Hey Phil! Thanks for all your uploads mate. I love your channel but to be honest, personally was getting bored with PS 5 fixes...so I LOVE what you're doing now. Great stuff mate. Obviously it's your channel for you to choose what you post so good luck for the future whatever vids you post.

I enjoyed watching that video repair, smoke and all. I would love to see the radio repaired to its former refulgent self again one day! Thanks for sharing.

I did this a couple years back, See an old Workzone radio on ebay for £5, so i bought it... It requried 4x D cell batteries to power it, SO i just fitted a DC to DC buck converter, and bolted on a Milwaukee m18 battery adaptor :) Been running flawless on a m18 battery, for quite some time now :)

You want to make sure the voltage for the charging port is correct as it could be positive in the middle or negative that the first mistake he made. Just gut the internal parts and get a bluetooth board with amplifier and battery and you have a portable speaker box as it not that hard to make as well you can add usb charging ability to that box or turn that into a battery powered light box for emergency or camping the possibilities is endless. That what I did to a e-scooter that was far gone with the controller and parts of it broken. So I converted the 36v battery to connect to 12v to 80v switchable led lights and volia have myself a portable lights that lasted more than 24 hours of light at night

The transistor you desoldered is not a transistor is 3.3v voltage regulator
@HoussemHmila9 ай бұрын
am1117 is 3.3v regulator .apparently it is getting hot becuse the main controller have a short that explain why the lcd no showing number or letter and making those sound .
@tyronenelson91248 ай бұрын
No the 3.3 volt regulator was bad.
@dfear8 ай бұрын
AMS1117 are a very common voltage regulator. Most transistors are 3 pins devices. This one has 4. The tab is usually connected to the middle pin.
@tyronenelson91248 ай бұрын
So it has three connections then.

I was working on my washing machine pcbs and a similar voltage regulator LD33 was getting boiling hot. Turned out it was the microcontroller sorting to ground (Vss with Vdd) however the chip itself wasn't getting warm at all. When I removed the microcontroller sort was gone.
@tyronenelson91248 ай бұрын
When a DC jack is plugged into the DC socket the actual DC sockets internal terminals disconnects the ground from the battery and engages the ground on the dc jack, and by the looks of things, that mosfet is triggered when the DC jack is plugged in which then automatically dis-engages the battery.

Thermal cam from the start I think. Then inject the right power at the right places, then more thermal. Should have pinpointed what it was.

Hello, Like people pointed out, 1117 is an LDO regulator. Maybe if you had injected 3.3V, you could have diagnosed this further. Now I am afraid you totalled the board. Anyway, I assume that square chip, which was getting hot, may be MCU - if so, just replacing would not work, because MCU needs firmware, typically in integrated flash memory.

@patzik19109 ай бұрын
Those ams1117 ic’s are voltage regulators, so that’s why it was getting hot, it’s normal. They are used very often, so you will definitely see them more often in future repairs. This one said 3.3 so it’s a 3.3v regulator. Putting 12v on it’s output will definitely let out the magic smoke. Oh well, this is how we learn😂
@tyronenelson91248 ай бұрын
They are not meant to be getting that hot.

Hahah magical Phil lol 😂
@JonnyFix9 ай бұрын
Test the transistor with diode mode or component tester if you have one. Thermal camera shows heat but you didn't say how hot they were getting so it will look hotter than the surroundings for any temp higher but that doesn't mean bad and some things run warm normally. Transistor likely being used as a voltage regulator feeding the capacitor above it check resistance to ground there. Don't give up yet!
@apalua8 ай бұрын
That transistor was a 3.3 volt regulator. I am sure of that😢

Those power jacks are only 1 pound for 50. When I find a corroded jack, I replace it. It isn't worth the hassle of trying to figure out if it is, or isn't the corroded jack.

Ahh, the classic. Fix it until it breaks. How many of us have been there....
@tyronenelson91248 ай бұрын
That transistor is or was a 3.3volt linear voltage regulator and you CANNOT inject more than 3.3 volts to its output, So you basically fed 12 volts into the 3.3 volt rail of the radio and fried the man mcu! I thought you knew all about this lol?
