I Bought The MOST CLAPPED Out Duramax At The Salvage Auction. Miles Unknown!

Here's another weird one for you guys! I bought this 2002 Duramax at the auction a few weeks ago. They did not list miles and the odometer was not lit up, a common problem on this generation of GM trucks. The auction had a video of the engine running, and a relatively cheap buy-it-now price. I buy diesel trucks pretty often and I've been after a running LB7/LLY Duramax to test FICM's in and this one fit the bill. It was cheap, so my expectations were low but I had to know the mileage. So I pulled the cluster to try to get the mileage from it and WOW, I did NOT expect what I found.
Why am I doing this? I own and run a full service auto salvage business called Importapart. We buy wrecked, blown up and otherwise unwanted cars and trucks, dismantle them and sell the parts we can while recycling the rest.

For those of you saying it’s reading in KM, it’s not. The odometer on this truck is calibrated in miles, so when the scan tool said +999,999km, it wasn’t lying. The hour gauge I don’t believe however, I don’t know how high they read until they roll over. Edit: turns out the hour meters can easily be reset, so that info is useless 🙄

The odometer said approximately 653,400 miles, and the hours meter said 8400 or so. That works out to around 77 miles for each hour of running time; That is a little far fetched in my opinion. Possible, but a bit far fetched. Here's the thing: Computers don't lie, so either the gauge cluster or the computer has been changed. It doesn't matter; The truck is junk that you can use to test FICM's. Good luck, and get that 928 out of your garage and on the road dammit! I was born at 7:51 AM by the way...

I have a GM engine hour meter with over 15000 hours on it. they don't roll over until after 99999. if its saying over 1m km, I believe the cluster when it says 653394 @21:07.

I'm halfway there with my work beater. I have put nearly 100k of that on it at 90+mph long distance driving. Getting a restoration this summer. Motor is still perfect, transmission still perfect. I fucking beat on this shit like it owes me money. Been through literally 20 other trucks, while this thing just won't stop.

I too am happy that I don't live in the rust belt, the cars that get rusty here are usually 40+ year old tin can grade econoboxes or cars that are extremely cheaply and poorly built where the manufacturer skimps on even the most basic forms of rustproofing.

I work at a gmc dealership and a couple of years ago we had a 2017 duramax with 768,000 on the odometer. That was the most I've seen on a light duty truck

@@trevorgsell1827 Sounds about right. All the RV factories are in indiana, and they get delivered to every corner of the country. KZ factory to where i work is right around 800 miles. When its busy i see the same drivers 2-3 times a week making trips back to back. So yeah, 5000-ish miles a week. Hotshot drivers dont use trucks to death. They use them until they are worn out and get new ones. We have a regular driver whos been doing this for 20 years, and was a big rig driver. Hes gone through six or seven pickups, all of them way beyond 500k.

I've got an '04 LB7 that has 521,000 original miles on it and it still runs great. It's sad to see this truck in this condition but hopefully it can give of itself to let other like trucks live on.

I think the LB7 was about the pinnacle of reliability for the Dirty Max platform. It’s impressive how long the oil lasts in a healthy one if you’re into doing oil analysis to set service intervals.

My current service van is a 2013 Chevy Express 2500 with 305,000 and it still runs and drives very well. All original drivetrain. Oil changes once a month (about 3,000 miles). The care taken of a vehicle says volumes.

My buddy bought his 2013 Chevy Express 2500 in 2015. It has a 4.8L engine and a 6 spd. automatic transmission. The transmission just went out at 190,000 miles and the tranny shop charged $5000 to rebuild it. He is now back on the road with his electrical contractor business.

It’s FANTASTIC, that it lasted 22 years; AMAZING that is still works after over 653,000 miles; and, of course, it is MOST EXCELLENT, that it is going to serve a functional purpose in your shop! Take that ranch hand bumper and find a good powder coater/ sand blaster but the more stuff you got to blast n coat usually the cheaper you can get it to fill the oven kinda thing.

Yeah, injectors were an issue. That's been fixed. My LB7 had the water pump replaced just once.

@@jimrossabrena7955 About 20+ hours in labor, lots of allen bolts for upper and lower valve cover removal. Water pump requires front crank hub removal which is torqued on to like 600ftlbs or something stupid. LLY+ moved the injectors out of the valve covers which saves a lot of time

I worked in a shop in Fl. I made a nice living reflowing the solder on those clusters and replacing stepper motors also the later ones had soldered in light bulbs did those as well. Ford truck clusters suffer the same failure. The boss was sending them out before I started there. It saved him money and the customer a lot of time. I enjoy your videos I get to see the innards of engines I would never otherwise see.

Lets remember, this truck did not fail, it was still driving!! The wreck forced it off the road. My winter beater is a 2008 Silverado Z71 with 5.3 DOD and the lifters still work at 325,000 km!! it has barely had any issues and still makes 275 kpa oil pressure warm engine and in gear. That being said, I change my oil at 5-6000 km, use full synthetic with quality filters and grease the chassis twice a year, and lube brake caliper sliders.

I'm jealous of your truck. I bought my 2012 Sierra Z71 at 107k miles. 5.3L with the DOD. It consumed oil and eventually seized a lifter at 120k. I put a GM reman engine in it (updated piston skirts and such). 20k miles later it is doing alright. But once the warranty expires I am going to delete the AFM system. Love this truck, but the AFM is not desirable.

Nice old truck that served its previous owners well, would probably still be racking up miles if someone wouldn’t have made it into a rear steer model. Duramax’s are hard to beat. Engine sounded good man. Crazy. I have an Equinox with the 2.4L and I’ve always taken care of routine maintenance and I am just shy of 200,000 miles which is a lot for that engine. Runs great and have never had a problem due to lack of maintenance. I replaced the timing chain about 150,000 and routine maintenance (brakes, belts, lower ball joints) and check the oil. I don’t change it at the recommended 7500 miles. I change it around 4500-5000. Use good synthetic oil and follow maintenance and even a 2.4L Ecotec can go the distance.

That circuit board is known to have soldering defects; quite a common problem for that era. I spent way too much time soldering things to get it working on my friends 2003. Honestly, cheaper to get a used one.

The Obd2 plug under the dash was for the bully dog computer. replug it in and it should work. Then you should be able to read the speedo for the mileage when it was unplugged!

I feel for the people that have to drive 30,000 or more miles a year. That's an average of over 80 miles per day EVERY day to reach 30,000 miles in one year. I know that there's lots of people who have to drive that much or more to just get to work. The farthest I've ever lived from my employer is less than 10 miles. Having to drive long distances to get to work takes a lot out of your paycheck. 😮

Nice!!! Yeah, I mean, Wisconsin, Northern Minnesota, North Dakota.... Northern Michigan.... The truck will rust out with a perfectly good running engine in it.... My favorite work truck I ever had was right in your wheelhouse.... A 2005 Chevy Silverado 2500 4x4... 6.0 V8. Super nice running truck. It had the usual problems, but it started & ran & burned no oil.... It got redlined on an inspection because the frame had become more of a see-thru kind of experience..... Great truck though.... Ohhh, the adventures that truck went on..... Heh heh heh heh heh!!!! I think it had 325k on it when they dumped it.... Ohh, the Wisconsin winters... The remote sites a baja-ed in & out of... the deep snowpiles I rammed to get in a site.... That truck was a champ. Lemme tell you younger guys & gals something.... If you get a job, where there are company trucks, company rides, what have you.... You don't necessarily want that brand new ride.... You get that brand new truck, people will be watching. First scratch shows up on that truck, someone will call the boss. The cab is not being kept super neat, someone will call the boss.... Other people on the crew will be envious, they will be crappy about it, and piss & moan behind your back.... You don't need that aggravation.... You have an older truck??? Nobody cares. Cab is a mess??? Nobody cares. You got a new scratch?? Nobody cares, it was already scratched & dented.... Someone needs to borrow a truck?? Nobody will want to borrow your old crappy truck, they'll leave it alone, they'll leave your tools & gear alone, they'll just leave you alone, which is ideal... they catch you smoking or dipping in the truck?? Nobody cares... You drive screws in the dash to mount your gps?? Nobody cares. It's perfect. Seriously, if it starts, runs, has nice heat, nice air.... That shifter on the floor works, puts you in 4WD... Drive it. Drive it and keep your mouth shut.... You've got it made.

I wish I worked there for you and your question is the Bully Dog Tuning kit/Tuner is a great thing if it was installed correctly and it is functional. It's not only a engine tuner, its has functions for gage and other ways to check and maintain the functions/perimeters of engine, transmission, exhaust temperature, boost pressure and much more. You can also change the tunes and transmission setup for more/less, shift points, and more depending on the model and programming the other owner invested in the electrical all in one gadget. Hopefully they tried to take some kind of care of ensuring that it was full of the essential fluids and lubricants. Good luck Eric and I will say it again if you ever decide to expand your business, you can look me up, I have 40+ years in now and I am able to do what you are doing, tires, mechanical, service calls, tow truck operator, body, fabrication, paint, and even the heavy machinery repair for fork lifts, loaders, skid steers, and more. Always wanted to move to Missouri after driving around through the state in my travels 🥾 when I was younger and had to travel across the country a 4/5/6 times. You have a great evening. My main reason is that your state is a great place to be able to get to anywhere else in the country due to central location and the fact that you do what I love to do and it looks like you could have been able to get a place that anyone would be proud to work at and a boss that would be great to work with. Thanks again for everything you do and thank you for sharing your work and help with some great information on things that you don't see daily to make sure people are informed and putting them in a position to help others that are not sure if they can but with some of the things you show people who are on the fence helps them out and gives them the guidance of what they are looking at and they are able to get in and get their hands on it and do what they want and need to do. I could nicely patch up some of those vehicles that you could sell but the rust that gives you issues, I could economically patch up and ensure that they are happy with the vehicle to buy it due to holes being fixed with minimal Bondo and w😢 last more than a season or two due to shotty/sketchy work and repairs. Safety, quality and economic feasible work always puts customers first and a company that shows that quality work is done and they have something that they know they got their money's worth and you are not going to lose money 💰 on work and tie up the shop with something that that should be done within reasonable price and time frame. 26:16 I wish I knew that you were going to get and sold computers that you repaired or will repair for the customer. I just did a couple that I thought was a couple of gouge projects, but I needed then and didn't have a choice. Well this old man in the middle 50's+is going to pass this along and watch a couple more of yours while I enjoy some dinner that I just got done cooking as I watched this one. My son-in-law has my 2000 Ford Taurus which I sold to him in 2012 with 65000 miles on it now it has 260000 miles on now. He did regular maintenance when needed and is still running well!

1060000 km. Not bad at all. Your question about the modern trucks: in Australia the railway companies operate 4WD pickups ands SUVs (Toyota Hilux, Land Cruiser & LC Prado). They drive the roads alongside the track every day keeping on top of railway safety and maintenance. These railway lines go way out into the outback. The vehicles are racking up insane mileage, mostly on rough gravel roads. You can buy a three-year-old railway vehicle with 500,000km from the local dealer. These vehicles were serviced thoroughly every fortnight, and all the filter, lubricant and cooling service intervals were halved due to the dusty conditions. Because it can get so hot out there, breakdowns were to be avoided at all costs. So whilst vehicles are high mileage and cheap, they are a really good buy because pretty much all the wear & tear items like wheel bearings, steering bushes etc have all been replaced at least once. Service history is recorded in detail. There’s at least half as much of that mileage again that can be achieved quite easily. After that you’re probably in for a bit of work like pulling cylinder heads and intake manifolds etc etc to clean them up.

I'd say that truck had a good life. Those clusters suffer from bad solder joints on the boards, i've fixed countless odometers on those things. I had an 01 1500 Silverado with a 5.3L and it had 330k when I SOLD it. I still see the kid who bought it drive it around from time to time. He loves it.

My 91 Chevy c1500 4.3 truck made it to 768k, original engine, trans was replace in 2002, was my grandfathers originally until he passed away a few years ago, I sold that truck because I needed something with a little more power, I regret selling it though. I did not like my 99 suburban though, I sold it for a 94 Suburban with 170k on it, I expect to get well over 200k out of it, old TBI 5.7 don't have enough power to kill itself, but reliable.

I'm pretty sure you can get the milage and engine hours from the PCM and/or BCM, you just need a scanner that has the ability to access that data. GM Tech 2 is the preferred scantool.

I live in Georgia and we drive these trucks till the wheels fall off one of my lb7s has right over 400,000 miles the other has 350,000 I take good care of them and they are absolute work horses aside from the injectors being a pain in the ass to change as long as you can get past that an LB7 is a great diesel truck for the money and no emissions to worry about I've got my eyes on an L5P but I will not be getting rid of either of the current 2 I have

I happened to find another channel with a video title of "Scania DC12". They had totally disassembled a truck engine that destroyed almost everything. Block, heads, pistons, cams and cam shaft, rods, crankshaft & oil pump.

My last car was a 1998 Lincoln Town Car, I traded a $300 laptop for it, it ran like a champ and had 286,000 miles on it. It was a taxi in Portland OR and I put 2 front window motors in it and fixed a water leak into the cab. Interior in near perfect condition.That was in 2017.
