Hey Scotty. I'm a dad with 4. I would recommend putting the baby on the passenger side because if they are behind the driver it's really hard to see them from the drivers seat. On the passenger side you can easily turn and see them. Also, getting them in and out the passenger side is far safer, so having bubs near the door will be easier to put them in and out of the baby seat. Especially when it's raining. Congrats on the new little Scotty. 🎉 having kids is the best thing I've ever done.

I have to disagree. I run a 4wd set up as my daily and when bub is in the car he is generally behind my seat. That way the missus can see him from the passenger seat. If for whatever reason I do have both of the boys in the car, I'd still prefer to pull over and deal with any issue than risk turning around and taking my eyes off the road. Each use case is different, but generally when bubs is in the 4wd the whole family is in the 4wd. Otherwise it's just me out on adventures. So it makes far more sense for the passenger to see the baby. If that makes sense

Gidday Scotty, I've got the same one, 4 months and 4500 kms, love it. On a few things you noted, you've already got 33" tyres from factory, the pizza cutters are actually very capable off-road. I modified 79 dual cab steps for full length side steps on my Troopy, can reach roof racks, I got a generic centre console online $40 works a treat, good arm rest height, same goes for door armrests $70, you don't have to pay $300 for the one commonly touted they are not worth it. I've done heaps of long distance driving on factory seats with sheepskin covers, comfy as. I used a mirror mount reverse camera it includes front camera, both can record video. Lots can be done on a budget to put to your roof pop top. Enjoy they are awesome.

They're not factory 33s, they are about a 31 on the 7.5x16s. 33s fit great with a 2" lift

Too many bogans are ripping up the bush with their modified 4x4s and thinking getting back to nature involves generators and flood lights. Then they wonder why NPs shut trails.

Hey mate toyota fitted the anchor points above the rear doors on my troopy. Saves alot of rear space. We have 2 kids both under 5. We got our troopy the week before my daughter was born. Yes it's a challenge with 2 doors but I wouldn't change it. The kids bloody love it

That’s a lovely motor mate. I’ve had 9 Toyotas, there bombproof. She won’t let you down. Keeping things simple for such a vehicle is better, less to break, less to go wrong. I like the retro look, it’s boxy & more practical. Win, win Scotty, well done mate. Best wishes, us lot in England

Good onja, Scotty. You deserve her. But I advice you to add only what you really need. Rust proofing, sound proofing the floor, a roof rack and a second battery for the fridge (not connected to the car battery). Then use her, see what she can do for you and add bits and bobs when you feel you need it. This is not a matter of money, it is a matter of complexity and weight. And as long as you do not lift her, two doors are fine too. And there is no need to lift her, except your ego needs it. It is way more important to keep her ultra light. She will serve you well, I have one on order too (4-door, $91000)

Wicked, I have built my own 79 over the last couple years and would definitely recommend the centre console, arm rests on doors with cup holders , speaker pods for 2 front doors and sound deaden the whole floor!! Completely changed the feel and makes the seats a lot comfier having places to rest your arms!

Unreal mate welcome to the troopy family! Suits you down to the bone. What a weapon! I have built two troopies now only because my first one got stolen. As for the anchor points you were asking about we had them fitted from a mob in Perth I forget the name of the place but it was really easy to find with a Google search. A piece of advice that might interest you in regards to having a young family. I was also thinking of installing the third door but I never ended up going ahead with it and honestly it's wasn't even the slightest inconvenience lifting my young fella into the car seat (especially if you're tall). Now that he is 2 years old he climbs into his chair by himself anyway. One other piece of advice I wish I was given when building a troopy as a family tourer is don't listen to negative comments people might have to say about the troopy. It is the perfect touring rig for our family and we really haven't upgraded much at all. Looking forward to seeing where it takes ya.

Yeah fuck the 3rd door off mate. At a guess, you'll only be lifting the young one in and out maybe 100 times in total, especially if it isnt the main family car. If you spend $10k on the door, that's $100 per use...Just to avoid moving the seat forward. I reckon, save your coin and spend it on the seat up in the back

Hey Scotty. Congratulations on buying a Toyota they are the best. I have a 200 series and three kids. When I go on my solo trips I've got drifta draws in the boot which are the same height when you fold the middle row seats down. Then I use some ply over the top and a big thick tri fold mattress 100mm thick. It's a very good setup to easily convert back to a family car. I'm sure you could do the same in your troopy with draws at the same level as folding your bench seat. Cheaper than a conversion and still keeping options open on how to you to use the vehicle.

Love it! Congrats. What if you just build a box brnch storage system or nothing, and use a Thermarest Mondo King to sleep on? Use that in my Toyota Sienna. Works great. Then nothing is permanantly altered and it still remains a family hauler

Congrats on the new rig mate. Lots of fun to be had with it for sure. Have you thought about building a drawer system that matches the height of that bench seat and using that folded down (Not up against the drivers seat)? That is what I have done in my Pajero to keep the car a 5 seater for daily but it gives me a double bed when camping. I have a 30L Drawer fridge build into the system but you could do an upright easy enough if you only want to go a single bed. You also have all underneath it for storage of a 2nd battery, tools, camping gear etc etc. Also I thought maybe a console fridge for the front. If I was ever to buy a Landcruiser it would have to be a Troopy.

Awesome choice mate! I got my 2.3 76 series back in September when they first released and my one bit of advice is order your bar work as soon as you can! I live in remote WA so bar work is essential here. I ordered my bull bar, brush bars and rock sliders back in December and i'm still waiting for delivery and install nearly 6 months later! The fleet and mining sector have already made a dent on after market parts so get in while you can so you're not waiting for ever!

Scotty I used to work for famous car rental company and they had lots and lots of Toyota commercial vehicles. All the hiace 12 str buses had baby seat anchor points under the floor vinyl and look out for single or 2 person seats in the hiace 12 str buses at the same height as your existing bench seat. If I were you I would in stall a 2 person seat just in case your family gets bigger and I hope it does

be sure with insurance to take out additional glass cover for the windscreen. These new troopy's now have the ADAS camera in the glass and it get get up over a grand for a replacement glass and calibration.

Thanks Scott great move, I'll bet a slab it won't let you down...anywhere. Ive had an 80 series for 24 years now and love it more today than when I bought it. It had 70,000Km on the clock being the last of the 80 series of 1998, now its 380,000 going strong. The 'truck' carried myself, the wife and our 'lil dog on an epic trip in, around and through Oz. On, I'll argue some of the worst tracks in Oz. Much of this time we were dogged by rain, so the old girl worked a bit harder than many. Meekatharra to Carnarvon in 2004 when a 'late season tropical' low swept the goldfields. It was 1530hrs when the police said if your going go, go or you will get stuck!! We drove all night through a 4x4 drivers wet dream. I was a little worried with swollen rivers like the Gascoyne becoming more impassable but pulling a tough off road camper she powered on through the nigh and driving rain. Great driving lights by IPF which have never moved from the day I set the focus, strong mounts, and arrived around 0600hrs in Carnarvon, where we had to 'stay put' as roads N and S were cut. We JUST got through as the road was destroyed by a grader rescuing some that had made their move too late, the road was closed for over 3 weeks the grader was stuck as well. Anyway my comments are the $85k went on a tough and RELIABLE vehicle and that's what you got. I would recommend the following, get a solar panel fitted, get IPF driving lights with HID conversion, use OPTIMA Blue batteries, main and deep cycle never let me down (the cranking battery is dated 31/12/2011 still running as of now, the other 2014 deep cycle, died 1 tear ago. Both with solar input. Piraña battery isolators, a decent inverter with 240v outlet, mine would run a 600w Hitachi angle grinder if needed but 2000w is not unreasonable these days and lastly I can strongly recommend Lovell Automotive and Suspension for the 2" lift with Platinum springs and Koni shocks. This truck drives beautifully loaded or empty after 100,000 kms over many insane roads. I can add that my experience has encompassed 10years as a field operator in and around the Simpson desert and all the tracks, cavernous holes and corrugations contoured like concrete gutters. Best of luck with the 2 new babies and safe driving. Take care.

Hey Scotty, try Techsafe automotive seating Hervey Bay QLD for your single rear seat. Also if your replacement seat has isofix attachment points you won’t need anchor points on the vehicle. Paddling and fishing we have aplenty so come north for your seat 😉

G'day Scotty, congrats mate and I reckon you did the right thing going for a base model to customise for your particular needs. I'm sure you're aware, you can pay so much more for unnecessary bells and whistles. No question; bullbar and winch; ...... dont forget the ability/knowledge to winch in reverse. Segway into dual battery, perhaps solar as well ? and with our network phone coverage, or lack of it, a good "CB" mostly UHF these days, and/or a sat phone. Long trips, as a fellow tall boy, .... with ya, seating comfort, + center console/armrest a high priority. Rubber to the road and rims; for sure very important, though personally I wouldn't go 'mad" pricewise, especially if you're doing a lot of highway K's and dirt tracks in "fairly" reasonable condition ; ) Suspension; maybe an upgrade there, I'd be doin a "shipload" of research on your particular vehicle, before doing anything though. Single rear seat, yep, though side door; I wouldn't, I believe that's quite a mod and ..... infants dont stay infants forever ; ) Rooftop tent, croc country for example, yeah ok ; ) but personally I dont like 'em, can be just as much mucking about to set up as a ground tent, a pain to get in and out + you lose all the storage potential up top. A side mount tent, or even just an awning, is well worth having IMO. Even though you've quite a tank there, keep in mind, ...... extra weight adds up "very" quickly. Anyway, just my two bob's worth, I'm sure whatever you end up with will be fit for your purposes, all the very best of luck with it mate. Cheers Duke.

Awesome new ride! The only thing I would recommend is that you stick to ATs and not mud tires. Mud tires are very uncomfortable on the road, loud, bad on fuel economy. All terrain light truck tires are very capable for on and off road.

Nice new rig, Scotty!! As a dad with a 2 door Jimny, you'll be fine with 2 doors getting a kiddo in and out! My daughter and I do adventures often, and it's quite fine! Given that it isn't the main family car, just leave the doors. Switching out the bench seat for a single seat is s good idea, though!
