Man, you're making me appreciate the Honda Shadow 1100 I once owned. That thing was absolutely bulletproof! With regards to minor leaks and scratches...yeah, you gotta let it all go. I’m so glad I watched this video. Your buddy Tim from Ontario traded his rebel 1100t and I bought it from the dealer. It has low miles 2024 and it’s sitting there with oil drops on the floor under it. I asked Tim and Slight moto who’s worked on it lots, and there was never a leak. Now I’m thinking the Suzuki dealer I got it from did the same thing. Now my fresh oil change is probably half old oil and it’s getting pushed out from being over full. I haven’t picked it up yet, so I can check the oil level before I do.

Finding a good, honest shop is ridiculously tough. I don't use 'em very often because I do a lot myself, but it seems that so many places just don't give a s--t how they treat customer's bikes. If they want repeat customers, you'd think they'd "care" a little more... Glad the problem with the second shop wasn't too big a deal! And, yeah, I always think the bike feels different or is making weird noises after I do something major to it. Just comes with the OCD territory... usually. 😅

That's a very mature self-observation with regards to thrashing on bikes. These things happen, you can't work on bikes and they just stay pristine, the only way to keep them in immaculate condition is to not ride them at all and just store them and who in their right mind wants to do that.

Hey Burch, It was mainly your channel along with a couple others that helped me decide on the Rebel 1100 (manual) & I absolutely love it. Almost impossible to find places that'll handle our stuff like it their own. Over the years I would stress to employees that they better treat customer repairs BETTER than their own. Man, I'm sorry you had to go through all of that! Nothing against maintenance shops, but after turning wrenches on aircraft for 20+ years, and being burned by other people's work on more than one occasion, I've made it a point to do a pretty decent visual inspection of everything in, on, and around what was worked on, along with any fluid levels they invoiced for. Like you said, people make mistakes, but those are expensive mistakes.

Rebel 1100 is still on my Wishlist, only thing is I will probably keep an extra attention for the leaks, it's great to know what has a potential of happening beforehand... This way or another I am planning to get it in... let's say 2 years, so there is a possibility they'll fix it till then. Overall I see the Rebel 1100 as a great bike they made, and honestly the only thing I would probably prefer to have there "on top" would be to have it shaft instead of chain driven. I had messaged you about my cb300 having that oil issue with the weephole....I think I maybe have damaged the oil seal from overfilling on oil (not sure if that was really the reason). After I did the repair, I still had a little oil coming from the weep after. Take some paper towel and roll it up and shove it into the weep. It should soak up all the oil if it is done leaking

I think you are right to be a little peeved about the paint chip, but you are handing it accordingly. Ultimately, these bikes may be expensive, but at the end of the day they are just material goods. Shit happens, life goes on. I think the big takeaway is that these shops/dealerships are only as good as the individuals who work at them, and some mechanic making $23/hr isn't going to care about your bike as much as you do... Anyhow, great video as always and I'm glad the 1100 is going to be a mainstay in the videos once again!

Honda has made so many great bikes over the years. My Kawasaki is old and leaks a few drops every now and again and my 22 year old Sportster never leaks a drop. Honda should have taken that bike and sealed it for free and then apologized to you but my point is that life is short and riding is what matters. You are a smart guy and you know that those leaks are not detrimental so spend your time feeling the wind and only worry about this stuff when it’s raining or cold. Thank you for the videos.

I'd say call the shop and just ask if they can get that fixed. Definitely wasn't there before hand and clearly caused by them because they were working in that exact area. Not a big deal and relatively easy fix. Also, having a shop fix that grommet leak was the best thing anyway because it documents it and hopefully Honda actually recalls it like they should.

From the sounds of it they’re going to send me all the necessary touch up paint so I can fix it myself. I’d rather that then to ride another 4 hour round trip to have a shop (that already damaged my bike in the first place) do the work for me. And agreed- even with all the BS I’m glad that I did everything “properly” so that it’s documented.

Hopefully that oil leak behaves. There are 2 gaskets in there i think. 1 for oil and 1 for coolant. Seems like that will need to be replaced. My crf, did the same thing but with coolant. Had it replaced 3 times cause the shop kept messing up the repair… I also was at a dealership that had 2 crf300ls and one had coolant on the weep hole and the other had oil. I don’t think it will ever go away 100% due to the design. The only jobs I’d take it to a dealer for are a tire replacement and a valve clearance. Also my crf300ls paint was sub par.

That's another thing you pointed out that I think people need to understand. New model, first year. This is "unproven" technology and frankly, more new technology ends up crap than ends up being bulletproof, this is why we still talk about the bulletproof bikes and cars from the 70s, 80s, and 90s, because having a vehicle that meets that standard of excellence is actually a bit of a rare thing. However, a company doesn't get to that point of new tech being bulletproof if they don't first take the risks of making the new tech and putting it out there to be driven by many over long periods of time. Frankly, if "not enough" honda bond is the major issue here and that's it, then that's not much of a big deal and in fact that's a one-time fix as far as I can tell. Not bad at all for first year of a new model.

I dont think the paint is an issue from the shop. It may have shown itself after repair/washing but It is along a weld and they are not using big tools to remove small bolts. I am thinking more likely from flex of the frame. Ever had the front wheel off the ground?

Shops will rip you off and take advantage of. Sounds like the rebel 1100 got some issues too, which sucks. There's gonna get chips on it though from rising driving, gravel flies up and all kinds of stuff when riding, I know the frame thing wasnt.from gravel but the exhaust pipe looks like it could've been, it don't look too bad. I will say I understand the wanting a professional to take care of your most expensive bike. But I decided to look at my new moto guzzi that I should do all my work on it because then I know it will be cared for perfectly. And I also saved like 700 dollars 😂

I decided to go that route with my XR150 in the Philippines. I wanted to do upgrades that potentially voided my warranty along with wanting to use a different oil than the thin Honda oil. It's such a hassle to get to the dealer and with such a simple bike, I just went for it. I swapped the carb and I'm glad I did, wired the lights for DC so now I have LEDs. I can change my own oil and set my own tappets. When I picked up the bike, I was more familiar with the cold hard starting issue than they were. He started draining the carb like there was a problem. I don't want my bike to be shop class for a rookie mechanic. If it was a complex machine like the ADV160 FI, liquid cooled scooter, then sure, I'm at the mercy of the dealer.

Glad it finally got fixed and done and the idiocy of the other, blood-sucking, mad-pay-gouging, first repair shop is outta the picture (forever, hopefully). Glad to see the Rebel back home with the rebel Daddy. My first bike was a Honda 400 and I rode that sucker into the ground; it looked ugly by the time I was done with it: paint scratches, rust, way too many imperfections to list but it rode good for what I needed. After that, the bikes I'd get I'd take better care of and make sure everything was copacetic. So when I bought my current bike brand new, I'd baby that thing like it was going out of style. Then my first scratch became a second one and a third, etc. and you do what you can to maintain, even though life is gonna throw everything at you to make sure your efforts are gonna take some hits. In the end, don't sweat it. Repair the big stuff, forgo the little things unless they have potential to become bigger and ride the wind like an eagle on two wheels for all its worth. And eat tacos. Keep the vids goin, Burch-dude!

As was said. Weld points that the paint pops off from show stress at that weld. Wheelies? Driving of curbs? Potholes? Water pump weep holes on Hondas.🙄 The can leak oil, coolant, or both. I had an ST1300. Got a water pump under warranty, was leaking oil. Later model years they put a "drain" tube on the weep hole and changed the "phraseology" in the service manual from dripping to leaking. With a tube going to the ground how are you going to know it's leaking while riding? I went back in time, my current ride is a 92 750 Nighthawk. No coolant, no valve adjustment, no ride modes, no FI, simple.

So when motors have too much oil it sometimes gets the air filter a little oily and that might make it run less than perfect. So if I were you I would check the air filter to make sure every part of it is still dry and not oily.

Hey Burch doubt you’re gonna probably see this but I am the guy who owns the Honda rebel 500 SE whos commented before I just wanted to say that I am noticing a lot more frame damages in places where I think it wouldn’t be so it could be entirely possible. It was either the shop or it could’ve just been like that, and never have noticed it for example, near the area where the chain guard is where the screws there was a bunch of scratches around there, as well as just in general very tight parts, so that could totally be the case as for your bike leak. How many miles do you have again on the sucker. It leaks worse than my 2010 bmw 😂

That paint issue on the frame looks more like a manufacturing defect with the initial paint than a service issue.

I personally think the service industry is trending down. Hard to find good technicians who care. The service writers have to spend more time with customers because of poor service. Honda bond seems the way to go if you do a cost benefit analysis. Thanks for the video. I have a 2023 Rebel 500.

I was so close to buying 1 of these. I want a auto bike after being on this navi for 9 months. And there is only 2 options. This or the 750N or something like that. Both Hondas and probably got same issues. Oh well saved 12k or 9k depending on which one I would of choose.

That cracked paint area is a factory defect. The paint should adhere to the frame and be thick enough to not crack. That shop should fix the issue. I wouldn't keep that bike if it was overfilled because there are seals that could be damaged by over-filling.

You can mention the shops name. It’s not illegal and they will have a very hard time trying to do anything about it. Unless you signed an NDA, then you can say what you want about your experience. It’s no different than a google review. Don’t let them scare you. Call their bluff.

few reasons why I dont buy brand new bikes are stories like these from a ton of people, manufacturers bike are never perfect, couple that with dealership neglect (or at least the PDI dudes) who hates their job, theres always something. i buy my bikes used, i buy them cheap, i go through everything myself regardless of what previous owner says, I trash it myself, and NEVER bring my bikes to ANY "PRO" SHOP or STEALerships. The prima donna thing was too much my first thought but then again you got it new so its understandable and I'm all for it. You're shelling out money so you better get yours right? But then again I knew this is what's going on that's why I dont bother with brand new ones. End of the day you got a bike, are you gonna baby it or ride it, those are the only choices :D

Once the seal is blown from overfilling it will leak. I do not let dealers work on my stuff (if I can do it) - most of the time they damage something or do something wrong. I think this model is not great. I have 1982 shadow and it does not leak.

A Honda leaking oil? Honda must have contracted with HD for engine parts. I've owned 14 HD spanning 55 years. All leaked at some point. Recently purchased an '03 VTX 1800C with 27,000 miles. Thought about loosening some engine bolts to make me feel normal.

Hey Mike, does that oil look clean and new or a little bit dirty like it's a mixture?
@LifeOfBurch
@LifeOfBurch Жыл бұрын
Definitely a bit of a mixture, but hard to say since it would’ve theoretically been 4qts fresh mixed with 1qt that only had under 5k miles on it. I’ll probably drain it all and replace with fresh oil to be safe though. Already ordered a bunch of oil that should be here Monday or Tuesday 👌🏻

CHECK YOUR COOLANT FOR OIL CONTAMINATION. MY VTR1000 HAD THE SAME ISSUE WITH WATER PUMP SEALS
@LifeOfBurch
@LifeOfBurch Жыл бұрын
How badly contaminated was the coolant, and how obvious was it when looking at it? That was one of my concerns when all of this was first discovered, but I stuck a clean dipstick down into the coolant overflow and when I wiped it off it was only coolant with no signs of oil.

@@LifeOfBurch check your oil also. my bike introduced a bit of coolant to the oil. if your weep hole is showing signs of a milky substance then replace those seals. a drip of oil once in a while isnt bad,but if it comes out in a stream,replace immediately

@@michaeleisenhardt4590 yea I think I’m good for now. No signs of coolant in the oil either and every time there’s been anything on the weep hole it’s been clearly either coolant or oil separately, not a milky blend of the two. Definitely gonna keep an eye on things though!
