I am 24 now, I got diagnosed when I was 19, I was already clinically depressed and anxious since I was 13 yo and one of the collateral effects of the HIV medication is that it causes depression, I've been phisically healthy but mentally broken since I started to take my meds, it's been so hard for me to have a social life, to date and even to get a job, I go so insecure and fearful to the job interviews even tho I know they don't know about my diagnosis, I am so scared to approach people and I've been economically and mentally unstable. IMO someone with HIV should always disclose their status to their partner, even if they’re “undetectable”. Use protection, get tested and have open communication. People forget there’s a ton of other serious STI’s you can catch. And if this dude’s diagnosis was a result of a cheating partner while in a supposedly monogamous relationship, then that guy who cheated is an awful POS perpetuating negative stereotypes of gay men.
@MinnieMousey064 жыл бұрын
really though, i don't think there's enough research done on what "undetectable" really means. like anything can happen where you're infectious again or what if the virus mutates so it's resistant to the meds?
@emma66564 жыл бұрын
@@MinnieMousey06 there has been a whole lot of studies done about undetectable and medication compliance. When you are undetectable, it means the medication has stopped the virus from making more copies, what is in your body dies off except for a small portion that goes into hybernation, kinda like some cancer cells you can never get rid of. If you are not taking your medication correctly fhen yes, the virus that is left can learn about that medication and become resistant, just like any bug with antibiotics. But studies have been done with couples where one partner is negative, over YEARS, the couples don't use condoms in this time, and all of the negative partners stayed negative... and by years in this study, i really mean years... it was like 10 years theh followed these couples and did the study. Also positive women naturally conceive with a negative partner and then give birth naturally to a negative child. The research has been done.

Even if using a condom... because if you choose not to trust only HIV positive people and the idea of undetectable, but not those that can lie about having recent 'negative' STI/STD screening, then i think anyone who is positive is better of not having any kind of a relationship with you anyway. My youngest client was 14, he initially told us that he was 18 bc he was afraid we would tell his parents. When he became my client, he actually told me he was 14, that's how we found out. I say this bc trust is absolutely needed and crucial with health practicioners. Your story is so similar to so many of my clients who were diagnosed in their twenties (I myself was in the same age bracket as them). To be able to witness someone's journey and support them is humbling snd an honor. Hands down, best episode of "Ask Me Anything". It was positive, emotional, educational, the guy was hot. It was great all around. More people should speak out on HIV because like he mentioned, there is so much that has changed since the 80s and 90s. More studies are being done, better medications are being administered but more importantly more people are being aware that with the continued conversations HIV will be "another thing you go see a doctor about" and not so much of the 80s stereotypical disease. Conversations help. So, keep talking guys.

I feel like HIV/AIDS was a whole different thing before I was born because all the educationn I remember getting was it's not airborne, you can't get it from touching someone, you can live a long life, you won't die. I never remember being thaaat scared of it, other than it being incurable. Also, I didn't know bug chasers is a thing... you learn something new everyday.

3:45 I'm in nursing school currently and we learned exactly this, reducing the stigma of HIV/AIDS and treating patients with it like respectable human beings. The fact that trained and licensed doctors treated him as if his illness is THAT contagious is horrible.

At this point, I thought we pretty much had nearly a cure for HIV and AIDS. The fact we dont at this point is OBSURD
@alexPsanz2 жыл бұрын
We do have “nearly a cure”. For many people the current antivirals make it so that you have an undetected level of HIV virus and you can live a completely normal life. The only thing better when be an actual cure that stops you from needing to take a medication.

There’s a HUGE need for more education about HIV because there are so many people who don’t even know you even can be undetectable, live a normal long healthy life and not pass it to anyone. Why don’t we teach this in schools!!

I think there's a fear that if we tell people the truth, then they will be reckless....but i always believe that EDUCATION and self-empowerment is a much stronger force in the long run than instilling blanket fear

There is still also the stigma around who can be affected. Alot of the younger generations who were born during or after the pandemic of fhe 80's and 90's sometimes dont know that it can affect everyone. And studies have actually shown it has been on the rise in Heterosexual communitiea in first worls countries for quite a few years now. Purely because some still see it as a MSM issue. But world wide, it affects all sexualities evenly.

@emma66564 жыл бұрын
Can i just point out that it is better to refer to a person with HIV as a person with HIV. Not AIDS. As they are 2 different things. HIV can lead to AIDS when untreated, and yes he stated he was actually diagnosed with AIDS. But not all people living with HIV have AIDS. Having the diagnosis of AIDS is all about the immune system and how damaged it is, and if other infections or diseases are present because of the lack of immune system. Now that he is taking medication and his immune system is effectively working again (not perfect, and not as good as it once was, but better than at diagnosis) he is someone living life with HIV.
