I Lived With a Toyota Supra For a Week - Here's my Real Thoughts

The 2021 A90 Toyota Supra is here. Toyota was kind enough to lend me the A91 for a road trip from Seattle,WA to Jackson Hole WY! During this trip I was truly able to experience a small dose of what Toyota Supra ownership was like. After all this time did I have a change of heart? Let's talk about it. I’ve owned my 2021 Supra for a few months now and here’s my thoughts for anyone who’s actually on the fence about getting one. I do feel the car is a bit over priced, BUT that doesn’t mean it’s not worth getting. The car is great. Once you actually hop in and drive one you really question why people are complaining so much. Minus not being a manual, it checks every box for me. The car looks amazing in person and has a lot of presence on the road. You’d think you’re in a super car with the amount of attention and people pulling out their phones. The interior is great, better than anything Toyota would of made so idk why people are complaining. It would of been cool if the interior had more character like the mk4 but overall it’s still really nice and comfortable. The power is great and can make GTR levels of performance for just a few grand in mods. The engine is very stout and can hold a ton of power all day long. The transmission although being automatic, is still really fun and quick and you get over it not being a manual pretty quickly. (This is my first automatic car) The car sounds soooo good even for stock and the burbles are addicting and constantly make you smile. The window noise is not even close to as bad as people make it seem, at least on the 2021, I haven’t driven the 2020. And If that is a problem for you there’s like a $100 fix for it so shouldn’t be a deal breaker. The car just feels special and you rarely see them on the road. Overall it was worth the buy. Don’t listen to all the hate from all the people who haven’t even driven one. Pull the trigger

Yup I'm getting the 6sp. I could care less its a bmw, because bmw knows how to build fast cars. In my mind its the best of both worlds. Get the germans to put together all the bits, let the japanese tweak and tune. German cars are the best. They know how to combine performance and refinement. My 15' wrx was the most fun you can have for sub 30k, but it was an awful car. It would rattle your teeth out, and it was so loud at freeway speeds i couldn't even make calls. My S6 wasn't the fastest for the money, but the ability to go from quiet freeway cruiser to madman amazing.

When I was 19 I took a 3 week road trip across the country by myself. Amazing experience, our country is absolutely full of beauty. I did it in my first car, a 2005 VW Jetta Wolfsburg. As a teen, it was a sports car to me lol. I've driven many faster things now, but back when it was one of a handful of cars that i'd driven, it was the pinnacle of driving. One of the few parts of the country I didn't touch was Wyoming/Idaho. You've inspired me to take a road trip there. I have to now. I'm 24 and just bought my first new car, a 2021 Corolla. Perhaps it's time to make memories with my first new car, and take a 5 year anniversary trip.

when I was still working as a valet attendant before the pandemic, I parked BMWs with those weird joystick gear selectors, and those things puzzled me the first time I tried them. with the way they're operated, they're still the most annoying thing about moving ANY BMW car I've parked in my seven years working as a valet. hate those things so much. GM started copying that gear selector with the Buick cars too, and their version is even MORE absurd than BMW's implementation imo.

I was a service valet at a bmw dealership for a while, my first 2 days there i hated the dct autos with a passion and thought id never be able to stand them. After adjusting i realized how user friendly and intuitive the system is, all it does is eliminate unnecessary movements. You hit the ignition then pull the gear lever back an inch. Dosent beat a stick, but its an improvement on the traditional auto

@@BikesAndSquids I drove 3 MK4 and owned a 2jzgte swapped IS. The MK4 felt really heavy even compared to the IS. I own a MK5 now and its a might not a pure street fighter like the MK4, it performance like a beast on all corners. Here is the weird(positive) thing, I have drove many euro cars and the b58 on the supra actually feels like a Japanese engine even though its german made. This engine is already making great numbers and still the only thing people are breaking are axles and driveshafts. By no means these engines are glass cannons.

I cant fathom how people think this car “hasnt lived up to the name”. Its better in every conceivable metric than any car toyota ever produced independently. BMW like interior features are fine, because they are frankly better than the toyota equivalent. Understand if you actually got “toyota”, in reality, you’d just end up with what you have now, with Camry like interior features. I cant buy into the whole “soul” element of things that people feel this car doesnt have. Its aesthetically captivating, performs way above it’s publicized weight belt, and is significantly nicer by orders of magnitude than any of its predecessors.

If I were to guess, I think the issue is that the BMW interior is nice, but it doesn't fit what "Supra" means to people. You want to feel like you are in a Japanese car, but can't because it feel too German, especially regarding an intuitive layout.

I heard there is an inexpensive aftermarket carbon fiber deflector for the side mirror base that deflects the wind minimizing if not eliminating the wind noise. Silly, BMW or Toyota didn't fix this during development. Seemed like a simple fix.

Well done! What a magical road trip! I have been a fan of the new Supra and I am a long time Toyota fan. I currently own a Toyota and love Toyota Care. Granted I have not spent a long time in a Supra I have to agree 100% it looks better in person than on video or pictures. From my perspective the big let down is that it does not come in a manual. I am loving the new 86 and it comes in a manual. Come on Toyota give us a manual especially with the Supra's spiritual rival coming out, the Nissan 400 Z which will have a manual right out the gate. Again, great job!

Sadly, manuals don't sell well, so it doesn't make sense, financially to offer manual transmissions. Look at Ferrari, Lambo, McLaren, and Acura. Ideally, we'd all have a McLaren and a manual Miata.

That's why I think people will opt for the manual over the conveniences of auto. for example the GR86 Manual is completely sold out everywhere, whilst the auto is still selling. And that's a car more people would daily drive yet they are still choosing manual.

I'm hoping the 370Zs drop in value so I can get a garage kept example cheap when the 400Z comes out. I like the new 400Z with the exception of the front bumper cover, but I'm sure aftermarket will fix that. But my thing is, being a turbo it probly wont have that euphoric VQ37hr howl I love. I've had 2, I'm down on my luck and had to sell my last one, but plan on buying a 3rd 370Z in the next few years when I get things turned around, and maybe a used 400Z someday.

The depreciation of the a90 Supra may or may not drop as fast just because of the name. I doubt the new Z will crap on the Supra in terms of performance but I'd say the it probably will as far as sales go especially if priced below the Supra.

The best 6 cylinder in existence today is the BMW B58, simple as that. Ultra reliable, bullet proof, and massive HP/TQ gains can be had with simple mods. People should appreciate the right decision Toyota made.

Just a quick word on wind noise. I just got a '97 Mustang Cobra a few months ago, I noticed that I could have either one or both windows down, didn't matter, there was no wind noise or buffeting at all, air flows over this car very nice. That's not the case with my newer F150. Crack a window and you are blasted with air and noise, don't even think of cracking the passenger window.

Just want to point out that the car you were actually driving wasn't an "A91." Its an A90 still. "A91" was the special editions that came in the smurf blue and black colors foir 2021. It had cf mirrors, rear spoiler, and matte black wheels, vinyl strips on the pillars, and some alcantra seat stuff. You might want to edit your caption. :) But good review nurtherless.

A letter to all manufactures. We don't hate you for trying, we're glad you're making cars like this and not just SUV's and econo-boxes, however, that being said..... You just don't know or understand how to make a car with passion and soul anymore, your're all to caught up in the numbers and figures. Your engineers are top shelf at hitting your marks for making cars go, stop and turn especially to a budget these days, and while yes its extremely impressive of how capable all cars are now... that in turn is where your problems lie, the better they perform, the further you refine them.... The more they become engineering wet dreams the less of a car. I don't want a computer on wheels, I want a mechanical machine, something with character; I want mechanical noise as I pull through the rev range, I dont need engineered farts because the car is soulless. I want to see a nice simple tacho climb towards the red lines on the cluster telling me I'm right up there. I want a basic hand brake and limited intrusions from the car.. after all, It's my car! And I'm driving it... not you! I don't need you interfering with how I'm taking a turn or applying the brakes. And lastly and this is a biggy, If you're going to reuse a name that has a cult following amongst my peers because its a 'good marketing strategy' ... Then you damn well better not tarnish the name and the brand. Because the guys who were there before you worked so hard to build that up. You better work twice as hard to hit those same feels... thats your job. Sincerely the driver, the car enthusiast... the consumer.

The new Z makes the Supra all of a sudden, look kinda old. Supras design relies on fake vents and bulges everywhere to seemingly distract you, whilst the new Z's design is just so clean and smooth. I'd go for the Z everytime, if I could afford either one...

The S55 and the s58 are 10x better an can old 1000hp stock block while the b58 is barely getting above 700hp. Secondly what Toyota said is bs, car companies make sports cars all the time and develope new engines and it doesn’t cost $100,000 to make a 300hp sports car. They could of made a new 3jz and use it in the whole new generation of F series Lexus, and there trucks.

Is the most reliable engine in the Supra not the one in Z4 . 3rdly B58 in 2020 model already made 1000whp like a 1 year Nd 3 months ago and 2021 has better engine that’s more updated 6 ports and beefed up internals with low compression. So it can handle more power than previous 2020. And finally fan boy , Toyota reworked everything in the Supra engine bolt by bolt , and made sure it’s reliable to their standard and that it won’t shit on ur driveway busting all that oil leaks. Bmw are trash only bmw I’ll ever buy is the Supra . Had 5 series before....

I lived in Montana for a few years and have lived in England for a few years. Europe has great historical stuff to see but I have never seen anything more naturally beautiful than Glacier. Western Montana and Wyoming, driving through the Grand Tetons is an amazing place to drive. In the summer obviously lol

It’s funny that you mention the screen angle on the Supra. GM did the opposite on the Camaro. It’s tilted downwards to help with the glare and it’s a common complaint from folks who review them. It’s hard to get it right on that one. And I absolutely think there’s nothing wrong with how much BMW influence there is with this car. I think the car is better because of it.

I bought a white a91 2 months ago. I traded my 2016 370 Z Nismo for it. I absolutely love this a91. The whole BMW thing is nonsense to me. They made a good collaboration here. Very fun and easy car to drive. Every single time i drive it i catch people almost wrecking trying to take pics with there phones or neck's breaking as they stick there head out the window to see it. The Z was a fun car, this is a whole different animal. In a good way that is. Interested to see the new Proto but man late 2022 to early 23 is a long wait. So i am having fun now.

Nissan is bleeding money, they're only reviving the new z because they need to generate interest in the brand again .its not going to be a new sportscar built from the ground up they don't have the resources to do that, Toyota may he a big company but they're a big company because they know what they're doing. They knew the supra isn't going to sell well but still decided to make one because their fans have been crying for a proper sports car, so what if its alot of bmw , BMWs are amazing drivers cars and with Toyota making sure the b58 passing their reliability standards the new supra has everything you could ever want in a sportscar.
