The reason the "zombies" look weird is cause they're not zombies, theyre vampires. We did see the attributes of them being smart throughout the movie like the way they set up the wire trap used on Will the same way he used one to capture the female vampire. "I am Legend" was a book adaptation. The original concept of the book was, that we follow a survivor of a Zombie Apocalypse. He is skilled at surviving and killed many of the "Zombies". Throughout the story we learn more and more, that these "Zombies" have built themselves a society and they are capable of emotions and thought and the guy we were following the whole time is their version of the Boogeyman, since he was always hunting them down and really good at killing them. Turning the trope on the head. We (the Protagonist) are their monster in the cupboard / under the bed. The movie failed to bring that point across. The movie would have been better, if they successfully portrayed that concept.

The "Zombies" are not supposed to be zombies, they're basically just a new species of people, and in the book, it's very different, the whole book is about how the main character realizes at the end, that these creatures are actually just the new humans, and that him killing them actually makes him the monster, and him basically realizing that he is now a Legend, and will be seen as sort of the Boogeyman.

A part that I haven't many people touch on, is that the scene where Fred gets shot and Will is freaking out is because Fred isn't where he's supposed to be. He was outside a store earlier in the movie and now he's in a different part of town by the Darkseeker's nest. The Alpha put Fred there to lure Will in so he could trap him with the same trap Will used to catch his mate. This shows that they are able to have higher levels of thought processes and are learning from him. They are also not afraid of light, they are hurt by sunlight which is why when he's in the nest and shines the flashlight on them it doesn't effect them.

When something is so cute you want to strangle it actually has a term. I looked this up recently adopting an abandoned kitten. It's called cute aggression. And the theory is that they activate a primordial part of your lizard brain because you love them on site and it causes an aggressive response to want to protect them, then more advanced parts of your brain struggle to process the emotion. It's perfectly natural, although it's one hell of a juxtaposition.

The "zombies" showed their intelligence and emotion a lot in the movie, like when the main one partially exposed himself to the light screaming a very distorted "NO!" when the female was taken. Or when they set the trap just like the one he had used knowing enough to use his mannequin as bait. The whole ending is really a coordinated attack to get the kidnapped victim back from the terrible monster that only comes out in the day and takes their people way never to be seen again. The idea behind the original ending and the name of the story is that humanity itself has passed into legend as the unknowable deadly creatures of a bygone era inspiring fear and campfire stories long after the last of us has actually gone. Personally I think there's no comparison it's the superior ending.

@mx922610 ай бұрын
The reason a majority prefers the alternate ending is because 1) it’s much closer to the original source and 2) it is a much more thought provoking ending. Basically our hero learns that these creatures are thinking, feeling individuals. Like humans, they are able to love, grieve, hate, and let go. He realizes that in their eyes, he is the monster, the creature to fear, the boogeyman that steals their loved ones. His intentions to find a cure were good for humans, but to these creatures are essentially the new humanity and he is part of an old “legend” they will tell tales of.

They arent zombies so to say, they are mutanter, that's why he called them "humans" "infected", "k-45's", they are human where the cancer cube boosted muscularure, endurance, breath and pulse rate (that's why they where "bobbing" so much, increase circulation), but their mind digressed into more primitive predators. That's why the main infected poked his head into the sun when Bob used the trap on his mate, they arent zombies, they are capable of feeling and thoughts similar to smart animals such as dogs or wolf's.

I'm guessing you've seen all the comments about Will being the bad guy to a new species, but I wanna make sure you understood the close-up of the guy's face when the woman is kidnapped. The infected guy is the "alpha" of the group, and she is his mate. When she was kidnapped, he exposed himself to dangerous sunlight to see her kidnapper's face and track him down. The trap with the dogs and them charging at his desk/home was all because he kidnapped one of their people and they wanted revenge. (Spoilers so please watch the cannon first ending) The first ending they made was closer to the book, but everyone who watched it didn't like it ending on such a happy note. Instead of blowing them up, he realizes that the dude is smashing the glass to get to his mate. He pulls the table out and wakes her up from her induced coma (she is still infected). The alpha picks her up and they all leave, and the Dr is left alive feeling even more guilt for not only infecting them but killing them afterward.

Gotta disagree on your thoughts on the alternate ending. It's better to me because it adds to this story the meaning of the original story. Robert is the legend that the title refers to, he's the boogeyman killing them and taking them in their sleep. I will agree that it could have been executed much better and hinted at better at times but there were scenes that showed glimpses of their emotions and intelligence throughout. (Like setting a trap for him with the mannequin or showing visible anger and the leader staying in the light when one is trapped by Robert) I think the big change most people see with the tone given to the infected with this ending is how Robert realizes that he's been killing so many and causing that kind of pain to them that he felt losing Sam and his family.

29:08 To be fair it did show that they have rational thoughts throughout the movie. Thats how they trapped him. They trapped him the same exact way he trapped one of them which takes intelligence. They planted one of the same dummies he always talks to in position to trick Robert, which suggests they actually knew all about him and certain areas he frequently visits (and if you pay attention closely in that scene, the head actually does move which is the first time I actually noticed that. Apparently the Director did stuff like that to really make it feel like we were going crazy). The head infected was clearly pissed about getting his lady taken, so it shows they have some level of emotional range too. Robert just believed that they didn't have any intelligence or emotional awareness. The alternate ending shows not only when Robert realizes this, but why the head infected chose to go after him. So instead of sacrificing himself, he chooses to give the lady infected back, which saves him and the family. As cool as the original ending was, I always preferred the alternate ending. There was so much Robert had to go through alone and so many negative things to happen to him, that it felt like overkill to give an ending where he just dies. And when you think about it, it kinda makes more sense than the original ending. When he recognizes the butterfly, he's supposed to come to some kind of profound revelation, but instead he just blows himself up which he was gonna most likely do anyways if he couldn't escape. 18:04 I can't think of anything but for some reason I did think about a scene in Independence Day with Will Smith in it. There was a cool scene where a dog gets a quick lil close call moment, but thats about it. If you've never seen that movie then I highly recommend. And while you're at it, you should check out I' Robot and Enemy of the State with Will Smith too. He's got a lot of good ones and those are a MUST WATCH!

The alternate ending shows the more human side of the “zombies”, but they realized it wouldn’t play well with audiences and went with the mindless action ending instead.

The original ending and the ending of the book is so much better. Basicaly, at the end Robert understands that the Alpha is attacking him because he captured his partner. He understands that the infected are living in some form of society. He understands that this world is no longer his. He understands that he is the monster that comes in the day (which if to the infected what the night is for us), the booguyman, the monster under the bed, the thing that lurks when you're most vulnerable to snatch infecteds never to be seen again, he has become legend. @@xviper2k They definitely should've gotten their ducks in a row if there was even potential for a sequel... Shouldn't have been indecisive as they were but... We are in the age of franchise/sequels/reboots/etc. I'll watch the sequel and praise it if it's good or trash it if it's bad.

So the alternate ending is actually way closer to the book ending. The "Zombies" are considered beasts by him, but at the end of the movie he finds out that they were only attacking him because he was killing so many of them with his tests. They basically considered him a serial killer. His realization at the end is that they were not people anymore, but they were also not monsters. They were just protecting themselves from him. I actually very much prefer this alternate ending but I can understand why people would like the theatrical ending better.

They were shown to be smart throughout the movie, who do you think set up the trap that got Sam killed? It was the Darkseeker leader. He wanted revenge for Bob kidnapping one of the Darkseekers, and got it with the same type of trap.

She's a 2 year old German shepherd/black lab mix, looks very similar to the one in this film! … Hey Alex … ...She's got two puppies left in her litter looking to be re-homed, if you're serious about wanting that dog 🤔😉😂

So, the alternate ending, is actually the original ending to the story that existed before this movie was made. What’s supposed to be happening, is Robert realises that the” mindless animals” he has been hunting, are actually in a sense still people. That’s when he realises, HE is the boogie man. He is the monster that comes during their sleeping hours, kidnaps, their loved ones, who are then never seen again. Those ones that attacked his house were basically trying to rescue their leader’s girlfriend

It was the main Darkseeker partner he took captive and he saw how he did it. So the Darkseeker set his own trap by moving one of the mannequins to try get her back. I actually prefer the “alternate” ending, as it explains the trap.

In the DVD extras for the movie, there's also a cartoon, and it's explained that the infected don't know that they're infected, and their vision sees the unaffected as monsters that are so scary, they have to fight them with their bare hands if necessary.

I think the best adaptation of the novella is 1964's "The Last Man on Earth" with Vincent Price. Matheson wrote the screenplay for it, which is why it is such a close adaptation.

This was made as a book first, and in THAT the end talks about Will Smith’s character is in fact the ‘nightmare’ the killer, the hunter of those ppl. They are terrified of him, he’d steal, do pole prod and give shots that killed the infected ppl. The infected ppl got desperate to kill him, then he stole their … leaders’ woman, and they came for her. He came to see that THEY saw HIM as the monster. Why they tried to trap him. It was a matter of perspective.

If I recall the alternate ending was actually the original ending. But test audiences didn't like it so they added the ending where he dies. But then they also said that alternate (original) ending is the canon one. So it's really confusing. But at least it explains how there is a second one if that ending where he lives is canon. This means the zombies (granted not really zombies) have some sort of emotion. The head male zombie just wanted his woman back. It does add some interesting twist if they have some emotions, but still, its weird.
@emptymaggaming386310 ай бұрын
They did show the vampires had feelings and thoughts the whole movie. The male vampire that led the final assault was the one who ran into the sun when he kidnapped the female and the one who set up the trap with the mannequin and dogs. He was trying to get his mate back the whole time.

Alternate ending was a little nod to the book with how they are capable of rational thought & consider him the monster
@Uhlbelk10 ай бұрын
You should read the synopsis about the book. The original story is about everyone being turned into vampires, the last "man" goes out hunting them down, he is the "legend" because in the new world he is the equivalent of the monster in a story.

"Where was the rational thought in the zombies during the whole movie?" Meanwhile, in the movie: the creatures set a trap, are smart enough to hunt in packs and stay away from the sunlight that hurts them lol

when they film movies like this (at least when this was made) they'd shut down multiple blocks for the parts. during filming you can walk through the sets while they're not working. it's pretty cool. we walked around downtown brantford while they were filming silent hill probably 20 years ago.
@saylosrelyks864510 ай бұрын
The creatures aren't as dumb as you think, you weren't paying attention at all because the alternate ending actually makes more sense than you think (and it's canon so there's that), the "vampires," more so the leader clearly demonstrated a form of intelligence and thought as he was able to set up the trap with the mannequin and he showed they have emotional connections considering the leader was willing to suffer 3rd degree burns in order to show his anger and frustration at losing his wife so no the alternate ending doesn't suck, the theatrical ending is what sucks.
@whatwhatinthewhat440010 ай бұрын
Throughout the movie they show they are smart and care for each other, so the alternate ending makes sense (sort of) like they gather in groups and run around together so they have some sort of pack or society mentality. When Will Smith traps the woman vampire the head vampire stands in the sun screaming even though it hurts. So the vampire are just trying to get back their own, defend themselves, hunt for food, which seems pretty human to me. So the alternate ending is him getting his "wife" back and leaving

We were 13 when he passed and it ripped my heart out I say he’ll forever be missed and thought about often he was the best boy!
