The wife and I have had xiaomi electric scooters for a couple of years, also in Wellington. Definitely notice that the expectations of pedestrians make a big difference to the riding experience. I don't think we would have kept them if people weren't already used to the rental scooters. You notice it when you take it to a city where there aren't rental scooters, a lot more comments, semi-aggressive interactions and fist waving in those places.

Oh man haha, great point. I only rode it through the city that one time, on the way back from Brooklyn. Bike laned the whole way, illegally lol. I'm sold though! The scooter life is amazing. How do you like your Xiaomi? What kinda top speed / range do you get?

I hate that when there's no bike lanes and your scooter is not fast enough for traffic. So your forced to ride on the sidewalks and road. People will be like how dare you ride on my sidewalk. Or they will have noise canceling headphones so they can't hear when you ding your bell.

I live in Vancouver BC Canada and we got a shit ton of bike lanes everywhere including bus lanes that are bike friendly. When there is no bus we have the whole friggin road lol. Im using a smaller Ninebot D38U 350W, goes 30km/h but ive gotten it up to 44km/h down hill. The motor wont allow me to go any faster. Im seriously looking into getting this model. I like the idea of 2WD for better traction. nice vid Cheers.

This is actually a great video! It’s both entertaining and informative,but it’s weird hearing an American accent in a video from NZ?? Once I got over that I dug the various aspects of your testing and if I was with the NZ distributor or with Apollo I would be super happy with what you did. What freaked me out though was 50km on a scooter. WTF? I have an eBike that hits 28mph (45km) and I have only done that a couple of times and both times I was muttering a prayer that I wouldn’t hit a stone in the tarmac…things happen really fast above 30km/h much less 50. Either you must be an adrenaline junky or you have a suppressed survival instinct 😂! Bummer that NZ is so restrictive about where and how fast you can ride a scooter, but either way this was a really clever and enjoyable video and thanks for doing it.

Motorcycle twist throttles are sometimes dangerous for scooters when there's lots of bumps. It can make you twist on accident. So the thumb in my opinion is the safest for bumps. You just put your thumb to the side of the thumb throttle. So bumps won't make you push down on accident.

I grew up in Christchurch, the perfect city for bicycles because its streets are wide and flat. When I moved to Wellington I gave up cycling because of its narrow hilly roads. Despite the city council’s efforts to encourage cycling, they can’t argue with geography; Wellington can never be good for bicycles. Enter the e-scooter; Wellington is perfect for e-scooting, although, as you point out, the road rules for e-scooters are not sensible. I would love to see the Wellington City Council’s obsession with bicycles broaden to encompass e-scooters with similar passion, requiring helmets for safety and allowing e-scooters in cycle lanes, also for safety and to minimise disruption to traffic and risk to pedestrians. On the road, e-scooters should be permitted to travel at 30km per hour to avoid holding up traffic and because they are safe at that speed. Aftr all, bicycles are permitted to travel at that speed and can sdo so easily, so it seems inconsistent and unfair to limit e-scooters. 1000w scooters like the Apollo City Pro and Emove Cruiser should also be permitted in order to be able to get up hills and because these better scooters tend to have better brakes than the low powered ones, which improves safety. Some even have ABS. Finally, for those of you who still believe we are in a climate crisis, encouraging use of e-scooters will reduce CO2 emissions. Please join me in encouraging better use of e-scooters by changing the rules.

"OK, back to being a criminal!" 😂 Yes, in the UK, electric scooters just aren't allowed on public roads at all, outside some exceptions for hired scooters in particular localised schemes. That doesn't stop people ignoring that law, of course. I think legislation needs to catch up with tech and accept that electric scooters can make a valuable contribution to localised travel and commutes. You're taking up less space than pretty much anything apart from pedestrians (oh, and unicyclists, perhaps). But we're not there yet.

Here in Singapore, as one would expect, the whole e-scooter thing is heavily regulated : you need to have an e-scoter licence; the e-scooter must be type-approved; it must be registered; it must display plates; it must be inspected every two years - and it can only be used on a cycling path, maximum speed 25kph. And yes, the cops here will enforce. Unregistered? $2k fine, three months imprisonment. Non-compliant? $5k fine, three months imprisonment... I can't really imagine NZ Police enforcing e-scooter law, given how lax they are on regular road traffic enforcement, so enjoy the thug life in Wellington!

I want to see you use an electric unicycle(euc), quite a few escooter riders here in Queensland Australia have transitioned to euc's. I use a begode T4, full suspention crazy amount of torque, and car bootable. Legality is a issue here also 25km/h max and 12km/h on footpaths, even though almost all escooters and euc's can do double that safely. The T4 has great specs, ~30kg, 60km/h about the size of a small hardshell luggage case and 70km of range. Great fun at a skatepark going up and down verts, going down stairsets, you can sit down on it and even ride it backwards.

Great video Sam, but it must be said that a common-or-garden, 100% legal pushbike is the obvious mode of transport for a journey of just over a mile! (I cycle 5-10 miles every day for both exercise and pleasure, and I'm a knackered old git!). Interesting about the legal situation in NZ. In the UK only hire scooters are legal to use anywhere but private land; some are limited to 12.5mph, others to 15mph, but hundreds of thousands have been sold and are used illegally all the time. And there have been deaths, of course. Personally, I think e-scooters should have the same status as pedelecs, that is, electric bicycles limited to 15 or 20mph, but not legal to use on sidewalks/pavements unless they include a designated cycle lane.
@NewZeroland
@NewZeroland Жыл бұрын
Thanks man! Yeah the UK's scooter laws are way more strict than NZ! If they can go the same speed as bicycles, I feel like they should be allowed in bike lanes. A really interesting, creative and fun video as always; proves that you can cover more diverse content and still captivate, educate and grow your audience - good work! Oooooh, such a polarising subject, so many grey areas and pockets of heated debate. To my knowledge no-one (council, state, country...) has established clear cut laws on what you can and can't do; that's because old farts writing policy can't keep up with change and don't live in the real/tech/green world - let's have teenage opinion boards giving their opinion on law that affects people on the street! Anyway, I think the only law I heard of was that Paris completely banned them because too many locals were getting squashed to death by them. What many viewers may not realise is that, though your work cave is only down the road, you live on the top of a beast of a hill, and so cycling a vinyl (not an ebike) bike home would defo involve sweat, derobing and showering. Based on 5 years experience commuting on bikes (road, pavement, bike lanes, shared lanes), walking, and running, eScooters around Welly - and other busy cities I'm sure, are way too dangerous on pavements and bike lanes if they are going faster than your average cyclist - I'm guessing 15km/h max. Personally, I think all bikes, scooters, etc should be limited to 15km/h on urban pavements and shared cycle lanes, and 30km/h on the road, but with at least a cycling helmet. Outside of urban, in dedicated cycle lanes you can slap an extra 10km/h onto these. Personally, I stopped riding to work because the average Kiwi driver is dangerously illiterate of road craft and I knew it was only a matter of time before I was maimed or killed - how can the loveliest people in the world change so much when they get behind the wheel?! :-( I've really studied hard the way Welly commuters in all vehicles flow around the city, and what goes wrong and right on a minute-by-minute basis for the years I commuted in Welly, and these regs would hold up really well. Education is another big thing as eBikes and eScooters scream around constantly, narrowly missing walkers, cyclists, dogs, babies, potholes, cones etc., and it's a nightmare and properly dangerous, but there's plenty of space for everyone if we set the right rules, educate the masses (especially drunk students), and just be nice to one another :-D
@NewZeroland

Dude, so well said! I know commuting on a bicycle seems like the easiest solution, but like you said, that hill is intense. Also I would hate to share the road with cars without the ability to go as fast as them, for all the reasons you mentioned! It's way too dangerous out there. The 15km/h limit on footpaths is a great idea, and I'm totally cool with that. They just shouldn't sell us scooters that can do 60km/h, or even 100km/h! (yes there is a scooter you can buy in NZ that goes that fast haha)

Oof, I am super late to this video! Slow down there, Speed Racer! Scooters seem to always get mixed opinions where they feel like the ultimate mini electric convenience people mover, but they're also a menace that no one wants to deal with. Small and compact enough to sit in a corner of the office when you get to work, but small wheels can make for wobbly rides. Some people call them dangerous because a few people won't follow the rules of the road but the ones that don't follow safe practices and get into accidents are all that anyone notices. About 20kph seems to be about the general rule most places, even in the US they want them and ebikes limited to about 15mph, any faster and they want you wearing a helmet and riding only in the street (actually, they don't even want the 15mph scooters on sidewalks here either.) not that it really stops people from risking it. This one does look decent though compared to a lot I've seen on other channels, but personally I'd rather ride an ebike if I have to ride in the street, better for visibility. Meanwhile... some Electric Unicycles are hitting 50 Mph on the regular. You want to see crazy scooter footage check out Weped brand scooters and people riding them on highways (in Taiwan, I think?) They probably aren't even the fastest (though they might claim differently.)

Dude electric unicycles freak me out but I NEED to try one. I've only seen one person in NZ riding one and it looked so cool. Surely that's my next EV hahaha. You're right about these regulations.. 20km/h is crazy on the sidewalk, but too slow for the street. I'm not sure why this scooter has turn signals now. It definitely opened my eyes though! I had no idea how fun it would be, and now I want one.

"didn't know at that time"-disclaimer aside, barreling along pedestrian footpaths should intuitively a big nono. Any person quickly exiting a shop wouldn't have had a chance, there's nothing cute about that. As much as I like your promotion of electric motorcycles, not taking "lesser" modes of transport seriously - have you seriously never thought about riding a bicycle to work? - even if done so ironicically comes across as a bit...American : /

No way man. Bicycles are too dangerous. Unless I can go the same speed as cars, I don't feel safe sharing the road with them.

Think they should ban the rental scooters. People don't understand (aren't aware) the laws regarding escooter. They are suppose to be ridden on foot path but go at crazy speeds, don't give way to people, have mulitple people sharing one scooter, dont wear PPE. I do support personal escooters though.

had a sidewalk slam at 40+km on my ebike passing a cyclist that did a pass without checking - my fault going too fast - lesson learned. get a track addict type software that gives you gps speed for video edits. i wear a full face mtb helmet cracked it in crash got another one straight away. i now ride more sensibly lol. its wild out there in nz we dont have any dangerous wildlife other than loose dog's. ute drivers & fuktards on escooters & ebikes.
