Sadly, the next two movies are so bad they’ll make you question if the first one was good. We all wish they just stopped after the first one and we could imagine the rest being cool. The Animatrix was pretty cool though, it’s a bunch of short animated stories that fills in the back story.

While we are confessing things that we didn’t notice in the theater or in the 200+ times I’ve probably watched it: the oracle wasn’t wrong. 39:30 There's actually a pretty solid logic to this. Once you fire a bullet, it's on a defined ballistic trajectory that can be instantly parsed if you can read data straight from the Matrix, and the bullet is just another element of the Matrix itself. It's why Agents can dodge bullets, and why Neo can now control them. But when you fight hand-to-hand, every action is guided by a will and can't be read as just another data point or directly controlled by Neo. It's why the Agents don't go all bullet-time to just dodge punches, etc. like when Morpheus tried to fight them.

A fun fact, John Wick is a big giant love letter to The Matrix in a few ways. The director, Chad Stahleski, was Keanu's stunt double for The Matrix. The actor for the continental doctor played a very important character in the second Matrix movie, and of course, Laurence Fishburne being the homie in all 3 movies is a given. The Matrix is also quite literally the movie that pioneered slow motion in fight scenes. Every 2000s action movie after this was trying to do what they did with bullet time.
@speider

Yellow, Green and Blue, did you notice the deliberate use of colours in The Matrix, it is incredibly clever. To get the whole story you will need to also watch 'The Animatrix', a collection of 9 different animated short films based in The Matrix Universe by 9 different directors and play the game 'Enter the Matrix'. Bit of Trivia for you, Will Smith was offered the role of Neo, he knocked it back to do Wild, Wild, West.

I saw this movie way before its world premiere in 1999, as a part of tech demo by DELL, who provided the systems used for Matrix's CGI. It was a wonderful experience back then, and it still aged well because it mixed practical and CGI effects together in a unique innovative blend. For example the 180-degree camera during Trinity's flying kick or Neo's bullet-dodging moment is 100% practical. There were dozens of cameras mounted on a semicircular beam, all synchronized to fire within milliseconds from the previous one; that's how you get the flyaround in slow-mo. A truly limit breaking movie. Too bad the sequels spoiled what could've been a truly epic story.

This is really one of the most intelligent movies to come out of Hollywood. The Matrix simulation is based on the Cartesian philosophy, specifically the Evil Demon (or Evil Genius) argument that Descartes posed as a challenge to his own Cogito (I think, therefore I am) in which reality is an illusion created by an omnipotent being tricking us into believing what we believe. It also references Descartes' dream argument in that perceived reality is actually a dream. The movie is also VERY heavily influenced by the original animated Ghost in the Shell, which was also very philosophical and explored concepts if identity such as: who are we when our bodies become interchangeable

To clarify, anyone that is still plugged into the matrix when they spot someone, it’s like a camera, recognition software if an agent is chasing them and random person spots them the recognition software goes through a few seconds, and then turns that person into an agent, or just allows the agent to take over that model temporarily; respawning the overtaken individual back afterwards.

This movie is one of the few that I’d say is basically perfect. Not a single piece of dialogue is wasted. It all has a purpose in setting the stage, or in world building, or in driving the story forward. Unfortunately the 2nd and 3rd installments are diminishing returns. The second suffers from overused (and bad) CGI; though it’s a good story still. The 3rd is not a good story at all IMO. However, they’re both worth watching to see how it the trilogy goes. I also think Resurrections has a lot of promise if they make other ones that build on that.

Funny part about watching this is remembering the first time I ever saw it. As soon as this came out on DVD, I was in high school. My best friend invited me over to watch it on his parent's massive surround sound system home theater. The scene popped up with Morpheus presenting the red pill/blue pill and as soon as he says the line about "I'll show you how deep the rabbit hole goes", the power goes out. There was a massive storm at the time that was being blended into the ambience of the movie, so we didn't know how bad the thunder and lightning was at that time.

Great reaction buddy, this is one of those movies everyone needs to see at least once. Especially with how far we've come w/ social media and the internet and AI and VR, etc., the underlying theme and premise is even more relatable now than it was when it came out which is a feat that few movies accomplish. The technical parts of this are also amazing and there are some cool behind-the-scenes videos on KZbin that shows how they did those bullet dodge scenes and stuff - they had to invent all new types of cameras and software just for this movie to pull off some of those scenes, so the impact this movie had to the filmmaking industry was almost as big as the cultural impact it had. The other Matrix movies are pretty good, but this first one is still the best by far (imo), although your mileage may vary. Cheers

The Oracle told her to wait until the train passed before answering the phone. That's why she says "Everything the Oracle told me has come true. Everything but this." This was the last thing the Oracle told her that hadn't fully played out yet. She didn't know why she was supposed to wait, so she didn't know what was about to happen; she was choosing to trust the Oracle, but she was still scared: "I want to tell you something, but I'm afraid of what it'll mean if I do."
