Dave Wyman The Rx100 VI doesn't have a handicapped aperture. It's as large an f/stop as it can be with a 200mm lens on it while keep the same basic overall size. If the maximum f/stop was larger, the lens would be larger. I think a great combo would be a Sony HX90v and the RX100 VI. Even better: one camera or the other, or both, teamed with an iPhone with portrait mode.

24-200mm is an amazing reach for a camera that can fit in your shirt pocket. F2.8 on the wide end is not a giant step backwards from F1.8. When you consider the trade off for the extra reach of 200mm you will be happy knowing that you can get a candid shot from afar whilst being discreet about it.

The amazing new feature isn't the lens, it's the autofocus. They're packing eye auto focus into this tiny package. That's worth celebrating, as is the touch to focus screen. As far as the speed of the lens-- You're still at f/4 at 70mm, not too bad, and you're at f/3.5 between 25-50mm. You now have image stabilization on the lens to help with that low light performance. The ND filter is gone on the VI. That's a huge omission. You can still use a recordable external mic issue with the Shure VP83F to solve the mic issue.

If we could slap a really thin variable ND on the front of the VI's lens, then I think we'd be in business. Also, I love my VI. For day to day vlogging, I couldn't care less that my shutter has to go up or that I lose the shallow DOF. If you want to shoot cinematically with this thing, you absolutely can, and it still looks great in low light.

Do you still shoot with your a6500? I have been debating going FF since 2009 but none of the FF models gets me really excited. Size and weight are a huge factor for me. If it’s too big, I just won’t carry it and i haven’t been fully convinced that going FF would give me enough improvement in my results to justify the weight. I’ve been shooting a6000 since it came out. I’m a mom who chases little kids and I rely on the fast eye tracking and 11fps. I do have a nice little collection of APSC Sony Zeiss lenses that are a great balance of size/sharpness. Is now finally the time to go full frame or should I move to the a6500? Love your channel!

I'm happy to say that I don't regret getting an RX100 V recently and will not be upgrading to the Mark VI the autofocus on the Mark V is already amazing and the F/1.8 lens is an advantage over the VI. I don't think the added focal length is worth the added price because if I want that distance I would probably use a different camera. The RX100 V is an amazing camera and I'm very happy with it and will be for a few more years it seems :)

I have the RX100 M3, currently best value of the series I think. Glad they finally added the touchscreen, but they gave up so much useful features. Extra range is nice, but not at the cost of the fast aperture. They removed app support, they removed the ND filter. They did not add a microphone jack. Heard somewhere they are targeting vloggers, but I don't see how with these specs. Definitely not upgrading and if the next one in the series is similar to the M6, I won't look back to the RX100 series.

With no ND, same battery range, more weight, no mic jack and a much more narrowed aperture I do no see the need of parting ways with my mark 5. If they would’ve added a mic jack and cold shoe mount I could have overlooked the narrow aperture and no ND filter but as, is the mark V is a better camera for what it is in my book. Also at 1200 bucks is not too far from an A7iii at 1900 ish.

yeah it sucks there's no mic jack, but then again what compact point and shoot camera does have a mic jack? Pretty much none so you shouldn't be expecting it. The closest thing would be a mirrorless camera that may have one, but mirrorless cameras are generally bulky or they have a removable lens which would make them not a point and shoot camera.

The difference between the previous price-point of $999 and the new one ($1,199) is $200, not $300. I too was surprised that Sony didn’t follow the previous pattern of introducing the new model at $999 and pushing the older ones down, but $1,199 seems reasonable for the added functionality.

I might sell my rx100m3 and upgrade to maybe rx100m5. I’ll use the money I make selling it towards buying an m5 on eBay. 24-200 is nice though for traveling but $1200 is too expensive. When I was traveling 24-70 was too limiting and wished for that extra zoom range. 24-200 would have been perfect. I think Sony could have done 24-105, why didn’t they. 24-105 is like a sweet spot without compromising too much of the aperture, idk.

Yeah definitely the point of the RX100 series is you have a bunch of choices depending on budget and features you want so those who want the reach can now go the VI, those who want a faster lens can go one of the others. Each model doesn't obsolete the previous model.

Well that loss in the Aperture can make a big difference for the HFR mode. And I’m seeing some differences in the sharpness with the mark 5 being the better in the overall screen. So I was going to go buy it today, but I’m on the edge and not sure now. The Mark VI does run cooler so the new processor is using a smaller nanometer on the chip silicon, that can be a plus. I’m so back and forth, errr. Price difference is the Lens, processor and the extra DDR memory for more cache at frame burst and touch screen. But the touch screen can be turned off. Newer menu (finally) and custom programmable buttons. But are these worth the extra $300 and slight loss of quality in the sharpness with the zoom lens? Yea, it could probably be corrected post but I expected better. As for a mic, with the new processor I don’t know why they can pipe the audio input into the micro USB, use a splitter so you can charge and use external audio as well. Seems like maybe (hopefully) this can be a firmware update if the designed it correctly inside with the hardware? Or why didn’t they out the mic jack on that accessory handle they are selling. Then everyone would buy that accessory. Does that accessory work with the mark V?

Two RX100's are still smaller and lighter than an A6500 with two lenses that give you the same low-light ability and the same reach. And, with the RX100's you get workable power zooms.
@tpar83
@tpar83 6 жыл бұрын
Hmmm. Sorry, but no. There is absolutely no way a RX100 (even the M5) could rival an a6500 with a f1.4 prime (or even an f1.8 for the sake of comparison) in low light situations, if that is what you meant by your comment.
@markr041
@markr041 6 жыл бұрын
You are correct, the low-light ability of the A6500 with an f1.4 or f1.8 prime lens would be better (duh). But compare the size and weight of the A6500 with two lenses - a fast prime (one focal length of course) and the Sony telephoto with reach from 18mm to 135mm (which would get you 28mm -200mm equivalent, so you lose a lot of wide angle relative to the RX100 VI) to two RX100's, one in each pocket. That's a lot of weight and bulk to get that improved low-light. And if one is happy with the RX100 V low-light, then what's the gain?

They should do an adapter for a microphone through the USB like goPros do. Also, it supports bluetooth now, but I’m guessing it doesn’t support bluetooth headphones and microphones, which smartphones do. I don’t see S&Q on the mode dial and I guess the apps are gone too, so no decent way to an in-camera timelapse (that doesn’t take up lots of space) - and again smartphone have timelapse apps. I’m guessing it also doesn’t do vertical format video properly or livestreaming. To me these cameras are competing for attention with smartphones, so it’s frustrating when they are not as good in some areas.

It seems that Sony dropped the PlayMemories Camera Apps for the Mark VI as well, just like with the third generation of the Alpha 7's. For me, that's another downside and a loss of a quite unique and useful feature. So I'll look for a used Mark III or IV instead, they are still really capable cameras today.

But: go to a camera store and try it out before! If it feels like the AF is remarkable faster, maybe you should upgrade. If it doesn't feel *that* much faster or if you're confident with the focus in most of your photos, stick with the mark IV. For me, even a mark III would be enough, since I'm doing landscape photography mostly. But it would be only a backup camera for me, if I can't or don't want to bring my main camera for whatever reason.

Hey, the 24-70 lens was 1.8 - 2.8, and RX100m6 would have rocked the world if they could have made it fixed 2.8, don't you think? They did that early on in the RX10 cameras, but of course had all the room in the world to do that. One can hope that they are saving up for a next version that would have 24-200/2.8, and THAT would be a total game changer. As it is, this is pause for thought for anyone not using this indoors with motion all the way out at 200.

they should have made the model 6 18mm to 70mm and added a mike jack..Extending the focal range to 200mm at f.4,5 was a crazy move and in my opinion destroyed the model .which is why i didnt upgrade after m5 version .

Just like the RX10 III was not an upgrade to the RX10 II (no ND filter, slower lens), the RX100 VI is not an upgrade to the RX100 V. What I find frustrating about the RX100 VI is the removal of the ND filter, the same 5 minute 4K recording limitation (and I assume overheating as well) as well as the same small battery. Sony has disappointed us this time.

Hi Jason: I had almost decided to buy a Sony RX100 Mark V. Then came the Mark VI. However, I am pretty disappointed. I am new to photography and this was going to be my first camera. Now I am confused. I want a camera that I can carry in my mobile riding jacket. I am not interested in videos as I have a GoPro 6 on my bike. Should I still go for a Mark V? I like the f1.8 to 2.8 and the ND filters. Would have loved the touchscreen but will that be a a big trade off?
@caorach3354
@caorach3354 6 жыл бұрын
Even worse - Sony have the tech to make an infinitely variable optical ND filter that doesn't use polarization and that's what we were all waiting for as it means you can use shutter speed and aperture creatively and let the ND control the light getting in. Instead we get no ND at all making the camera pretty much useless, especially for video but also even if you just want still images of moving water in bright light, as one example. Once more the Sony engineers are ahead of everyone else, and the management and marketing department are 30 years behind them. A one stop slower lens and still no audio input plus no ND filter has sounded the death knell of the RX100 line. This camera is a mobile phone replacement with the easily marketable "big lens" and as such it should have been a new product line (say RX200 or something) as it doesn't have the stuff people like me need to use it as a pocketable DSLR replacement.

HANG ON........ What is the aperture at 70mm on the MK 6 ? If its close to the 5 at 70 then 1.8 does not matter as much. I think 2.8 in terms of light is fine at 24mm (what is the equivalent.... 50mm?) If they are about the same at 70mm then the 1.8 does not matter. Just interested as I don't own either. I did not know the mark 5 had ND filters... the 6 has not then I would get the 5 for this alone. Having said that ... having a stabilised 200mm lens on a cam that size that shoots s-log... wow.
@Photogearnews
@Photogearnews 6 жыл бұрын
Andrew Moore aperture on the VI at 70mm is f/4 The trouble with slog is that the base sensitivity is ISO 1000, so you need that ND filter. I ended up shooting at 100fps in Full HD so the shutter speed was 1/200th with the minimum f/11 aperture and exposure was still slightly over exposed.

Why does this exist at $1200? You can get something that does most of what the RX100 VI can do for only $549 by getting the Lumix ZS100. The ZS100 is similar sized, supports 4K, also has a 1" sensor, has a 10x optical 25mm-250mm zoom, and has similar aperture of f2.8-5.9. Camera-wise, I also have a Lumix LX10 (competitor to the RX100 mark3 at fraction of price ) and am blown-away at the image quality. I'm not a Sony-hater - I have an A6300, RX10, and all my home theatre equipment is Sony.

I would keep the Mark V for the F1.8 lens because of better low light pictures and bokeh. I use a point and shoot mostly in the evening in low light so the F1.8 is kind of important to me. Who cares about all that zoom. Just get closer to the subject/object.

These are my exact feelings! I'm happy for the new processor, touch to focus, and they made the view finder quick to use! Not happy about the new lens because I rarely ever get to 70mm! Usually 24-50 is my ideal range and the beyond is used about 1% of the time. However, I do feel more comfortable cranking up the ISO with my A7r III so if this is anything like that then maybe, MAYBE, it might be ok. I'm hoping for it. Ordered one this morning as soon as it went on pre-order to compare it with a RX100 V. I'll be happy is noise level is better when having to crank up the ISO otherwise I'll keep my version 5. Or maybe my RED phone will come before this gets shipped and I will cancer this order! LOL

I just see a good amount of the people in vlogging community uses this camera so I'd figure they would cater more to them in the next iteration. Especially since they are marketing this as a vlog camera along with the grip
@violian5
@violian5 6 жыл бұрын
The thing you'd be missing with the A6500 is finding a lens that can do 10x zoom range. The only one that comes close is the Sony SEL18-105G lens (a 6x zoom); and once you throw that lens on, the camera set-up becomes large and heavy; and your arms would get sore from doing vlogging. But then again, if you're making money doing Vlogging, then I'm certain the person would also invest money into getting multiple lens for their A6500. For vlogging, you could get a a tiny and lightweight 19mm F2.8 prime lens from Sigma (very favorable reviews) for only $169. When you're not vlogging, just swap out the lens to the SEL18-105G.

Udo der Unförmige granted it does seem strange who they didn’t include a mic input, wouldn’t be cost as it would only cost them a couple of dollars to implement but if you’re gonna wanna use mics and be more professional then why not get a more capable camera
@udoderunformige1250
@udoderunformige1250 6 жыл бұрын
One reason for not getting a more capable camera could be the size. Many of them are larger than this tiny thing. That's imporant if you have to travel with as light gear as possible. The other... well, I consider that as a "reason" is marketing: Many people out there want to have the *newest* , the *best* , the *ULTIMATE* , so... At least they could have included some kind of 3.5 mm to USB adapter for a mic at this price point. But I'm with you that the Mark VI, at least for most people, is quite nonsense. They removed not only the built-in ND filter, but those PlayMemory Camera Apps as well. Most of them are... well, they exist, but one or two of them could come in quite useful sometimes. I guess most vloggers would still be fine with a Mark V or IV of the RX100, since they can do 4k as well. People who do more photography than video would be fine with even a Mark III, which you can buy used for quite good prices nowadays.

As an owner of both the IV and V models I was disappointed when I read about the changes planned for the VI. For me the phase detect focusing system in the V is probably THE reason to upgrade. The Eye AF is soooo cool. Works great for capturing my 3 year old granddaughter since she is always on the move! you might try renting one for a couple of days from lensrentals.com or one of the other rental shops. I rented an RX10M4 before I bought one. For such a big purchase its worth the money I think. I just checked you can rent an rx100V for $69 for 7 days from lensrentals.com. they'll probably rent it for as few as 3 days I think. Oh. and no I'm not affiliated with them. just a happy customer.

Good video dude, over £1000 for a compact is silly and I think the rx100 mk6 will flop. I think the price of the g7x mk2 is right for compact cameras. I think £700-800 for 4K and 120fps makes sense as not everyone needs that, but I would buy an a6500 if I spent over a grand. These companies have no brains. Less is more, now they are getting greedy. Guess what? They just renewed the V - the new Va. It has the same innards as the VI (improved LSI). So there is a choice between long reach and the fast lens cameras with the same performance otherwise (you do lose that ND filter though with the VI, and the Va drops the in-camera apps).
