@@GavinReadsItAll I grew up with his later books, I prefer the older ones a bit more, maybe the same amount. Think it just depends on when you grew up, as if the originals are as good, if not better, for me, I would assume nostalgia would affect the score positively for 90s and 80s kids.

I really, really liked Who's Your Mummy just because the core concept of being slowly eaten alive for 100s of years while you beg for death is just so very dark and twisted. I also did not read any of the books you suggested it 'ripped' off. So I actually think it was one of his best ones.

I think the timeline thing is meant to be like how characters never age in cartoons, I don't think it's necessarily an oversight, and more something that was intentionally ignored.

My take on the timeline is that when the books were rereleased, they were retconned to take place in the late 00’s and therefore fit into the rest of the horror land series. Great video as always!

Yo ! Love the video. The timeline regarding goosebumps is weird, when the books are reprinted they have little edits made to them that make them more current .this was the case around the time that the horrorland series released . It's usually small things like technology being changed . Hope that clears things up regarding stuff like Carly Beth. Still weird but somewhat purposeful.

I can relate so hard to that pause for the cats playing with their squeaky toy at 37:05… my cats have a mouse toy at the end of a string on a stick that makes that exact same noise. Sometimes my kitten will carry the stick in his mouth and parade around my whole apartment with it, dragging the squeaking mouse toy along behind him. The amount of noise it makes going up and down the stairs is ridiculous!

It’s been 6 months or so already? Well okay then. Here we go. HorrorLand itself I frankly rather like, but I do have nostalgia for it. I think it’s the last series thus far I can say that for overall and that;’s because I appreciate the ambitious and it has a few high highs. Ambitious is not a word you usually use to sum these up so I appreciate Scholastic/Stine tried something big here with the arc. Stine has gone on record saying he doesn’t like doing arcs and it does show a bit here with a bunch of issues. But both arcs build to a great ending I think. The Menace is one of the strongest villains and it has a lot of awesome dark stuff and big dangers, if it’s overall bit clunky and rushed. Chiller House gives us a deeper villain than usual and the story with him is told pretty well. The stories themselves are a bout on par, I find it better than the other series in some ways due to having less lows and them being not as low, there’s nothing I hate here, and only one or two I have a dislike to to some extent. Not a lot that is great but enough stand out. Scream is a good Haunted Mask sequel, making up for being a bit of a filed experiment, Strange Powers has a wild villain, Creep from the Deep has fun gore and such (not as good as Deep Trouble 1 but better than 2), and Say Cheese and Die Screaming has one of the smartest Goosekids ever lol and is easily the best of those I think. Also Who’s your mummy is a fresh mummy store with wild dark stuff. My least favorite is Revenge of the living dummy as it’s just so forced and annoying. Dr. Maniac isn’t that good but I have a soft spot for how weird and dumb it is, plus it can be weirdly clever at times. It’s a bit overhated. There’s a sequel in Most Wanted that is worse. Arc 2 is more eh, most are just in the middle, even the best are simply kinda good, except for the finale of course. Little Shop of Hamsters was weirdly dull but got fun near the end and it’s a big step up from MB 2. For misc stuff, Monster Blood for Breakfast is the first one in that series to actually be decent which isn’t saying much but hey, at least the protag was good this time. I feel like you were off base there but again, it’s not hard to be better than the first four. I appreciate a lot of the effort that went into some of these and the overall concept, for most of it. I at least respect the effort and I usually admire effort when I see. There’s some low effort stuff here but not an awful extent so the series is mixed for me overall a mild win. Hall of Horrors exists, it’s just okay. Weakest is Zombie School for being a non-story with some decent gore, best is Claws for a nice ending even if it’s a bit wonky at times. Just an okay, halfway series for me. I do feel like you’re maybe a bit hard on the rehashing, I see nothing wrong with re-using ideas if you at least try to improve it or work on its own. Hamsters for example improves on MB 2 enough to be okay, but it’s still not that good, and a few maybe you nitpicked what was rehashed, idk. I like how some remix ideas, but a few can feel just like a rehash. Your rating system was a bit confusing this time to be honest, it seems like you said “It was okay” for some and then gave it a 3 anyway and it’s out of 10. Like, you said Creep from the Deep was a standout but didn’t give it higher than a 5 and made a deal out of none reach above a 5. The timeline rant is a bit odd, it’s clearly on a floating timeline much like comic books or The Simpsons, so that I can buy but it is odd with arc 2’s progression. Otherwise I can appreciate the opinions here somewhat. I think that ends my essay for this time lol, guess we’ll be back for Most Wanted in 6 months but spoilers, not a big fan of these so we may not clash too much there.I wouldn’t get too hyped given you’ve been done on the series people like thus far lol .See ya then.
@GavinReadsItAll2 жыл бұрын
I gave Creep From the Deep 7/10, not 5. And I wouldn’t mind rehashing stories if RL Stine didn’t make 90% of his books a rehashing. Every book I read I felt deja vu from lots of other Goosebumps stories, and bare in mind, I’ve read over 100 from the beginning this past year so I’m seeing them with quite fresh eyes. It looks lazy, repetitive, and the originality is few and far between. And I really do find the timeline irksome. Floating timeline doesn’t make sense when the OG stories are clearly set in the early 90s, and these books are clearly set in the late 2000s. It doesn’t make sense plain and simple and I don’t like it. I’m sure lots of people overlook it and don’t care, but I do, and I just find it sloppy and bad storytelling. But to each their own. I’m sure I’ll like Most Wanted better.
@SpongeyTheEditor2 жыл бұрын
@@GavinReadsItAll Ah, you said you didn't rate one higher than 5 so I got mixed up. ' As for the rest, the timeline thing isn't that big of a deal as again, the floating timeline thing is common for series that go on long enough There isn't anything lazy or wrong with the approach as it stands inherently, it's really the only way to go without aging them up or something and the stories these are sequels too don't even have as many 90's signs as others. They've been reprinted with some of the old references removed anyway. Doing things a bit differently isn't bad storytelling on its own, it's just weird and picky to be salty about. While I didn't these all super fast in a row, I have read them all and do pick up on reused things, it's just not a big deal unless it super blatant or the story itself is just all the same, or it's a bad and not improved version of it. I get it's hard to not repeat yourself after so long. Most Wanted isn't much better, especially in the rehash regard although there are some good ideas in there.

Maybe you reading 5 books a day made things a bit more frustrated for you. I agree some books were actually slow and lazy written, but I was able to enjoy the whole series as I read 1 book for 2-4 days and then took 1-2 days break or even read other non R.L Stine books for some days. Therefore, I really enjoyed the whole experience and even had mild nightmares / felt scared out just being in my room at night. And the wait to slowly unravel the HorrorLand secrets and truth kept me on hook. So basically it's the dopamine saturation reading same patterns with slight variations if you binge read them day after day. I'm pretty sure my ratings for each book will be more compared to yours. Anyways I'm just a beginner in reading and have not read so many books as you - great to so a huge library at your home. Thanks for doing a full review, loved it ! Cheers !

the horrorland series pretends the sequels to classic goosebumps books do not exist, and that the original books took place in modern day. I'm pretty sure the new printings of older books change to reflect this too, with things like Gameboys changed to DS

Also during the release of these books the characters of the original horrorland book apparently ran a blog investigating the park, idk I wasn't there but that additional material is worth acknowledging

Ahh then I hate that they’ve modernised the OG Goosebumps books, they’re untouchable 😂 and it doesn’t seem like good practice either since so many fans of Goosebumps have their original books and the reprintings aren’t available to everyone. Just seems like such a silly idea to retcon the OG timelines and sequels. Hate that 😂
@bombseel2 жыл бұрын
@@GavinReadsItAll maybe I'm biased because I'm in the age group the reprints are for (I was 11 with DS in 2009, and that's when the reprints happened that changed things like that) but I never cared about the reprints. They don't change major parts of the story, and while the time a story comes out provides context, this isn't high art. It's goosebumps. And these reprints were after like a decade of no goosebumps to go with a new line of books. It might seem crazy because of how big the books have always been, but their genuinely were kids new to the franchise in 2009

I think it was on accident, but R.L. Stine isn't incorrect in that mummies still have some organs in them. The Egyptians only removed about 4 organs from the bodies being mummified as they didn't seem to be aware of the rest, as would make sense if you think about their methodology. Think, there are only 4 canopic jars per mummy. However I seriously doubt they'd be in any way edible, even to a supernatural creature, as the bodies are dried out for like 40 days after removing the 4 organs for the jars.
@cassiebooks90742 жыл бұрын
So I'm watching this a month late but you are correct the only they left in mummies was the heart. The liver, stomach, lungs, and intestines were put in special canopic jars. So maybe he was eating the organs out of the jars (cuz the jars are placed in the tomb with the mummy itself). Funnily enough, normally media gets mummification wrong by saying the heart is removed and there are 5 canopic jars (which isn't true there's 4), so interesting to see goosebumps got it wrong in a different way. As always this is an amazing vlog and they always make my day. Sorry for the long winded comment lol
