I felt the ceremony was more of a celebration of LGBTQ+ culture than it was of French culture. I think that's why Lady Gaga was asked to perform. Her pop hit, "Born This Way," has been an unofficial anthem of the LGBT community since its release. French culture, on the other hand, seemed to me to be parodied throughout the festivities. I appreciate your thoughtful commentary on this event, Alice. I learned a lot from this video and will continue to love and appreciate the class and dignity of the French.

As a lesbian and agender person I second this. LGBTQ+ culture is beautiful, and I cherish it greatly. But this was not the time or the place for it. This was a time to celebrate French culture and countries coming together! I don’t care that there is a drag queen there I want to see the athletes! They also could have added tasteful commentary on the debate of trans people in sports but instead they spewed this crap like it would help anyone! Overall as a person who has dreamed of being in the Olympics since I could walk it is very sad to see this beautiful tradition turn into this.

When they showed us this lgbt themed ceremony, I immediately went "ohh no wonder lady gaga was here even tho she had nothing to do with France" It makes sense to invite Celine Dion(although I still find it unauthentic) but Lady Gaga? The only thing French culture in this opening was probably the lady singing opera

May be you didn't follow all the details (did you watch the ceremony entirely ?), there was tones of them regarding our history. TONES.... May be you didn't found them because you have to know a lot about our pretty long history (I get it, I'm no expert of other countries history). But I'm guessing this youtuber (grifter for republicans and conservatives/anti LGBT people really) is more into making views rather than being intellectually honest.

As a Moroccan who loves and appreciates so many things about the French culture and the French elegance and class, I am Muslim as well, and I must say that this ceremony shocked me on so many levels! There are so many cultural French symbols that could have been easily been emphasized in this ceremony. I think there is a clear agenda behind this whole fiasco, quel dommage! I watched it with my Swiss husband and he could not believe his eyes, it is shameful, and sure we need to speak up because it will never feel natural to portray such things on a global scale, anybody was embarrassed about it, even the most progressive Portuguese people we know. Shameful and low class! Who are the people behind this? I would have never approved such idea even if it meant I’d loose my job!

Telling than everyone who didn’t like the ceremony are frustrated racists from extreme right. Telling also that 85% of French people liked the ceremony… There was some kind of damage control to shut down any bad critics in the press. Hopefully outside France, people can still express from their guts and that was really a bad ceremony. Paris set the bar very low for Los Angeles in 2028.

I don't know if French schools still teach that Marie Antoinette did say 'Let them eat cake' to an angry mob surrounding Versailes back in 1792? modern historians concluded 'she didn't' but the Revolutionary historians forced it into her mouth to seek a legitimacy to kill her. and as many Bourbons as they can find and gets a hands on. too bad a man who put her to death ended up in the same place as her. that Robespierre. he did exactly what he and his goons accused Bourbons of doing. and even worse!. something Napoleon I was carefully NOT TO DO when he (coaxed by Sieyes) rose to power and 'ended the Revolution'.

I am Australian. As a family, we usually gather together to watch the opening & closing ceremonies of the olympics (and, of course, as much of the sports that we love in between!). The ceremonies are normally beautiful, uplifting, wholesome & heart-warming... something for the whole family to watch. This year, I felt a mixture of shock, disgust, offense, hurt, anger, disbelief & nausea. So much so, that I didn't even see the ending with Celine Dion (whom I absolutely love & own several of her albums), because I switched off the TV. Then, I happened to see the women's boxing "match" between Italy and Algeria... not much of a "match" between the poor woman (Angela Carini) and the transgender Imane Khelif (a biological male). The difference in power was staggeringly obvious. Now, out of complete frustration, I am simply refusing to watch ANY of the rest of this year's olympics. What would be the point? If women are being forced to compete against men, it is no-longer a fair competition. At this rate, there may as well not BE any "women's" competitions... not if biological males are allowed to compete in the same sports. I know I've gone a bit off-topic with that last part, but I am just so disappointed with the whole thing. Truth be told, I was relieved to hear that you found it terrible too, Alice.

First of all, France called South Korea as North Korea. Then, they called North Korea as North Korea. It was very intentional because South Korean companies defeat the France Companies for both military and nuclear productions in order to have win a contract in other countries. France hung the Olympic flag upside down. The river was extremely contaminated by germs. But they put the swimmers in that river. France made only vegetable meals for all athletes. So they cannot have a good condition for their games. France did not put air conditioner in all athletes and shuttle buses. All of products selling in the gift shop is ‘Made in China.’ Only good for Red China. France showed so many rubber, stealing, and pick pocket toward both athletes and tours. The Last Supper scene was beyond hideous & I am so glad there has been such a backlash. Vive La France 🇫🇷. Greetings from Ireland 🇮🇪

Exactly. It shows that the predominant worldwide artistic "culture" is not individual expression and inclusivity of all points of view, all people and ways of being, it's to recreate the same very exclusive and clique, offensive, anti-religion, pro-woke ideology agenda of social unrest, chaos, depravity, degradation of others and the overturn of cultural norms. It makes no room for anyone else, but sacrifices the viewpoints of the majority of others to uphold the one "inclusive" worldview of a tiny minority of people. And I say that as a liberal.

THANK YOU for sharing this, Alice. I'm a Christian in America....Southern California, as a matter of fact, and did not appreciate this opening ceremony at the Olympics AT ALL. The first thing I thought about was you and how do the people in France think about THIS? Do they all agree with this? She is always so classy and sophisticated and for this to be televised to billions of people around the world especially children with even a man's private parts hanging out of his pants, I thought was appalling, disrespectful and beyond tasteless. Frankly vulgar. I also understand your other insights and I agree. The respect of your Replican Guarde is a noteworthy concern and the beheaded Marie Antoinette was uncalled for. Anyway, I'm glad that you shared this video on your channel. Have a great day and thank you again for being so classy and chic... xo❤

I can't put a hope on. i'd better see Trump wins. and LA 2028 will be a real Hollywood Glam at its very golden age!. and yes. Republicans did hook Olympics 2024 to their Hyde Park speeches by many! in Georgia. it begins with a black 'single mom' woman saying Life was good for her and fellow black Georgians under Trump before Biden came. and Biden ruins everything, and conveniently associating this Wokelympics to Biden and Harris. Vance followed the same suit. with Christian politics added to the mix with the Highs and Lows of his upbringer (he said at one point his mom got hooked to narcotics he doesn't say what, beyond the word 'narcotics'. he tried everything to get this out of his mom, only to discover that the faith in God did alot to get his mom clean. this emphasizes on what 'Good American Value' is, and how life was good under this value, and bad when Biden comes (with his policy opens up illict immigration flood gates and antagonizes fellow Americans like him and many)

Just 3 minutes in and I agree 100% that Lady Gaga should not have performed. She's one of the best artists of her generation (and my personal favorite), but it should have been a French artist celebrating French culture and French achievements. The 2020 (Misia - Japanese), 2016 (Caetano Veloso - Brazilian), 2012 (Paul McCartney - British), and 2008 (Lin Miaoke - Chinese) Olympics all had singers from the host nation. 2004 was the last time when this didn't happen, with Bjork performing in Athens.

I've grewn up watching the Grand Opening and Closings of Sydney Olympics in 2000, and yes with Kylie Minogue on stage, sure this is very Gay, but it is classic, perfect 'gay ness' added to the mix ever, and it is her masterpiece, and that was the day of Lightyears album. and this announced her returns from the worst flop in her career. And as a full gronw man i've watched BOTH Beijing 2008 and London 2012. Both of which are historical narratives of their respective host nations, the best known things of their nations-China is best known of Wuxia flicks, and with their 5000 years of 'Civilization'. British shown off their best in their histories, including Industrial Revolution (how five Olympics rings are made with cast steel on stage), Beatles songs (i'd say it is 'The Beatles Olympics', and with almost every members not live anymore), and also included The Liverpool anthem (maybe? but Hey Jude is associated to Liverpool FC), and Origins of Modern Olympics, with de Coubertin's time in UK, what he saw there. there's no memorial service to him in this Paris Olympics 2024. Instead of celebrating the beautiful culture of an entire country, they decided to celebrate identity politics. The Olympics isn't the place for this kind of celebration. Not at all. I think a lot of the backlash is that people have grown very tired of identity politics being crammed into every facet of their lives; every form of entertainment *must* be about gender, race, sexuality, etc. Then, of course, was the mockery/insulting of Christianity which was distasteful (I'm atheist, btw). On top of it all, it wasn't even good; it was complete ass (or balls, technically).

With so much wonderful talent in France, why choose American and Canadian performers? Why not French ones? The French Revolution brought many high ideals to the world, along with the American one, which France supported, to its great cost, and for which we Americans will always be grateful. We would not have achieved our necessary independence without France’s government support and amazing French generals like the Marquis de Lafayette. Why focus on the bloodiest aspects during the Reign of Terror of this great historical event? This is not even the way to represent France’s cabaret culture, either, the TV series Outlander did a much better job, it’s adult, risqué, but not déclassé . Like most tacky modern “culture” this was based on the extreme fringes of US culture, like celebrity worship, gay culture, Wokeism and shock value. There is absolutely nothing creative about it. Like France, our American culture is so much more than this trash! The persons who approved of this “ceremony” owe a huge apology to the citizens of France, shame on them.

I'm not the biggest champion of the Olympics as they've always been too humanistic or paganistic for me... but I could understand that its kinda neat that people still gather around the world to complete in these difficult sports. So even though I am no expert on Olympic openings, and normally I wouldn't care about the Olymics at all... even I think (I know) they messed up badly here on several accounts. If I understand correctly, openings are not merely some superbowl halftime show. They are supposed to be generally artistic, unifying around a theme of legacy and achievement, respectful of international guests, and of course relevant to the hosting country's own unique culture. Now, I am a Christian, but very much so NOT Roman Catholic... Yet I will admit that France, along with Rome and Italy, has a very Catholic tradition, much like America has a very Protestant tradition. So it would make sense to referce some form of Christian art, something like the Notre Dame. But because they do not see the rise of Christianity in the west as a triumph, they cannot celebrate it. So rather than celebrate the beauty that came from Christianity, they chose to make sacrilegious parody of Christian art and traditions. Instead, they celebrate the destruction of everything that Christianity built. They made the Christian pagan. They took the holy and made it profane. That is the biggest offense. And the thing is, they could have just sidestepped this by simply focusing more on art and archetecture and the enlightment... but they are uncapable of admitting that anything good came from history or Christianity. It is only their new ideal modern progress that destroys tradition in favor of debauchery and debasement. And in so doing, somehow the whole thing became a satanic orgy. As for the political angle, while I think it is fair for France to reference Marie Antoinette or the Bastille or things along that line, I don't think it should have been done so controversially with such a focus on the destruction. Similarly, imagine America opening the ceremony with George Washington, not simply sitting under his famous cherry tree, but instead depicting him absurdly tar and feathering King George while we dumped his tea in the harbor... and then dropping the bomb on Japan and shooting Hitler through the mustache, and killing terrorists.... inappropriate for the setting. War and unrest is not the focus of the Olympics. Instead we might depict George Washington chopping down his tree or Abe Lincoln in a log cabin, the signing of the Constitution, Native Americans qnd Pilgrims qt the first thanksgiving or Thomas Edison inventing the lightbulb... American iconography rather than political critique.

I was astounded and so sorry that the French were done dirty like this. I thought of all the cultural references Paris and France could use as motifs (call me cliched!): the food, the every day style like berets and marinieres, beautiful architecture, art and specific artists like Monet, ingres, Delacroix, cezanne, art movements like pointillism or Impressionism , diors new look, Chanel & all the fashion, iconic design like perfume bottles, the French resistance, the French foreign legion, French bravery etc. There was SO much to go at! It could have been beautiful. I don’t know who thought it was a good idea! And I’m a Christian so I found it distasteful to say the least. It felt purposefully mocking and hurtful. But even if I was not, think of all the inspiration you could have drawn on from my (limited) list above. It could have been a visual FEAST! I am sorry. You guys don’t deserve it at all.

I could feel she sang her heart out with every fibers of her being. Bravo Celine and May God bless you and your family always. What a magnificent way to end the ceremony!

The Opening Ceremony was just all about the Je Be Tais Quoi (LGBT). Not about Paris or France at all.
