SPA2-platform was developed by Volvo and will only be used by Volvo and Polestar. As you know, Volvo is more independent from Geely than for example Zeekr and they do their own R&D, engineering and have their own factories. They have no factories outside of China and the US that are capable of producing the SPA2 platform currently, which is why it will be produced in China and in the US. It is also a smart decision, since most PS3:s will not go to Europe but to the US and China (bigger market for larger vehicles like this). The European Volvo factories are either producing ICE-vehicles (because they still need those to survive), or the really expensive high end Volvos like XC90, S90 (that would be Sweden). Volvo is currently building a new EV only factory in Europe which will increase their European output of electric vehicles. They are in this transitionary period where they need to keep producing the hybrids and PHEV:s to survive, but they also need capacity for EV:s, so they have decided to keep the European factories producing ICE/PHEV and letting the newer factories in China and the US produce the EV:s until the European factories can undergo rerigging, and European battery production can take place in Sweden (Northvolt joint venture called NOVO in Gothenburg is currently being built). Just adding some nuance here to the issue at hand, it is a very complex situation for these traditional automakers. Let's face it, Polestar has to go through these same challenges because they have no production and are relying on traditional automakers (Volvo, Geely) for production.
@ms-jl6dl3 ай бұрын
In the meantime Northvolt (batteries) has gone bankrupt and european EV sales are in a free fall,ICE cars are falling too. Nice review. One correction though. The EPA rating isn't different just because the wheel and tire combos. It's that the Performance Pack and standard cars have a different default setting for engaging and disengaging the rear motor. By default the non-Performance cars will turn off the rear motor while cruising, making the car effectively FWD unless driving conditions or your right foot, demand otherwise. (or you can select "Performance" in the driver settings, which then will keep the rear motor engaged). The Performance Pack cars are exactly the opposite. They are delivered with the Performance drive setting as the default (both motors stay engaged), and you would need to select "Range" in the driver's settings to have it turn off the rear motor when it's not needed. So it's that motor management, along with the wheels/tires, that creates the EPA difference, since the EPA test must be done on the default settings. The Polestar 4 is/will be the same, just it's the front motor on that one that it will turn on/off, or not.

Amber turn signals detract from the available space for brake lights and taillights. And unfortunately, even though LED lights could have an amber light and a red light share the same space, your amber light would detract from the area of another lamp that would normally be red. I don't know what would really be the best solution for that dilemma.

Nice review, thank you. It's clearly a quality car with a lot of Volvo DNA in it. I can see this being a good replacement for my 2016 Volvo XC70 in a few years' time. As I have a Polestar 2 already, that would make me an all-electric and all Polestar household. A couple of potential issues and questions. 1. On the Polestar 2, the driver's display is beautifully integrated into the dashboard in the traditional way and you can display the map on it for safety so you don't have to look at the center console for the map when driving. It seems that on the Polestar 3, the drivers display is an ugly small rectangular display that appears to be bolted on without and regard for aesthetics. Your review did not demonstrate maps being displayed on the drivers display, because if that's not possible then I would hesitate about buying this car 2. When I sat in the car at my Polestar space earlier this week, the huge gap down to the floor from the back of the wireless phone charger with a tiny back stop seemed to me to be poorly designed, so it's not only that the phone is going to fly off towards you when you accelerate hard but also maybe if you brake hard, your phone is going to go flying over the back stop and drop a couple of feet down onto the floor under the centee console. Also, the wireless charger doesn't have space for two phones which is not good given that the usb sockets are underneath the arm rest, meaning that a charging cable would have be stretched from underneath the arm rest if the passenger phone user wanted to use their phone while driving. As far as the slightly wrinkled leather, my Polestar 2 had the same thick when I bought it new in 2022. At first I was bothered by it and even asked for it to be repaired under warranty: that was refused because Polestar says it's just a byoroduct of the type of leather used. I confirmed that on the girums, and over time I have come to like the look of the tiiny creases which haven't changed at all from when the car was new.

i believe they've said the framing for the rear screen, reduces the head room in the back of the car. so its not the glass it self but how to safely put it in the car.

There is well over a thousand P3 Launch Edition already on US soil as of first of July. Probably closer to 2000 by now. Will not be subject to 100% tariff. Still has the ongoing 27.5 % tariff. My P3 has been here since the end of May. Launch Edition deliveries subject to final delivery software deployment.

Nice car, good review. Usual gripe with Polestar showcasing stunning top spec wheels yet entry level model looks drab and boring with some sort of energy saver geek nonsense wheels. They’ve got to step this up - SRSM is nice, but not attractive because of the wheel dimensions (in our opinion) - and we are Polestar 2 owners looking to upgrade.

I read a lot of comments that it's too expensive. People don't seem to get that this is the "SUV" flagship, same quality as a Volvo EX90 and it's supposed to be $75K to $100K. That's not outrageous at all for this car. Most reviews say it drives as well as anything in its class and that' it is as well built/finished as its competitors. Just because it is called "Polestar" and people don't know its history doesn't mean it is overpriced. It's not.
@TB-up4xi5 ай бұрын
Far too expensive in Australia - starts at (in $AUD) $148k no options, $183k with the performance pack, sound and seat upgrades - to put that into perspective that would get you 2 model Y performance vehicles and have $5k left over or at the top end it's competing with the Audi Q8 e-tron, MB EQS and Porche Macan Turbo electric. At the end of the day it's a Swedish styled and Chinese made vehcile with very suspect software competing against established German marques. I have the top spec XC60 T8 Polsetar PHEV but I'm not kidding myself it's in the same class as the Audi, MB, BMW or Porsche alternatives.

It is overpriced. I am basing this not on your claim on what it is supposed to be but on what it actually is - and that is a medium size SUV at the size of a model y with medium interior quality and okish range.
@benjaminsmith22875 ай бұрын
@@mondvogel6124 It does not have medium interior quality. Have you been in one? And the ones out are pre-production and still the quality is excellent. It's not overpriced one bit. It should cost what a Volvo EX90 does as it has the same quality, they share components. I don't care about range. Range doesn't determine quality.
@mondvogel61245 ай бұрын
@@benjaminsmith2287 i have been in one, not at all impressed. Range is definitely an input to how much a vehicle should cost
@benjaminsmith22875 ай бұрын
@@mondvogel6124 Fine then. The quality of the Polestar 3 is very high IMO. I've sat and been driven in or have driven a number of cars and the Polestar uses alternative sustainable materials, ,just like Volvo does, often the same materials as Volvo, and they are of high quality. Plus, these cars are very solidly built. In terms of range, no, it doesn't equal how good a car is. It's like fuel economy. That's not how I judge expensive cars. I judge them as cars. How well are they built. How well do they filter out road imperfection and noise. What type of noises do they make. Etc. The tech is a part of the car but the car as a machine is what I look at first. Polestar is using the Porsche Cayenne as a benchmark for the Polestar 3. It's not trying to be in any Model Y type of tier and that's something people need to understand. This is the flagship Polestar SUV, not the middle market Polestar 4 that more competes with the Y. Do I think it's as good as a Cayenne? Probably not as Porsche at least in terms of chassis and steering input is hard to beat plus their ride refinement is very high. But if they are at 85 percent or better, that's a car worth looking at. Lucid is making fine cars too. It took some time but they are. Good cars aren't the name on them. They're the engineering teams behind them working with other teams. Polestar has some solid engineering teams, plus design, plus Volvo know how how to build cars, behind them.

That´s nice car - I didn't know that it's already on the road. I only feel that the interior is too much Ikea design - simplistic - for me in this category, works better in the EX30. Filling the line of contenders for the next race to Vegas :)))) Any excuse for seeing more of it will do. It should get olympic! We should see like every 3 months? 6 months ? a new one.

How do you rate NVH/suspension cushiness to Audi etron/Q8 etron? Wondering if I should wait for this to enter the used market or just pull the trigger on a used etron. My highest priorities are quiet/comfort (and stereo)

It's not complicated. The cars are numbered in order of (anticipated) release like iPhones. Unfortunately, the 3’s release was delayed due to technical issues with the platform which resulted in the 4 being released before the 3. The nomenclature has nothing to do with size or power, its simply a naming system based entirely on the (anticipated) order of release like the iPhone.

The Polestar 3 rollout has been a complete cluster but given what Ford did with the Mach E and Cadillac with the Lyric it might just be par for the EV course.
