"I'm Not Into Men" 🇯🇲 (#97)

Most people who fly into Montego Bay have a fun weekend at their resort, lounging on the beach and riding jetskis. Not me though. To get my adrenaline rush, I had to go and witness something pretty crazy. There’s a spot you can climb to that puts you just outside the runway of the airport in Montego Bay, and from there you can see planes landing right over your head. That would be the adventure for the day. Along the way, I met some interesting people.

Meanwhile, if you go to San Andres, a Colombian island in the Caribbean, you can be at the end of the runway with the planes taking off and landing over your head, in a much more accessible spot right on the beach.

Stay safe. Be aware that Jamaica has a lot of anti-gay laws on the books, and being perceived as that there, especially if openly expressing it/public displays of affection can and has led to violent reactions, which can, and have been met with indifference or even encouragement/arrest/participation by police. It's one of the least gay-friendly countries in the world so... if you are gay proceed with due caution. As I understand it gay men are in greater danger, but it would still be wise to be quiet about it.

I’ve only been out of the United States one time and that one time, I went to Jamaica! I stayed in Montego Bay because I was young(22) and dumb and didn’t know any better. I had just settled an auto accident lawsuit that took 5 years to settle and wanted my first vacation. I fell in love! It’s heaven on Earth and I didn’t want to leave!! That’s the last time I had $$ to travel outside the US. I’m DYING to travel again because of the pandemic. @Sabbatical You are inspiring me to research how to travel to Jamaica and stay in non-touristy areas as cheaply as I can so I can get a ballpark figure. I’d probably want to travel the island a bit like you have done. My heart just aches to go back! The people are so friendly and down to earth and kind! I HAVE to find a way to get back. There's another place where people go to to be up close to the runway and the jet engine fumes literally blows them back across the street onto the beach. The difference is that there is a beautiful beach right behind the runway and the planes come in so low. I think it's in Europe, maybe Spain. Does anyone remember where this is? It's a big tourist attraction. Anyway big up Jamaica. My mother is from Jamaica and yes, there are white Jamaicans too. 🇯🇲

Thank you for bringing up all my memories of Jamaica. Did business there for 2 years. Those years were both fun and turbulent. The absolutely greatest majority of Jamaicans were the BEST and kindest people. MoBay was touristy in the 80's and 90's, still is. I am sorry you did not show the harbor in Port Antonio or Admiral Island. Both beautiful spots. With regards to your hanger on, he showed disrespect for the lady and for our collective intelligence. He was a grifter, no a 'medical massage therapist', a man with "16 children with 4 sets of twins", and a certainly not a resident of "penthouses in Calgary and Edmonto by the Airport". His b.s. and patter had an edge unlike the pleasant walk and talk one experiences in Jamaica. Having said all that visit Jamaica when you can and make sure you see: The old Synagogue in Kingston (old in the Western Hemisphere) Bob Marley.....everything Tinson Pen outdoor stalls Jerk pork at Boston Beach The Hibiscus Lodge in Ocho Rios for dinner on the terrace Dunn's River fall. Very touristy...get there by cab and pay general admission and ENJOY! Horse ride to the top of the mountain at Prospect Plantation A swim in Trelawny And if budget is issue Trident Hotel Be safe, exercise 'smart care' and enjoy. Walk good Tommy! Night on the White River (if it still runs)

And in Jamaïca, there was this incredible massage therapist whose father was a Spaniard that unfortunately died in 2017. He showed me the airport runaway that he had known since he was a child and where he used to get thrown against the waves by the blow coming from the plane engines. As we were trying to catch one of those blows, he told me that he loved his job so much but that he would only massage female Jamaïcans or male and female foreigners indiscriminately so as to make money and feed his sixteen kids, among which, eight happened to be twins, that is, twelve successful fertilisations of a woman that he duly acknowledged at some point in his life. He also had an expertise in making love to women by using a gentle touch instead of brutally scrubing against their bodies like most of his fellows do, he told. The thing is that this guy developed a passion to airports to a point that he went to live in a penthouse nearby Edmonton (Calgary) airport where he could monitor the landings from that vantage. Then when _badness_ fell to him and took away his wealth, he simply decided to return to his native Jamaïca. One love.
