Soft rock describes bands like Toto Chicago or Fleetwood Mac. Whitesnake were blues rock up to the 1987 record and Hard Rock with some glam afterwards. But it’s only logical to come to that conclusion if you only have listened to Here i go again or Is this love

So many of the great hair bands of the 80’s were made fun of for their hair and clothes. But as the years passed they all changed their tunes. Realizing how amazing these singers were and now they’re sorely missed and desperately needed today. The ballad rock of the 80’s were just on a different level and it to several decades later for people to see what it was and gave us. They were truly great musicians.

You made me smile when you talked about R 'n' B music because Whitesnake were termed to be Rhythm and Blues when they started out. They had a great pairing of guitarists Micky Moody and Bernie Marsden who were just phenomenal together. Back in the 80's I had the great fortune to get to see Micky do a lovely, intimate, solo session at a local rock club - just him sitting on a barstool with his guitar and an amp - proper musician doing musician things! I don't think I even had to pay over the normal cover charge to get in; he just did it because he wanted to play. He was one of the influences, along with David Gilmour and Tony Iommi on my own playing - but I never got to see if my playing would ever amount to anything as I was in a near-fatal motorcycle accident that came within a whisker of losing me my right arm and I have never been able to play well ever since (the timing is thrown off by the damage as I have to pivot from the elbow rather than the wrist). The last time I saw Whitesnake was when I won a competition for tickets from a radio show and it is a treasured memory of a wonderful night with my wife ... altho' she *so* wanted to take David home with us  I said that was fine as long as she found Tawny for me :D

After Deep Purple split up David Coverdale formed Whitesnake in 1978. Jon Lord keyboardist, and Ian Paice drummer from Deep Purple a bit later also joined David in Whitesnake. They were a Blues Based Rock Band as were most around that time. Micky Moody and Bernie Marsden joined as guitarists and Neil Murray on bass. There was some shuffling of band members throughout the years of the early lineup but Coverdale, Moody, and Marsden were consistently there through about 1984. David Coverdale and Bernie Marsden became writing partners on most of the songs throughout the early lineup. Then David decided to go after the American market which was the Heavy Metal/Glam Metal later referred to as Hair Metal or Hairband music. Most of what were to become Whitesnake’s biggest hits were re-recordings from the earlier lineup from 1978-1984, including “Here I Go Again”, and “Fool For Your Loving”. These were both Coverdale/Marsden songs. I personally prefer the earlier lineup and song versions. There are so many great songs from those early albums. “Don’t Break My Heart Again”, and one of my all time favorite songs is a beautiful song written by Coverdale that was on the 1980 album, Ready An’ Willing, “Blindman”. If you don’t ever do a reaction to it, please just listen and enjoy it. Another great song is from the 1979 album, Love Hunter, “Walking In the Shadow of the Blues”. “Blindman” An absolutely beautiful song! kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnfCmK2XaMpnb9ksi=9oXrRcLBZWoC59iD

At the beginning of the reaction, "power ballads" is the term you're looking for - when the hard rock / glam rock bands did a sentimental, slower song, it was considered a power ballad (that doesn't apply to this song, BTW). But "Is This Love" by the same band would apply. Most of the popular rock acts had at least one power ballad, and many of them were phenomenal songs! "Monster Ballads" was a collection sold via telemarketing in the late 90's that my friends and I bought, just to enjoy the great songs of some of the most popular acts of the late 80's and early 90's! You should have been alive then - you would have loved it. I can make recommendations if asked!

So many 80s bands filled their songs full of innuendo. Whitesnake were masters of this. “Slow and Easy” and “Slide It In” were amazing examples of this and great songs to boot. Dave and Tawny were dating at the time this video was made. I was so jealous of this man.

You can get lost in the 60's, 70's, 80's, and some of the 90's genres of music, there's SO MUCH. There was an aura, mystique, a realness and grab to it. It was the vocals, the instruments, the presence, that is gone, hard to think there will ever be such. It was in your face and good. I'll continue to drift back because, and I don't care who says what, today's stuff ain't go it.

this was my era, long hair, jeans and girls. Great music. David Coverdale was from the N E of England, I had a mate who went to the same school, he said he was greasy spotty but all the girls loved him lol. Lets get back to the 70s please

Tawny was imo the hottest thing to come out of the 80's. Lets just say she occupied a big space in my teenage brain. Drifter not twister. lol I believe the genre is hair-metal rock. It was very popular right up until grunge music happened. "More than Words" by Extreme had just hit and it was super popular. i loved it. Then "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana came out of nowhere (Seattle). I could not stand grunge music mainly because i hate change but more so that i could not understand the lyrics. I have since read the lyrics and still dont understand. I just felt bad for Extreme. They finally got a hit song and it was on top for about a week.
