The reason for One Punch Man having a more simple art style at times is that the manga is redrawn by an actual manga artist while the original story is by the author ONE, who started it as a webcomic and let's say his artistic capabilities were limited at best. So it's kind of a tribute to the original author's style. It's also generally used for more comedic moments and stuff. ONE has another manga called Mob Psycho 100 which is fantastic (+ the anime is finished and it's incredible), you should read/watch it. Edit: Mob has that same artstyle which puts a lot of people off but the anime manages to use it to great effect with extremely expressive animations.

1:26:10 About the author commentary sections, these are actually super common in manga, especially in shoujo! When the chapters are serialized in the monthly magazines, those spaces are used for advertisements. The author fills out those spaces with written notes or doodles in the published volumes. If you find them distracting, I recommend just skipping them until the chapter is over, or until you finish the volume.

Great reaction, I’m glad you enjoyed them. I think if you want to read a BL/Gay romance manga I recommend the one named “Given” or “Sasaki and Miyano”. And with Banana Fish it does get a little more into the romance but Banana Fish is more about Action and the main character so happens to have a gay relationship instead of being a straight relationship. I do appreciate that they made the main character have a same sex romantic relationship without the story having to be romance. I appreciate that it shows that having a Gay/Bi main character doesn’t mean the story has to be mainly romance, and I don’t see that too often.

I actually haven't read most of these myself, but Bleach is super nostalgic for me and I'm pleasantly surprised it landed so high on the list! It's really cool to see how Kubo's art evolves as the series goes on. It was also super fun to see you going into Sailor Moon completely blind! It was such an integral part of my childhood that it's interesting to see the reaction of someone who doesn't know all the characters and plot points yet. It's been a while since I've read it, but one shorter series I always thought had a cool premise was Chrono Crusade, a story about a nun who makes a pact with a demon that shortens her lifespan in order to fight other demons and save her brother.

One Punch man does a good job staying interesting IMO. The story generally does character development and social dynamics well and the interest in the fight scenes usually comes from rooting for the villains to get some good hits in rather than worrying if Saitama will win.

I've read most these and enjoyed a lot. I will say, if I was going to advocate for one of the lower ranking ones its My Hero. The growth of each character is good and it does get quite heavy. It feels less of a high school series after their school tournament. Which is done very well. I haven't been caught up for a bit, my own shonen burn out, but whenever I see glimpse of whats going on all i think "hehe...wtf". Other than that Blue Exorcist and Black Clover have some good qualities, but idk about Black Clover but that rushed feeling of Blue Exocsist doesn't really change. I sorta just read that for the characters whomst I love. Love seeing you find your faves.

You might have already gotten this suggestion, but Blue Flag is a really good queer high school romance. It plays with a lot of genre tropes and shows young people grappling with sexuality in a way that feels true to life. It shows how figuring out your feelings can be really messy (especially as a teenager), and is the rare series that doesn't grossly sexualize anybody. It's also only 8 volumes!

I loved this, it was so much fun to watch and as a manga reader, so useful! Getting thirty series-starters reviews is a big treat and you did a great job of sharing the mood, style and energy of each series without spoiling any surprises. I was making notes as you went along, this added a few series to my TBR! Your reaction to Promised Neverland was *delightful.* So happy for you that you got to go into the series blind! Also really enjoyed your reaction to Sailor Moon, I grew up with the dubbed anime long before reading the manga so it's a lot of fun to see your take on it. I was excited to see Frieren on this list. There are a lot of series which kick off with a death but normally we're plunged into a plot to distract from the uncomfortable reality of loss, while Frieren is driven by the deep emotional changes that come from grief. I found the series last year shortly after losing someone important and watching Frieren process her grief and restructure her life while still honoring the life and loss of someone she held dear was therapeutic and made me feel less alone. Even her Elvish perspective was relatable because there are some losses that change life so deeply, the new reality feels impossible to understand and for awhile the next step is just ???. Seeing the ??? on Frieren's face too was a relief and following her as she carried her friend's memory but also began a new adventure was very meaningful. The sports/basketball manga I'd rec trying is Kuroko's Basketball. It's a completed thirty volume series, character-driven and has an endearing MC. No spoilers but the character arcs were very satisfying.

I love this video concept! In your review of Assassination Classroom you said something about the repetitiveness, so remember that this is published serially---so like how each Animorphs book starts with a brief summary, because it could never be quaranteed a kid would pick up the books in order, I've seen a good number of manga do a brief recap at the beginning of chapters. I'm only about 6 books into Ass Class but it IS super wholesome and reliably funny! I enjoyed the first volume of Bleach the same as you, the monster designs are so cool. I recommend for someone who likes that kind of hero vs the supernatural series to try Black Torch: it's only 5 volumes instead of a zillion, and it has fun fights and a really cool scratchy art style. I agree about Undead Unluck starting with some uncomfy vibes, and tbh even the humor is too crude for me...but as I kept reading I became weirdly sucked into the worldbuilding and intrigued to see what happens next. Definitely worth reading at least 3-4 volumes to give it a proper try imo. If I am to recommend any manga to you, if you have not read them yet, it would be the scifi/mystery mini series (just 5 volumes) Astra Lost in Space, and the incredibly heartwarming ongoing fantasy series Magus of the Library :)

So, one thing you brought up about Demon Slayer is how quickly the beginning chapters gloss over some things. With Shonen Jump, the magazine Demon Slayer, JJK, One Piece, and more are published, the magazine editors can get ruthless with cutting and replacing manga with new ones. As a result, a lot of the time, the first 20-ish chapters go a mile a minute as most manga end in that 20 chapter area. Even One Piece has a super fast beginning compared to even Alabasta. There were what, 3 arcs in 20 chapters? Unheard of now.

Don't see people in the comments talking about Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (which I always knew as Frieren at the funeral but i guess the official translation uses a different title). This manga is amazing and nothing like most of the other things on the list, I am pretty sure most of the other manga are either shonen and quite action heavy, or romance. Really interesting to see a ranking based on only the first volume. Many are misplaced based on my opinion of the entire series, but in this format only first impressions matter so it's hard to disagree. My personal recommendations to pick up would be: Battle Angel Alita: My personal favorite along with One Piece, and you might have seen the live action holywood movie already. Kingdom: A surprisingly exciting manga following a warring period in China, sitting safely in my top 10. Yotsubato!: A super cute casual manga following a father and daughter moving into a new home, this one seriously cures depression and can be saved for a rainy day. Tower of God: A manhwa (korean version of manga, usually colored) I guess, but still very much worth considering. It has a very unique setting and some great (and horrible) characters. Most of my others in the top 10 are in the video or others you're currently reading.

Two shinigamis appear and they reveal to her that she only has one year left to live, so she sets out to fulfill her dream before she passes. I'm not 100% sure on the manga since I only watched the anime (the music is so good!), but I hear it's on par if not better (and darker) than the anime so I'd say go for it!

If you found One Punch Man funny, I think you'll like the rest of it. It absolutely has staying power, one of the bigger story engines is that no one realizes how strong Saitama is. Like obviously Genos knows, and over time a few others figure it out. But by and large no one realizes it, he doesn't have a big ego so he isn't bragging about it, the obliterated monsters get attributed to other heroes, and even when people see his feats, they're in denial because they don't think anyone could be that strong. The story also spreads out to other point of view characters, you get Genos, the blizzard group, and the S-class heroes who all have their own plotlines that have actual stakes when Saitama isn't around. The art style change was 100% on purpose. It's kind of similar to the gag that Fullmetal Alchemist did where the characters look like undetailed blobs in comedic moments. But there's also more context to it. OPM was initially published it as a webcomic. ONE, the author, sucks at drawing so the webcomic is kinda ugly (google image search "OPM webcomic" and you'll see). But because of the story and humor it became incredibly popular in Japan despite the art style, so he teamed up with Yusuke Murata to remake OPM as a manga. Murata is a bunch better artist so for the most part the manga looks really good and detailed, but occasionally it will get that simpler ugly style for a panel or two as a gag and also a call back to the webcomic. It also goes the other way sometimes where Saitama actually gets serious and he becomes incredibly detailed, which is really fun to see because you know someone is about to get their ass handed to them. For Chainsaw man, I would love to see you read part 1 (which is the first 11 volumes ). It's a very weird manga, you can never tell where it's going, but it's very well written. Denji is one of the few "pervy" anime characters I actually like because it isn't just a "ha ha sexual assault is funny" gag. The story treats it as it should (most people react with "ew, that's gross"), and it ties into who Denji is as a character and plays a role in his character development (minor spoilers: his goal's change as the manga goes on and he grows).

I'm so glad you enjoyed "Sailor Moon"! A suggestion regarding the anime-- I'd suggest starting with "Crystal" instead of with the original 90s version which has some questionable content/situations. (It's def of its time.) Also, I think you might love Sailor Uranus as a character. (I do!)

So happy that you read Fruits Basket, Yona of the Dawn, and Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon!!! Fruits Basket and Sailor Moon were the first manga that I read as a teen, so it’s exciting for me to see your reaction. I just started reading Yona at the beginning of the year. After watching your manga videos I was inspired to pick up manga for the first time in ten years. I love having something different to read (quick, but also something that feels just as immersive as a novel). It’s definitely boosted my goodreads number, I’d originally set my goal at 20, and have definitely surpassed it. Another recommendation I see paired with Yona is Snow White with the Red Hair, I watched the first season of the anime a few years ago and remember the story being pretty good (I’m sure others would love to see some more shoujo on your list).

Seinen is the name of manga that is for older male teens+ so Beserk is a seinen manga 😊 Also please try Dorohedoro. It’s 23 volumes and it is by a female mangaka but it’s seinen and there is violence. It’s fun and funny but also dark although not quite as dark as Beserk. The set style is also very unique and I would love for you to try it some day

I feel like Hero Academia suffers from a similar thing that puts a lot of people off of One Piece early on. Like his hero Oda, Horikoshi initially presents a pretty simple and by-the-books story, hoping to lure people in with a fun journey. But similarly it slowly peels back to reveal a more complicated world of grey morality, sometimes brutal and visceral action, societal corruption, very creative powers and character designs, and a world that eventually is forced to come to grips with a shattered version of their idealized world created by cracks that had been clearly there but largely ignored beforehand. There are also themes about how terrible parents can break a person or how other people can become great despite that, how people who've hurt others don't deserve forgiveness just because they got better, and the tragedy of inherited burdens and expectations. Also it looks nice.

If you enjoyed Soma, the Mangaka actually has a small spin-off series for One Piece called Shokugeki no Sanji! They're just small side stories showing Sanji cooking for people, but they're very entertaining and have all the flair of Soma and more. FYI: Chapter 5 does have spoilers for where you are in One Piece, but everything else is safe to read.

some tips for pronunciation of japanese names/words: -as a rule of thumb, vowels in japanese words always make the same sounds and never deviate. A is always "ah" I is always "ee" U is always "oo" E is always "eh" and O is always "oh" --the one exception to this rule is that vowels are silent when they are preceded by and unvoiced consonant i.e.,“f,” “h,” “t,” “ts,” “k,” “p,” "s" and “sh”. for example: in one piece there's a character named momonosuke and you've probably been told to skip the u in his name and this is the reason. another example is in the present-tense form of "to understand": wakarimashita. in this example the word written phonetically would be pronounced wah kah ree mah shtah. the I in the word is skipped because it follows the unvoiced consonant SH. -the next tip is probably the hardest habit to unlearn as an english speaker and it regards the stress put on syllables. english is a stress based language so it's natural for english speakers to stress some syllables more than others but japanese is a pitch accented language so most of the syllabes are spoken with similar levels of stress. generally i wouldn't worry too much about this one unless you're super interested in really improving your pronunciation. -finally, knowing when to apply japanese pronunciation rules rather than western rules. while there's no 100% way to know, aside from hearing the author themselves pronounce the names or looking at the romanizations, one easy thing to look out for is abnormal syllable structure. japanese is a syllable based language so all of the words will follow the same structure of one consonant sound followed by one vowel sound per syllable (with the exception of the letter n which i'm pretty sure could have it's own essay written about it's various nuances but i'll not get into it). obviously there's some nuance i'm leaving out but hopefully this helps you or anyone else be a little less stressed about their pronunciation

I strongly disagree with the people saying that the anime saved demon slayer, and that the manga is bad etc. It’s something a lot of people say - that the animation is the only reason demon slayer blew up. But there’s something so charming about the manga that the anime doesn’t fully capture. I love the mangaka’s art so much (it’s very cute in a way) and the characters are so so loveable. I will agree that the story is quite simple compared to other mangas, but sometimes you don’t have to reinvent the wheel. The manga in my opinion truly carries itself, it’s so fun, emotional, charming, heart wrenching etc. But I know it must be so confusing for you when so many people are telling you different things 😂 either way (whether it be the anime or manga) I hope you continue demon slayer! I also just wanted to add that I love your videos and seeing a new video from you always makes me feel so much better ❤

Gavin, if you want something spooky, watch Mushishi I believe you will love Vinland Saga, its one of the most acclaimed mangas out there I havent read or watched Slam Dunk, but the mangaka also wrote Vagabond, so that is extremely promising If you want to read something set in modern world- Try Oyasumi Punpun and Yotsuba For most manga, specially earlier ones, the first arcs are mainly about setting and getting the crew together. They usually turn out to be most boring

oh my gossshhh gavin!! i'm so happy you liked dr stone so much and how you ranked it so high! i read more than half of the manga in this video and dr stone is my second most favorite manga of all time. first is one piece :) and i think if you love one piece, there's a big chance you'll like the rest of dr stone too. dr stone is also a lot of fun and provides lots and lots of laughs, it doesn't take itself too seriously at times, but when it get serious and emotional it's REALLY REALLY serious and emotional. this manga made me sob like a baby at least two times. i absolutely adore the characters of dr stone too and their dynamics with each other. the way they rely on each other and complete each other reminds me so much of the straw hats. i have to admit that somewhere in the beginning part of the story, it might get a bit slow for a few chapters, but do push through it. because after that comes absolute greatness that kept blowing my mind :)

Now I'm really curious of how you'd like Mob Psycho. It's my second-favorite series after One Piece and unlike One Punch Man, has NOT been redrawn by one of the most artistically talented mangaka of our time. Because of that it has a very earnest feel to its art, which perfectly complements the story, which is extremely character-driven. The full manga hasn't been released yet, though the anime has finished it, and it is a triumph of animation in this medium. In my personal opinion, it's the perfected version of One Punch Man, a story where fighting becomes a non-issue so the characters just have to deal with their more personal concerns, and its very sweet and uplifting and real when it deals with those things

Oh man, so many great series in this video! Might edit this as I go but I just wanted to say that Demon Slayer anime is a lot better than the manga, at least in my opinion (and one that I've seen floating around the internet). I watched the anime first and I loved it so much I went to check out the manga and I was comparatively left pretty disappointed. It's not like there's much change to the story itself but the adaptation is just so stellar that I feel like the written form kinda pales in comparison, so this is definitely a case of the show being better than the book. Edit 1: The amount of relief I felt when you liked Haikyuu!, it's one of my faves for sure. Also, Assassination Classroom (or Ass Class as people have dubbed it) definitely keeps itself fresh with adding new characters and plotlines, and it grows better the more you get to know the characters, and for a cast that big, you genuinely get to know all of them pretty well. It has a lot of found family vibes for sure. I was determined not to like it in the beginning because I hated Koro-sensei, but I ended up getting incredibly emotionally invested and crying by the end of it so...
