I am a kiwi/Australian woman who first went to Kelantan 40+ years ago... I was definitely the first orang putih woman to visit the kampongs in Kelantan. Istana is the palace, and yes men need to wear long pants to go into the mosques (not a temple!), women also need to cover arms and head. I am looking forward to going back to Kelantan this year. People are very friendly but often shy, just try to talk to people and make friends..

I was born and raised in Kelantan, yeah its very rare to see orang putih there. We are not only shy with foreigners but also shy with people from other states bc we don't speak a standard language, we speak a dialect that is sometimes difficult to understand. When i moved to KL, i felt like i came out of the cave, felt more open, more civilized 🥴. Not saying Kelantan is bad, just lack of competent leaders, lack of better management and averagely people there doesn't want to develop.

@@SteveSentosa I told my experience, I didn't put down the state i grew up in. I grew up in Gua Musang, i had great childhood memories there. When i was a teen, i moved to Machang, that's where my nightmare started. That state is horrible, dirty, the rats are huge like cats, the people there are very rude, i'm not only bullied everyday at school but outside of school i'm also bullied. When i was in the house, i caught some people lurking in the window many times. I don't feel safe there 😔. The social problems in Kelantan are very serious. When i entered University, i didn't return to Kelantan. That place changed me from happy to trauma.

The local food in Kelantan is the best !! There is a litter problem here as you can probably see, yes you definatly need a some form of own transport to explore around this part of Malay, yes i think the children are on the motorbikes as soon as they can walk!! That's a musem Ben. Come and stay with us Ben if your hungry & tired. If there is some way we can contact you other than on here! We can come and pick you up ! There is a floating market somewhere i think its on the Thailand border, open friday and sat. Kota Baru means Newcastle & i belive there is a place called London, yes there is a lot of History here. Most people speak English.

Welcome to Kelantan. Take the good, leave the bad. There is an American 'mat saleh' who lived in Kubang Kerian for more than 10 years. My children learn Arabic with him. He married a Malaysian woman. There are several "mat saleh" students at Universiti Sains Malaysia Kubang Kerian Health Campus. You can watch KZbinr Alana Dunsmore from Scotland who married a man from Kelantan. Our king also married a 'mat saleh' woman 😊

A Irish bachelor school teacher by the name of Mr Raymond Hall. He used to stay in Kota Bharu until his retirement back in the 70s. He had a house near to the Sultan Ismail secondary school for which he accomodates many rural students. Not so sure whether it is still there now.

I was briefly in that town (1 night) back in 2001 but did not have a chance to do or see anything. I was there to join a marine seismograph survey ship after traveling 20 something hours from Houston, TX. All I could do was to go straight to bed for a few hours then I managed to get something to eat. My employer had a contract with Petronas oil company to do oil exploration somewhere offshore Kota Bharu. The food in Malaysia is fantastic and cheap if you appreciate "Malay, Chinese, & Indian food" in which I do.

even though kelantan is often teased as the "backward" state, or even the hillbilly state, it is actually a land of contrasts. the most enlightened, westernised, liberal people also emerge from kelantan soil! kelantan is rather rich in history, it has historical and cultural ties to java in indonesia and also to vietnam. islam largely came to java, indonesia, as a result of missionary princes from kelantan, as well as its sister state patani which was annexed by thailand, as well as their larger sister state champa which is today south vietnam.

I find to combat jetlag after a long flight to Malaysia is to stay awake until 9pm the next day, then crash till 6am. Wake and drink lots of electrolytes all day. Seems to be the jetlag hair-o-the-dog for me. Wear a wide brim hat, man. And breathable fabric. You'll have better temperature regulation. To go into a masjid just wear long board shorts that cover from the navel to the knees. Technically you could go in shirtless as long as you have that region covered. The safety you feel is actually part of the Malay kampung (village) culture. People tend to stick to rules within because you don't want kampung justice. Be honest, you ordered another mixed grill over grab off camera didn't you 😀

Kelantan while being more disorganised and having a larger Malay majority than other places, the way of life isn't that different from other parts of West Malaysia. Many people would still speak English well as they go through the exact same education system as everywhere else. Also fluency in Thai language is much more common there too. Coming from mainland Penang i feel a lot of nostalgia in Kelantan, many places have vibes that remind me of the 90s

Well in KB, sorry u have to spend lots walking, don't get lost. The women here are active in earning a living espically at the siti khatijah market, the men on the other hand, wasting lives away, chatting, not working n smoking. A bad moral example to the youngsters. U can hardly get grab too.

ohh man...wt freakin h are u even doin there 😂 ?? at best, thats like a bronx/manhanttan guy visiting rustic upstate NY albany or rochester or somethin. Not a whole lot of landscapes there tbh, sure aint nothin to see. but kelantan is the home-base for traditional cultural stuff ie the traditional kite, the batik textile clothing, silverware, and a whole bunch of Malay dishes (infused with Thai influences). Maybe check out the Leaning Buddha statute (ask the locals). im originally from these parts, so yeah.

Nasi kandar is not a thing there. It's not really their taste. They love "budu" more than curry. And I doubt the authenticity of their nasi kandar. Just look at the Nasi Kandar sign 37:21 Nasi Kandar KB SELERA MELAYU (literally mean "Malay taste") 😆 *Budu = fermented fish (anchovies) sauce. You need to try that one with some chili

dont worry. when locals there see a white guy with a gopro. they 100% see that as normal. because they are used to the thought of white tourists often doing weird unusual things (i.e. walking in hot weather)... they would definitely be more worried if they see a local walking with a camera though 😬

I will slow down at some point but for now I think it’s nice to keep content fresh, the longer I’m in a place the harder it is for me to stay motivated making content. Haha I don’t actually go clubbing really, except for that video I was making, I just sit in my hotel on the laptop 😁 thankfully I have the freedom that my schedule doesn’t matter too much nowadays but I do miss getting outside in the morning around sunrise. Yea just one day in kota bharu and then on to the next town 😁

Here are the interesting info you wanted about Istana Jahar: From wiki: The Istana Jahar was a royal residence in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, Malaysia. It was built in 1855 by Sultan Muhammad II of Kelantan for his grandson Raja Bendahara Long Kundor. It was named after a jahar tree which was growing in the grounds at the time. Today, the palace houses the Museum of Royal Traditions and Customs of Kelantan. From Kilantan State Museum Corporation (source: waybackmachine from the Kelantan museum website, published in 2006): Brief: The Oblective of the Royal Kelantan Customs Museum was established to preserve and maintain the historic old building, Istana Jahar and features knowledge of the Royal Kelantan customs in ancient times. The Museum's collection, this showcases the equipment (artifek-artifect) [i think they mean artifact here] of the Royal customs of antiquity from birth to the realm of marriage. Apart from that, there are also collections of textiles, copper paraphernalia and personal jewelry. During the exhibition, traditional music is heard. The Royal Kelantan Customs Museum Exhibition Hall has two exhibition halls on the upper and lower floors. The Duty Officer of the Exhibition Hall is regulated by several uniformed museum guards headed by a Supervisor. The museum is open every day except Friday from 8.30 am to 4.45 pm. The fee is RM 1.00 for adults and RM 0.50 sen for children. For overseas visitors, the fee is RM 2.00 for adults and RM1 .00 for children. (again, that was the info back in 2006) More details on the Building History: The Royal Customs Museum Building (Istana Jahar) was originally a one-storey building known as the King's Palace of the Treasurer. The palace was first built using full timber during the late days of Sultan Muhammad's reign II (1837 - 1886). Its construction was completed in 1887, a year after the death of Sultan Muhammad II. The palace was built as a wedding gift to his grandson Long Kundur with Tengku Embong, daughter of Tengleu Puteh, Raja Pattani III. At that time Long Kundur was the King of the Treasurer. After the death of Sultan Muhammad II in 1886, he was succeeded by his son Long Sulong who wore the title Sultan Ahmad. During the reign of Sultan Ahmad, the building of Istana Jahar in! continues to be inhabited by his son Long Kundur. Sultan Ahmad did not rule Kelantan for long. In 1889, he died. After that, Long Kundur was officially crowned sultan to replace his father in 1889 wearing the title Sultan Muhammad III. He continued to live in the Jahar Palace and made it the center of government and government administration. He died in 1890 after just over a year on the throne. Long Mansur was later crowned as the sultan in place of Long Kundur, and Long Senik (your son of Long Kundur), was appointed as Tengku Indera Mahkota. Sultan Muhammad IV also ordered the Jahar tree to be planted in the courtyard of Istana Jahar (King Bendahara's Palace). Jahar trees grew a lot in Kelantan at that time. The tree blooms the size of a melon and yellow fat crab. The leaves are the size of a thumb and are shaped like an oval of four squares. The leaves are always used by Indians for curry on Fridays. The Malays use their flowers to make kerabu. The Siamese call this Jahar tree 'kelek' and they greatly glorify this tree. In 1915, Sultan Muhammad IV awarded the Istana Jahar to his son Tengku Ismail, who was then called Tengku Sri Indera Mahkota. The award was as a gift for Tengku Ismail's wedding to Tengku Nik Tengleu Kaya Pahlawan. Tengku Ismail continued to make the Istana Jahar as his place of residence. In 1920 Sultan Muhammad IV died and he was replaced by his son Tengku Ismail who wore the title Sultan Ismail. Sultan Ismail continued to make Istana Jahar as his official residence and Istana Balai Besar as the administrative center of the Kelantan Government. His Majesty was the last sultan to reside in the Jahar Palace. After his death in 1944, he was replaced by his predecessor Tengku Ibrahim. During the reign of Sultan lbrahim, the Istana Jahar was bestowed upon his son-in-law Raja Perempuan Zainab II (Tengku Zainab binti Tengku Muhammad Petra) wife of-Tengku Yahya Petra. At that time, Tengku Yahya Petra was named Tengku Bendahara. Tengku Yahya Petra resided at Istana Batu and Istana Jahar as his office. During the reign of Sultan Yahya Petra, he himself resided in the Istana Kota Lama and Istana Jahar was left unmanageable. According to Tan Sri Mubin Sheppard in his article entitled 'Kelantan Palaces Of The Past', he stated that the original building of Istana Jahar was demolished in 1965 after a long period of idle. In addition, the building site is proposed for the construction of a new building as it is today. In 1980 Tengku Ismail Petra was crowned Sultan of Kelantan after the death of his father Sultan Yahya Petra in 1979. This glorious coronation ceremony was held at Istana Balai Besar. During the reign of His Majesty Sultan Ismail Petra (1979 - present), he forgave the extension of Istana Jahar on loan to the State Government to be used as the Kelantan State Museum. In order to create a State Museum, many repair and renovation works had to be done. This building is old because for too long, [it was] left empty and unmanaged. The same is true of the area which requires land-scaping works in accordance with the creation of a State Museum which will be a tourist attraction from within and outside the country. After the repair and renovation works were completed, the Istana Jahar building was inaugurated as the State Museum by Raja Perempuan Zainab II on 30 March 1981 in conjunction with the AI-Sultan Kelantan Birthday celebration. The first exhibition was held entitled 'The Exhibition of Our King'.' Then in August 1990, the Kelantan State Museum moved to a new building, the old Kota Bharu Municipal Council. The Jahar Palace building has once again been renovated. The new museum is known as the Royal Kelantan Customs Museum. The opening ceremony was officiated by AI-Sultan Kelantan on 27 July, 1992. The museum is now on display of various types of Kelantan Royal Customs since time immemorial. Southern Thailand states/provinces used to be ruled by Malaysia Sultanates but the British administration when Malaysia was a British colony, decided to give away these states to Thailand while retaining the states of Perlis, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu. Hence, these Thai controlled states have similar culture and language/dialect Kelantan.

kelantan is the most conservative state in malaysia, they were under islamic law since independent. only in kelantan, the siamese, chinese and indian speak using local dialect and has the thickest local accent that hardly understand even for malay in other state,

Thai food in Kota Bahru is very good too. And a must have is nasi kerabu and ayam percik. The best! For breakfast go for Roti Titab. It’s stacked toast with half boiled eggs on top. Goes perfect with the local coffee and small packets of Nasi Lauk. Kelantan food is awesome!

Dark soya sauce - 2type (sweet and salty) Kicap manis (sweet) Light soya sauce only salty variety. Nasi dagang is mixed brown and white rice with dishes. Kelantan and Trengganu are predominantly Muslim states. After sunset there will be prayer (Maghrib). Most shops will close by then. After sunrise there are many shops and wet market will be opened. Muslims believe the morning are fill with blessings more so for traders and businesses.

Ben, if you have the time, you can travel by bus. To go from Kuala Lumpur to Kelantan is only about RM25 on way and takes just a few hours. The seats are luxury rated. The bus station in KL is BTS and is easy to get to from KL Sentral on the ERL. Going from state to state in Malaysia is very reasonable by bus.

Actually about 50% of Kelantan-born people are living in other states of Malaysia. Mainly in Selangor and KL😊

The most conservative states in Malaysia with a conservative party govern the states but you will survived..😂..yeah they spoke little english but its not a big deal you can managed..go there and try their food..they have the most original and tastiest food..the states are welcoming but not featuring enough because of Malaysian has this pride of their own states ..by the way there is also a Chinatown if you wanna try some chinese food there.

I was in Kota Bharu in 1999. There were quite a few foreigners there on their way to the Perhentian Islands. I returned in 2004 and was shocked at how developed it had become.

Kelantan is one of the poorest states in Malaysia in terms of investment and infrastructure... but their people are not poor because they have businesses and can afford big cars and live in bungalows.

The last three months we havn't had any rain, its only rained twice, there has been a lot of burning in the jungle because its been so hot, also all the locals burn their rubbish, plastic etc which isn't good which was awful a few weeks ago, we couldn't breath the air was a fog, i thought it was the volcano in indonisa blowing over, since we have had rain the air quality is ok now !!
