Yes, the lyrics, but also the dank scene and flickering lights with his dark side and the music, the tune changes with each side, like opposite tones but the same type of rhythm, calm vs frantic . It’s a creative piece of performance art, a masterpiece. He calls is Bardcore and that is absolutely perfect. He is a modern day Bard, for sure.

What a great thing to say "I'm not sure I want to break down technique on this because I feel like the message is so much more powerful." I think that from a psychological perspective, "hope" is a universal truth and to have hope means you are in a shit situation. Hope is all in on a pair of 2's and we've all been there. So when a person sings of hope in an articulate and artistic expression, it's hits hard. Edit: Listen to "Violets Tale." Thats a peformance.

A lot of young people had that reaction in the early 90s with Kurt Cobain and Nirvana. It was dark, off-putting, raw, challenging, self-examination kind of music. After a decade of vapid hip-to-be-square "ra-ra" music, it was like "My God, someone's finally talking Truth about life." Thank you for your genuine, heartfelt reaction. “Hi Ren" is the song that put Ren on everyone's radar since December; it went viral and has garnered more than 6 million views since its debut, but he has been creating great music for more than ten years. Ren’s music videos are generally recorded live, often in a single take, although not necessarily the first take, and from various camera angles. His release, "Sick Boi," is almost another chapter to "Hi Ren." Many of Ren’s songs resonate with people because he addresses struggles that many others face every day. Ren plays multiple instruments (acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, piano, drums), has impressive vocals, is an excellent storyteller, and is quite the philosopher and poet. He is considered by many a modern bard; he calls his music “bardcore.” Ren’s earliest recordings on KZbin are from his time in a band called “Trick The Fox,” consisting of Ren and his buddies Charlie and Tommy. Unfortunately, the band performed only briefly due to Ren’s onset of health issues. They are very talented. A fun clip to watch is “The Mash Up.” Ren’s trilogy "The Tale of Jenny/Screech/Violet" has been likened to a Shakespearean tragedy and is a prime example of his genius; it is a master’s class in storytelling and also showcases his guitar skills. The three acts are haunting, and the conclusion will catch you off guard. The trilogy needs to be watched in the order given, as this is the flow of the storyline and is best watched as a whole rather than piecemeal. Ren’s collaborations with Chinchilla (“Chalk Outlines,” “How to Be Me,” “Sexual Healing,” “One Dance/Drunk in Love”) are beautiful and showcase his singing voice. His live music videos are especially impressive. Ren's personal reflections are threaded through many of his songs; "Insomnia," "Depression," “Diazepam," “Penitence,” “Dear God,” “Heretic,” “Dominos,” his "Freckled Angels" album, just to name a few, all deserve a listen. His song "Money Game" (Part I & II) is another recommendation, although it is less of a personal song than it is an indictment of greed and the resulting injustices in this world. Ren’s Hip Hop/Rap style songs are all worth checking out if you enjoy this genre; they are pretty amazing. Check out “The Hunger,” “Genesis,” “What You Want,” “Losing it (FISHER rap retake),” “Right here, right now (Fatboy Slim one shot retake),” "Life is Funny," “Love Music (Parts 1, 2, and 3),” “Crucify Your Culture,” “Power,” and his latest release, “Bittersweet symphony (The Verve retake).” As I recently discovered, Ren also recorded a cover of “Can't Help Falling In Love (Elvis Cover),” that is simply beautiful. Then there are his performances with Sam Tompkins (“Blind Eyed,” “Earned it /Mans World / Falling,” “Walking on the moon/No Diggity”), Eden Nash (“Humble,” “Ocean”), Bibi (“Crutch,” “Ahiahiaoha”), Molly McKinna (“Penitence”), his former bandmate, Romain Axisa (“French Song”), which are all great. "The Big Push" busking sessions, concerts, and live recordings all are awesome and well worth checking out. Their covers of "I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop," "Wade in the Water/Nina Simone/Trouble so Hard," "An Englishman in New York," “Bongo Bong,” “War Pigs,” the songs "Oh My Woman," “Swan Song,” “Sweet Little Lady," "It's Alright," "Watch Out," “Dignity,” and so many others are equally impressive. In anticipation of his stay in Canada for more treatments, Ren prepared some music ahead of time to be released over the next six months that he expects to be gone. He released “Sick Boi” and “Bittersweet Symphony (The Verve retake),” which is another masterful work. Ren has hinted that he might release his newest song on March 29, which is his birthday.

Julia, I've never seen your reactions before. Especially appreciated the written notes as we went along, allowing the performance to play out with minimal interruptions. Those combined with watching your face told me that you felt every emotion I did when I first came across this masterpiece. The monologue at the end, is autobiographical. He was ill from 17 for about a decade with undiagnosed Lyme disease. The psychosis was part of the symptoms. Finally, he's getting some treatment in Canada, and hopefully can be restored to health. At one point you mentioned this was like a whole story....... and so, from here you really MUST go to Jenny & Screech, a trilogy telling one story complete, and what a story. The ending will surprise and shock. It's a piece of art. From there, you can find some of his more mainstream stuff, leading the busking band The Big Push. Like so many others, I found myself deeply moved when first I heard this perhaps a month ago. Since then, I have listened to it dozens of times as I watched others react. It still moves me every time, but how I've been moved has changed as I have taken in other reactions, and comments, as well as the piece itself. People whose musical preferences vary wildly respond to it, and people from strikingly disparate demographic backgrounds. The battle between two sides of ourselves seems to be archetypal. And Ren's resolution of this battle is profound: to relax, to soften, to learn how to dance. I very much appreciate your reaction -- another human with a substantial analytic faculty struggling to stay in that role even as their emotions surge during Ren's performance. I appreciate your articulation of musical and vocal technique Ren uses to connect, and to communicate. There's a filmmaker who has reacted to 'Hi Ren" and comments on visual aspects of the work. There are reactions by psychotherapists, by a neurologist, by a psychiatric nurse, by a professor of literature. Just as 'Hi Ren' is powerful not only because of lyrical content -- but by all the ways his use of his voice, of his guitar, of his rapid seamless switches between characters with their own postures and tones, of the lighting and the camerawork to reinforce the communication taking place -- so do the various reactors reinforce his message as "Hi Ren" elicits layered and nuanced responses from them. After I first heard 'Hi Ren,' I was loathe to watch other work Ren has available, because I thought it was bound to be a let-down and I wanted to protect the purity of my initial response. However, as the weeks have passed, I've fallen down "the rabbit-hole" of Ren's solo work, his duets with Chinchilla and with Sam Tompkin, and busking performances with a band called 'The Big Push." My respect has only grown for the talent of the artist and for the courage with which he displays his vulnerability -- and for the reactors whose own vulnerability, authenticity, and expertise he seems to elicit. The personal advice I take from this song is in that dance metaphor in the ending monologue. The more you resist, the more you frustrate yourself about your inability to change things. I can let a lot roll off my back, but one of my biggest issues is a cycle of trying to find answers to something I don't have answers to. I'm now actively trying to avoid overthinking my problems. It's not something I can do for societal issues that depress me because it feels too much like apathy, but actively staying out of my head is very helpful for more personal mental issues.

Try somatic and nonverbal therapy. It does not require mental/verbal articulation to heal your nervous system and the old wounds carried deep in your tissues. Often, that is a great way to begin to get a base line, and to be able to climb out of the old grooves in the record of inner torment. ~Peace~

Ren had described his music as 'bardcore'. As you said, this was not really a song, but a play of sorts. Every time I hear this, I get choked up. The thing is that I've been listening to it at least once every day for the past few weeks. I love how the intensity keeps increasing throughout the performance. IMHO, it ends with an exclamation point. The best part is when he referred to this back and forth as a pendulum, and it is like an eternal dance. No matter how bad things seem to get, it will get better if we are persistent. Never give up hope.

@@jayhop I think their point is when the reactor pauses the video is breaks the flow for the reactor themselves, not really the people watching. We all have our demons where we fight with our whole live, sometimes less, sometimes more but we all have them and with this video and song I learned, after 52 years of living, that we are not alone with them and not like parents of my generations taught us: be hard! That's totally wrong. Mental illness is an illness as every other illness which is there in the world and we must talk about it and not ignore. "We must not forget that we are humans!" Thank you Julia for your reaction and even for everything you said.

This is a masterpiece of modern art. I have struggled with mental health my entire life. Although it has mostly manifested itself in depression, I have the genetic pre-disposition for schizophrenia, bi-polar, and multiple personality disorder. These things loom over me constantly, a constant reminder that even if my depression gets better, there's something much worse that could await me in the future. As an ex-vangelical...someone who grew up in the church, and as someone who has struggled with mental health, I deeply relate to the dichotomy of self represented in this video. "The pendulum between good and evil" (paraphrase). I have broken away from the religion of my parents and now as an adult, I am realizing that mental health and religion are intertwined. I will always be fighting a battle within my mind and it's art like this that makes me not feel alone.

I've struggled with mental health issues since my teens. I'm almost 36 now and it has been and always will be a daily struggle... Also, as a musician i can definitely relate to his doubts about his music and his legacy he'll leave behind and doing something worthwhile with his life and have people remember him once he's gone.. His bit about "the brighter the light shown the darker the shadow it cast" is very true. One day you feel great like you can take on the world and then the next day you dont even have the will to get out of bed... I feel like most people can relate to this song. Everyone has the internal battle with oneself. The eternal never ending dance inside your head. And if you say you don't, then you're in denial... I had never heard of this artist until now but I've looked him up and will be listening to more of his stuff. We need more artists that address the issue of mental health. The whole reason behind music is to make one feel emotion and change moods. Music in itself is inherently directly linked with mental health... I've been listening to this song on repeat for the past 30 minutes whole writing this comment. For anyone struggling with mental health issues, don't give up. on the days when you feel the world is against you, remember that It's not a bad life... just a bad day. And things will get better.

The introduction of the third voice brought such an overwhelming sense relief from the uncertainty that was so quickly and deeply established from the start. It introduced a sense of enlightenment (and confidence) as if to say.. 'If this demon hasn't taken control at the moment of greatest weakness, perhaps, as individuals, we are more powerful than we once fooled ourselves into not believing'. Wisdom and maturity appeared to reveal the swinging pendulum cycles of vulnerability/insecurities leading and optimism/hope. That reversal towards negativity loses its power to manipulate and intimidate once we recognize the familiar path that we have traveled before. It's the novel surprises and struggles that push the limits of sanity ‐‐ and, subsequently, teach us the most critically important lessons in life that ultimately define us as individuals. What to believe? Who to trust? Things to avoid? It's all a reflection of the development of that third voice. The one that swoops in to silence the critical side of ourselves by disproving the insanity a younger version of ourselves fell into the trap of believing. Incredibly talented lyricism and production to so eloquently capture and outwardly present the internal power struggle.

Having been a self taught guitarist for over a decade a little bit younger than Ren who listens to almost any genre of music I can think of.... I hear you express in technical terms why all of these juxtapositions of musical techniques help evoke certain emotions in complex ways. Without a grounded and solid knowledge of music theory can you or how is it possible otherwise to get a grasp of what exactly it is that creates these feelings? Intuitively I can identify most of it from hearing so much music but I just don't have the language or lexicon to be able to describe it. I feel if I even had a crude way of grasping this it would be something I could use as building blocks for my own music. Ren's music is really incredible and aside from the raw emotion that shines through you can see a very integrated understanding of what works where and how to use it properly to let those raw emotions flow through it. Anyone wiser than me I'd drink any advice you have here.
