Sucks it takes experiencing something to believe it. This is why empathy needs to be taught as a positive trait, not a weakness.

That part. I’m glad he had a learning experience but sympathizing at the very least with people differently experiencing life than you is a very important part of the human condition. Hell, you don’t even have to fully understand what they are going through. Understanding they are going through it should be enough.

My mother had severe depression when I was growing up. It was horrible to witness. She's been so depressed a couple times she wouldn't even leave bed for water. She had to be taken to the ER for fluids more than once or she would've died, she didn't even have the will to keep herself sustained. If you are not of our community, then yes, in this instance, our male African-American culture shys away from therapy. Practice gratitude. You are enough as you are, no matter the circumstance. I had depression since I was 12 and I never saw a light at the end of the tunnel. I attempted several times. Then my grandmas words finally started to ring constantly in my head during one of my darkest times. “You can change anything in this life except death.” Really made me analyze my life and why I was suffering so much. I cut off bad company. I stopped doing things to please others and made more time to take care of myself. Ate healthy. Enjoyed the little things. One night I was able to jog to the park from my house, something I was never able to do cause I was overweight. I remember sitting down on the bench and crying. I never felt so alive. I felt like I was one with the world finally. The feeling was so foreign for weeks I thought at any moment it would fade. When it didn’t after a few months, I realized I made it out. I beat my depression. Don’t lose hope. No matter what, you deserve to be here. To enjoy this life. Fuck anyone or anything that’s keeping you from finding yourself again. Do anything but death. Even if you hit a wall, do something else. Rest without feeling guilty. And try again. And again. Until you make it out. Hope everyone who’s dealing with depression gets to see that day when they do ❤

Everyone is these comments is talking about how depression exist yet everyone fails to realize he only became depressed when he wasn’t doing what he wanted in life and couldn’t. Many people that have depression have it because of that exact reason and I’m a prime example of that. Depression is real however it can be suppressed when instilling a good work ethic and when making progress in your life. Truth be told it is just another excuse for failure and if that’s fine by you by all means stay depressed but if your looking for something more you truly don’t have time for it.
@piffyi1

@@boysfromtheshack4458for some people yes but for people like myself and countless others its not as clear cut as you try to make it. For some it has nothing to do with success, failure or work ethic for some its hereditary, others its chemical imbalance. There have been many successful people with amazing work ethics who are doing what they want/love who are severely depressed (clinically) & leave this earth because its not something you can shake by just work ethic and doing what you want/love. Don’t downplay it and say its an excuse when not all cases of depression are similar or the same as yours was.

@@boysfromtheshack4458 Depression extends far past work ethic and life purpose. Thats your experience and his but not everyone else's. Reminds me of my favorite local artist, made an album about both of his parents passing. He tried to suppress those feelings with work, and his depression only continued to spiral. Even with all the money and fame he's constantly achieving he couldn't out work those problems. It will come for you. Purpose can be one part of depression its certainly not the end all. Thats an over statement, I had it for the exact reason dealing with deaths and family health. It can be a cause of failure at some point, but its far from the main excuse for why people can fail! There's far more nuance to what you're saying. Depression is not linear, its certainly a spectrum of things.

The sleep is so bittersweet. You’re always feeling fatigued but you use sleep as an escape mechanism at the same time. Then you wake up feeling guilty because you slept your day away and did nothing, ushering in a little more depression, then you just repeat the cycle. It takes a lot of time and will power to turn it around.

The simple fact that men are talking about mental wellness is so uplifting. Having worked in the mental health field, so many cultures view mental health issues as "fake", "excuses", etc. Or a lack of having faith. You can be depressed, ha e anxiety and be in prayer everyday. The ability to recognize there's an issue and get the help is everything. Yet, not beat yourself up for going through it.

They tell you to get over it, snap out of it, ask you why you’re depressed all of the time. They don’t realize it just doesn’t work that way. It’s always the worst when you have moments where you feel fine, then out of nowhere it just takes over you again, and you just can’t shake it as it lasts for days. I’ve been pushed to a lot of breaking points. Especially, this year as I suffered a heart attack months ago. Never felt more helpless in my life upon initial recovery. Now, my life isn’t going to be the same because of it as I now have to survive off of pills for the rest of this life I got left. Talk about pain. Depression can eat you alive. Buuuut like guy above most people don’t believe me when I tell them. I accidentally found out when I was depressed as a pre teen. Now I see all over social media what I inadvertently found out as a child . Please , please, please , please , please start with your mind!! It lies to you to protect you. Fu$k that sh&t and try some other things you think aren’t real! It’s one hell of a ride - I PROMISE you. You’re gonna feel sad again, you’re gonna be depressed again… you just have to KNOW you can get out of it and it’s not forever. Feel it and research , divulge in whatever is the core problem and then kick its mf’n ass every chance you get ! You just gotta know that it’s okay to not be okay and it’s okay to fail everyday . I physically moved very slowly and basic tasks of taking care of myself like eating or showering felt extremely difficult and took too much energy for my body to execute. When I realize I’m in a state of depression, I immediately take the focus off of myself and start praying, praising God and thanking him for the many ways he has blessed me and I do this continuously and without even realizing it, the depression just fades away. Im really sorry man. I had back problems really early on in my working out phase and for a few years I was depressed. I know how much it sucks. Physiotherapy is your best option to get to the road of recovery.

I so feel this. So exhausted, but you wake up at 3 am thinking about everything you ever did wrong/was done wrong to you, and you cant shut your brain down. Then rinse and repeat for months or years, until you can barely function.

A weird effect when that happens is like he said, walking down the stairs. When it's happened to me and I've been out of action for days or a week or so, I'd finally get up and walk down the stairs and my legs were weak, I'd almost fall, and I'd be out of breathe just going up and down stairs, even if you're still managing to eat, your body wastes away along with your mind.

Depression will have you feeling like there is no reason to live. You have to push yourself to do everything. Getting out of bed, going to the store, normal things become difficult. It’s definitely real. Medicine and therapy can really help.

Same with anxiety… I used to think people who said they had that were just making excuses or seeking attention until I experienced it at a high level . I learned the meaning of anxiety without any context ,explanation, or definition Ill never forget the moment it clicked and I said “ wow, this feeling I’m feeling is what anxiety is, I get it now”

I swear this happened to me! My medical doctor is the one who clued me in! Asked me if I had anxiety? And I was automatically about to say no and she stopped me. She asked me some more questions , I answered them and she was like that's anxiety! I was like 👀.

to anyone still saying its fake I'm glad you haven't hsd to experience it, I've seen grown people with lots of friends and achievements get dragged down into the deep of it and never be the same

True depression is a hormonal imbalance. It's the reason why diet and exercise are true medicine. It keeps us in balance. Working as truly designed.

Depends on the level of depression. To get out of severe depression will take way more than just eating ur salad and hitting the gym

Well monoamines and sociology-type factors are pretty salient aspects too. Albeit some neurochemicals are both hormones and monoamines as well. Also the gut-brain axis.

Only a clinical psychologist can determine if the depression is real or fake. It’s dangerous for an untrained “expert” to tell someone that they aren’t really depressed.

Remember everyone. Depression is felt on a scale. You can be at a one a feel mildly depressed. 10 is when you don’t want to be yourself anymore. When you feel like you have to act everyday and put on a mask just to break down the moment you’re alone. That’s why I pray for all of us bc shit do be rough out here. I guess that the way it was meant to be tho. Maybe we would still suffer from depression if we never had to struggle as a human.

I think so, some people just have their brains built that way. Some people get knocked into it by life but others just have it forever, it's tough.

this is true. There can be this general low key depression that goes on for years, just feeling like every day is the same. Feeling like it’s never sunshine outside, when it really is, typa thing. But you can still live life and work, navigate relationships. Then there’s the heavy depression that makes life unlivable, usually only a few months, but can be more. You have no drive, even for doing basic things like watching Tv. You just spend your days in bed with no will to live. People think it’s like being sad, but it’s really the opposite. It’s being empty. You really have to experience it to know what it’s like.
