kids that "didn't belong" but seriously...? Depending on what type of horror you’re going for breakin for not breaking the rules can work. If it’s traditional generally a rule needs to be broken to endanger the readers POV, but if it’s psychological you can create a sense of “are these rules even real”

for this one I think you can figure it out. Mr Harlan made the rules, - protect the kids is pretty standard - he would be able to recognise his old classmates and realise they shouldn't be there. - learn the kids names helps you learn which kids are alive cause the dead ones only appear when it's raining or the bus is almost empty. - The mirror and lay down rules probably happened by looking and realising the dead reflections and by a kid getting a dead seat mate.

This used to be my job, which made the story significantly worse for me. Whoever wrote this should have done a bit more research. There are two huge things in regard to being a bus driver that were not taken into account when writing this story. 1. You are given a list of every single student on your route. This leads into the biggest flaw in the story. 2. YOU DO NOT PICK UP ANY KIDS WHO ARE NOT ON YOUR LIST. YOU DONT KNOW WHO THEY ARE. YOU DONT KNOW WHERE THEY ARE GOING. THEY COULD BE WAITING FOR ANOTHER BUS TO GO TO A DIFFERENT SCHOOL. Doing this can land you a kidnapping charge, ESPECIALLY when its done the way it was here. Children usually listen to adults, and a child who is not on your route will likely STILL get on your bus if you tell them to get on. If you want to be "helpful", like yhe man in the story, you call dispatch and tell them the issue. Picking up kids that arent yours will get you fired and possibly jail time.

When I was in elementary school, I remember several big fiascos happening where a kid got on the wrong bus and effectively went missing, sometimes for hours. Once afterward, they held an assembly and basically hammered it into our heads that we were NOT to get on any bus except the one we were assigned to, for ANY REASON unless school staff specifically told us (or our parents) to do so. This story was cute and I see what it was going for, but that's a HUGE inconsistency with how bus routes actually work.

That was probably the most well written "rules" stories I've ever heard. Perfectly structured, creepy and very satisfying. Especially when read by the best narrator 👍🏼😎.

Love the protagonist just not realizing that he should have a list of who goes on his bus, for one, and two, that every kid at a bus stop might not be standing there for your bus Patrick was really holding it down lmao

I know its not just me but I think I have an answer to the horror protagonist quandary. If they weren't dull or slower witted there'd be no spooky. Because consequences take dumbness... Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk

While true, even the most competent person can be tricked or slip up. Those are the ones I like, not the "oh gee, I'm sure the rules are just a prank! What's the worse that can happen in this extremely spooky setting?"

They need to mess it up in a non-idiotic way, this guy was keeping a moral high ground because he sees the situation in black and white. With unique and supernatural things like this, you listen to the damn rules. The present kids were aware of it too, but he ignored them. I'm just glad the deceased kids were freed by Harland, the GOAT of this story while Joey remains a Beta.
