Brilliant video Mike, I could watch traffic at Lewisham all day long. At the end of the 90's I lodged in the Anchor pub at the bottom of Lewisham Hill on the opposite side of the road to Maggie's and used to dine there every Saturday lunch, best food and helpings ever.

What a dump. I’m from the Scottish highlands and I try to avoid travelling to cities and towns because they’re so busy, dirty and just depressing. I don’t know how you London folk manage to live somewhere so busy…..I’m in awe of you guys. Busy where I live means 2 sheep on the road! We have a lovely train line that starts in Inverness and ends in Kyle of Lochalsh. If you ever get a chance you should make the journey - it’s really pretty.

Yes I get how you feel MJ, I live on the outskirts of a city and I only have to drive a few miles to be in the countryside. I know the line you live by which I have travelled on a few times, and the first time was in the late 70s. I have also drove the road to Kyle of Lochalsh three or four times so I know what a lovely area you are talking about Thank you very much for watching and your comment, regards Mike.

Fascinating Mike, it would have been a Signalmans nightmare in the old days. Thanks for the lookround, too it's a different world down there 😮
@dodgydruid Жыл бұрын
It was, hence why they had the big box at Lewisham and the small box at St Johns, St John's covered the St John's platforms back when there was still 4 platforms and the junction bypassing Lewisham for the fast stuff. It was unusual the one box me old man never passed out on and they took him off the whole area when the Hither Green accident happened and he was moved to quiet boxes in Kent, HG proved to be a terrible thing for him as he had worked there relief in the week it happened and he got carted off by the old bill to answer questions etc. He was also one of the first to arrive at the Lewisham disaster literally running all the way down from North Kent East signalbox to a scene of utter carnage, only a box boy then what a way to start a career. St Johns incidentally also signalled for the old Blackheath line before its closure making it quite a busy box, the dive down from the bridge was originally Hither Green's continental sidings where boat train freights were placed for express movement to the train ferries.

@@antman09ful1 Lewisham station is located at a very strategic spot where many different railway lines serving central London (& one light railway line serving Canary Wharf) come together, so an attractive spot to dump as much commuter housing as possible. The first few redevelopment projects were OK; they kept it spacious. During the next few development phases they put housing density above any other considerations; it now looks very crammed-in like a mini-Manhattan. The investment may be welcome for sure, but architecturally it could have been done much better; it looks a real mess of mis-matched modern architectural styles. Pleasant aesthetic design doesn't have to cost much.
@jc441-i3q Жыл бұрын
Was Lewisham ever beautiful though? I actually like many modern buildings and don't automatically hate them (and I genuinely love the Barbican) - but I don't like the look of the highrises around Lewisham station at all. They all have the same brightly coloured cladding that makes them look very plastic. I thought that this was the style of a particular architectural firm but no, many different architects seem to design highrise buildings in this way so it must just be the current trend.
