I was one of the engineers assisting with some of the testing for the Hummer EV. At one point the lead test engineer said he needed my help to open the hood, since it turns out the hood is both power operated and software controlled. If the auxiliary battery of your Hummer EV dies, it will prevent the hood from opening, preventing you from accessing the dead battery, basically sealing itself inside. Additionally, this battery cannot be charged nor accessed anywhere from outside the vehicle. A bit like James May's Tesla battery issue but far far worse. There is a manual open underneath the dash, but it has to be yanked on really really hard with a wrench. I chuckled to the lead test engineer saying "doesn't this seem like it would be a huge problem?" And he replied "yeah, it isn't the first time this has happened".. but seeing this made it to production I guess they didn't care. Don't know why absolutely every feature needs to be electric, sometimes those good old mechanical bits should just stay mechanical, even on the cars of the future.
@mrbob95562 жыл бұрын
That battery should be able to recharge from the main battery with a bypass switch. I'm sure it gets low after being in the factory parking lot for who knows how long and flashers, radio, lights will contribute to the injury.

My new GMC AT4 was dead in my driveway the first day with 180 miles on it. It was stuck in what I call “accessories mode”. Fan was on at full speed could not turn fan down or off, could not start engine and could not shut the It off or get it in neutral. Dealer said it was a bad battery, well yeah the batter died after it sat stuck in my driveway all day with the accessories on. The dealer put a new battery in the car assured me that fixed the problem, a few days later check engine light is back on. 3 weeks later check engine light has been on every day, dealer said I hit a bird and took out a shutter on the front grille and he was so proud to show me the missing shutter, The service advisory was confident that was the problem and would order the shutter assembly. He was a little embarrassed when I asked if he ordered enough to fix all the new AT4’s on the lot, he looked at me confused when I said all his trucks on the lot must have also hit a bird as they were also “missing” the same shutter vane. I then explained that the truck never had the Vane and it was designed that way. I should have stuck with the ugly Tundra, but one more service appointment and I qualify for lemon law.

How much coverage did he give to F-150 owners with junk transmissions? How much coverage did he give to all the guys with Ecoboosts that were going through timing chains and had brake failures due to junk master cylinders? He covered GM trucks with vaccuum booster failures but when F-150 owners had random brake failures due to junk master cylinders, that got swept under the rug, even after Ford lied about the breadth of the issue and it later turned out that they lied about how many trucks built 2015 or later had that junk master cylinder.

The Window stuff was to calibrate the auto up/down fonction. This is something you have to do after taking the battery off on most cars. This is the first vehicle I've seen that actually ask you to do the procedure on the dash.
@timwiley18442 жыл бұрын
I was getting on here to say the same thing. I think it's silly that they have you do it right away when there are other problems going on. There should be a skip option.
@travisb91302 жыл бұрын
@@timwiley1844 there was. It says dismiss for each one right on the dash.

Yukons, Corvettes etc require the window to be indexed and displays it on dash.

All GM vehicles with Auto windows do this when the battery is disconnected. My 14 silverado does this as well.
@johnleeuw30222 жыл бұрын
there is a skip option. it said (dismiss) for all of that window calibration . they just had a bit of a helmet fire. and clearly were not familiar with window calibration which has been a thing for a long time. all they had to do at that point was hold the pedal like it said.

This is exactly the scenario that happens when your the first to rush out and buy a new production vehicle.

You better wait for a model to be at least 2 or 3 years old. The time statistics comes out

Looks nice. Will make great curb appeal at your house. I have a Lexus LS430 it's the fifth one I've owned last one had 517k miles on it before it was crashed into. Never once had a major issue with it. Gas ⛽ is gold.

I have no desire to own an EV, any EV. I’ll keep driving my older truck. I love that thing… gets me where I need to go and it’s paid for!!!

TFL is king. Thank you for showing the good, the bad and the ugly with these new EV's. That is really scary what happened. I am glad you guys are safe and sound. I hope GM takes this seriously and deep dives into what went wrong.

Thank you for validating that continuing to drive my 1987 Mercedes with 300,000 miles on it remains the common sense alternative to an EV. You both demonstrated far more patience than me, I would have asked the tow truck driver if he had an angle grinder I could borrow for a few minutes because the $%^&* hood **IS** opening right the F now. Then I would have done what you did, get the thing to the dealer and go home.

The no easy access to the 12V battery when its dead seems to be a common design feature of EVs in general.

Every time I listen to you about electric vehicles it makes me more convinced that we're just not ready to abandon the internal combustion engines.

Coal powered vehicles aka EV's are only viable when the government forces you to buy one or it tries to bribe you to buy one. No thanks. If they were any good, people would be pounding down the doors to buy them - instead we have failure after failure, power outages and unicorn dreams.

Then you missed the entire point that he was making about the issue being the computers controlling the motors which is a concern for both EV's and ICE.
