Me personally, I don't excessively listen to music, mostly I just listen to the Minecraft 1.18 soundtrack when I do my work, and I know that it can have these effects on people. That's why I don't look for a good sound system in my first car (preferably a 1966 Ford Mustang Convertible). I use it mostly because it calms me, and that is how it can be to many people. While this specific one doesn't really apply as much as the others to me, it still really helps. It helps me understand why my older brother blasts the loudest, most irritating songs at level 25 on his car's speakers. I used to judge him for this, and now, I understand why. Next time I ride somewhere with him, I'll try to understand that that's just how he deals with stuff. Thank you, Jak, and don't stop making these videos.

I usually take what you say at face value and consider that my own students might be experiencing something similar. But I feel motivated to respond to this video because it's the first time my own experience was so vastly different from yours. In my mid teens, I remember the voice in my head - not voices in a crazy way, but my own voice, my own inner anxiety - would get loud enough that it interfered with my waking train of thought. I listened to loud music (RUSH, primarily) to drown out what was basically the incessant screaming of my adolescent mind adjusting to the noise of world filled with extrinsic stimulation - it saved my sanity and even my life... and for many years, I thought my experience was normal.

Dude, the timing is so exact. I’m still surprised how you experienced the same thing as me. For me, I listen to rock music on the bus ride to school and home every single day ever since the school year has started, and only recently have I started to notice that it’s acting like a drug for me (I also thought of it as a drug, just like you). Whenever my earphones are out of battery, I instantly get very mad. I literally cannot ride on the bus without music. Then, today, your video popped up and changed my perspective. I have learned today that it’s not about the music itself, it’s about HOW and WHY you use music, and let’s just say I don’t use it as motivation when I’m on the bus. This video has only supported my ongoing thought of quitting listening to music every single day on the bus for no reason, to stop getting the dopamine I seek every morning and afternoon, so that whenever I do listen to music, it’s for a good and productive purpose. If I can’t quit listening entirely, then I’ll probably set schedule at least so it will save my ears too. Now I know you have experienced a similar thing too, so I am ready to put an end to this and use music as a tool and use it for the good and not the bad. I have only recently discovered your videos, but you have no idea how implementing the things you include in your videos is starting to help change my life. Thank you so much Jak, keep up the great work, sharing your experiences and changing lives, and I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors. I’ll be awaiting for your next video ❤️🙏.

Honestly, I was a bit skeptical initially cuz a lot of self help content creators would often talk down on music quite a bit. But after watching this, it actually kinda makes sense. It really just depends on why ur doing it. Sometimes its actually a lot more motivational (my run times can drop by 2 minutes with music) but other times it can be a huge bane esp if its distracting. As for school work, now that i think about it, you could try listening to just one song that makes u most motivated. and listen to it on youtube without the autoplay. i've done it a couple of times and often the initial music helps you accidentally slip into that flow state and after that since there's no music playing, ur in a sustained flow state. Great video as always mate!

I have not finished the video, only two minutes in but I’m gonna write this. Music is just like anything else. It’s just like drugs or alcohol or anything like that, a huge dopamine rush. Which you basically said towards the end, not the exact wording something similar. I have noticed what it does for me personally, I listen to all types of music but I’ve pulled off. With the car though, if I don’t have my AirPods in or music on, it’s constant dissociation, honestly without even music. The car is just, being able to hear everything on these new cars… I seriously can’t explain the constant dissociation in my life it’s scary. I definitely listen to rap or the modern pop and such, way less than like country or rock/metal or even EDM. With those three genres, I notice a difference in my mood. It’s a sedative. But see, with no real family other than my mom (all abusive and toxic and narcissistic it has just never worked with any of them, I’ve had to be the mature one being younger) I’d rather not be around those people. I haven’t seen a single friend in over two years, one who I hardly talk to now at 19 years old. I don’t even know if we’re friends anymore, but he’s one of the reasons I just want to work and work and work, wanting to better myself and shit. All of my interactions are online, despite most of them being in my area or even family friends who I get along with way more, and are more family like than my own family. Things like that, it’s enough to keep anyone up at night or constantly dissociated. I share all this because I use music as a jack of all trades basically. Sometimes it’s motivation, other times it’s to escape, it’s also to just better understand myself. edit: my comment is long, but I enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work and thank you

This is probably one the most recent realization I've had, and also one of the biggest. I'm only 13, I hope what I say is still somewhat understandable and relatable. Last year I was addicted to music, I think that's the best thing to call it. At school most work was on the computer, I would use earbuds and use them every minute throughout the school day, at home, when I went outside to walk I listened to music, when I was in the car I would use my mom's phone to listen to music. I used my airpods and earbuds I got an ear infection twice. In my opinion, it was the reason I lost so many friendships. I didn't interact with anyone in my class, I didn't interact with my family. This year I when to a different school, this was a school I went two years ago, I'm glad some people still bothered to remember me. In this school most of the work was on a computer and at this time I didn't have a phone. I feel like some sort of God made this happen, there were so many people suddenly trying to talk to me. I felt like there was nothing that needed to be filled with music. A few months later I got my phone, I went straight to listening like I did before, but it just didn't feel the same anymore, it felt like music was annoying. I don't hate music now, I play piano. To me, the piano is the greatest gift I could ever get, it might sound weird to say, but I feel saved by it and I'm glad I didn't give up on it last year. From my piano I met my music teacher; who talks too much and ends up giving me life advice, I was able to go to a church to be an accompanist, from that I met so many other musicians, from that I could perform for others; the thing that I probably wished for the most from last year. I didn't reread and I have bad english (please correct my english if I'm wrong) so sorry for the bad writing! Short answer: this is a good thing to tell teens, I have a lot of friends who listen to music everyday, one of them told me they listen to it even while they sleep; result: they all procrastinate. Saying music is like a drug is accurate.

I think you were spot on with how music can affect our mental state and namely, our attention spans. For me, I've found it's the type of music I listen to that can affect me negative in certain ways. Maybe using rap as motivation may have been a bad choice for you? I know a lot of the time if I'm feeling depressed, I'd not want to listen to certain sad songs that I have, and when I'm happy in the moment, the last thing I want is a sad song to ruin the moment for me. There's nothing wrong with using music as a tool as you said, but sometimes if you think you're listening to "too much music" it may be helpful to expand your musical taste. I know that I'd never probably listen to rap myself, but I can appreciate it as art. After listening to some raps as a critical listening experience, I've found I've been able to determine what I do and don't like aboiut the genre, and find music adjacent to the genre, or different rap subgenres that I enjoy. Now, if I want to put myself in the headspace that rap does, I have a list of songs that do that. Same with classical, Techno/EDM, and more. So, one of the things that may help if you're using the music you usually listen to to escape, is find different music. Take an album that you heard is good, an EP, heck even just a single song, and only listen. You may find it helps a lot.

I listen to music for like 10 minutes in the morning while I am brushing my teeth and dressing up and these things. It helps me to do them faster, so I won’t come late to school. Instead of depressing rap you should try stuff like metalcore or any other rock genre. It pumps you up without these deep feelings of loneliness. I used to listen to rap too, so I know what you are talking about, so I think changing the genre helps too and also not listening to music when you don’t need to. I don’t need music much while working out because I can still push to failure and I don’t listen to music earlier than 7 PM

I also listened to rap music a lot like a year ago, and to be honest that time was like the worst of my life. Usually the lyrics are only about drugs and women that makes you think on only the bad aspects of life that people promote. Ever since I started listeming to metal everything got better. I nevee though until I saw this video that music was a bad thing, and I still dont. But the music you listen to might really affect you, even if you dont realize it.

(Also a little thing that could help if you don't want to ruin the re-play ability of a song you like while doing any of these things is, just listen to some Dixon rave music... Well, every mornings and every night, I come home from school after spending an hour in common transport, and music is really helpful to make the time go faster. I listen to music every time I work or draw, and it mostly fade in the background after a bit because of how concentrated I am. Sometimes it doesn't because I don't want to work so it gets all my attention, but in the end it just helps me get things done. I don't listent to music to sleep or to wake myself up, those time must be quiet. Sometimes I drown myself in when I feel really bad but it's not too often so it's okay. Yes, I often imagine myself else where when there is only music, but even if there isn't I would do it too.

I make music, my whole life I’ve been around music and it affects me. It helps me focus and find emotions I sometimes need to find. I understand that music can have negative effects and I try not to let it be a negative influence. But music is also a way to make me forget the problems and just space out. I make edm and dubstep so it’s really powerful at giving you a lot of dopamine so I play that type of music when I’m working out or doing exercise. But when I’m studying I don’t often listen to music even calm songs. Because your brain does indeed need a break. You are really inspirational. ❤ I never skip you when I’m scrolling.

I feel your video very personal as I'm also a big hip-hop or rap music fan. I play it all the time. I waste hours searching new songs, the instrumentals, making my playlists, and so... If you really think about it, you waste big chunks of time when you work out with music as normally you select specific songs to hear, scroll down, play it, wait for the "pump" or high part of the song and so... I experimented working out in silence and the entire exercise list took me about 45 minutes, when with earbuds was about 1 hour or more. Another big important thing: you better listen your body/breath! And avoid dumb injuries and poor execution techniques.

There's definitely a balance to everything. Though needing to listen to music to energize me to get out of bed, or needing music to help me focus driving, this is usually a symptom of some other problem going on. Most often lack of sleep because growing up I had so many reasons to cut into sleep to get stuff done (which is horrible long-term). Though similarly, sometimes I'm just overwhelming myself with just too many activities so I can't focus properly. Gotta remember, you are a human, not a machine. There is a limit to how much good quality focus you have. More healthy habits you have the easier it is to focus. Though one thing that directly effects focus is meditation. Made things worse for the longest time because my mind was overwhelmed by a lot of things growing up and I just ignored them all. So if you never meditate, it'll take a bit depending on the life you've lived. Then meditation is kind of a skill. If you can learn how to relax and meditate everyday, everything just kinda becomes easy mode when it comes to concentrating on things and controlling emotions. 'course, do keep in mind if you're feeling negative emotions, sometimes there's a reason for that. Gratitude can be a wonderful thing, but you don't want to become too comfortable if something is really messing up your life. I do think listening to music is just part of a bigger thing. The brain craves stimulation. The less stimulation you give it, the more it will find stimulation in less stimulating things, and also make you notice more things that it usually wouldn't bother with because there's a bigger source of stimulation elsewhere. So if there's some big you absolutely hate doing, starve your brain of fun things for a month (easier said than done of course. Everyone grew up with tons of stimulation nowadays), and it will beg you to do anything, and then that really boring/annoying thing will become fun. Music is just one thing that can stimulate. However a lot of people spend too much time playing video games or watching youtube videos, which are specifically designed to trigger the maximum amount of stimulation to keep you coming back. I'm sure there's plenty of other things too you can probably think of. I do believe this is one of the many reasons why older generations are like "just work harder/you play too much". Since that does help you get things done, but it generally has some other flaws in how people implement it. This kind of mindset often neglects fixing emotional problems. Negative emotions are incredibly stimulating, so the brain will fixate on them a lot. Then you just lose a lot of energy and focus because you're having a bad time. Music and stuff can soothe it temporarily so you can focus, but do try to solve whatever issue it is.

I wouldn't consider myself addicted but i did get me thinking, sometimes its just a distraction for me or something that doesn't help me. But to see you discuss this topic with as much wisdom as you have was really interesting, and i found out why i use music. I personally do use it as a tool, i listen to more mellow stuff when im doing art or writing or homework and it does help me. It gets me more focused, it helps me enjoy doing these things which i enjoy but adds another element to it. Or if im working out or just feeling a bit bored i listen to hard rock or rap. But if I'm in a good mood but with not much to do then i might listen to pop or pop rock. Anyways i just wanted to say thank you for putting out this video, sorry if it was a bit of a long comment to read but i just really wanted to give my 2 cents regarding this topic.
