Amazing idea, I'm changing my line on that 5th move in the Budapest. Let's call that variation the Graif variation.

Excellent suggestion -it needs to be recognized as the ‘Graif Attack’ in the Budapest Defense. Everyone needs to use the name, and it’ll get adopted in the references.
@j.thomas1420 Жыл бұрын
@@StephenWhite55 Totally. I got the opportunity to place that variation on a classical game during a tournament this year, with a quick win. There was that famous Nxf3 sacrifice, and resignation in the middlegame after huge material lose to avoid checkmate. There is still some natural lines that need depth prep because the ...f6 move is really dubious if the opponent choose some paths, but really fun to play.

Thank you SO MUCH for this. I play Nf6 on move one versus d4 to enter the anti-London lines if they go 2. Bf4 but they often enter some kinda qg or nimzo type structure instead (boring). This pretty much permanently solves that problem for me!
@rohungupta84352 жыл бұрын
what's the anti-london you are talking about?

@@rohungupta8435 1. d4 Nf6 2. Bf4 c6 3. Nf3 Qb6 [after which you're hitting the b2 pawn and can play Nh5 to target white's London bishop if they play b3 to defend it]

@@rohungupta8435 Doesn't have to be that exact line but the thought is that whenever white's knight is on f3 (obstructing the white queen) you can play your queen out to b6 and follow it up with Nh5 to grab white's London bishop

Also if they drop their bishop back to defend the b pawn instead of pushing b3, they're essentially down 2 tempi. Likewise if they play b3 and then drop the bishop back (to fianchetto on b2) after Nh5.

Bro-this is a fresh look at the Budapest- which I play. Only problem is Lower rated ( under 2000) don’t play C4) Everyone is playing London or Jobava. Great ideas! Have you looked at the Budapest sister variations With Ne4? It’s already a trap filled line- Hmm :) Thank you again
@GambitMan2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much!!! According to the lichess database ( lichess.org/analysis ), c4 still easily accounts for the plurality of 2nd move choices (more than double the second most popular move) at every level. But ya maybe I will try to work on something against Bf4/Nf3/Nc3 on the second move to complete our gambit repertoire! I have checked out the fajarowicz gambit actually, even before Schrantz's video -- I think it is fun and has some good ideas, but it doesn't actually hold up as theory or a recommendation to play it. The truth about Ne4 is that if white just plays the most natural/common/obvious moves with Nf3-e3-Be2-castles, then white is simply slightly better and black really has no more fun left in the position. Here with f6, however, it passes The Lichess Challenge test ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/nH6mo2eaodWmgrc ) seeing as the most common moves for white lose! Lots more excitement and sacrifices that you can actually get, and white needs to be much more careful. That's why I made this innovation instead of a video on a different line. Those are my thoughts :)
@chrisdubay74782 жыл бұрын
@@GambitMan That would be wonderful-The way I handle it now is to transpose into a Black Lion setup which I am familiar with. And yeah, if no one else has claimed these lines, by all means make the Graif Gambit- I luv it.

I did have another thought in the Budapest mainline after knight to G4 followed by knight to F3 you normally play Bishop to C5 to provoke D3 and lock in the bishop I don’t know if you took note of that and play this move order in this way or just weren’t completely familiar with the theory what do you suggest?

Ya for sure, it's a respectable line: 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e5 3. dxe5 Ng4 4. Nf3 Bc5 5. e3 Nc6 Black will get back their pawn, but if white here just plays the most obvious/common moves such as Nc3, Be2, castles, then they have a slight advantage. Difficult for black to have much fun here, but let me know your thoughts. The goal with my lines are to be new (both for the novelty value and for the surprise value over the board), tricky/trappy, fun, and of course actually good! I think this f6 stuff is certainly more exciting :)

@@GambitMan Hello there, new discovery about that opening, I found a way to play it in a NOT dubious engine way, and with the White. You start with 1.Nf3 your favorite Zukertort, and against the second most popular move 1. ...d5 you reply 2. a4. Yeah, the Potato opening. Most likely you get some 2. ...c5, and you can play a reverse Budapest, with the a pawn push include. When you reach the famous "f3" (...f6) move, it's not just great, it's the top engine recommandation. Then the fun start. Some new lines appears, I can't detail everything here, but it's totally worth the preparation since it's so easy to lure Black into that territory.

I usually attempt to play the Fajarowicz against D4+C4, but I rarely enter the gambit lines I've prepped. Watched your Busch-Gass deniers vid, would love more content focused on the declined lines. I tend to fall apart when my gambits get declined 😅
@4xelchess9052 жыл бұрын
I'm always amazed how many information these KZbinrs (William, Johnathan, Mio, ...) while still being digest, but under one hour, they can only scratch so much. What I do (and strongly advise you do) is I do my own study recounting the lines discussed in the video, trying to go from memory to already start memorizing. Then try to go figure what you would do against moves that aren't covered and think have a decent chance happening, or which seem challenging, using intuition and database to know which moves are likely or tricky. Then confirm with engine. More often than not, declining a gambit gives the decliner a slightly worse position but avoids complication (that's the whole point of declining) and simply following the top engine recommandation and unfodling the line to try to understand its plan is enough. But sometimes, some move score incredibly well in the database, indicating more tricky ideas to go for. For example for the Budapest Gambit, White does not have many ways to decline it since their d4 pawn is attacked and they don't want to recapture it with their Queen. The most common is d5, but that leaves a hole in c5 for you to put a Bishop, with tactics on f2 if White goes for the stereotypical Bg5. Nf3 the things that immediatlely comes to mind is e4, and checking with engine, it is indeed the plan, followed with c6 and d5 with a huge space advantage. Finally e3, the idea is to take once on d4 and later play d5, to give White an isolated Queen pawn. The bottom line is that you still have to know how to play "calm position", Black especially can't force the game to be messy in every position, but refucing gambits often have at least small downsides.
