Try keeping one big Bonito. Smoke the fillets and freeze the meat. Thaw and serve as an appetizer. Most people find them too strong and oily to eat as a main course but they're great that way.

Our surf fishing is much closer to the beach than it is on the Atlantic Coast. Bonita are typically our past the second sandbar, but they will chase bait in closer.

When it's on, it's on! I've had a few days where I was set-rig fishing for whiting and had bonito, small yellow fin or mackerel start blowing up on mullet 30 feet in front of me and the heaviest gear I had was 12 pound! lol. Go back the next day with heavy spinning gear and there's nothing! That's fishing though. Earlier this year there was a young fella who got 3 yellow fin around 50-60 pounds in a week while chasing mulloway (like a redfish). I often see guys drive their boats right through a working school of bonito/mackerel/tuna right off the beach. Sometimes I catch up with them later and they say they ignore them because they're going offshore for the day to the nearby shallow reefs for some "serious" fishing. Blows my mind. Unless you're catching marlin in 50-80 feet of water I don't know how small reefies are more "serious" than 50 pound tuna. You looked like you were having a blast mate! Good on you getting into them.
