On the memory management discussed here 11:39 It's a little bit more complex, Android apps are definitely written in JVM compatible bytes code ( Java/Kotlin targets), but when installed the code is transformed to device native code either ARM-V7/V8, etc, .... and this is true since Android 4.4 Kitkat The old Android architecture used Dalvik which was a little bit similar to what is explained in the video but now, with changes introduced in ART ( Android Runtime ), it's a mix of JIT and AOT. IMHO the feeling of fluidity of apps these days depend highly on how optimized they were made, independent of the OS they are running on. I think Apple does a good job of optimizing aggressively their native apps and since they control both the hardware and software, there's a lot more that goes on in internal direct machine code APIs that are not exposed to app developers ( My guess )

I drive a car nearly every day but I can't tell you how many cylinders are in it, what type of air conditioning unit it has, or what its high speed is. Whenever someone calls me out on this, I ask them what chipset their phone is, but I don't do it as an insult, it's a simile. We all use technology every day that we don't know how it works. It's OK.
@lelouchlamperouge82864 жыл бұрын
@@gravytrainwithbiscuitwheels You should know how many cylinders your car engine has just as much as you should know what the specs of your computer are. A phone's specs don't matter to most people any further than how much storage is in it. When it comes to computers, you want something fast/reliable, you should know the specs. When it comes to cars, you should know what engine your getting for god's sake. Are you getting some trash 4 cylinder engine? Maybe a 4 cylinder with turbo boost technology? Or are you spending extra cash on a 6 cylinder? Or maybe you have no idea and overpaid for a car that has trash specs but you paid without knowing.
@lelouchlamperouge82864 жыл бұрын
@@pappbenedek8422 That's not my opinion. If you want to make informed decisions about what you're buying, it is simply a requirement. If you don't know something as basic as how many cylinders your car's engine has, how do you know if you're paying a good price or not? Yes, I don't really care about my phone's hardware - and I'm sure someone out there does. Different uses. A car is not such a minor purchase that you can say, "Well, I don't care what the car is rocking" as you get ripped off thousands of dollars. And obviously some people will look at specs for tablets and such because they need the power. If you're buying a computer, you should know the specs for the same reason you should know the specs of a car - to make informed decisions about how much you're going to be spending for what you'll be receiving. I don't understand why you're arguing about this. Would you rather blindly choose between computer A and B, or know which one actually makes more sense to buy? How about you take the sales representatives word for it that the extra $1000 for computer B is *definitely* gonna give you what you need :)
@riley_oneill4 жыл бұрын
@@lelouchlamperouge8286 Eh, it would be more like comparing a Honda Civic and Toyota Carolla based on gear ratios of the transmission, engine compression, and a bunch of other specs which have no bearing if one car is better at taking you to work every day. In the end its going to be rather subjective as to what car you want to live with. I have been around these Mac vs PC arguments for over 20 years now and its all pointless, your computer's only purpose is to work for you. In the video he mentions that his editor prefers working on PC, so that is what he uses, but others prefer working on Mac. The annual labor cost of a full time editor is going to be far more expensive than either computer and whatever makes that editor work 'best' is going to be the way to go. If you already have a preferred eco system you really need a good reason to switch from one to the other. The Mac vs PC arguments are stupid because they are never a compelling reason for users to switch. For a production house of pretty much any kind, the computer hardware will be a rather minor expense compared to other expenses. $10,000 for a computer is a lot, but so is $200,000 for a camera rig. There are productions that have a six figure per day expense, the computer becomes irrelevant.

I can personally not afford to pay 10K for a Mac (or PC for that matter), but (because of all the problems I kept having with multiple high-end and optimized PC builds) switched to mac (a second market Mac Pro mid 2010) for my music productions, to test if this would do the trick. I honestly will never go back to PC for my music productions. Never a performance issue, literally never had a crash, didn't had to upgrade anything in years. For anything else I use PC's here. So I totally agree with the final statement of this video. It's what works for you. I couldn't care less if one of my cheaper PC's will utterly outperform my old Mac on so many levels. It's no longer important if I have to pay more for a specific machine, if it means I can work without ANY issues day in day out for years and years. In the end (def if you run a business), you work with hardware that works for you. :) I think that simply is the point many people find hard to understand.

@@AndriesdeHaan I think everything you said is a generalization that people make about consistency and optimization not favoring PC's. The reason ppl are adamant about Mac's isn't solely the price discrepancy, it's the fact that Apple seldom makes an effort and expecting a significant jump in quality/performance with relation to their price points is wishful thinking.. I totally understand music production being better for you on macOS - by all means use their products if thats your thing but outside of a few niches their product lineup is a joke. I've spent close to 10k on macs but after building a PC a year 1/2 ago I'll likely never buy another mac again unless they make significant improvements to the Macbook Pro. The complacency of loyal apple users is what allows them to get away with things they shouldn't get away with.

In the end it turned out to work better for me. :) I paid $1400 for it, so it was also not really that crazy compared to some of my PC's. I don't care much about Apple products in general. For your situation a PC turned out to be a better solution, for my music-situation it turned out to be a Mac. I mean yes there is some issues with the keyboard that are totally my own fault (I was trying to clean some dust/lint under the keys, and did something [I'm not sure exactly what] such that the number 1 key doesn't work or keeps getting pressed when its not touched & also a couple other keys need the caps replaced -- but these issues was easily solved by substituting a wireless Bluetooth keyboard instead) and also, about 1/2 of the hinge holding the screen attached to the keyboard cracked and broke off (though I don't know when or how) so I usually have to lean the back of the screen up against something (like the arm of the couch) when using it, until I can take it in to get fixed once this COVID situation is over or at least under better control. But other than these 2 issues (the keyboard, and the screen) my 7 year old MacBook Pro is still BLAZING fast compared to even my BEST Windows PC on the FIRST or SECOND day I had it. Mac is like NIGHT and DAY compared to PC and I will NEVER go back to PC, and even if I can't afford a new Mac, I'd rather buy a 2nd-hand used or refurbished Mac than go back to Microsuck Windows buggy virus-ridden crap!

(been using PC´s since swapping my Amiga 4000 for a Pentium 90 box, and using a Mac at work since the PowerPC days, or around ca. 1993) Ever since Microsoft put the ink/tablet pen support into windows natively, using a wacom or any drawing tablet has become a clusterfuck of driver issues, unresponsive detection of pen strokes and a plethora of other issues. Sometimes you get lucky and everything works fine on the PC with a wacom tablet, but most times its constant little issues that drive you insane in the end. Also, a business really does not care if a computer workstation is 4000 or 11000 dollars in the long run. Issues and bad support over time costs far more than that. Apple has been known to be very good in this regard and that is one of the main reasons professionals choose the platform. The same reason large scale businesses buy pre-made HP machines and the like. Custom building each machine in a large office is not cost effective in the long run when you include having to have more tech support staff and work loss if a machine goes bad. I have never understood this bad blood from pc users towards the macs to be honest, since most of the comments come from hobbyists and amateur/low end professionals which will always be looking at bang for the buck on purchase rather than long term. But yes, I do agree that the mac pro base model could have been much better set up when it comes to cpu and gpu specs given the price, but the hassle free, super silent and consistently reliable performance of the machine is a large plus in a work heavy pro environment. Also... no self respecting professional studio will use a hackintosh due to support issues.. That being said.. I am a PC man, which is why I have one at home. But I understand why the mac is as popular as it is.

@@Rolenz Wrong. Most professionals use macbooks because their company will provide them. And their company won't just provide them because "they win out on support over time" (that shit doesn't even make much sense lol), it's because Apple does one really smart thing: it makes contracts with a lot of big/med/small sized companies to sell them macbooks with a relatively good discount, and include a few free services with them. The majority of people working on them don't do it because "it's superior" (talking about dev/qa mostly), but because it's provided. Indeed, at my company (more than 1k employees), the majority of them hate their provided macs. Some companies are actually starting to deny the apple contracts nowadays though, because their hardware has way too many issues and breaks way too often, and while the contracts usually offer repair services, the costs pile up way too much. At my workplace mac users constantly have issues with their software, random reboots, the top touch bar thing keeps bugging out and borderline breaking, the touchpad becomes unresponsive, their updates takes ages, they randomly lose their configurations, and lately more often than not the macos upgrades break everything lol. It's so bad that they legit have to replace A LOT of them after even just one year. Meanwhile, us PC guys work more or less the same thing on windows machines that run 24/7 and are having none of the issues the mac crowd is having. And now with WSL2 on win10 the need for the "macos cli" has become a joke lol. You don't need a half and half like macos when you can have the best GUI (windows) and the best CLI (linux) running natively.

Very true, but the question becomes what other scenarios you're thinking of in which those spec differences will produce noticeable results. Certainly not standard web browsing and productivity. If you're going to use the Mac Pro JUST for Final Cut Pro and standard tasks, it becomes a good option. And surely the engineering of the casing deserves some weight. It does make things easier. Not saying it's overall a better computer, but there's definitely some market where it's the better choice, even if niche.

Nathan very niche indeed. I personally use macs for 12 years now with xcode, final cut pro and some logic pro which are very popular amongst pros. I recently dumped most adobe products in favor of affinity and it makes a world of difference even on 4-5year old hardware. So I would say software optimization is what makes a system work, not really the specs. I might be biased but the results are what's important.

Unfortunately porting that bloat OS to a decent kernel and getting it out to the public for mass consumption will take forever. It may not even be feasible when you compare time vs benefit. Meanwhile Apple’s eco system runs natively on a multitude of architectures and is built on a modern kernel. macOS running on ARM now outperforms Windows on an x86 platform. @InsaneAudioMediaJunk4 жыл бұрын
As someone who does compositing in Fusion I'm not all that happy about the UI change this integration brought. We now can't really can't customise out layout and constantly hunt functions in menus that used to be in the main UI. Also, the performance overhead of running resolve is staggering with high rez projects, you reach the limits of your hardware way faster, and stability starts to go downhill. So for specialist work, standalone Fusion is still absolutely vital. Although maybe Motion isn't used all that much for specialist work, so that point may be moot.
@Nattodayy4 жыл бұрын
Julien Rodewald I agree the UI in Fusion could use some work. Creating Fusion titles is kind of a nightmare to me. However, the inspector panel looks incredibly similar to Motion. Regarding speciality work, Motion can handle quiet a bit. Advanced keyframing with expressions (behaviors), 3D text, tracking, simulations, etc. With MotionVFX’s MO2, you can do complex 3D animations at the level of Elements 3D. And a lot this runs smooth on even a 13in MacBook Pro. I’ve been hoping Fcpx would integrate Motion as a workflow extension (kind of like a floating hud). I think this would help get more people into motion graphics and animations.

@tj4724 жыл бұрын
I was also about to comment regarding this. You're right. ART has been used in a long time. The fluidity of iOS has more to do with with its superior hardware rather than software alone. iOS 12 upgrade proved that previous versions were not fully optimized for the hardware.

This was a really interesting video. As you noted, people don't really buy Macs purely for the raw hardware performance, especially with their higher-end lines which they tend to update less frequently. Simultaneously, they work extremely well with the software that many of their targeted users prefer and so pure benchmarks aren't really an apples-to-apples comparison...no differently than with HPC, it's not just about what hardware you have or synthetic benchmarks, but how efficiently you can utilize it in real-world operations (e.g., LINPACK is not necessarily a reliable predictor of application-specific productivity.) The easy, reliable, and secure integration of their environment is also a strong selling point, as is historically robust software to pair with many prosumer devices. That said, you do pay a price for it, you are often limited in selection, and in many instances you are very limited in upgrade options. And with the exception of the Mac Pro, Apple devices also tend to have really poor repairability, and some of the design choices that have led to poor repairability are very questionable. There are other situations where a Windows workstation is a superior choice in every respect and there are so many great options out there, both custom and preconfigured. At the end of the day, it definitely is about which one is going to make you work most efficiently and bank that money. I do wish macOS and Windows 10 would both slow down a bit in their release cycle. Both Apple and Microsoft move so fast now with OS updates and adding "new features" that it often leads to annoying bugs and glitches that they don't even have time to fix before the next release. We don't need an entirely new OS every couple of months. We do need an OS with robust reliability and I think both have suffered as a result of pushing out so many new features on such a tight schedule.

Realistically, the average person just needs some bare bones ~$700 computer to do everything they're going to do anyway. Stop wasting money on a freaking name and just get a PC. I also find it completely hilarious that a completely blinged out PC, top of the line hardware and custom water loops, RGB, etc, costs LESS than the Mac. As in, we completely capped out the PC's hardware, but in order to make the price point comparable, we added all the bells and whistles we could...AND IT WAS STILL CHEAPER. I've always heard similar things about Macs. If you're the small percentage of Mac owners who are doing professional video editing then you will see a decent gain in the software render time while seeing severe losses for everything else, and everyone else owning one had to first "buy into the idea" before the absurd monetary difference began to make sense. Which I only thought of because I drive by a Starbucks every day that has a decent outdoor patio area and nearly everyone there with a laptop seem to only use MacBooks...

I like Mac OS much more than Windows for a lot of reasons. I also like the MacBook Pro (mostly because of the awesome track pad) more than any other laptop I've used. I use both Macs and PCs on a regular basis. The thing about the "absurd monetary difference" is: 1) It's often not as absurd as people claim. Flagship phones have been nearly the same price for almost a decade now. Flagship laptops are also not that different in price. 2) Computers are such a good value these days that they easily justify their price. The personal computer became popular in the 80s. That means computers offered enough functionality at a cheap enough price that it made sense for lots of people to start buying their own computer. Since the 80s, computers have gotten millions of times more powerful and far more capable for the same price. They're a ridiculous value no matter which brand you get. Just stop worrying about other people's preferences. If I buy a $3k laptop every 4 years, that's $62.50/month. That doesn't even come close to how much I spend on food or rent. You may as well complain about me having the gall to buy name brand Oreos instead of the store-brand knock offs at half the price! While the attempt to creative a niche for Apple here should be lauded for its honesty, I still think the argument for the Mac ultimately fails, and fails badly. Essentially, what FCP demonstrated was that if you intend to *exclusively* use a machine for only one of the small number of tasks that Apple has optimized a small number of applications to enable, you can make a Mac Pro.... about as fast as an equivalently-priced PC would be, while still being absolutely massively slower at literally everything else. Even acknowledging that such machines are probably usually going to be purchased with particular tasks in mind, "exclusively" is a big word, especially when it pigeonholes you into only one possible software tool for the entire life of the machine (so if Adobe Premier gets some amazing new features in 3 years you're SOL on using it), and especially when there isn't a performance advantage anyways - 842 vs 853 is a not a performance edge; it's just testing variance, and well within margin of error (as in, even if the Mac was 1.3% faster, it would take a very large number of trials to even demonstrate it and it's not a real-world advantage at all) Buying the PC affords, at bare minimum, the same level of performance, massively more performance in most tasks and most applications for a given task, and the flexibility to use an $11,000 machine to do more than one thing, even if it's something as simple as adding a new tool into a workflow or just doing some gaming on the side - I think we know what's going to win between a 2080Ti and an Radeon Pro Vega 2 - this is ESPECIALLY true given that the PC could have been built for less flash and a lot more performance, at which point even using FCP result in a loss for Apple

Minor correction, but Android apps do not run on the JVM, but on a completely different ART (Android Runtime) and is compiled to Dalvik Bytecode and not Java bytecode. Also, it’s a little misleading to say Android apps aren’t compiled to be native, since almost all major apps do have native (C/C++) components that do not run on ART. Additionally, ART utilizes ahead of time compilation (AOT) to compile from Dalvik bytecode to a native binary and a JIT that dynamically recompiles the native binary code after several runs to further optimize. Although memory usage, as you said is an issue, but the Android team has done an amazing job optimizing-you may find that many apps, for example, launch faster on an Android flagship with significantly lower CPU performance compared to the iphone.

Mac Pro: For everyone who wants a 11K Cheesegrater with wheels.
@cehaem24 жыл бұрын
I´ll tell you a secret. Most people that buy Mac Pros order way more beefier configurations because they need them for work, eg. 4k video post processing. And this is where thing start looking different. A friend of mine work at a PR agency. When the new Mac Pro came out they ordered two with Afterburner cards just for that purpose.
@cehaem24 жыл бұрын
@Foaad Hisham if you are a pro price doesn't matter. If you need the horse power, you pay for it. Plus if you're looking at high end workstations, prices are similar. You need to stop comparing that machine to your pc that you cobbled together at home. If you are buying a Mac Pro you go big otherwise there's no point in investing that kind of money. $15k buy you a fairly basic configuration. If you invest more, you get some muscle, but it ain't hardware for folks like you and me.

You just earned a sub! Even as a PC team fellow, I must say that I like the way you made the benchmark and the comparison. And I absolutely agree with the fact that a PC is after all just means to an end. But, I must say, I personally hate Apple's company policies over many matters such as pricing, marketing and repairs. So I shall remain a PC team fellow until that changes.
@chrismarinohardin99293 жыл бұрын
I have really mixed feelings TBH. I hate Apple’s hardware policies (repair, primarily), but I love their software policies (particularly privacy focus). Apple’s privacy stances are SO much better than everyone else’s. They do use it to justify their hardware premium- they don’t monetize the user or collect user data and even block third parties from collecting user data- but the hardware premium is SO high that it’s hard to say if it really justifies it. I tend to buy Apple laptops (not really repairable anyway and I notice the build quality differences) and build my own desktops.

@@ytfeelslikenorthkorea what do you mean you might die in a year? No clue about the reasons but don't be so pessimistic! As for the dilemma... I'd say it's pretty simple. MacOS is for people who want to be safe and have an easy to use environment at the cost of money and freedom, Linux is ultimate freedom but poorly supported by many applications and hard to use, while Windows is a way in between costing little compared to Apple, giving significant freedom and being relatively easy to use (especially the latest versions). The biggest problem with windows being security. 95% of viruses target windows after all.

Nice video. From a 3D artist perspective, in 2020 the Apple computer line up isn't even in the conversation due to several self imposed hardware incompatibilities. The only workable options are Linux (Redhat) or Windows. Some of the bigger 3D renderers are even dropping support for the Mac altogether....
